Marvel's Phase 4 has seen a divisive set of movies and TV shows that have drastically expanded the scope of the MCU. But how do all of these various threads connect? Is the MCU just throwing random IP at us? Or is there a real plan behind Phase 4, setting up the Multiverse Saga? We explain.

    #Marvel #Phase 4 #Connections
I want to talk about Phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Specifically, I want to prove to all of you that this phase-which may seem like its made of random projects-is actually telling one cohesive story that is united by single theme. Like the MCU always says, it’s all connected.
So, Phase 4 has been a weird one. It’s the first time Marvel studios has fully incorporated TV shows into their storytelling. Now we’ve previously had shows like Agents of Shield incorporated the movies into their stories, like the brilliant follow up episodes to winter soldier [clip, hail hydra]. But Phase 4 is the first time that any cinematic universe fully incorporated TV shows.
Doug: Well, Ezra Miller’s Flash did show up on the CW.
True, but as part of the multiverse, so that [obi wan, aotc, doesn’t count]. And anyways, we’ll get to the multiverse in a few minutes. First I want to address why people feel like this phase has been aimless.
I started really seeing this complaint after Thor: Love and thunder. Most of Phase 4’s projects up till then told solo, stand-alone stories. For instance, Black Widow, the Eternals, Shang Chi, and What If.
And there were also plenty of stories that dealt with the repercussions of Phase 3, like Wandavision, Hawkeye, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki.
These projects defined the Phase’s first year, 2021. But 2021 ended with a massive multiversal crossover, teaming up Doctor Strange with spider-man, spider-man, and spider-man. So fans are ready for 2022 to feel more connected…they wanted to finally get those sweet-sweet MCU connections we all love.
And instead…we got mostly more standalone stories. Moon Knight, She Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Mutiverse of Madness, Werewolf by Night, The Guardians holiday special, and Thor: Love and Thunder are also all standalone projects that tell a singular story about their main characters.
There was an expectation that thor’s movie would kick us off into high gear. Because he’s an OG avenger in a major motion picture, we thought he was gonna meet Dr. Doom, or something. But that didn’t happen, did it?
    Doug: No, it didn’t.
So, after the intricate setup of the Infinity saga, where every element serves a purpose in the final story, it was hard to see the connective tissue between all of the projects. How does She- Hulk connect to Thor: Love and Thunder? Well we’re going to explain how, but first, I have to say, that we should not be holding phase four up to the same standards as phase 3.
Phase 3 was a culmination of like 20 movies. It earned its crossover and connective tissue. We should really be comparing phase four to phase one, or even phase 2…and those phases were not very well connected, in hindsight.
Marvel studios did not have a plan set in stone when they started out. TonySstark’s cameo at the end of the Incredible Hulk makes no sense [clip]. They recast two main characters. Crossover moments were conceived of, and then cut out, like Hulk breaking loose the ice where Steve Rogers was frozen.
Even Thanos was included as a post credits sene after the fact, because joss whedon wanted to tease him for another movie. [clip, him explainign this, third movie]. Even Selvig being mind controlled by loki at the end of the makes no sense, in hindsight, because loki shows up to control him in the avengers.

There's been a strong through line about grief and loss, as well. Almost every project has seen the characters grappling with some form of loss and the grief associated with it. Which makes sense, as we lost a lot of characters we'd grown to love at the end of Phase 3. We, the audience, needed to move through their loss just as the characters who remain did. Not saying that was the focus, but it has been present.

I believe that will be the difference between casual fans and the more hardcore fans. The casual fans have fallen by the wayside from phase 4. Personally, I feel phase 4 should have been slimmed down because there is way too much content for casual fans to understand moving forward. And that is especially true if they are going to continue the trend of not talking about the events of the shows in the movies where they are relevant. This severely hampered multiverse of madness, for instance.
The boxiness of the stories are just a little too much. Sometimes it worked (moon knight), other times it didn’t (multiverse of madness and black widow), and most of the time it was meh (Thor, Black Panther, eternals, Shang Chi, etc.). And I think that’s where a lot of the trouble for phase 4 lies (lots of meh movies).

It was the first time in a long time that the actual mechanics of the MCU were used as a plot device... This is kind of like revealing how the Elder Wand works in Harry Potter. You have a seemingly insignificant object become the focal point of a prophecy that eventually leads to some exception to the rules of the universe. That moment in WandaVision was monumental.

Generally love your theories but, unfortunately, i find the "identity theme" is kinda weak. When you strip down absolutely any human story, you find a story of identity in that every choice impacts a person's identity. Every choice made solidifies who we are or moves us towards a different identity. Eh.... but with secret wars luming in the distance..... IDK... well it's like saying any story is about growth... it's Luke, of course it is otherwise why yell the story?

As a filmmaker myself, I also saw pretty clearly that phase 1, 2, 3 were just basically act 1, 2, 3 of a fairly long TV series with a lot of characters that just happened to be playing on the big screen.
So phase 4 is bound to be the act 1 of the new "trilogy" of phase, to be sure, the introduction of all the new players of this new arc, with phase 5 being act 2, where shit happens, and phase 6 being act 3, the big clash at the end and its resolution.
And good one for identity being the main theme of this phase. I thought it was more about grief (each and every characters had to mourn a loss, be it of someone or something) but identity makes total sense. Great catch !

Ryan, don’t forget that final episode of Agents of Shield. There are a lot of clues and connections to what is coming with Kang. The whole final season was about the team branching into an entirely different timeline, so they could bring back with them Daisy’s sister that died in the original timeline. All of this was possible because Fitz used the AntMan suit and the quantum tech to pull this off. Fitz hid in the Quantum realm away from the Chronocoms until the team could bring him back in the final episode. This is the same thing that Kang has been doing, hiding in the Quantum realm until his counter part died in the MCU, allowing him to come back and kick off the next big saga.
This same connection could give us a way for the Agents of Shield show to come back into the main MCU.

Marvel should just do away with Phases and simply present a release schedule. Phases are production cycles for business reasons and more inside baseball than anything else, while Sagas are narrative journeys - this is why Marvel introduced the Saga concept. Perhaps we are looking for meaning in a frame where it isn't necessarily found.

Honestly I hope they change very little going forward. The people complaining aren’t right (not saying they are wrong) this time. The only thing that can solve the issues that people have is time. While I agree with your assessment of Phase 4, I also believe Marvel and Disney used it as a sort of experiment. Like you said, it was the first time movies and shows worked hand in hand in the telling of a major story, and Disney wanted to know exactly how to best use the Series format. Some shows worked and some weren't a big hit. How do you introduce a new character, tell a decent story AND keep viewers hooked for a 6,8 or 10 series run? You introduce the Special Presentation. WBN was such a fun and incredibly detailed show that focused on a very specific tale. It worked perfectly as a "short movie" but probably would have lost fans as a series. I believe She hulk would have been better received as a Special Presentation rather than the series we got. With phase 4 done and the reviews in, I think we'll get a better balance of movies, series, and special presentations.

from the very first Iron Man and all the other movies built up before Avengers Infinity Wars were standalone and pretty enjoyable on their own and yet were progressing the story forward. There were hardly bad movies before phase 4 begun and EVERYBODY enjoyed it and they did infact build up so well to the Endgame event. But phase 4 tried to move to fast and pushed way too many things to the audience and they weren't that great titles standalone either, with the exception of Loki, Shang-Chi and even Wereworld by Night and that's just three titles which you can watch over and over without getting bored. All the other titles in phase 4 were super passable or a one time watch at best.

Sometimes I feel like I must be the only person who not just tolerated, but liked all of the stand-alone projects in Phase 4 dealing with their own characters exploring their own lives. Some of those were characters we knew who'd always had to share the screen with other characters, giving us a chance to really get to know them (Hawkeye, Black Widow, Wanda, Falcon, Bucky, and even the characters in Wakanda Forever, etc) and some were brand new characters being introduced the way that a lot of the early phase characters got the chance to be introduced. Those solo movies, detached from an overarching storyline, were why this whole giant MCU thing has worked.
Early on, I realized that a lot of the big cameos and tie-ins the people were expecting weren't going to happen because a lot of them would have upstaged characters who we were supposed to be getting to know in their own stories. They got upstaged anyway by people lying about leaks and the fanboys they feed, but there was probably no stopping that. The level of sheer, steely determination by some fans to shove Dr. Doom and/or Mephisto into literally everything has turned into a running joke for me. I want to see Doom eventually, and of course we will and he will be awesome, but I'm hoping Mephisto's never introduced, because the 'NOT THE BEES' joke gets funnier every time I hear it.
That, and the Devil has been done to death.

There's a reason why the Infinity Saga worked: the audience wants to feel like it's a part of a *Narrative Journey* and the first 10 years of the MCU gave them that. They were having the cinematic experience of watching an incredible story unfold in real time, that's why a cinematic universe works-the audience feels like they are a part of it
Phase 4 didn't do that. Nothing seemed to connect to anything else, every character was trying to be the comic relief, and there didn't feel like there was a plot or even a direction the franchise was heading towards -the abundance of shows were basically to flesh out the Disney+ library, nothing more. Fans aren't stupid and they see right through that 🎯
