Marvel's Secret Invasion continues the recent phase of the MCU on Disney+. And it doesn't do so very well, at least not in the pilot episode... because it fails to convince the viewer to come back for more, which is essential in TV. And since some of you told me about this show after my video on The Marvels, I'll return the favor by taking some lessons from the TV side. We both win. You get to see me say Marvel is bad and I get to talk about TV lessons!

Godzilla minus one review please
I have a rule in that you should give a tv show 4 episodes before deciding to stop watching it since a tv show needs time to introduce all of the major characters, get the story going, & allow enough time to raise the stakes for action & drama to emerge.

The fact that Skrolls didn’t take the form of anyone who was blipped is nothing short of a goddamn miracle.

Just re-watched "Captain America - The Winter Soldier" the other night with my wife; stunning to see just how far Marvel has fallen since "Infinity War...."
Not only it is (in my opinion) the best Marvel film ever, but also a damned good movie. To see their fall is painful.
Guardians of the Galaxy jokey tone ruined the MCU because of it's success every movie had to be jokey.
@@Dru2037Not even remotely true. Also I thought Deadpool made everything jokey
@@Dru2037 What made GotG work was that yes, there was quipping, but it wasn't being scrawled over every moment of the film. When it came to moments like the death of Quill's mother, Rocket hinting at having been enslaved and painfully altered, or Groot's sacrifice, nobody was looking to the camera and saying "Well, THAT just happened!". It's a quite serious story that happens to have a couple of characters in it who use humour, either as a conscious choice to shy away from their own emotional pain or because their mindset is quite alien compared to the others. And it knows how to use the humour to complement serious moments (such as the "WE are Groot" line--because we're used to the humour of Groot replying to everything in the same way, it hits harder when he phrases it like that), rather than having it fight against those moments.
The problem comes when that sort of humour is jammed into every bit of a story, even when it means the story is constantly sabotaging what should be its own emotionally resonant and serious moments (Thor: L+T). Then it just comes across as the film being insincere and embarrassed about the story it's trying to tell.
End game was the peak for me.
They screwed up Planet Hulk, Gorr storyline and now freaking Secret Invasion? What the HELL is going on at Marvel Studios bro? Why Feige is putting such low effort in these projects? Was he not supposed to be a fan of comic books?
Cause they are hiring cheap labor for their recent works. Just take a look at the experience the directors of The Eternals and The Marvels had, both of those movies were their first big budget movies, in fact the Director of The Marvels never worked in a movie before.
I'm convinced Kevin Feige was only interested in the Thanos arc. After that he was done, but he just left the MCU money printer plugged in anyway.
@@LordofSadFacThat is a problem of Disney in general, the director of the next main Star Wars film, basically Episode IX, starring everyone's favorite character Rey (sarcasm) is an activist who has only ever made documentaries about women in Pakistan
Kang dynasty
To be fair even phase 1 completely ruined the Mandarin and the ten rings. At least it tended to only be one thing ruined per phase and not the phase as a whole. So it's no like they never messed up any storylines before Phase 4. However now it just seems one after the other with no reprieve.
you also feel bad for Maria Hill, imagine coming back from the snap/blip to only later die from a gun shot wound
Agreed. I saw recently that at one point they intended to have her be closer to her comic counterpart by making her more central to the Sokovia Accords and Civil War storyline but they opted for making her a nothing. Smh
it made me so mad, like girlie has literally survived SO MUCH and THAT'S how she dies?! 😭😭😭 i'm probably not the only one but i don't consider that- or this show- canon LOL
For me, *it wasn't that Maria Hill died, but that she died **_in THAT PITIFUL SHOW_** of all places.* Maria was an inspirational and completely bad ass character and I adored her in all the movies. If they were going to kill her off, it needed to be in a spectacular death during a movie; even in *The Marvels* would be better than that crappy Secret Invasion. I am _still_ mad at them for wasting my time with that drivel.
@@sonicsilliesI don’t consider anything after “Spider-Man Far From Home canon.”

Marvel is sitting on a goddamned goldmine, using their IP in interesting ways. Like how Winter Soldier was also a spy thriller, or how Dr. Strange 2 was (at times) a light horror film. But no, they have to be as formulaic and by-the-numbers as possible.
The MCU died with Tony Stark, and that's a fact.
"There is no way im watching a whole season of this". Amen
I love how Filmento didn't even bother watching the rest of the show after episode one. Believe me buddy, it only gets worse from there.
I begged my wife not to drag us through the whole show but she didn't want to be behind on the Marvel cinematic universe. If there's something in it related to the Marvels, the show's explanation must have been too boring to remember. Luckily we got interrupted halfway through that movie, so I've been spared about an hour of awful.
FACTS!
I also think that a major issue with the script was how it handled a person who is known for his contingencies in Nick Fury. Somehow, he just lets his Right-Hand get murdered, despite him training her to be self-sufficient. Even in The Winter Soldier, he had more backup plans than that, drugging himself to, "death," and reviving later.
this show simply does not look like it cost a million per minute

Secret Invasion should’ve been an Avengers film.
Shit, it could’ve been stretched out into an entire Phase. Just look at what EMH did with the event.
And Thor Ragnarok should've been World War Hulk and a Hulk solo trilogy but Marvel doesn't give a fuck

The MCU television formula can be described thusly:
- First episode, something happens
- Subsequent episodes, nothing really happens
- Last episode, conflict is resolved in a big stupid fight scene
It's like they took a movie script and lengthened it out without actually adding anything of substance. All you need really are the first and last episodes, and that's two hours of runtime right there.
Lots of things happened in _WandaVision_ (assuming one wasn't looking at their phone while watching).
@@TheLewistownTrainspotter8102 Wanda vision had a great first 8 episodes which felt unique and different, but then the last episode just descended into the same tired final battle from every other MCU show/movie where you just have two people with the same powers shooting at each other. In a way, that's more disappointing since the rest of the show was so good, compared to Something like Secret Invasion which was terrible from episode 1 so the finale was just on par with the rest of the show
Same with Star Wars. Obi-Wan, Ahsoka, and Mandalorian Season 3 feel like they only have content for 4 episodes, but were required to make 10 by Disney+.

I love how Nick explains that this is all a personal matter with him, hence why he never called the Avengers or Carol Danvers... but he doesn't even bother to confront Gravik himself. Instead he lets G'iah pose as him so she too can become a Super Skrull thing with all the Avengers powers, including Danvers', meaning Nick literally could've just contacted Carol.
It bothers me so much because with Carol contacted to fight Gravik, G'iah could've assisted Fury to save the President and let him know there's good Skrulls willing to help, instead of just... Fury shooting fake Rhodey and leaving, letting the President grow a paranoia and screw the Skrulls over more than ever.
@kidkatanatv Been asking the same question for years what was the age
I feel like they really wasted the whole shapeshifting alien thing on a mundane terrorist plot.
Like, Nimona is a shapeshifter and uses her powers way better. Whenever she turns into another person, it is always either an extravagant distraction or used to disguise as someone important to infiltrate the villain’s base.
"you didn't get the movie because you didn't watch the morbillion of other mediocre shows on Disney+ duuuh"
...yeaaah no thank you.
The Marvels really only raises more issues with Secret Invasion anyways since Secret Invasion is based on the idea all skrulls are on earth and skrulls don't have an own planet. The Marvel's shows at least some of them living on their own planet.
Secret Invasion would’ve been great as a film if it included some higher stakes and bigger players of the marvel universe. This was completely nerfed and looked like they couldn’t or didn’t want to invest what the idea really needed to be fully realized. Such a missed opportunity. 🤷♂️
And all they did is making big reveal that rhodes probably already died and replaced by alien
Oh yeah, thanks for retconning lot of stuff to achieve nothing!
I think that part is just them being put in a position where they couldn't really do that.
I mean, MCU characters don't really interact with each other anymore. She-Hulk doesn't interact with Dr. Strange or Captain Marvel, Wanda was able to do her thing without any Avenger getting involved, and no Avenger got involved with the Zemo stuff. Not even getting into how we're probably never seeing Shang-Chi or Echo again.
What could they have done that would have meant anything? Were they going to reveal that Kate Bishop or Hawkeye was a Skrull? Well, no, because Kate isn't important enough to matter to Nick Fury, and Jeremy Renner had his accident and couldn't film scenes.
Now, if it were me, I would have revealed that at the end of Shang-Chi, that wasn't Wong that took them away, it was a Skrull that took Shang-Chi away in order to steal the rings for nefarious purposes. I think that would have been cooler and easier to pull off.
And NO diverse female hero! This woke crap needs to end!
One thing that comes to mind is Mr. Robot. That show got me on a single scene. Just the intro hooked me to watch the whole show. Then the first episode was released and I knew it was going to be something special.
I lost interest when it was obvious they were copying the plot of a David Fincher movie. Was the whole series good?
@@sjbrooksy45 The series is actually a counter point to Fight Club's simplistic ideas. Namely, Tyler Durden's plan to erase debt. Also, the show, even in season 1, is a WHOLE lot more than just the main hacking plot.

It is, without a doubt, the best show of the last decade. And I am counting Breaking Bad.

Doctor Who did the shapeshifter suspense perfectly and explored the philosophical questions with the 'The Rebel Flesh' two part episode. They managed to do it justice in just two episodes. They even kind of pulled it off with last year's the Wild Blue Yonder when the show's writing was at its worse. It takes a special talent for the audience not to care who is an evil shapeshifter and who isn't. It's like making a Mexican stand off boring.

Its sad really, as when It was announced, I realized it was the perfect way to recanonize Agents of shield with the secret Kree/Skrull war between Coulson's SHIELD and Gravik's skrull insurgents. You could have a lovely moment between Coulson and Nick, where Coulson tears him down about how his team is always needing to clean up fury's mess. He never asked to be brought back and give the reins to the organization, but he took it despite later realizing Fury was just dumping all his problems onto him.

I always appreciate the ads and the end of the video, it definitely flows better.
The conversations about Secret Invasion remind me of how much better Star Trek: Deep Space Nine handled shapeshifters. In a war, just 3 of their spies were able to panic and weaken an entire planet because they actually used their ability intelligently.
They always say in fiction "show, don't tell." But what they don't say is, "Emote, don't explain." And above all else, "always give your audience a reason to keep continuing the story." Too bad no one told the Secret Invasion writers any of these tips.
I gotta say, that intro was Pure *GENIUS* 😅😅

If you don't like secret invasion, don't even think about eco, PLEASE!!
Agent Hill said it all at the beginning of the series to homeboy Fury : “There’s no shame in walking away”.
Always disturbed me how open this show was about its villains being refugees..
The idea of refugees being villains will come into play in real life after DJT returns to the White House. It's called predictive programming.
Just so I don't have to bore you with multiple, long comments, I will condense it down for you.
Illegal immigrants/refugees are being used to put a drain on the taxpayers and to dilute the job market so there are more job seekers than available jobs. (Cloward Piven tactics)
I'm sure you know the term "woke", right? It's another way of saying Marxist ideologies.
When DJT returns to the White House, he will remove the "woke" (Progressive Liberals) from society, along with the people they brought into the country as a means of gaining political power through promising entitlements and benefits. (Housing, food, money, preferential treatment in job placement based on their minority/refugee status.)
Both progressive Liberals and refugees will be labeled as subverters, treasonous and intent on destroying the US from within, and be dealt with as traitors.
We are essentially going to see a mix of McCarthy era, Nazi Germany and Stalinism. Unless you are a citizen loyal to the US and its leader, you will be imprisoned, starved, deported, put in a labor camp or outright killed.
I love the way you sneak your sponsors in to the video it's hilarious
An example of Marvel trying to have a cake and eat it too. Let's take the evil shape-shifting aliens and surprise, they're actually chill and friendly! But wait, we still want to do the secret invasion with evil shape-shifting aliens too, and make it a spy thiller! Where could we go wrong?
Btw, best version of the Secret Invasion in a Marvel tv show is in the Marvel's Avengers cartoon, where they kept them evil, they became superpowered, and some of our favorite heroes were actually some of those super skrall! Very tense back then, but you can't create the same tension after making them funny British alien pansies after their first appearance.
I think the most exciting thing about all this is finding out that the "Yippie" from Lethal Company is from some random video of a German child being happy

She hulk predicted what this show would be about.
This could only be a disaster when they made the skrulls refugee victims instead of an invading army from a powerful race
That’s what the gross W does.
The innate problem with the show is that it can’t achieve the same scope as the comic story arc its based on, on the comics is revealed major characters and superheroes are skrulls and the budget for the show would never allow for the kinds of characters and effects required to bring the original story to life so instead they shrink the scope down significantly and have a bunch of characters we don’t know or care about be skrulls in disguise (who cares)
One of the main issues with the MCU - and probably Marvel as a whole - is that they always end up in this situation where they want you to care about characters and events based on previous situations you may not be aware of. The MCU took off because it constantly introduced new bespoke plots and characters and they eventually wove together to culminate in something meaningful. Now they're trying to string old characters with new plot threads tied to already finished stories and it's stretched in too many different directions.
The Skrull storyline should have been the big bad in Phase 4 and ended in an Avengers movie. That is a big reason why Marvel is struggling in every other Phase there was always a Avengers movie to end it. Now it will be a decade at least from Endgame until the new one.
I feel like the fundamental problem with this show (and many other media produced by the same kind of people) is that "write what you know" isn't just a suggestion, it's the literary equivalent of a natural law. And these people don't know real conflict. They've been kowtowed and catered to every step of the way all their lives. That's why everything they make is so impossibly boring. They don't even have the most basic grasp of struggle.
Maybe the real aliens are the friends that we made along the way :)
I know it likely won't happen, but imagine Filmento covering Arcane. It's does literally everything the current Marvel could ever dream about doing.
I had no idea that this was a show. I always thought it was a movie.
I live in Halifax, England and I remember how excited everyone was that Marvel was filming at one of our most recognisable buildings, the Piece Hall. Secret Invasion was hyped up the entire year because of the Russian crowd bombing scene, and the disappointment when it was a 1 minute scene in a bad show was universal
This was doomed years before it even started. Your storyline is absolutely borked on multiple levels when your planet nuking baddies are already established as "poor helpless refugee victims."
Rhody is an alien and never knew Stark died. This show is pure insult to audience
Filmento make a video about the animation Blue Eye Samurai, it's a masterpiece.
using the "alien that shapeshifts into humans" has *never* worked because it takes away any accountability, the entire series becomes as reliable as a continuous dream sequence when everything that happens probably didn't happen to the real character anyway. It always feels so cheap in so many ways.
Secret Invasion's biggest flaw is that it hated the lead actor as there are often scenes just put in to insult his age, skill and that all of the promotions was from the aliens instead of being a professional.
Like they also tried using the fact that he couldn't match up much against the skrull in terms of ability and its like obviously? they are established to have higher strength and durability so its like although its trying to make a point that Nick is past his prime they are showing it with villains that only superheroes would be able to fight normally.
That moment when the average game of Among Us has more tension and intrigue than a multimillion dollar Marvel production.
Please filmento, start making videos about Tv Shows too, pretty please?
The funniest thing is - even a "Large Black Man in Moscow" is not out of the ordinary out here
Honestly, Secret Invasion wasn't that bad for me. I probably think so, because I watched The Witcher S3 the day before and it was worse.
“This gaping head wound doesn’t feel as bad as the severe concussion I got last week! All good!”
Not a high bar 😅
You're such a masochist 😂
I dropped out of Witcher early S2, and if by comparison this isn't that bad....I made a good choice
@@susanritchie2394I didn't even bother to watch any of the seasons because I knew it was always headed down this road.
Best transition into an ad ever 😂
You missed an opportunity to opening the video with an edit of Emilia Clarke in the bar where Spongebob was at in MuscleBob BuffPants, but she's struggling to pull the drink off her hand and her Drax arms keep growing.
Seriously, it's no question that Spongebob's fake muscles look more real than hers....
Can't wait for Filmento to fully analyze the whole One Piece series
