As a plant hack for overwatering you can shove a couple of tampons into the dirt to absorb the extra water. They are large plants and difficult to repot. Plus this way you don’t disturb the roots. 💚🎅🏼🤶🏻🎄🎁🦌

Hi! I wanted to give a bit of advice. I’m a chemist and letting water sit out does not dissipate salts/minerals because they are not soluble in air. If anything, the water will evaporate, making the salts and minerals more concentrated in the solution. If you were to boil salt water until it was gone, salt would be left because it doesn’t evaporate. Just a friendly tip!

I'm just recently getting into getting plant babies. I got a monstera deliciosa, philodendron Birkin and the bird of paradise. I'm finding that the BOP is the most picky plant I have right now. Definitely did not like tap water so I've switched to distilled. I also started running a humidifier since the air is quite dry during the summer with the ac on. I think I overwatered it a couple times and it wasn't drying out so I finally decided to repot it. So much to learn but I'm loving it!

Hi Emma ( and fellow plant lovers)! I might have some flowering tips. I've got a few strelitzias. One big one that reaches the ceiling. I used to take it out in the late spring and summer and took it back in when temperatures reaches 10 degrees Celsius. It then mimicks spring indoors and it gave me flowers during the winter in front of an ceiling high northwest facing window.
I also have one about a meter high. I took a few seeds from the Botanical garden in Cape Town in 2012 and it flowered every winter from 2020 (they have to be at least 7 years old before starting to flower). I even didn't take it outdoors last spring/summer. It almost seems like it take 2 years to establish flowering. So taking it out summer 2024 it will flower winter 2025/2026.
I repotted it in Soil Ninja soil alst autumn and it is thriving! I use Liquid Gold Leave as well but I found out 3-1-2 works better. I started using Bio Fish mix.
I love the experimenting, but i love the flowers even more.
Did yours flower yet? Do you have some additional advice?
What I don't get is why i see so many strelitzias with thin almost floppy leaves (like yours) while mine are rigid and sturdy. Do you have any idea how comes?
The problem I have is the leaves gettting a bit stuck while unfolding and are a bit "ribbed". Spraying them while unfolding helps.
Keep up the amzing work. I love your videos!!

These things are beasts! I bought mine in May (I live in Chicago), and they grew like nuts throughout the summer - but they did curl up their leaves during the super hot parts of the day. I dragged them inside before we got a frost, and they are thriving in my large south facing bedroom windows. They are now about four feet tall and throwing out new leaf spears every couple months.

Hey Chicagoan! Just got mine a few days and literally the 4th day the leaves are curling watered yesterday have a rock inside my pot so it drains out. These plants can tolerate 50-60 degree tempts.I have two BOP in planters outside now. I live in Zone 6. This year we’ve had a warm fall (60’s-70’s) but at night temps drop below 50. I plan on digging them up and bringing them inside soon. One smal problem I’ve had w/ my indoor BOP are mealy bugs. Examine budding new and unfurled leaved too.

What you've got there is a Strelitzia nicolai, not a S. reginae. While they are related closely, they look very different. S. nicolai grows for the most part on a single stalk and is MUCH larger leafed. At maturity, they produce white "birds" flowers on a bract. S. reginae, also known as the "orange" bird, grows in clumps with multiple stalks, while their leaves are MUCH smaller in size. I thought you'd want to know that distinction.

Hi thanks for the tips. I just recently purchased a bop and I had a few questions I’m hoping you can answer. I live in a small studio apartment with three large windows that face SW. I’m stuck because I’d like to leave the plant there however due to the draft and ac vents pointing directly at the windows, I figured it wouldn’t be a great spot at least through winter. Additionally I’ve noticed the leaves curling inwards. Since then I’ve bought a full spectrum grow light and humidifier. My question is with the supplemented light, should I move the plant away from the window given the circumstances? I ask because i feel like it would be missing some good sun here and there and not sure if a grow light would be sufficient enough through winter. Also, during the spring and summer should I continue to use the grow light in conjunction with natural sunlight? Thank you I’m advance!

It's pretty normal to not have new leaves right away and also though the autumn and winter months. Mine has only just started to pop out some new leaves this year so be patient. Also if you've not already, give it some houseplant fertiliser every 2 weeks or so in the growing season and hopefully that will help.
As for splitting leaves, that's pretty normal as the leaf hardens out. I wouldn't worry unless they're starting to go crispy and brown. Then raise the humidity

I have quite a big bird of paradise (around 5 feet and 20+ leaves), recently a couple of the largest middle leaves have started browning and then going yellow before they die. Only affecting biggest leaves so far and it still has ongoing new growth. Any ideas why this might be?

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  3 года назад

Hmm I'm not too sure. As it's the middle leaves I don't think it sounds like a watering issue. Maybe it's got pests. Thrips tend to go unnoticed, especially in big plants!

that's not a Stralitza Reginae your showing, it's Stralitizia Nicolai with the large leaves. The Reginae has the small leaves but the beautiful flowers that we all love. The one your showing will have the white flower. Yes you can get them to flower at home, I had two on mine and still have a flower on the way. They need at least six hours of sun a day or use a grow light.

    • @GoodGrowing

I got it direct from their website but you can buy it from soil ninja if you want. Splits are totally normal, and don’t harm the plant. but you can cut them off if you don’t like how they look. I’d personally leave them until you’ve got lots more

were the leaves browning in a crispy way or a mushy way. If it was mushy then it's likely overwatering/too dense of soil. If it was crispy, might be worth upping the humidity
