Should be SECRET INVASION vs ANY SEASON OF AGENTS OF SHIELD. They literally did the Secret Invasion storyline every year for the first four seasons. Who is secretly Hydra? Who is secretly with the "Real SHIELD"? Who is secretly mind-controlled by Hive? Who is secretly an LMD? Every time it was better than Secret Invasion.

The Winter Soldier worked because it focused on an institution being corrupt from within .
Secret Invasion wanted to go broader than that but unlike the comics didn’t really make any twists

Winter Soldier: "Don't trust unaccountable agencies because they're easily corrupted and invaded by Nazis who torture and murder people."
Secret Invasion: "Thank God for all the unaccountable agencies who torture and murder people or immigrant invaders would wipe us out!"
      That's the main difference. 🤭

The sadness of Steve and Bucky is that they were both looking out for each other the whole time, but neither got to save their friend.
Bucky finally got his mind back, and his best friend already moved on. Just like Steve moved on from Bucky when he realized that everyone he knew is dead. Culminates at the scene with Peggy.
Both of these heroes wanted to save their best friend, and they did, but they never got to see it.
    Such a good movie

How Secret Invasion could be made better.
    1. Set it after the Marvels. The influx of Skrull refugees to earth would cause tensions to rise as Nick and Co struggle to keep on top of things.
    2. The Skrulls aren’t the ones carrying out the secret invasion, the Kree are. After the events of Captain Marvel they knew they could simple invade Earth when it had such a powerful champion so plan to do it covertly. With the blip being when they made their move. They use Shield technology to change their appearance, which they in tern use to frame the Skrulls. Ideally this is not revealed until the end.
3 Rhodey is a Skrull, but Fury knows so it’s a red herring, and it’s not sure if Rhodey is a Kree impersonator, a Skrull or the real Rhodey.

    • @MrBazBake

1 make it an avengers movie

I think Winter Soldier is a great movie but I think it impacted, me at least, so much because, like you mentioned, AOS was airing at the time and it was following the along side the movies brilliantly, the big change the movie made effected the TV show there and then and changed everything and it was magical!
Side note, the "Piss Off Ghost!" scene from Korg is the single greatest moment in the MCU and it cracks me up every single time wiythout fail lmao!!

This is a great video. Also, Agents of SHIELD is a criminally underrated show. The crossover with Winter Soldier is one of the best tie ins I've ever seen. It has the same madness and scramble where you don't know who to trust, but it's even deeper and scarier because everyone in the show is a SHIELD agent. Anyone could've been Hydra. I still recommend people watch AoS if they haven't. And I'm still hoping they bring Inhumans and Quake into the MCU.

Ironically people keep on pointing out that Secret Invasion was filmed during the 'thing that partially closed the world', but Disney fully controlled the release date. They could have pushed it back and redone some of it, or in most cases reshoot the majority of it. Winter Soldier had the right focus, tight central group while the 'world falls apart'. Secret Invasion kept expanding the central group while the 'world falls apart'. In the end you have too many characters to feel fully emotionally invested in, climaxing with two underdeveloped characters with the same powers fighting each other.

Winter Soldier is still the peak for me in storytelling inside the Marvel universe. It may not have Infinity War or End Game stakes, but man there is not a wasted moment in the entire film. It is consistently the one I go back to and re-watch. I just rewatched it this weekend so I think algorithm is following me. It has Robert freaking Redford doing everything he can to bring even more gravitas to this film. It is a fantastic standalone film and is even more awesome if you know the Marvel universe around it.

Apart from like Loki, Wanda-Vision, MoM, NWH, all of phase 4 should have been strictly dedicated to deepening the after-effects of the blip and the whole saga of who is a skrull/who can we trust, all of it caped off by a team-up movie like Civil War (if not an avengers movie) at the end of phase 4. That would have set up a perfect base for the all the niche and broader stories at surface level while some of the familiar characters and more newer characters were worked into multiversal and cosmic stories. Not to mention would have given some new and some familiar characters crossing paths with each other, something phase 4 sorely lacked.

And poor Maria Hill deserved SO much better than that. Was hoping to see her as the next Fury. Or the Vice President. Not dead 5 freaking minutes after we get to see the REAL her again (rather than the skrull version we last saw in Spiderman FFH). Sigh.

In defense of Secret Invasion, filming was done during the pandemic, which undoubtedly hindered it.
But there is definitely more problems with power creep now that G’iah has so much power. It was starting to be an issue as early as Doctor Strange and Age of Ultron. But lately, with Shang-Chi, Captain Marvel, the Celestials, G’iah, and some characters from What If, there’s more and more of this sort of superhero arms race. This isn’t to bash on those characters, no, but I do worry that the power creep is gonna cheapen some past and future Marvel productions.

Winter Soldier vs. Secret Invasion is like Chuck Norris vs. a toddler. It should’ve been the next Avengers where Gravik (not G’iah) succeeded in getting everyone’s powers and everyone came together to battle. He kills Fury after a legit heart felt scene, then Captain Marvel to show how strong he is, and Hulk and Thor are the only ones strong enough to defeat him. Or Ant Man can fly up his nose and go back to normal size (solution for every big bad).

Secret Invasion was worse than bad: it was a huge letdown! The cast alone had me incredibly excited! Plus, even though we’ve had Sam Jackson’s Nick Fury since the first Iron Man film, this was the first time he’s been the main character of the story. That alone made me want to watch. As much as I hate using the Multiverse as a plot device to kill characters that we love, if Feige came out and said “Secret Invasion didn’t really happen. It took place in an alternate and far dumber reality.” I would be happy.

I was so incredibly hyped for Secret Invasion. I love the spy stuff. I was hoping for something like what they did in Agents of Shield but even darker and more not being able to trust who is who. the first episode was so promising, but with each new one, it torn itself more and more down. Had it ben done right, Secret Invasion could have easily been my favorite thing from Marvel. Sadly, it ranks just over Inhumans.
Also, I hope Ryan is ok. Colton is doing a great job, nothing against him. I just assume something is up and hope that he and his family are doing well.

Poor Secret Invasion had so many reshoots and lower budget. I enjoyed it but I didn't have the reservations about the show until later
Winter Solider was one of the best movies I'd seen in a long time. The action story, stakes and plot twists were amazing. I literally went from the movie theater to the gym to workout lol

In secret invasion, the thing people get wrong about when t is that the emotional core is between Nick and his wife. Their relationship should’ve been focal It almost didn’t matter which skrull was a former agent or a current companion, his feelings towards his wife were the thing driving him to NOT go scorched earth after Talos dies.

They had the perfect spies and they barely did spy shit with them
Also, like Batman, Fury should have had contingency plans against any superbeing.
Gravik should have been a one-time freak that cannot be replicated. He gets access to multiple superpowers but don't know how to use them efficiently.
That would have made for an epic human v god battle between him and Fury in the finale.

Secret Invasion should have been an entire phase of the MCU not a short 6 episode series. It needs time to develop and build tension not just with the audience but also between the characters themselves. Just imagine an entire phase where both heroes and side-characters are replaced with Skrulls, but neither the audience or characters fully know it until the end of the last movie of the phase before the Avengers Team-up movie which plays out as a proper Secret Invasion story of heroes fighting each other not know who is real.
