- I've made videos about low light houseplants before, but there's a few areas that I feel often get ignored when it comes to actually growing HEALTHY plants in low light. In this video I take you through 10 of my favourite plants that are not just surviving, but THRIVING in low light in my home. I turn off the lights and take you round to them in order to show you exactly what low light means and how I've applied it to growing in all areas of my home. I really hope you enjoy it!

A friend of mine has a golden Pothos in her windowless bathroom, the door is always closed so that it‘s pitch black in there. She doesn‘t even dust the leaves, last time she watered the plant was over a month ago and it‘s growing like crazy. No idea how, but this plant is unkillable 😂
My lounge so low on light that my plants are starting a support group - they meet to share tips on how to photosynthesise from streetlights...
You saved me! I just need to get the right type of plants, thank you.
not the support group 😂😂❤
🤣
I know it's not that important, however there are actually plants, that can survive without any light. They are called mycoheterotrophic plants and don't have any chlorophyll because they live in a symbiotic relationship with mushrooms :)
or rather fungi than mushrooms but yea
So what I’m hearing is bathroom cabinet houseplants are the next big thing
@@stormyweather1392🤯
Queen, I just wanna say, looking at the blurred background of your living room, you are living my dream 😂❤ this is what I want my next living room to look like, full of plants 😍 I love it! 👏
I do appreciate that you've actually shown plants that aren't the ones you can find in every random lists online haha, some of those a very unique! And thank you for showing realistic lighting 😊
Lucky bamboo can handle low light like a champ. I've been neglecting mine FAR from my grow light for over 2+ years & it continues to grow tall & wild. I've had many days where it had absolutely no light & still shows new growth😅 I have it in leca so there's ZERO pests & it's such an easy yet fulfilling plant to keep. Just be careful when adding fertilizer since they're pretty prolific growers😂
I was so excited that you mentioned the ficus Alii because I have never heard anyone else mention it. I've had one for many years and it grew so large that I put it in my back yard patio in a pot; I've propagated it and stuck the cuttings in water and had so many root. Unfortunately when we had that big freeze in Feb. 2021 here in Houston, TX the large mother ficus succumed to the freeze because she was so large in the pot, I couldn't bring it inside. I tried covering it but it was such an unusual bitter weather, it couldn't handle it. Thankfully I had many cuttings from her and the young-ins are doing great and thriving.
Oh Claire, this is absolutely wonderful! Thank you for taking the lead in realistically demonstrating the lighting conditions (within your environment) and touching on key points. It's helpful that we take a step back and evaluate our environment to determine if a plant we desire will thrive and survive in our space❤🪴👏👍🫂
Well said, I couldn't agree more in everything you said 😊
The Dean McDowell is beautiful
Your flat looks welcoming, comfy, and cute
Yes part two please! 😊 and also medium plants too 😁
I conquer please and thanks
Why does she even ask? She knows that we're nosey🤣
Please post more like this ! I totally enjoyed this video! I have read and watched so many videos about low light , but I find it confusing and contradictory. Thank you Claire keep up the videos , I love watching your posts.
This is great to share with a friend with a less bright house, thank you.
Congratulations on 90, 000 subscribers! Fantastic!
🇦🇺 Well! Someone had fun videoing and editing this segment 😂. I can't tell you how much I like seeing your 'mess' it brings a sense of natural genuineness. As does your playfulness - reminds me so much of Sandra Bullock and Genna Davis - I find their acting to be very realistic.
The way you demonstrated low light made so much sense to me, I now finally realise that my plants are better off than I think they are! 😁
I never thought I'd like a Ficus but I love the Alli and the umbellata 💕 and I've found the Alli easy to look after. After seeing your aglaonema in a previous segment I knew they'd be perfect in a ceiling hanging planter and they are! Thank you.
Brilliant segment Claire, thank you so much.
I love seeing your beautiful plants! Part 2? 3? 4? Keep your videos coming!
I just wanted to write that your home is so beautiful 💚
One of my favorite videos from you! Informative, entertaining, and I added a couple of them to my own wishlist! Go for a Part Two!
You’re absolutely amazing. I just love all of your content ❤
I just love looking at your room with all of those beautiful plants! I'll be going through your other videos for inspo on how I can Jungle-fy my home too!
This was really useful! Thank you for doing it, and a part two would be lovely. 💚
Hello Claire! I just stumbled across your channel, and I am sooooo delighted I did. I, too, am a houseplant enthusiast, have been growing numerous varieties for over thirty years now, and it is a real pleasure to virtually 'meet' another like-minded soul. Loving the channel, subscribed immediately, and I look forward to learning from your obvious expertise. Lorraine
😮you are like a beautiful fairy !! Loved your topic, presentation and your voice. ❤❤❤ I love everything I see..gorgeous plants.
Part 2!!!!!!!!! Loved every bits of it, esp you trying out each plant's space ;)
Nice! Thank you for this. Yes for part 2 😊 i would also like to see you show some spots with a light meter or phone light meter app, that would be so helpful! 😊
Yes, please. A part two would be great!!
I love your videos... They're very well done... But I now have a list of plants on my "Must buy" list thanks to you and your videos. Lol.
Found this very useful in gloomy Cheshire! A part 2 would be very welcome.
Ficus Alii …have had mine for 40+ years…a great, easy care plant and grows well at light levels at 5 to 6 feet from the window…a plant companion to keep you company as you age❤
this came @ a great time was just looking for low light tolerante plants to fill a space !!
this is the first of your videos I've seen - subbed! I love your collection!! Beautiful all around 🤩
Love this video! So helpful! And it's so fun seeing your apartment 🎉 I'd love to see a part 2 🎉❤
Thank you! As I was watching this I wondered how much does love, care and attention play with the growth on plants in low light? ❤
So helpful!!! We have a lot of windows I. Our house, but they are all covered by a wraparound porch, so this video is such an encouraging lifesaver! Now to channel some self-control and not get these all at once. 😆
I'm a huge fan of Aglaonemas and also Pothos. Golden Pothos along with my curly Spider plants) grow in very low light and I use them in darker areas of my home with no problems. I'd say the Pothos have been the most adaptable to low light in my experience - they just love to grow!
It's true about the Pothos, I got some myself.
But, they become ugly in low light conditions, all leggy, and just overall unattractive.
I've got a fair few sansevieria and like you say they're ready troopers, mine have been in various locations. This winter I treated them to a sensi grow light and they think they're on holiday! Pups appearing on all of them, go on treat yours 🤣
Got one of those ficus alii too, and it's grown from 30cm to over a metre in a year. Underrated!
Your collection is looking great alread but bring on the summer! 🌵🌱🌴
I’m going to continue to thank you for saving me from a gnat infestation. It’s been 2 years now and my plants are still thriving🙌🏽 Your collection is absolutely beautiful.
Share what you know bc I have a gnat issue at the moment. Please and thank you?.
@@Silly7852I’ve had a gnat problem for a while and found out 3 days ago one of my roommates plants had fungal gnats. We figured out which plant it was by getting some little sticky gnat traps on sticks you can stake in the pots, and within a couple hours we found the culprit plant because it was the only one who’s trap had a TON of gnats while the others had maybe one. She took it outside and repotted the plant with fresh soil and cleaned the pot and they’re almost completely gone now 3 days later! We left the other sticky traps in the pots to catch any strays, but overall it was a fairly simple fix in this case.
Thank you for this!😊 part two please.🪴❤
I agree! Aglaonema are so under appreciated. I have 7. I have had to hunt for 6 of them online. For some reason here in Australia 🇦🇺 they are just not sold at garden centres? Diffenbachias but not them. They are so easy! Their leaves never brown thry always look great. Much easier than my 24 different prayer plants and 12 Alocasias!! Aglaonemas are such beautiful undemanding plants.
Claire thanks so much for this video I learned a lot.
I love my zz, and my Calathea orbifolia, although I had to move the latter to a brighter spot. For the darker corners of my flat, I would like a maranta lemon lime, a Calathea makoyana, and an Agleonema orange flame. I do have grow lightbulbs, but haven't found the right fixtures for them yet. I am VERY picky when it comes to interior decoration.
Great vid!
Your plant collection is AMAZING!!! I am so jealous. ❤
Love the dog wink 😂
Hey Claire, I absolutely love your video’s. So informative and cpmplete! I would love it if you would do a video on the setup of your greenhouse cabinets?
This video was so helpful! And makes me feel so much better about the amount of light my plants get 😂
I really enjoy your videos, perfect company while I'm getting through my planty chores 😊 Could you please link your video where you talk about setting up different zones in you your place?
Thank you Claire for the great video 😀🇨🇦
Thank you for this video and showing your beautiful plants. I would reall love a part two of this. 😊 Do you have a luxmeter? It would be so interesting to know in numbers how dark it really is, so we can compare in our homes.
As for the plants: Calatheas are my favorite type of plant. They are so beautiful. I keep mine in my office and when they start to put up their leaves, I now it's time for me to finish work for the day 😊
I have normal household humidity and never had any problems. What I have found though is that they love being shoved into corners where there is little air movement. They grow happiest there for me. Also they tell you when to water again or when something is not right: they don't move their leaves in the evening. When I see one not moving, I check the soil and then water
Part 2 please! Love your videos!
Thank you! Part 2 please. 😊
Perfect. Thank you
Thank you so much for your great advice!!!
I love calathea orbifolia and I was considering buying one. But you definitely discourage me to have one, I mean in a good way.
My apartment is not a good environment for them and I don’t want to kill them. So thanks for sharing your experience! :)
Thank you for information, I was thinking about it nearly🤭
Lovely video! My grandmother gave me the plants that came to the hospital as gifts when I was born. I was 23 when she gave them to me!, I’m 54 now!She was definitely my mentor. I have a very large fycus tree of the variety you showed in this video. It has a single thick trunk and looks like the Truffela trees in the Lorax story. It stands about 6’5” tall and is aptly named Truffela ❤. We have named all the plants and trees. Their names match their make… the fiddle leaf fig tree is named Newton and so on😂.
Fantastic video…great information…LOVE spider man Ross at the end!!
Yes please part 2 .
Lots of plant here that I would love to add to my collection
I have a ton of “low light” plants in south and west facing windows. In the winter here in Minnesota they get about the right light, and in the summer i put almost all of my plants either on my east facing front porch, or my west facing but shaded by trees back porch. See also, why I have seasonal affective disorder, lol/sob.
My ctenanthe setosa grows like a weed! They are brill 😊. Mine in soil highish low light. I agree, ctenanthe and aglonema are so underrated ❤🪴great video thank you Claire
This video was so relaxing at the same time filled with great information! Thank you Claire. There are so many misconceptions about ‘zero light ‘ plant’s,I don’t even watch any of those videos that come up as recommended channels.. 💚🪴🌿🇦🇺 Natalie Australia
Thankyou Claire
On the window sill of my home office (southwest, but with balcony over it and tree in front of it) I collect my Dieffenbachias (4) and my Zamioculcas (3). Also, I placed a Darcaena fragrans there to slow its growth. Same for a Ficus elastica, which I want to keep small without cutting it too much. Moreover, a Codiaeum variegata is growing quite happily there. The depth of my living room is still unpopulated and also the ceilings are free of hanging baskets, so plenty of room for expansion with light/humidity zones, cabinets and moss poles. No plants at all in my windowless bathrooms and the bedroom and the dark hallway. With grow lights, I am planning to extend my collection into the hallway. The majority of my plants are paced in front of the south facing window of my living room and the floor-to-ceiling balcony front. But I am still in the double digits with my collection. The next genera to branch into are Aglaomena, Epipremnum, Peperomia, Marantha and Calathea. For the time being, I shy away from Anthurium, Alocasia, and Philodendron, mainly for space reasons.
love these types of videos! great info! i am a hoya newbie and i killed a krimson princess. so sad!! so far, my kerrii and krimson queen are doing great after a few months though. i just bought a hoya gracillis after watching this video. hopefully this helps me get better with hoyas. fingers crossed!
also, plants that can withstand doggie tail whackage is so helpful to know!!
Ctenanthe lubbersiana is an absolutely gorgeous naturally variegated (yellow) plant that's the absolute easiest prayer plant relative I've ever had. Mine is happily living in 30% humidity (Canada in the winter...) and doesn't seem to care. I suspect that Ctenanthe in general is the easiest of the bunch. (Mine was sold as a Calathea Pilos, and I bought it figuring that I'd murder the pretty little thing, but it's thriving and popping out a leaf every 2-3 weeks. The best sort of surprise!)
Your eyes are so unique and beautiful! Really almond shaped. Just gorgeous!
Wow your calathea leaves are gigantic ❤
Where is this little ladder shelf from that you keep your snake plants on? I could totally use one like that and your setup looks great!!
I’d love a new houseplant tour video. 😊
And I’m subbed !!
Philodendron red Congo (dark leaf) does great very far from a window (15 feet from a north facing window ) with a little grow light!!!
Thx u great video new subbie
I had a skeleton key but I also gave up on it and well I put it outside last summer and it did very good but at the end I let it dye 😅
Your maranta (I call it a prayer plant) might be having problems on account of the soil you’re using. I’ve found that they grow best in either only water, or a really simple soil mix like coco coir and perlite. The long stretch between leaves suggests insufficient light (despite them being a low light plant). I suspect lowering it from the ceiling by a foot will resolve some of those issues.
interesting video thanks. maybe include some measured levels of light? smart phones generally have decent light meters in them
I’m new to being a plant person. When you talk about steady growth, how often should I expect to see growth? I realize that this probably varies by plant, but is there a general rule of thumb?
Hi Claire can you tell me what light you have in your small white greenhouse on your kitchen counter thanks 🇨🇦
Do you have a video on where to find some of these plants to buy? Most places near me only have the bog standard houseplants, which arent very exciting!
Your such a dork 😂keep up the great content, part 2 please and thanks 😊
Hello clare just found your channel brilliant wanting to purchase peace Lilly would you consider the plant as low light Thanks clare
I just got a leopard plant, Farfugium japonicom and it seems to like low lights. Not sure how well it will survive in the lower bookshelf adjacent to a north window but I’ll update it here again.
Hello Claire!
Just curious: Are the leaves in your P. Dean McDowell facing the opposite side of the window naturally or do you rotate it ocasionally? My gloriosum is near a East facing window and all leaves try to face towards the window (and against us people :') )
What about Monstera Deliciosas? I noticed one on your background and it looks like it had low light, how has your experience with those been?
Me personally, I had one just by my window which gre amazingly, but I repotted and moved it away since it did not fit where I had it before. Now I have it at a lower light spot, and am still wondering if it’ll like the spot or not
wonderfull
Do you need to use a humidifier or humidifier tray,!or just spray a mist instead
Any suggestions for an office without windows AND a space where the lights automatically shut off - so it’ll be completely dark over the weekend? So sad I don’t have a window or any plants. Thank you.
Can I get info on the pole you use for the hanging plants?!
I have found that self watering pots work best for those prayer plants and family. Otherwise it is a frequent watering situation... which I don't mind. I think this is why semi-hydro works because it is essentially a form of self watering system. I find these are thirsty-thirsty plants. It's missing a watering session that can prove detrimental.
I noticed that you have a big glass terrain with a plant in it. Can you please tell me what you planted in your glass terrain and soil?
Novice here.
I’m currently looking for low light plants, my new apartment has very little light. I had to give away one of my plants, and my beautiful teacup orchid is wilting and yellowing, I bought grow lights for her and my oregano but I don’t have much space😢
How do you give them a spritz down in the shower? What temp is the water and how long?
I really struggle with this here in Mexico. It seems I either have full, direct sun which is too intense even for tomatoes during the summer months, or my cool rather dark house. I have installed shelves on the East facing windows that get morning sun, but houses here are largely built to protect the interior from the hot sun. I almost have killed a jewel orchid which is so beautiful and supposedly likes very dark forest floor type environments. I switched it to chunky bark and perlite, but just moved it to my patio to get a bit more light. Anyway, more very low light plant suggestions would be welcome, though I think I need to get some grow lights.
Where did you find the White long potter
7:18 Can anyone tell me which is the name for the dark leaves creeper species at the other side of the door next to the snake plants? Thank you very much!
How do you water the higher plants from the ceiling
I notice your hanging pots have holes in the bottom. When you water them, does the water go all over your floor and furniture?
How do you water those plants hanging on the rails?
Totally unrelated but how do you water your hanging plants with all the holes in the pots?
Heyyyy Claire. This video is very helpful. Also I noticed in alot of your videos your barefoot :) is that a preference?
I'm the exact same way anytime I'm around my plants in my plant room and also anytime I repot them I'm alwaysss barefoot too. I find it helps you feel more at one with your plants.
💚
I noticed a climbing plant with leaves shut in a door. What is it and does that bother you?
How old are your plants and size without grow lights?
