The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had many projects in Phase 4 that haven't exactly resonated with fans due to their dip in quality. Honestly, the problem that I have with phase four is that it's lazy. The MCU has gotten too complacent and relying on cameos, nostalgia, and hype to keep it going, they don't have to put in effort anymore and they quit trying. Werewolf by Night stood out so much because Michael Giacchino isn't lazy. He directed the special and did the score.

Thank you for pointing out that comparing Jen to Bruce is a terrible idea. May be men do not experience as must sexism as women, but it does not mean they do not experience other things happening in their life. Bruce was never cat called but he was hunted like a monster, abused, lost his mother and teammates, and was suicidal. At least Jen never had to feel like that. Jen does not know what Bruce goes through and neither does he. I wish they could have made Jen sympatric. Those are just my thoughts
Hopefully the other future MCU projects would help fix her character. Captain Marvel is on her way to being fixed in The Marvels, I think.

It would've been fine if she said she's good at controlling her anger because she does it all the time. But no they had to have her say she does it infinitely more than Bruce. That one line ruined it.
His background is pretty tragic. I haven’t watched SH because it looks so D-Tier, but I’m assuming they want you to feel really bad for her because she’s a woman in the workplace.
Men do experience sexism and sexual harassment who's to say that Bruce was never cat called men or cat called everyday all over the world maybe not to the extreme as women but it happens all the time we experience sexism and a different way that women experience sexism and the sexism that we experience is largely and generally accepted as normal and okay but we are treated differently talk two differently and expected different things often more things of us because we are men that is by its definition sexism
The biggest problem I had with the fourth wall breaks was that they seemed to be used for the sole purpose of explaining what was happening to the audience. This really hurt the show because the writers made characters so weak, bland, and one dimensional, that the messages they were trying to display would have been invisible unless it was literally spelled out for the audience. The show expected the audience to forget its characters and miss undertones because they were so poorly written in the first place, that the only way they could make sure people understood what was happening was to exposition dump directly to the audience. The fourth wall breaks were never funny, and stifled all creativity that could have gone into the show.

I didn't make to the finale...I wanted to see Daredevil but couldn't even make it that far....
I remember in primary school creative writing classes, our teachers banned the “and then I woke up, it was all a dream” ending. Because it’s a lazy cop out for when we wrote ourselves so to a corner with a crazy none sense story.
The “I talked to the writer and the ending is now changed” thing is essentially that. Can’t believe the richest franchise in entertainment is using the lazy cop out ending I was banned from using at 7 years old.

In the last MCU movie, the final scene would be an autistic kid wearing a Marvel shirt holding onto a snow globe telling the whole MCU plot while a CGI Stan Lee was listening the whole time.
Not if the ending was perfect for the person, then its just being cruel to the character. Which im not gonna lie i think has been done well, some times.
The MCU and some of it's fans nowadays can't handle criticism, they'd rather hype up something that needs some work rather than give constructive criticism which can be used to help these projects improve but if you point that out, then to them, you're just part of the problem.

As an MCU fan I can handle criticism. And even give my own. But a lot of the criticism is worse than the claims they stake.

Wakanda Forever was a masterpiece but I'm still disappointed in phase 4
What is scary that there are still MCU die-hards out there who go to the latest MCU release, lap it up and stay for the post credits scenes to speculate what they mean and salivate who will be in the next movie. It's not just movie going. It's part of their identity. Likewise their are some people still pumped for season 44 of Survivor this week, long after the show ceased to be water cooler talk.

your well made point about, "thinking it's a lot smarter than it is" and thinking the audience is dumb is a huge problem in Hollywood these days. Not just with the MCU. In my opinion the 4th wall breaks work in Deadpool because we know he's kinda nuts. So from a in universe prospective he could just be talking to himself. The MCU isn't set up that way. We know Jen is talking directly to us. She isn't just thinking out loud.
The X-Men universe was pretty broken anyway, so I could still enjoy Deadpool movies as kind of standalone movies.
I was concerned about how he'd be handled in the long-lived and so far pretty solidly constructed MCU. I guess I have my answer, this is only going to encourage him. 😐

I'm pretty sure there's no AI on the Disney lot running Marvel, so she's not talking to or entering the "real world" at any point. I think of it as more like when Ultron became aware of Uatu. Let's say she's in Earth-199998, while she's there, she still has moments addressing the audience in Earth-199997.
No, the 4th wall breaks in Deadpool works because it serves his character. He's not just nuts, he has disregards to lotta things, including more conventional narrative. So it works.
She Hulk did it just for the sake of it. The writers mistook self awareness for cleverness. I say she can break she 4th wall without being nuts, but it needs to be purposeful. As in written better.

Yes, and I haven’t seen She Hulk but some other commenter said that the 4th wall breaks there were trying to explain stuff to the audience and treating you like you’re stupid, whereas Deadpool mainly makes funny comments and references.
Marvel recently substantially delayed some large projects like Fantastic Four, Blade, and Secret Wars, and I’m hoping they’ve realized what’s wrong and are trying to put more time into these projects

I found the meta moment of pointing out how bad the last episode was, came across as ironic. As if it implies that the creators took advantage of the '4th wall' breaking aspect of the character and used it as an excuse to write something poor.
Pointing out how bad something is doesn't automatically make it less bad.

Having the main character agree with the show's critics about the writing direction was a bizarre step, and must be pretty embarrassing to anyone who was praising the writing throughout.

She-Hulk meeting the writers and meeting ‘Kevin’ is a very funny idea,
but it overstayed its welcome and just felt like the writers both giving themselves a Deus Ex Machina while somehow patting themselves on the back for doing it..
It would have worked if the show was actually great. But the whole episode I was like "what the fuck is happening..." and then they throw that in on top of it all. Way too self congratulatory.

We know where the ending came from. According to the writers themselves they had over 20 thrown out endings before they decided on this. Which basically had to retcon everything. Other comments and interviews from them, the writing staff, seems to talk about how it was extremely challenging process, writing.
We have one story, again from the head writer, how she almost quit because the robot marvel boss was not going to have a hat. We learn that they had constant clashes with the studio and between each other. Where someone was basically on board to meditate, and had to do so multiple times.
What does this mean. The writers themselves admit they did a poor job and basically seems they pitched episode ideas and tried to pick which ones were the best, having no connection with each other.
Its even worse... they had an idea for the main story, and they did it. Their plan from day one was it so give actual fans who are passionate about Marvel a FU! They just wanted to make fans angry and throw their "troll hate" back at them.
That was the entire idea of this show. And even more pathetic... they are proud of themself for getting so much negative attention, cause they think that means they did a good job. Just think about that... their entire plan was to give fans of the Character and Marvel in general the finger... thats why they did everything to make this show as bad as possible, just to trigger the online reactions they think Trolls give female characters for no reason... so they can make fun of them in the last episode...

I think the writers wanted the show to be a complete troll/commentary, similar to the vibe of the last episode. I think the higher ups wanted a rehashing of what has worked. Remember when they started production, ppl werent as negative about the formula being repeatedly used. They did a bunch of reshoots for the last episode, and my assumption is they added more of the trolling element, as Jessica Gao has spoken about how she had been pushing for more of that, but we dont get much of it until episode 9. On the other hand, they may have just added questions about mutants, red hulk easter eggs, etc. Either way, I think the 9th episode would have hit harder if She-Hulk had griped about the formulaic content creation more, and could reference her comments in past episode with KEVIN

She-Hulk also fails at being SHE-HULK. Jen, the REAL Jen from the comics and 90s She-Hulk cartoon, is fun, friendly, full of empathy and friendly sass, she's flirty and LOVES being She-Hulk and she's independent and confident without being arrogant and certainly she doesn't lament and complain about what she doesn't have.
Also in Bruce's childhood, his father was ferociously abusive and even murdered his mother in front of them. The only person Bruce could rely on, his entire life, his only friend in the world until he met Betty Ross and Rick Jones, was Jen. His cousin.
This series was character assassination at its most brutal, especially for how she treated Bruce and belittled him for his struggles and traumas.

When a T.V. show has somehow made a real person look like a CG character that doesn't fit the scene said person is in just by changing skin color, then you know something is off. Sometimes people forget that when using CG to do things you have to do more than just change the color. You have to adjust the shadows and lighting too, just so you can make the effect feel like it's actually real. This show does not do that, very often.

I think one of the points you mentioned is exactly the core problem of all this: fomo. They *know* they can basically get away with anything because the way they interweave plots and character arcs *force* the audience to stay in touch. They don't need to, they choose to do that. The time you spend consuming their stuff ist time you don't spend with other products.
I consider myself really lucky that I never got too deep into all this, so I'm not "depending" on watching the next movie (and everything else I need to watch to get what's even going on).
Can recommend watching short films or reading short stories as a counter measure to fomo. They're built in ways that never explore every last corner of their universe and therefore help training the brains to accept that we will never see or know everything. ❤️
What I’m starting to realize rn is while the mcu is going down in quality the DC movies are going up especially with the Batman and black Adam. It’s kinda weird but sad because at this point the mcu has not only become super oversaturated but to the point where a majority of their movies and shows feel like they come straight out of an algorithm. Like we’re really at a point where watching the movies and shows have become more like homework than entertainment. The quantity over quality plan, fans from tik tok and Twitter overhyping the mcu and then getting disappointed when the movies and shows don’t meet their expectations, and how this current phase has no clear direction of what it wants to be. Even if wakanda forever ends up being the best film out of phase 4 there was no build up to that unfortunately. Probably after that I’m gonna be done with the mcu cause at this point it’s too much. I might get back into Star Wars or wait for the next MV movie and show.

And not a direct issue with Phase 4 as a whole but another primary issue I had with She Hulk is that it's meant to be a legal drama/comedy and we get hardly any courtroom moments. Some of the main cases that we do get don't even feature Jen at all or are finished in 2 minutes and then on with whatever poor plot that episode wanted to tell. I had hoped for a case of the week style legal comedy and got virtually none of that concept in practice

She hulk very well could’ve been a serious show about a woman that has to struggle between daily life and being a hero all whilst being a public figure. Small intermissions maybe with hulk regressing with his anger control to foreshadow planet hulk (I was seriously pissed they just skipped past it) and Jen trying also to help him and the more she struggles she starts needing help from other superheroes for help. Also could’ve had the illuminati foreshadowed as she may have the final say in hulk being sent off . Have her struggle and struggle until the end where hulk finally loses it. Villains getting out Scot free bcos of corruption or some other matter( another struggle for Jen through the season). Could of very well then made a season 2 and led away from hulk onto Jen and daredevil investigating corruption etc and the opportunity to make a planet hulk film maybe even 2 depending on how deep they want to go into it

I had an issue with the size difference between Hulk and Abomination. In their first fight they were about the same size, Hulk was not half the size of Abomination.

I've been thinking about Jessica Gao's comment that "no one supports female actors" and I can only conclude that she must be talking about studios. As she lives in her Hollywood bubble, she probably thinks this also applies to society itself (globally, not just the U.S). The audience clearly doesn't care about the gender of the lead (insert list of every successful movie with a female lead here). So I assume studios aren't supporting them by giving them the C team when it comes to things like writers (that would actually be you in this case Jessica). That would explain why so many female led movies these days have awful writing. They don't tend to have character arcs, because they don't give them flaws (I'm looking at you Captain Marvel and Rey). They can win just by believing in themselves (that'd be you, America Chavez), rather than showing them training and working to improve themselves. They tell us character traits rather than show them to us (that'd be you Jen Walters, you "genius" - despite constantly being shown to be an idiot). They demonstrate how great they are, not by building up the character but by knocking down existing well liked characters (She-Hulk with the Hulk, Jane Foster with Thor, Rey with Luke Skywalker). They also tend to make the male villains complete idiots (every man in the latest Charlies Angels movie). They seem to be able to master their new powers straight away (She-Hulk, Rey).
When it is a male character; he has flaws, the villain is strong and powerful rather than a joke, the character usually loses or hits a low point that he needs to recover from, they show character traits rather than tell us about them, they show us them training to improve, if their powers are new then we see them getting used to using them (It doesn't even have to be some big separate scene - Captain America goes flying through a window the first time he tries running around a corner after getting his new powers, because he lost his balance!). And so on.
When did Hollywood forget how to write basic things when it came to women?
Anyway, Jessica Gao is clearly benefiting from the studios not supporting female actors. Because if they did support them, she would be out of a job and a team of actual writers would have been brought in.

Sure, in real time it might seem like a lot of new characters in just the last 2 years, but we've seen more material in Phase 4 than we had in all three of the previous phases combined (2999 minutes for the Infinity Saga in total, 3540 minutes in Phase 4 by itself).
Only counting named characters that are in more than one movie (so most of the villains don't make this list cause a lot of them are one-and-done), and obviously Phase 4 we don't know if all these characters are going to return so I used characters that I think have been confirmed to return or I think are very likely to return in a future project.
Phase 1: 31 characters introduced.
Phase 2: 30 characters introduced.
Phase 3: 35 characters introduced.
Phase 4: 56 characters introduced.
Now, this is a bit uneven because runtime of these are substantially different. Phase 1 only has 6 projects, where Phase 4 has 17, so comparing the two of them is not congruent at all. So taking the runtime of each phase, divided by the number of new characters introduced during those phases, we get a measure of how often they are introducing new characters that don't vanish after their initial movie/show.
Phase 1: 6 Projects: 744 minutes / 31 characters = 1 new character every 24 minutes
Phase 2: 6 Projects: 758 minutes / 30 characters = 1 new character every 25.2 minutes
Phase 3: 11 Projects: 1497 minutes / 35 characters = 1 new character every 42.8 minutes
Phase 4: 17 Projects: 3540 minutes /56 characters = 1 new character every 63.2 minutes.

The best point you made (among many good points) - watching the show felt like homework. Any other show on streaming, you abandon it if you aren't enjoying it. There's plenty else to watch. But with the MCU you're afraid of missing something important when you watch a later movie or better TV show, so you complete it out of obligation rather than enjoyment.

My theory. The industry was freaked out about the disaster that was Batman vs Superman in 2016. It was too dark and serious for the casual fan and the movie was a box office bomb. So the studio heads decided to go hard comedy on these franchises and we get garbage like She-Hulk, Thor: Love and Thunder etc.
The MCU was always a comedic franchise way before BVS . Iron Man released in 2008. They just lack their focus and commitment they used to have in Infinity Saga. Plus Disney just want to milk this franchise as long as it is profitable. They did the same with Star wars

A good comparison is the first Thor movie that certainly had comedic moments but the main characters were treated with respect. The sudden 180 into the characters being aware that they're in a multi-million dollar franchise completely undermines everything.
I can buy Kang and the TVA making sure that the timeline runs the way it does. But imagine Pepper Potts discovering that Tony died because a bunch of nerds in a writers room dictated it. Imagine anyone in the MCU discovering that they either died or lost loved ones for 5 years because some computer said so.
This is probably the most desperate Marvel have gotten when it comes to fanservice. Jen name drops the X-Men so fans will be happy that Wolverine is showing up. Hulk reveals he has the lead actor from Shrek: The Musical as a son so fans will be happy that they're making Planet Hulk after the fact.

This is why I like DC more. The Comedy in marvel is usually not funny at all, but it's not just that, it's how the characters talk to eachother, like it's trying so hard to be funny but it's just bad. DC comics has light characters with Humour but it doesn't feel overdone, there are a few cringe things but it's not all the time. This is why serious Superhero stories are better, not really dark but without the cringe humour.
I just saw Bojack Horseman's episode Hank After Dark which takes on #MeToo and is about how a character brings up allegations against a famous and powerful TV actor. They managed to both tackle a very serious subject, yet make it hilarious. I was laughing all the way through.
The catalyst of this was Ragnarok, that movie sent the wrong message to the execs, that movie made as much money as winter soldier, and they think it's easier to make slapstick humor for the same amount of profit than hire competent writers to write some serious drama.

I’m honestly more glad that Thor 4 made a larger audience realize how forced the comedy has become and how it’s just no longer organic and natural. I noticed in Guardians 2 tbh.
I did like how they made Daredevil as acrobatic how he actually should be like the comics so that was cool
She Hulk writers are trying to stand up for the small, the women, etc. and speak up for what’s wrong with the world… while putting down others, portraying men and others as idiots, and just causing further divide and reasons for some to like the show even less. They clearly are grabbing a certain target audience through Thor, through Ms. Marvel, through She Hulk and don’t care about the true fan base that was built up the last decade or so. They want the young general and are targeting what’s being soaked into their minds now.
Deadpool is a weird dude so him breaking the fourth wall makes sense. Everyone else just see Pool talking to thin air and assume he's crazy.
She-Hulk is a normal sane woman so her fourth wall breaks feel out of place and literally smashing through the Disney+ menu is turning the whole MCU into a dumb joke.

Yeah, I keep seeing “But there was a time when he was more lighthearted in the comics”. The thing of it is, he wasn’t popular then. His character just works best with a serious tone.

@@kickass2117 That's not true at all. All three seasons were massively popular, had the same tone, and fans love a serious Daredevil. The character became one of the most popular superheroes in comics once they retooled him to be darker.

I'm talking about casual fans who like the quippy joke cracking characters or big cgi heavy spectacles of the mcu. A quick google search will show you that season 3 viewership had substantially declined compared to the first season. This was also the same year when mcu was at the peak with Infinity war's release and people were more ecstatic about it than the Netflix show.

Going by RT and other sources, the show maintained its popularity even into its third season. The only reason why Netflix stopped doing the Marvel shows was because Disney was setting up Disney+.

Supposedly it’s Kang… But he was introduced back in the Loki series, which was 1 1/2 years ago. Why they’re taking so long to get back to any “main storyline” and chucking characters at us that we might not ever see again is beyond me. 🙈

Not every film was connected, but they still contributed to the overall plot or character development for that phase.
NONE of these new shows are serving a purpose/building up to something and characters are not developing, so it all just feels aimless, lol.

Great vid! Two things I'd like to add:
1.Regarding Thor LaT: I seriously believe Taika Waititi is far better at handleling drama than comedy. Jojo Rabbit is the prove of it. I think Thor LaT is astronomically better the second half of it when it starts to take itself seriously, but the first hour of the movie it's just a dumb festival. I think Taika is great at covering drama with humour. But in this movie he just went too far with comedy, I don''t know if it was because Disney forced him to do so or if it was his choice, but it just doesn't work. For me the best Thor scenes are the ones where he opens up to other characters, like the elevator scene with Loki or in Infinity War when he tells Rocket "what else can I lose?". We are talking about a guy here who lost his father, his mother, his brother, his sister, his friends, and now the love of his life.
2. Regarding Daredevil: one thing that really pisses me off is that there is no sign of Foggy and Karen in this comeback. I guess we'll have to wait until Born Again comes out, but these two characters were so good and so crucial to Matt's development as Daredevil. It's great to have Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio back, but I really hope they algo bring back Foggy and Karen because again, they added so much to Matt's character.

Marvel and Star Wars streaming shows are victims of lazy writing. The writers they hire never seem to understand the franchise nor what the fans are expecting. As much as people think Kevin Feige is some kind of media-genius, I question his leadership by the products he's allowing to go out to the public.
I don’t think She-Hulk wanted their cake and eat it too, I think they got their cake, but didn’t know what to do with it, and threw their hands up and said, let’s decorate it with whatever is popular these days. No thought, over decorate and left a bad taste in our mouths.
I may be speaking for myself, but I think Disney’s obsession with trying to keep our attention with new releases is only exacerbating the problem. That point about vfx reaching deadlines is indicative of the issues the MCU and Disney+ suffers in general. They’re sacrificing quality in an attempt to placate the audience ASAP. More content more frequently doesn’t make us want more of it-QUALITY content does that.

I might even go as far as to say COVID broke the MCU. I feel like that phase broke our humor with the constant stimulation of TikTok and the creators of these shows and movies got infected with that same stimulus. I hate the feeling of being forced to laugh, or something trying too hard and ever since 2020 many shows and movies have been making the same mistake.
I think it was just a point in time where the constant cycle and machine was "turned off" for a bit, and audiences have come back with higher standards.
Viewers won't just go see Lightyead and make it a $1B hit just because it is Pixar and Toy Story adjacent.
Doctor Strange and Thor won't just be gifted $1B for being big Marvel movies like Captain Marvel.
Top Gun gets rewarded, even No Way Home gets rewarded.
Jurassic World Dominion makes the least of the 3 new films, Thor 4 makes less than the 3rd.
Audiences just demand a higher standard, or rather aren't satisfied with the usual standard any more.
Lockdowns honestly woke moviegoers up and made them more discerning.
Lightyear was a huge box office flop while Minions crushed it. The appetite for an animated movie was there, but not for what they were pushing with Lightyear.
