EXTRA TIPS:
The best time to divide your plants is early Spring- early Summer.
Use fresh soil for repotting.
Divided and potted plants need to be water more frequently for the first 3 months.
Plants require more water in dry and hot weather.
Do not allow the soil to dry out completely.
Check the soil often to ensure that it stays moist.
Place plants in the brightest light spot.
Rotate every time you water to provide an equal light exposure to all sides.
Mist frequently for refreshment.
Place humidifier nearby to elevate humidity levels.

New plant dad here, learnt a lot today. Thanks!
Hi! Thank you for watching and your comment.
Have fun on your new green journey !
I was thinking exactly the same thing as the poster below. My first video and I was truly amazed at how you explain things so succinctly and so to the point. That is as much of an art as your obvious experience with plants. This will not be my last video and am now a happy subscriber indeed from Australia. I have a 30 foot plus white flowered BOP Nicolai spanning 3 storeys high in my backyard and I need to get that back into shape. This video definitely gave me the confidence to to move forward and cut some of the lower stalks and repot them around my home. Thank you once again. :)
Hi! I appreciate your kind words. Means a lot to know that our videos are helpful and informative!!!
Thank you for sharing your story. Sounds like this Bird of Paradise is magnificent!
Green Luck to you & May your plants grow happy and healthy!
As a first time watcher thank you for the bird of paradise repotting. Doing a large outdoor one soon. I do however like the plants on the walls. Wow, that’s a great system. Here in Arizona, but that’s a great system. Thank you.

Good morning Juliette ... This video was about my biggest anxiety about plants ... Dividing !!!
I have a giant Monstera to divide ... Watching this video put me at ease with the process ...

Juliette, I just followed your tips from this video and divided the Bird of Paradise plant that my wife gifted me last year. I now have three different plants that look like they're going to do great on their own. I'm excited to watch them grow...

Hi Erica,
Thank you for subscribing. Happy you are enjoying our videos. 🌱
I know exactly who you’re talking about 😂😂
@@joeconnordeck4922 who is it now im curious hahah
Thank you alot! I recently recieved 2 birds in a pot. Both over 2 meters, so they are huge! But sadly both stems have grown in an angle over the years. I will need to separate them and repot then so they will stand straight. But I was really afraid of cutting the roots. Thank you for giving me the confidance to do so :)
Hi Chris,
Thank you for watching! 🌱
Sounds like your plant was leaning toward the light, and that is why it is growing on an angle. Rotate your plants every time you water to provide an equal light exposure to all sides.

I love your videos of the bird of paradise!!! 😍😍
I'm so glad! Thank you for watching! 🌱
Lovely video. More stalks will come from cut roots.
So nice of you! Thank you for watching! 🌱
Hi Julia. Thank you for the video on how to split the plants. My question is what type of soil or other additives did you use to repot them? Such as items in the pot to help with draining, etc.
Hi Lee,
Thank you for watching 🌱
I use peat moss based potting mix mycityplants.com/products/indoor-potting-mix
Planters that I use for all plants are Lechuza self-watering planters. These have a smart sub-irrigation system, offer drainage. You can watch our videos about these pots here bit.ly/3FBJIp4
To add more porosity to a potting mix you have, you may add perlite amzn.to/3NmEQrJ

Excellent information, I have several giants in my "jungle" next to my carport, I only remember planting one large container but it probably had multiple stems because now I have maybe half a dozen approaching fifteen feet or so, do I need to "cull the herd" so to speak, or just let them continue growing, they really seem to like watering
Hi Jeff,
Wow! 15 feet! Sounds great, beautiful and massive!😀
If the plant is happy, let it be. If too big, prune it to a desired width/height.
Thank you for watching🌱
Thank you Julia, for the very informative video. I live in San Antonio, TX where we have lots of sun but it is quite dry. I just split three BoP plants into dedicated planters, while trying to preserve root systems as much as possible. I have screens on windows and plants start darkening, leaves damaging and curling very quick. May/should I put the plants outside under the direct sun light while we have temperature below 50-80F?
Thank you,
Hi! Thank you for watching!
Plant go trough some shock after being divided and repotted. So some leaf issues are common.
Yes, you can move plants outside but do not place them under direct sunlight.
May your plants stabilize and thrive!
Hello Juliette, I am French and do not speak English or read it with the translator. I should be able to get out of this. I want to thank you for your sense of humor in this video and for your advice. And we see that you handle the plants and you treat them with love, which is so beautiful. I’m so happy I’ve found your channel! I love BOP and large tropical plants - I have question I know you recommend the Lechuza self watering containers but the are pretty expensive when you have a lot of plants - can you suggest another way to get the proper drainage without having to remove the pot out?
Hi! When you say "without removing the pot", do you mean keep the plant in its original nursery pot? Nursery pots have drainage holes. If you are keeping the plant in its nursery pot and place it in a cachepot, make sure it is not seating in a pool of water after watering.
Best to take it out of a cachepot, water, drain and then put it back.
*** Rather sooner than later the plant needs to be repotted and any pot with a drainage hole will work. Green Luck and thank you for watching! 🌱
very nice!! yes, so helpful!
Hi Charito,
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching 🌱
Hi Juliette! Thanks for your very informative video :) I just bought a BoP that's really tall and has 2 plants in the pot. It's spring here in tropical Australia so I want to split it into 2 outdoor plants. Once they're in the ground, can I keep splitting off any new plants in future? I'd prefer to have several smaller ones rather than letting them get too tall/wide. Presumably I can do it with a really sharp spade if I'm careful?
Hi Cassie,
Yes, you can dig them out and divide. Green Luck! 🌱
Hi Julia,
Great video! Are they quick to re-establish and start producing new leaves after division or do they take a few months?
Hi,
Thank you for watching!
After division, Bird of Paradise plants may experience temporary shock, but within a month or so, they will recover and begin to produce new leaves.
May your plants grow happy and healthy!
thank you so much for this video!

Bonjour merci pour la video
Mais à quelle periode doit on diviser ?
Avant ou apres l’hiver?
Bonne journée
Love your videos! If all of the stems on my bird of paradise had to be cut off should I also cut the entire stalk back to the ground?
Hi! Thank you for watching!
If all the stems removed, you may cut back your Bird Of Paradise plant:
- Use sharp, clean pruning shears amzn.to/3M1lJWg to make a clean cut and avoid damaging the plant.
- Clean the tool by spraying it with rubbing alcohol
- Prune your bird of paradise during early spring or fall
- Cut the plant' main stem back 5"-6" above the ground
- Fertilize your bird of paradise to provide nutrients for new growth.
My favorite plant food that can be used any time of the year mycityplants.com/products/all-purpose-fertilizer
_ Provide your plant with plenty of light (partial sun exposure)
- Establish a proper watering frequency and make sure the pot has drainage.
My must have tool is Soil Moisture meter amzn.to/3FezoFH.
Here is the video about how to use this tool: bit.ly/3TI2sMb
Water your Bird Of Paradise plant when the meter reading is down to zone 4-5
Green Cheers & May your plant grow happy and healthy!
I love all your videos. Sooooo helpful. We have a HUGE BOP. It’s like 10 feet by 10 feet and it’s containerized in our apartment. We got a huge new pot for it but I stupidly didn’t realize the opening of the larger pot was actually SMALLER than the previous pot. We had to shave sooooo many of the roots - several inches on each side. The plant definitely had a little shock. I’m hoping it’ll bounce back soon but I am worrried! We had two leaves unfurl but new new growths.
Hi Emily,
Wow! Sounds like you had a very challenging task with your Bird Of Paradise plant.
Yes, I think the plant should recover and bounce back in time.
You may use this plant food to help it to recover faster and grow mycityplants.com/products/all-purpose-fertilizer
This plant food can be used any time of the year, gentle and all natural. Will not burn roots.
May your plant recover and grow happy!

Hi, I have a BOP that has a Rihzome too close to the edge and is growing out in one direction. The plant collective is massive and I can't take it out of the pot - could I cut down between the two stalks and remove it that way?
Hi Craig,
Yes, you can cut down between the stalks and dig out the one that needs to be repotted or removed.
Green Luck! Thank you for watching 🌱

Thanks for the Video :-) I have a large Nicolai for two years now. Does the Nicolai create new stems after splitting it? Until now she didn't make new stems...2 years now.
Hi Peter,
New leaves of the Bird of Paradise plant should grow from the center of the stem/between other leaves.
If you are getting new leaves - all is good!
New stem might grow in time as well.
Green Cheers 🌱
Hello, Thanks for this. I have HUGE outdoor clay pots... can I just dig them out?
Hi! Thank you for watching!

thank you so much for this, I found via google search.
I have 2 streliza on flowers every year and looks sick. I was gifted an as yet to flower massive specimen which was leaning and looked like it was going to break. Roots were very entangled and the plants appered to come from same place. I now have 2 perfect looking upright streliza. I will separate the one that flowers when I know for sure this worked.

** Here is our Bird Of Paradise playlist bit.ly/3h6j1OQ where you can find more information about care for these beautiful plants
Thanks for your video. Very useful. May I know if my leaves keep curled after repotting what can I do about it? I have already watered them sufficiently
Hi Michael,
Repotting can be stressful and leaf curling might be the result of it.
Under or over watering, improper lighting may result in leaf curling as well.
I strongly recommend getting the Soil Moisture Meter bit.ly/2yuXVpc .
This tool will help you to understand when your plant is ready for a drink to avoid over or under watering.
Test the soil once every 7 days.
Bird Of Paradise plants should be watered when the meter reading is in the 4-5 zone.
Put your plant in a bright light area. Best with partial sun exposure of filtered sunlight.
Provide a good air circulation. If it is nice and warm in your location, keep windows open or have a fan on.
Watch my video about basic needs and care of this plant here: bit.ly/3L6Z2Oa
May your plant recover and grow happy! 🌱
what do you use before adding the soil? Also is there a best time to do so?
Hi! Thank you for watching!
- Lechuza planters have a sub-irrigation system and PON (substrate which goes at the bottom of the pot under the soil) is the part of this system.
**Here is the link to Lechuza shop: amzn.to/3We9IlH
If you want to learn more about how these planters work, here is the link to our Lechuza Playlist ruclips.net/video/BZgTlFgg-mw/видео.html
- It is best to divide the Bird Of Paradise plant in Spring-Summer (faster recovery) but we do it all year - round (when needed).
Green Cheers!
I have mine grown in the ground..Is it better to flower for it to be in a pot ?? I'm in Florida it's been in the 80's lately morning's around 60
Hi!
Unfortunately, I do not have any experience in growing plants outdoors but have seen many Bird of Paradise plants in Florida that are growing in the ground and blooming.
May your plant give you some flowers this year! 🌱
Thank you!!
Hi Mei,
Thank you for watching 🌱
Hi Juliette, what are you tipping into the pot prior to potting? Is it just a type of fertiliser?
Hi!
This is a special pure mineral substrate PON which is a part of the Lechuza planters sub-irrigation system. Help to keep water moisture levels and PH balance even, has infused fertilizer.
You may purchase this type of planters and/or PON here: www.lechuza.world/

Hi!

Green Luck! 🌱
Thank you! I just got a few birds of paradise plants for the first time and I'm loving your videos! Question-- I bought a planter that has about 8 different birds of paradise plants in the same planter, it's about 10 years old. I unpotted them to try to separate them but the roots are all completely wrapped around each other. It weighs about 200 lbs. It's beautiful but would like to separate a few so they can have more space to grow bigger. If I cut through a bunch of roots I am so scared to kill it! Have you split any very big ones that have any issues after cutting through the giant roots? I'm so worried about killing her!
Hi!
Yes, you my use a sharp knife to cut rots and separate plants.
If the roots are strong and healthy, the Bird Of Paradise plant will recover from the shock and grow many new leaves for you!
Green Luck & Thank you for watching!
Thank you
You're welcome! Glad it is helpful 🌱🌱🌱
Thanks for the vídeo! I had to Transplante mine and I accidentally damaged a bit the roots and I was so scared that she would die because of that

You're welcome! Thank you for watching 🌱
Thank you for a very informative video :) would it be possible to grow a new plant from some of the healthy roots you cut off? I have a BoP with only one stem so dividing the plant is not possible
Hi! Unfortunately not. Thank you for watching 🌱
I divided mine today because it simply isn’t growing, and I’ve had it for a year. I hope it does well!!!
Hi Sandy,
Make sure your Bird of Paradise plant:
- gets a good amount of light
- if you have not fertilize it yet, do it from now till end of September
** How and When To Fertilize plants video: bit.ly/3teZEaw
- check your watering routine.
Make sure the plant is not over or under-watered.
Soil should be dry approx. half way through before your plant gets watered.
* I strongly recommend getting the Soil Moisture Meter bit.ly/2yuXVpc
Bird of Paradise plants should be watered when the meter reading is in the 4-5 zone
- make sure the pot is not too small or too big for your plant.
The root system should have about 3-5 inches of soil around it.
- check the roots.
Take the plant out of the pot and examine the roots.
Any dark, mushy roots should be removed.
If you have lots of bad roots, after trimming those, repot the plant in a fresh soil
** make sure the pot has drainage and your plant is not sitting in water after watering.
*** You can find more videos about these plants in our Bird of Paradise Playlist:
bit.ly/3h6j1OQ
Green Luck, and hope your plants will get stronger and thrives! 🌱
Hi, from Lincolnshire England. I have a new Bird of paradise plant. The plant has roots coming out the bottom of the pot. I was told that this helps the plant to flower. Should I delay repotting till it f!owners?
Hi! Thank you for watching!
The Bird of Paradise plant is often reluctant to bloom indoors because it requires specific environmental conditions to thrive.
They need plenty of sunlight, high humidity, and well-draining soil to produce their iconic blooms. Plants may take several years to mature before it starts flowering.
Unfortunately, it can be challenging or even impossible to replicate the plant's natural habitat indoors, which can result in a reluctance to bloom.
If you have strelitzia reginae - I believe it blooms April to June in your part of the world.
If no flowers are produced for you during this period and the roots are poking out, you can repot your Bird of Paradise plant.
Cho0se a pot about 5" larger for repotting. These plants grow roots pretty fast.
Here in NYC we mostly carry strelitzia nicolai and I have never seen these plants flower in NYC. :)
Green Cheers!
Thank you for this great video. What was in the bag you put in the bottom of the pot?
Thank you for watching! 🌱
This is a special substrate that is a part of Lechuza planter's sub-irrigation system.
It's called PON. Also can be used instead of soil.
Learn more about it here: mycityplants.com/collections/potting-mix/products/lechuza-pon
Hi! Very nice video! I have a huge BoP, but it only has one single stem. Is there a way to create more stems on one plant? I'd prefer to have it grow wider instead of higher. Thank you for your advice!
Hi Anne-Sophie,
The Bird Of Paradise grows new leaves from the center of the stem, between the leaves. As it grows new leaves, the plant gets to be not only taller but wider as well.
If the plant gets too tall, you may cut back the tallest leaves to keep it at the desired height.
Here is the video about how to prune Bird Of Paradise: ruclips.net/video/ZzC3mCYahts/видео.html
If you want to have a fuller arrangement, you may pot a few stems together. The plant I am dividing in this video has a few stems potted in one pot.
Green Chers & Thank you for watching 🌱
Can you do more videos on bird of paradise?
What potting soil do you use? They look so soft. Please give me the formula to create the potting soil you have.
Hi Thuvan,
Thank you for watching 🌱
We and our plants LOVE the potting mix we use.
Here is the link where you can learn a bit more about it: mycityplants.com/products/indoor-potting-mix
Green Cheers!
Thank you Juliette !!! I have a little question. What did you put in the bottom of the largest pot !? Thank you
Hello Nathalie,
I am using planters with sub-irrigation system.
PON (special substrate) goes at the bottom of the planter for the system to work properly.
All pots come with the needed amount of PON.
Green Cheers! 🌱
Well i messed up. I saw a 25$ strelitzia and snatched it. Definitely a nicholai, so i can have it s whole one place.
Hi and thank you for watching 🌱
May you new Bird of paradise grow happy and healthy!
Hello!! great video but I need further help. we have many giant BOP plants in large terra cotta vases. every spring, they crack the vases so we need to buy new! We have decided to try and get ahead by dividing each spring. In your video all the plants are more or less separated already in the vase. our situation is that each “mother” has 2,3 even four babies that are growing directly from the mothers stem. and in cutting them away they do not have any roots or rhyzomes of their own as they are growing directly from the mom’s stem. so we now have a bucket full of babies without any roots! Is there any hope for their survival? we have no choice but to remove them and thin the plant as they have already broken a costly ceramic vase. is there any way to speed up root growth of these babies with some action in the fall that would result in adequate roots by springtime in order to divide safely? any help appreciated here!!
Hi! Wow! What a story .... Unfortunately, those babies of your Bird Of Paradise plant will not develop roots if they do not have some already. Here is a helpful article about how to properly propagate offshoots: bit.ly/3TWxyjB

Hi very informative video. I have a bird of paradise growing outside. I live in Florida zone 9. I’ve noticed my bird of paradise leaves curl in the afternoon and unfurl in the evening. Is this normal when growing the plant outside? I make sure I keep it watered. So I don’t know why it curls.
Hi Phyllis,
Thank you for watching 🌱
Unfortunately, I do not have any experience in growing plants outdoors and will not be able to provide an advise.
Lucky for us there are lots of experts here on RUclips 😀
Hope you will find your answer.
This was so helpful! I only have a single stem which might be around 4ft tall but she has already outgrown her 10" as well as 12" pot in just a year! Do you think she has way too many roots? If not, is it possible to divide one stem into 2?
Hi Fatema,
One stem can not be divided as it grows from one root "bulb".
You may prune roots back (no ore than 20%) to keep it in its 12"pot longer.
Green Luck, and than you for watching 🌱
Hola Juliette...cual es la diferencia fisica entre strelitzia nicolae y reginae... gracias saludos desde Peru🇵🇪
Hi Juliette, is there any special care needed to help the plant recover from the shock? Does it need watering often etc? I noticed some of my leaves are drooping since i divided them. I've added the support sticks but other than that, not sure what else i can do to help it recover
Hi!
-Yes, more frequent watering is required for the first month or so.
Make sure to use enough water to reach the lower soil levels.
***Best to get Soil Moisture Meter so you can establish a proper watering frequency: mycityplants.com/collections/indoor-plant-tools/products/soil-moisture-meter
First month or so water divided stems when the meter reading is in the 5-6 zone, then when the meter reading is in the 4-5 zone.
-Put the plant is in a bright light area. Does not have to be under direct sun. *** A few hours of early morning sun will be very beneficial.
-Leaves that will not recover, can be removed. Here is how: bit.ly/30JifQZ
GREEN LUCK!
I wanted to know how to propagate from a huge in the ground plant
Hi! Thank you for watching.
We are specializing in indoor plants potted in pots but the propagating method is the same for potted in a pot or in ground plant. You just have to dig yours out to divide 😀
Green Luck! 🌱
I love your videos with a bird of paradise I need some help with my bird of paradise are folded up really bad in my plant I only got one it's leaning over really bad so he put tomato cage then I noticed so I need some help really bad thank you very much😢
Hi! Thank you for watching! Sorry to hear that you plant is struggling :(
Bird of Paradise leaves folding up can be caused by a few factors:
- Underwatering: If the plant isn't getting enough water, its leaves may fold to conserve moisture.
- Overwatering: Excess water can lead to root rot, which prevents the plant from absorbing oxygen and nutrients properly. This stress on the root system can cause the leaves to fold or wilt.
- Low Humidity: Bird of Paradise plants thrive in humid environments, and low humidity can cause the leaves to fold.
- Too Much Direct Sunlight: Excessive exposure to direct sunlight may lead to stress, causing the leaves to fold up.
- Temperature Stress: Cold temperatures or drafts can cause leaves to curl or fold.
- Lack of Nutrients: If the plant is not receiving enough nutrients, the leaves may fold or droop as a sign of nutrient deficiency.
- Pest Issues: Pests like spider mites can cause stress to the plant, leading to folding leaves.
Hope this will help to determine the cause.

My BoP has only one stem and is about 8 ft tall with 2’ newest leaves in the middle. Is there a way to encourage new stems to add the heartiness instead of increased height?
Hi! Thank you for watching.
New leaves typically emerge from the center of the stems of the Bird of Paradise plant, making it challenging to achieve a fuller shape.
However, a potential solution is to prune the plant back entirely, allowing new leaves to develop and grow from the ground up.
This approach can help reshape the plant and encourage a more balanced and fuller appearance.
