I had a thought back when this finale first aired: since the world that She-Hulk breaks into is not in fact our actual world, because our actual world doesn't actually have a robot named KEVIN writing the MCU but instead the actual Marvel Studios team including Kevin Feige who is presumably not a robot disguised as a human, then Jen doesn't just live inside of a show, she lives in a show *within a show*, and possibly the world in which her show exists, the world that has a robot writing Marvel movies, *is the MCU of our universe*. So to us, everything in the MCU is fiction; and to people in that fiction, the show She-Hulk is itself fiction, but fiction that somehow broke containment and became real in a way that can't actually happen in our world, but did fictionally happen in the MCU.

To piggyback off of this, I think the most interesting way to have Jen show up somewhere else is *as a TV show*, maybe even a show in Daredevil's world where he's still in the red suit. Not have her break out of that show... yet... but establish that She-Hulk is fictional and does not exist, so if and when they do use her it's weird for everyone involved.

    • @Pfhorrest

@@SanguineRoku Maybe in the real MCU, Bruce doesn't have a cousin, and is aware of and consents to this show about a fictional cousin of his in lieu of a show about him that people wanted to make... and then his fictional cousin breaks the fourth wall somehow and becomes real. Maybe real Bruce hasn't gone back to Sakar and retrieved a son... yet, but the fact that the show threw that twist in makes him wonder what he qua Hulk got up to during those three lost years, and then he really does go and it turns out he does have a son...

I have a fan theory that I want to throw out there that I've been thinking about for a minute... Breaking the fourth wall is a superpower. Wade Wilson wasn't able to do that until he became Deadpool, You notice when Deadpool breaks the fourth wall nobody pays attention to him or they think he's crazy and ignores it... And I think that the Hulk has always been able to break the fourth wall but he doesn't because he tries to suppress symptoms of the Hulk.
If you notice when Bruce was teaching Jen how to be a Hulk when she broke the fourth wall she was surprised he turned to her like oh you can do THAT thing too... If you notice at the end of the Hulk movie in 2008 Edward Norton broke the fourth wall at the end of the movie.

If in universe Jen’s direct address to the audience is just her line of thought like other shows, the finale rewrite could be her anxieties about what will happen - bad Blonsky, powered Todd, Bruce saves the day - but by confronting the truth and taking responsibility for her own story she finds Blonsky’s misunderstood, Todd’s plan failed, and DD shows up but ultimately for moral support. This would be pretty similar to how the idea of musical numbers is explored on Crazy Ex Girlfriend as both a fun way to engage the audience and a narrative device to reveal character’s inner thoughts and feelings.

Also, if Luke Skywalker spent two movies talking to the camera, I wouldn't be bothered if he pulled a Jen in Empire Strikes Back.
      It'd be funny.
The idea that a show with 700,000 viewers ruined a franchise that regularly sells 40,000,000 tickets per movie is missing the forest for the trees in most of these debates. People tend to think the thing they don't like ruined it all while ignoring most people aren't even aware of the thing they didn't like.
When the movies do poorly it's because of the movies. When the shows do poorly it's because of the shows and the movies.

First: K.E.V.I.N. told Jen she wouldn’t be able to access his algorithm again. So, this was a one time deal for this particular story.
Second: Comic books get retconned and changed all the time. It could be a new writer taking over or a multiversal event that changes the timeline to fit the story. Happens all the time.
Expecting the MCU (based on comic books) to remain pristine and unchanged is a bit of a reach. Especially when the MCU has changed storylines and characters from the source material to fit the story they were trying to tell. Jen got a redo because she got over on the overarching AI that tells all of these connected stories. She won’t do it again because she can’t. She can still break the 4th wall but she can’t access K.E.V.I.N.

It's all OK. The Omniverse that we see at the end of Loki Season 1 shows that the multiverse being held together by Loki is not everything, it is just where most of our MCU characters live. Talking to camera isn't a quirk of the storytelling, it is a power the character has to interact beyond their own multiverse. It doesn't break anything, it's just new layers. The fact that the writers create new life by deciding on it, doesn't mean it is not life. Also doesn't mean that the writers have all the power, as She-Hulk and others can break out and change things, so could sever the link.

I can agree people suffer due to prejudices, racism, and sexism but ypu don't need to beat me over the head with it every episode.
No one who is already racist or sexist are dedicated to watching these shows anyways, so why do the people watching it need to be lectured about it every episode? Especially in Jens life as pretty successful lawyer, I'm supposed to weep for HER?

The ending was a cop out. In my head, I would have expected a big fight between Jen and Todd, but instead we cut to a courtroom where Jen is annihilating Todd using the law, maybe using smart use of copyright law on hulk blood or something like that. She-hulk was always more brains than brawn so why not use that for the ending? Also, I would like to think that that is not actually Skarr that Prof. Hulk found, but is actually Hulkling, so we can get a jump on that young Avengers romance with Wiccan.

  • @BradyBigfooter
    @BradyBigfooter 5 месяцев назад +3

My head canon has always been that it was all just a trick played on Jenn by Kang and/or the TVA. In order to keep themselves hidden from her ability to break the fourth wall, they created an artificial construct of a screenwriter's reality so Jenn wouldn't be able to find them. In changing the events of the finale, K.E.V.I.N. basically just pruned the old ending in favor of a new one, and even though Jenn wanted to ditch the Hulk storyline, he still showed up at the end in accordance with what K.E.V.I.N. wanted. None of it was real. It was merely an illusion to satisfy what Jenn believes to be true and to keep her from digging deeper. Besides, K.E.V.I.N. totally looks like something O.B. would build, and the videos on the screens are just like the time projection technology we saw in the first episode of Loki. Doug gets it. Granted, it is a lazy ending that makes much of the show feel like wasted time.

I'm ok with the series, the ending was awkward, idc about Skarr (but it does look awful lmao), Tatiana was amazing in her role, Bruce was awkwardly there.

Now I will agree thst this wasn't the most transformative pice of television ever but it was a really good introduction to early she hulk comics andi think the acting was fun. Second - I agree with the majority of your review of the show. Very well articulated and fair.
Third - I only disagree that She-Hulk breaking the fourth wall also breaks the MCU. As you point out, they do it in an even more extreme way in the comics… and it’s fine. They simply ignore the fourth wall breaking outside of She-Hulk’s own book. They can do that in the MCU too.
We have to assume that everything that got wrapped up at the very end also had an appropriate “in story” explanation that we just didn’t see. Call the fourth wall stuff a dream or inner monologue, that’s the story we followed at the end.

Movie goers and TV watchers are different than comic book readers.
Generally in comics there is so much going on that many only pay attention to one at a time. They read Spider-man way more than anything else like X-men for example. A world changing event can happen amoung ALL the comics but for example Spider-man faces his own issue and then maybe joins a bigger fight, but even that fight may be in another comic like Secret wars, not spider-man comics.
I think people more easily separate and take each character as it's own thing in the comics whereas in the MCU it IS more about the overall world story.
If you watched it just for Thor then you are only seeing a fraction of the MCU and you cannot exactly make a whole fanbase on JUST Thor and not the MCU.
The She Hulk show was new, she wasnt part of any greater narrative yet but as this video says she already has universe breaking powers that don't come off well as a joke in such a small kinda side story so far.
She will be part of the greater MCU eventually and if she is doing more than making just quips or jokes to the audience then why cant she just hop into Disney+ again and say "hey this Kang thing isnt working right? So let's jjst say Dr Doom is here instead" it couod be a funny joke but considering she actually changed reality already MCU fans will say "why not again?" Whereas comic fans have already LOOONG learned that it is just a joke and no one saw this shit while reading the 500th X-men comic so it gets lost in the zaniness, not so much in the limited spotlight of the MCU

"I like Megan thee stallion cause I have her on camera" is a fucking weird argument.

I don't think you were too rough on the finale, but I do think you were too generous on the overall show...

@@johnwerner69 In my opinion, ryan overestimates the qualities of the show, that was poorly conceived from the start in all fronts. The problem isn't make fun of it in the finale and break canon to "fix" the plot, is release all the previous episodes as they were from the start... The only good thing in She Hulk, to me, is Tatiana Maslany, who can shine even with the bad material she was given to work with.

I actually liked she hulk. Never expected many huge tie ins. I felt like it was the most creative show since wandavision in the mcu. I would encourage them to take more risks like that

Me too. I liked that it broke the typical formula and showed what it was and wasn’t doing at the end. I’d watch a season 2.

I thought it was terrible but agree, i would rather them take a swing and miss than stick to super formulaic , identical tones of most movies and shows.

But, She was allowed to change her finale only one time. She can't do it again, but She knows that she leaves in MCU, some kind of origin of her being "The character that knows the leaves in an movie"

Hey, that shirt that Michael’s wearing in his monologue, I have that one too. Bought it at target for 899 and then I walked over to the art section and bought some non-washable markers and let my kids color in all the characters on it you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a hot pink wolverine

What hurt me most is the current run in the comics has been really good, at a time most comics are not doing all that well. It is a little goofy and lighthearted, but it works for the character, in a way the show never did. It's like they tried to be "fun" with the 4th wall breaking and such, but it just came off as too much and really forced. And I think they re-wrote the ending, when they found out they were not going to be picked up for another season, so the left with both middle fingers in the air, instead of going out huge, in a way that might make them reconsider a season 2.

He's off-base about game of thrones. It wasn't a studio swerve. Arya was always going to kill the Night King because that was in GRRM's notes to the show runners from the beginning. It only felt like a swerve because they had no real good ideas of how to actually make that plot point feel earned. They only had a destination, no road map to get there.
