      I have had my BOP for at least six years. All this time I thought it was a banana tree! I am no plant expert and never reported it! It started out as a 3 ft tall plant that grew to over 15 ft! I was thrilled and clearly it loves the corner of my 2 story family room that I placed it. Soon after reaching 15 ft I noticed that the stalks were starting to droop and the leaves wouldn’t unfurl. After watching your video I now know it is way pass time that I repot it into a bigger pot and refresh the soil. I am so happy that I found your video. Thanks and wish me luck!

    I started a bird of paradise from seed. Its was black with a fuzzy orange top. I had my plant for 35 years and at one time it had 13 flowers on it at once. It made the local paper. I live in Ontario Canada, It was an indoor plant. I transplanted it and the massive roots were amazing. I had to use an exacto knife it cut the pot and had to have my son to help me pull it out. I love it . I no longer have it. I was offered 600.00 from our local flower shop but I babied this plant from the beginning.

    I’ve always liked tropicals but my apartment lighting and temperature just wasn’t suited for these awesome plants; I thought my patio and front porch were too hot.
    But I found out they Love my northeast exposure .
    They get great morning sun,and our humidity does all the work for me.
    My Reginae enjoys a prominent spot at my front door in a 2 ft tall urn that displays it perfectly. Mine are only 1 ft tall , but are growing perfectly green leaves.
    My Alocasias and philodendrons are also thriving in my outdoor space. I Finally found the right areas to enjoy my tropicals👍🏻

Bird of paradise love full sun, but if they weren’t used to it, the leaves could potentially burn if you transition this too quickly. Hope that helps!

I also have a really sunny livingroom window that faces East, where all my other plants have died in that position, so I think the only thing that will live there will be a Strelitzia. Flower power can be a little on the expensive side, I originally got mine at a sale from the grow centre (but not sure if they exist anymore), otherwise your local Bunnings might have some decent options! I’m sure yours will do well - if you’re already looking up videos then you’re well on the way ☺️🍀

    saw this on my recommended bc i recently went on an indoor plant binge at ikea, costco and my local popular plant nursery and bought a bunch for my studio incl. a cheaper baby sized BOP haha. I'm really nervous and scared of pests being in the soil and me not realizing, do you find pests are very common on houseplants?? I dont see any currently on them. i also dont plan on using organic compost as 'fertilizer' because my studio space gets flies and fruit flies and i dont want them to entice the flying bugs.

    • @simpleplanty
      @simpleplanty  2 года назад +2

      Hi there! Amazing, first of all, welcome to the world of plants! Pests are unfortunately a very common occurrence, but it is really 'luck of the draw' when you purchase them. I've had some with absolutely no issues at all, but then some that have been infested (and sometimes they only show up after a couple days/weeks!) Don't be nervous - any pests can be taken care of with proper treatment and since you have so many, you might want to consider at least purchasing some organic pest control/sprays such as eco or neem oil for preventative / reactive care. But totally okay if you don't as there are some home remedies to start off with particular pests (i.e diluted dishwashing liquid, etc.) If you don't notice any so far, that's great! Just keep naturally inspecting the leaves and the soil on a weekly basis. Crossing my fingers for you!

    Hi thanks for the tips. I just recently purchased a bop and I had a few questions I’m hoping you can answer. I live in a small studio apartment with three large windows that face SW. I’m stuck because I’d like to leave the plant there however due to the draft and ac vents pointing directly at the windows, I figured it wouldn’t be a great spot at least through winter. Additionally I’ve noticed the leaves curling inwards. Since then I’ve bought a full spectrum grow light and humidifier. My question is with the supplemented light, should I move the plant away from the window given the circumstances? I ask because i feel like it would be missing some good sun here and there and not sure if a grow light would be sufficient enough through winter. Also, during the spring and summer should I continue to use the grow light in conjunction with natural sunlight? Thank you I’m advance!

    • @simpleplanty
      @simpleplanty  Год назад

      Hi Joshua - nice to meet you! Which part of the world are you from? Asking, as this will dictate my answer around your apartment orientation of SW and how much light normally hits your apartment, as well as humidity. Generally I would keep my plants away from the vents where possible, and if you do have a full spectrum grow light, this could potentially be an alternative solution to natural sun. How long ago did you get your bop?

    • @simpleplanty
      @simpleplanty  Год назад +1

      No worries, you can safely trim the leaves off from the base and if anything, this will help promote future growth as the energy gets redirected. You could also prune those yellow leaves down too - all part of the leaf lifecycle as the lower ones will die off, expend the energy into bigger and better ones. Hope that helps ☺️🍀

    Great information and tips - I own 2 and love them but how do you water them ? Do you remove them from the larger pot to allow for drainage?

    • @simpleplanty
      @simpleplanty  2 года назад +3

      No worries! Thankyou for watching! ☺️ Absolutely, as a rough guide, you generally should always try to discard any excess water that has accumulated in the saucer to prevent overwatering and root rot - however, I know the BOP is really big and heavy, but once you figure out how much water it rougly takes to get to the bottom without large overflow, then that should be okay not to pull the plant out constantly when you water it. For example, I have a 2L watering can, and I've figured out it takes about ~1.2L of water for it to flow to the bottom and allow for the soil to be completely saturated after I had watered it a couple of times (my giant one is sitting in a 30cm diameter pot). If it's a small plant, just make it routine to discard ☺️ Hope that helps!

    Hi I just purchased a BOP and I also repotted, however today I noticed that my leaves are starting to curl/cup a bit. Hi! Not to worry, sounds like the tell tale signs of repot shock. Just checking, after your repot, did you water this thoroughly where you allowed the water to pass through all the way to the bottom of the drainage holes? If so, all ok. They're generally quite heavy feeders and need a good drink 😊 Give it some time, it'll bounce back! I can understand why you're worried, they're beautiful specimens! Lovely video, thank you!
    I have a question: can you prune the roots of a strelizia? Like taking it out of the pot, cutting/sewing 1/3 of the bottom and put it back with some new soil? I have seen videos about that but not about the strelizia. And mine are my babies, so i dont have the guts. But there is no soil left and the space is limited.
    I actually have 4 different types of strelizia. None of them are the Nicolai. A 2 meter tall double one I placed in a 40L bucket as a couldn't find a pot big enough. I think it's about 10 years old. Reginae.
    And i bought 3 types of seeds on the table mountain kirstenbosch botanical garden in Cape Town. It took me 4 years to create little plants. Now one of them is 12 years old and flowers for the second time (you need some patience here in the Netherlands. Our climate is different) However end of spring (as soon as it won't freeze anymore) I put them in the garden (half shadow( and take them back in when it's 10 degrees outside (half autumn). When they are indoors (18-19 degrees Celsius) they think it's spring and flower indoors!! That's way better!! And was the best trick I've read somewhere
    I actually never had bugs. Perhaps because I put them outside for months. There must be some ladybugs or other natural "predators"
    Perhaps I don't notice as all they other tropical plants (plumeria/frangipani, hibiscus and cordyline) are an absolute pain in the ass over here to grow inside. Every night there is a big mite party on another leave. Like they're club hopping. I can't wait till i can take them outside again in my tiny tropical oasis (yes, in the freezing Netherlands...)
    Why is it you always like plants that are not local? Tulips and daffodils grow like weed and i dont even look up when I see them 😂
    I hope you (or someone else) can help me grow some "root pruning balls"
    🙏🏻

    • @simpleplanty
      @simpleplanty  Год назад +1

      Hi Adinda - thanks for watching and I’m glad I could help out in some shape or form!
      You definitely could prune those roots back by the method in which you mentioned, although I generally wouldn’t, as it does temporarily stunt its growth. This is generally speaking, as when I have repot my strelitzia in the past, I have removed some roots in the process, and they are all still growing quite healthily. If you are intending to propagate, that would be a different matter/method.
      Sounds awesome that you have 4! Have you run out of space yet? 😂 You sound like a seasoned pro, so if anything I feel like I should be taking advice from you! Thanks so much for sharing all your experience, it’s always insightful and helpful to hear off others on how they are growing (pun-intended)! It also sounds like you’ve got a good ecosystem, perhaps those bugs are eating other bugs and that is hilarious how you called it ‘club hopping’ - I certainly had a little chuckle!
      It is strange huh, maybe it all comes down to the concept of how people don’t normally travel as much around their country or fancy things that are within their reach/vicinity and search for something or want something more ‘exotic’. I definitely am a sucker of this concept!
      It was lovely hearing from you ☺️

    • @simpleplanty
      @simpleplanty  2 года назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for watching and nice to meet you!
      Regarding transplanting, there are two approaches for when you bring it home - either waiting for the plant to adjust to the environment for a couple of months before repotting (to reduce transplant stress) or go straight for the transplant as soon as you bring it home (which is the riskier approach). I have done both with success - the safest is to do this during the Spring/Summer months, as this is when the plant is its strongest. I would encourage mixing your soil substrate with ones that allow for air flow - so lechuza pon is a great option as well.

      Hi Anecia! Lovely to hear from you ☺️ In my opinion, nurseries, stores and even websites will call their products whatever they want to market their products - which location are you from? Here in Australia, I've not seen it called as 'indoor nicolai' but without knowing the measurements and sizes that you've visibly seen, my guess here is that they've labelled the smaller ones as indoors and there are actually nicolai's that I've seen in large hardware stores that would no way fit an indoor space (they are GIANT!!! Like triple my height!). Also, try googling 'Strelitzia Alba', those 'outdoor nicolai' could be very similar 😉 Hope that helps!

    • @simpleplanty

      Hi! Strelitzia's will bloom if they're growing extremely happily - so usually it involves a lot of direct sunlight, humidity/heat, proper watering, etc.etc. I am on Instagram @simpleplantation but haven't been as active lately - hopefully that helps ☺️🌱

    Can you use artificial lights? Indoors

    • @simpleplanty
      @simpleplanty  Год назад +1

      Hey Sam! You could use artificial light indoors, but need to ensure that there's enough intensity in order for it to maintain its growth. The bird of paradise in particular needs quite an extended period of bright light (ie 5-6 hours), so need to make sure there's enough in order to keep your plant happy. Hope that helps! 😊🌱

    Why is the price of a bird of paradise in all countries of the world so high! ?
    Is it rare?
    I live in the eastern countries of Iraq and the summer is hot and long and the farmers advised me not to cover the bird of paradise and let it adapt to the heat? Is this possible?

    Are they expensive in your country because i live in Poland, its central europe and large STRELITZIA are very expensive. the big one you passed on the way would cost like 2K euros at least

    • @simpleplanty
      @simpleplanty  2 года назад +1

      Oh my gosh! 2k euros! That's a very hefty price - I actually saw one for a similar size at the store and it would have been no more than 200 euros if memory serves me correctly. I just converted the price I paid for my one and it was 42 euros, but normally they would cost 75 euro for that size here in Australia! Also, I've visited Krakow and Warsaw, was a great place. Nice to meet you 😊

    Why not use pesticide? Mealy bugs are very easy to kill, and they don't come back like spider mites. I don't think rubbing alcohol is a good idea, as it destroys the protection layer on the leaves and can do damage to the plants.

    • @simpleplanty
      @simpleplanty  3 месяца назад

      Hi Amanda - absolutely, you can use pesticide pretty safely if you wish ☺️ I use a whole bundle different ones, depending on what I am treating! White oil has also been serving me quite well as of recent - but best to be sprayed outdoors.
