Why pruning makes your plant produce side growth:
Plants produce two hormones, one that's at the end of the stem, another that's in the side buds. When you remove the growing tip, this decreases the amount of the 'long' hormone, thus there's more of the 'side shoot' hormone and the side shoots spring out. After a bit, the ends of those side shoots are producing the 'long' hormone thus each of the branches gets longer. So, when you're pruning, you're essentially modifying the hormone balance of the plant to get what you want.
    Now you know.

I have a suggestion for thse who don't use climbing poles. My climbing plants are supported by my large windows, which are south facing in a cloudy climate,. when theyre next to a wall I use 3MCommand Hooks, which stick firmly to the wall and support even heavy branches tied on with plant tape. Later, it can be removed easily without any wall damage.

    • @NN-fz4pd
      @NN-fz4pd 20 дней назад

How are the hook set up with the plants? I imagine if you put the hooks on the wall then the plant would have to be hooked onto each one by going up in a zigzag pattern is that correct?

I absolutely love your Ficus Benjamina!! They are awesome plants and respond well to directional pruning. You can somewhat control how your plant will grow. It's actually called "clip and grow", and it is used in the bonsai community to get plants to grow how they want them. When ever you clip a branch right after a leaf, a new branch will grow in the direction of that last leaf. so you can ideally get your Benjamina to grow a little more round and not so flat by clipping a branch with a leaf pointing the direction you want a branch to grow. I have really gotten into bonsai this summer and I am really loving it. But try it and see if it will round out a bit for you.

One trap to be wary of is the change in humidity that comes with summer going to winter. When you use your indoor heating, that decreases humidity a lot and your soil will dry out faster. While when it becomes summer it will remain wet for longer when you don't heat the house and leave windows open more.

Cracks me up the fungus knat problems. I had a problem with it at the beginning until I stopped overwatering my plants. Sure you get a few here and there. I use a Zevo Plug in Blue light trap and usually makes quick work of them. I find that if you stop being OCD about the plants and forget to water them sometimes, fungus knats disappear.

And need some spritzer bottles - so I can mist what needs misting. Orchids do great by showers. Have a neat shower - orchids growing! :-) I love my ice plant - oh my gosh - I gave my original to two friends ( a brother and sister) they like plants. It just grows and has the little flowers (purple) on it. I can just lay a piece on some good dirt (that is slightly moist and it grows. I started my new ones from the long pieces hanging over the side. I live in a small cottage (really small 8x12) and I want plants - it has a high ceiling (which is covered right now so I can keep it cooler) and a couple 2x4s across the ceiling area to hang plants from - I will have lots of shelves too once I get walls covered. I have several coleus outside - they are doing pretty good. The ones that will tolerate sun. I only have 2 windows on West side. And a door. So will need lots of grow lights. I have an autumn fern - I need to figure how to keep it growing.

I got a gorgeous Polka dot begonia this week!! Wasn't planning to. Found a grossist nursery and went there to see about a little japanese maple for the balcony, they're gorgeous in the fall... ended up buying a car-full of plants 😅 of course. I was like a child in a toy shop.😊 Do you have any begonias and do you have any tips? I put my Dotty on an east facing window sill next to my orchids. Hope they get along 🤞🙃💛😊
Also... what plants do you have in the yard? You haven't shown us anything. I know you're quite high up north but we have a couple of months of night frost here in the Meditteranean as I'm an hour drive from the coast. Some plants have to be moved in and some go dormant and come back in the sping.

I lost my last comment... So here it is again. Many Say there are low light plants.. I was ready to toss because not doing well. But decided to put them into brighter light... As you have said. Results were amazing!
Next... Read a scientific article on large number of plants in enclosed area. Results said no to plants improving air quality. I appreciate any comments you might have.

26°C being considered a heatwave is news to me. Here in Greece, heatwaves reach nearly 40°C, sometimes even exceeding that. 30°C is a normal summer temperature here.

Hahahaha hahahaha quite warm at 26C or 79F? We just finished a week of where with the humidex we easily hit 40C which is 104F
It cooked the plants on my balcony, I lost two, they dried and crisped up. I forgot to water one day 😮
You have two of those orange pots? 🧡 I still can't find one 😢

Regarding the monstera aerial roots, what if the plant has got tens of them all rolled around the vase because plant parent didn't know what do with them? 😅 Can I cut them? All of them? The plant feet aren't climbing up anything and the plant seems to keep well... Thanks Mr Sheffield, always a pleasure watching your vids!

Good day and thank you for all of your wonderful content. May I ask, how do you handle plants that crawl across your wall and shelves. I am concerned that they will attach themselves to my wall and thus might tear away paint if I need to move to a different location at some time. Thank you for your advice and sharing your knowledge!

Need oil is good for soft body insects….spider mites, white fly etc, and some fungus problems. Doesn’t work for Japanese beetles and other crunchy bugs, dish soap works better for that.
