My parlour palm only entered my life because it was cheap, but since then I’ve fallen in love with how it thrives in a pretty rubbish spot. It’s just cheerful no matter what light it gets and I love it for that.
Love love your videos. My mom always had houseplants everywhere and I never cared much about them. Now that she’s passed away I seem to be drawn to them. I know NOTHING about them. Should’ve listened to mom. But instead of mom I found Mr Sheffield. Thank you sir. Mom approves!!
I live in a tiny flat with barely any light and no useable windowsills, and have recently added a dracaena to the same windowless corner that has been happily occupied by my english ivy since last august. I'm just starting to learn about plant care and made some barely educated guesses for my plant placements, glad to see I seem to have made the right choice there (even if they're both plants you're not too fond of haha) will definitely save this video for inspiration!
I can validate the peace lily. Moved into a new home and the bathroom does not have a window. I do get natural low light from the patio from a distance of about 10 meters and I did place a grow light in the bathroom, still baby girl is alive and pushing out leaves, the flowers that were already there when I purchased the plant are holding up nicely. It's happy, I'm happy.
As someone that primarily have succulents, haworthias are actually fine in relatively lower light, I have a line of windowed ones on my north windows and not only are they alive, half are starting to grow flower stalks so they’re happy enough being on the worst side. Those leaves honestly look more like a rot problem which is common if you forget that they’re desert plants.
I find your video's aspiring! My peace Lilly is a true drama queen, but ever since I give her rain water she is thriving, not blooming, but she throws a lot less tantrums. 😅 Thanks for all your good advice!
Hi ! When I come to your channel i’m learning so much more than ive ever known now , I feel more passionate about starting a mini jungle … lol I love listening to your voice and adore your sense of humor 😉 hugs from sunny Florida ☀️🤗
Thank you so much Richard. I really really enjoyed listening to you talk about low light plants. So once more you’ve given us all some insight into what plant goes where. Please stay safe and well too xxxx Mags ❤❤❤
I am very lucky with all my plants, I have no clue , if there need much or little light, much or little water , I just put them where I want to put them and they all do well. I start converting all my plants from soul to leca and they all thrive
I got a couple of them JML-Hygro pods lights from Asda Great for a herb garden on a north facing window And for brightening up a dark corner with some indoor ferns and succulents. The Light head can flat spin 180°on a telescopic rod (car ariel) and work like a mini street light. If turned backwards Flooding a bigger square around its single self wicking pot So you can get 5 more short plants around it, One either side and a row of 3 infront. Highly recommend at 20 bucks each Well worth checking out.
I just love the way you hug your plants, I think it's kool, I hugged my mango tree just this morning 😊😊 wished it could've hugged me back 😅 your plants look great. ❤❤
Thanks, this is such a perfect topic for Nordic countries, Christmas time we had just about 7 hours of daylight...but it was always seriously cloudy. So any tips are welcome!
I live in an east facing duplex with few window options for light. I have one spot on the third floor that gets morning sun. Even then I use grow lights throughout the house. My snake plant is a champion and looks great, and my Boston fern is in a west facing window and seems to thrive there. So thanks for the tips! Knowing which plants I should be considering for low light is a big help.
Yeah. I live in Wisconsin, and my windows are east and north. Shade plants are my friends. I do have a strong grow light in one corner though, so I can indulge in a few higher light plants, like those carnivorous plants.
I've got a philodendron scandens on my bathroom cabinet. Gets some amount of light but with it being more high up and towards a corner, I was happy that It'd do well in lower light too.
@SheffieldMadePlants 😅 I can just see him now, looking around the room with a sheepish expression on his countenance so he's certain no one is watching and then proceeding with his ever so gentle and careful hug. 😅
I am in love with the peperomia raindrop! Never seen one before but going to get me one tomorrow! Thank you for your videos - I ADORE them and my plants thank you too! 😉
My Nephrolepis has been doing great for a year, plenty of light near my SW facing windows. It's directly above my radiator, still looks as lush as last summer. Great plant for some volume!
I've made the opposite experience with Calathea and ferns. My big Calathea warscewiczii and Calathea ornata are under a grow light with at least medium light (for 10h) and my maiden hair fern is in recovery under a cheap led strip grow light for 12h. Anything under these conditions and they crisp up. Rubber trees and dracaenas do well in low light. At least the ones in my brothers room, which gets only a few hours of very indirect light a day at best. They can also take massive under watering. Otherwise, philodendron Micans, crawling philodendron (usually) and hyacinths (had mine 3m away from a window, no water for over 6 months, on a heater that gets burning hot - I thought they were dead, thus no care and now they are sprouting again) can take lower light.
My cacti stay in dark corners for half an year or longer and I don't water them. They may not grow but they don't die neither. Off course I put them outside in the summer but you get the point.
English ivy has me blow up like the Michelin Mascotte their poison I'm hyper allergic to. After installing a small 35 Liter rainwater collector in between 1 of my rain pipes and watering with that has done absolute wonders for all my plants, couldn't recommend it enough for every plant owner! Greetings from Holland
I loved your zero light experiment vid last year!! Sally the snake is a living legend.. 🤣 Tradescantia zebrina grows without light.. I have a big pot of it in a corner of the garden that is in constant shade, not a drop of sunlight *ever..* and it's grown and flowered like crazy!! 🤷🏻♀️
Tradescantia zebrina was definitely not a favourite of mine which is why I shoved it in a dark corner.. 🤭 Now I think it's really quite a pretty plant.. 😅
i've seen your bay window, light floods in and I'm jealous! my house is dark in summer, but at least I can still have plants! love your channel fellow northerner
Hi, I think just before you did ferns that was a calathea and I got it for 2 bucks here in HOUSTON and I took it home and I put it in my bathroom behind frosted glass and it seems to be doing well
Wow! There's a few plants you listed that I've always wanted but been afraid because of what I hear about them. Like, the dragon scale needing high humidity, ivy plants that attract spider mites and calatheas being finicky. I think I need more plant experience before I can be comfortable in purchasing those. 😅 I can still dream until then 😊
My Boston fern in the bathroom DIED!! I purchased another ~ split into tow pots ~ one with morning sun and the other with inconsistent sun. Morning sun seems to be the only location where they thrive.
I was not surprised to see a Monstera as the first item on this list. I have one that I bought a couple years ago from a Trader Joe's. I brought him in for the winter, and he's currently in a corner of my office, about 3-4 meters from the nearest window. And just a couple weeks ago he put out two brand new leaves, both of which are fenestrated. I was surprised and delighted to see how well he's done inside. In fact, he's gotten big enough that it's looking like time to break him up into a few smaller plants, one of which I'm probably going to keep inside this summer, just to keep some green in my workspace.
If I can offload a dozen or so of my spider baby, jade, and dragon fruit props I'll have some room for some of the gorgeous plants mentioned in this video!
Kentia palm is another shade warrior. I have one in the darkest corner of my house about 6 metres from a window and it seems quite happy. We have another at my workplace, in a converted barn with very little light and it too is thriving.
Our house gets full direct sun 12+ hours a day on one side during summer (we live above the arctic circle), and the other side is situated against our uphill back garden... So we have pretty much nothing in between 😅 I'm always looking for options to put in our bathroom, guest room and hallway on the "dark" side. My Monsteras are in the full direct sun windows, but maybe I'll take a cutting and stick it in the bathroom 🤔
I was told by an experienced plant collector that a Raven ZZ plant is one of the exceptions to the rule: "the darker the plant's leaves are, the less light it needs". They said that the Raven variety needs more light than a 'regular'/green ZZ plant. I have not actually tried testing this, but perhaps you could? 😀
Those are some great picks, especially the pothos and syngonium. However they have nothing on my asplenium dimorphum. It lives three meters away from my north facing window behind another plant but it still manages to grow rather quickly. What it does need, however, is water and lots of it.
I got a beeeeaaautiful Aglaonema Pink Star for my bedroom recently and she's been sitting next to me away from the windows....not that there's any space by the windows.😅 She's my favourite green child now. But I dare not leave Pink in low light so she's got her very own growlight so she grows to be as big as your tigris 😊 so I was wondering if you keep the growlights on all day? I have east facing bedroom windows so I tend to switch them on in the afternoon. Is that enough?
Love this list! Gonna try growing aglaonemas (although for some reason they are not very common where I live). Unfortunately, my snake plant grew a lot of ugly thin leaves when it lacked light... I'm looking for a better spot for it now. Philodendron scandens also did not enjoy being a couple of meters away from the south-facing window. But the zz plant is an absolute trooper, this thing THRIVES in its spot three meters away from the nearest window. Also, on the topic of calatheas: Ctenanthe burle-marxii (fishbone plant) is standing near the zz plant and while its stems are quite long, it is lush and leafy and has no intentions to die. Also very much recommended!
My peperomia teardrop was in relatively low light, next to a struggling spider plant and a thriving peace lily and it became leggy and was dropping leaves at an alarming rate. I put a grow light above it and it’s now a happy camper! Personally, I would not include it on this list.
Mr. Schefield, in an emergency, I used a grow bulb on my ceiling fan for light. It happened to face the area where my plants are and they love it even though they're already next to a window. Might you consider adding a dome light with a grow bulb so ALL of your plants can get light from one source? Additionally the light placement mimics the sun even more. 😊
Hello from Seattle Washington! I just found your channel and I am so glad. I have a question about your Peperomia Raindrop. Did you give her something to climb up on, because all the picture I see on the internet, show this as a short bushy plant and I prefer the look of your plant. I look forward to hearing from you as I believe this little lady would be perfect for my North facing window. Cheers 🌱
@@SheffieldMadePlants in fact you told me that peace lily is trusty plant and keep it soil wet. I got results so just informed you. Thanks for the suggestion.
Your peperomia raindrop is beautiful. What am I doing wrong? Not yellowing but not thriving. I let dry a lor. But pale. Any ideas? I am now guessing not enough light.
I have no South facing windows at all, North and West. My alocosia is facing north, and so far, she's happy. Ficus, monstera great, some others though looking sad. I was thinking about painting the sitting room a dark colour, but wondering if that's going to make it worse. My parlour palms are wretched, but I think that's the draughts. Love living in a victorian house, but not ideal for sensitive to cold plants. Very interesting, I'll look for some you've mentioned.
I have a pretty gloomy home all around and besides the luck ones that got a spot at one of the window sills, they all live 3 to 4m away from the light that my level floor with balconies above can provide. I can say that (knock on wood) both my Adansonii and my Peru have been doing well thru out this winter, so I would also suggest these Monsteras which are a bit less ubiquitous than the Deliciosa. Likewise, I have recently got both a mature Piece Lilly and a Cast Iron and so far so good, the latter is supposedly one of the safest bets for low-light situations on par with the ZZ and not as common.
Hi and hello from Canada! Ive learned a lot from your vids. Any chance you could do one on easy care houseplants that are non-toxic to cats? Hope you have a wonderful day!
I grow a lot of low light plants. My favourites are jewel orchids. Then I have a supplementary light on them. Alocasia I growing in a terrarium with full grow light treatment, still not looking the best. Some plants just want to be hated
I currently have about thirty ferns, and it's true, they survive in low light, but if you really want them to thrive and grow bigger, then they should go in bright indirect sunlight. If they are in low light, they will survive but often not grow. Also, they need a lot of water anyways, but if they are in bright conditions they need even more!
Snake plants are truly indestructible, but I did somehow manage to kill my English ivy. It almost died when I first got it, but I managed to bring it back to life and it was doing really good for a year or so and then the leaves suddenly started drying off and it died this winter. I might have watered it too little... or maybe too much. Possibly both. It's hard to tell sometimes lol.
Can you have three stems in one pot? I'm just thinking about Raindrop pepperonia. Does the same apply to Pilea Pepperonis? And thank you, your videos are extremely helpful. I am just beginner. I bought 3 plants week ago. (semi light/dark room - pilea, pepperonia 2 variations)
I enjoy your videos! I am having issues with my Money tree. Leaves are falling off and it is near a window but not in direct light. What is your recommendation? I have the water meter in the pot . It is between dry and moist.
I love your videos! I've been spamming them since my plant obsession started a couple of months ago. Could you please recommend me a plant that will thrive in a bathroom window with indirect sun light and lots of humidity? Many thanks!
Can you do a video on how to tell the difference between a neon plant and a lemon lime? Im havibg a hard time telling them apart. And of course it didn't say on the pot when I bought it. Please? Please? Please?
My peace lily has been in the dark hallway (in Edinburgh) for the past 6 years but keeps trying to flower. As I don’t like the flower I’m having to cut then off every time 😂

All covered in the disclaimer at the beginning 😅
@@SheffieldMadePlants haha I heard that! I'm just always excited to talk about ferns!
We live and learn hopefully 😁
Hello love your channel your videos are the best
Hey, thanks!
You can have 3 stems yes. Makes the pot bushy
I wanted the green orange plant sooo much and now I have it I hate it 🤣 I’ll persevere with the treated water though and hope for the best come summer
It takes time to settle for sure
I enjoy your videos! I am having issues with my Money tree. Leaves are falling off and it is near a window but not in direct light. What is your recommendation? I have the water meter in the pot . It is between dry and moist.
Hard to say without seeing it. How do the roots look? Is the soil good?
I love your videos! I've been spamming them since my plant obsession started a couple of months ago. Could you please recommend me a plant that will thrive in a bathroom window with indirect sun light and lots of humidity? Many thanks!
A Calathea should work
My peace Lily didn’t do anything for over a year in soil and then I put her in Leca… a couple of weeks later, and I got two flowers 😅
Nice!
@@SheffieldMadePlants thanks ☺️
Love from Panjab ❤
Can you do a video on how to tell the difference between a neon plant and a lemon lime? Im havibg a hard time telling them apart. And of course it didn't say on the pot when I bought it. Please? Please? Please?
Lovely! Love commentary 😊
Thanks! 😊
I love your channel and also am just running a little high on the grow light spectrum.
Thanks!
I have a corn plant dracaena massangeana. Does it need lots if light? I have away from a window but did buy a light for it. Can you advise please
Not had the plant but I’d say it probably needs good lignt
Thank you : )
You are the best
Thanks you too!
thanks
even the king of low light plants couldnt survive my house water propagating with proper techniques
My peace lily has been in the dark hallway (in Edinburgh) for the past 6 years but keeps trying to flower. As I don’t like the flower I’m having to cut then off every time 😂
Syngonium looked a touch leggie 😆😆😇🌻🌻🌻
not only do I not give my snake plant light, I am currently only watering it monthly and it’s “fine”
