Excellent, as ever. At the end I kept wondering "has it really been 5 years of trash and losses? How is that possible? How is it that they militantly refuse to get the message?" I have a long-running natter with Adam Post about this. My theory is that smaller studios, esp film studios, generally do project financing. Pitch movie, agree, secure finance, produce, exercise cost control, finish, screen, get very direct feedback on success. However, Disney is a conglomerate. They behave as if funding is disconnected to production and results because... it is. Therefore they are more like a bureaucracy, or Stalinist tractor factory. Doesn't matter what the quality or demand for tractors is, the answer is You Get Tractor. But but we like family cars now! You Get Tractor. Maybe a light pickup? You Get Tractor.

As a woman, Black Widow remains my biggest personal MCU disappointment. They had an opportunity to tell the PERFECT darker and gritty origin story, which Natasha absolutely had with the Red Room. It should have been about her childhood, brutal training, time spent as a brainwashed operative (no mind control, that's world-shatteringly stupid), and how Clint was able to reach her, be about to kill her, and make the different call. It would have had a female lead, could have introduced plenty of diverse and memorable characters from Widow missions all around the globe. But what we got instead was worse than hot garbage. An idiotic villain. A forced protagonist replacement. Red Guardian as a punchline. The "heroes" casually murdering a prison full of guards and inmates alike without a thought. And the most boring "oh wow, Taskmaster is actually a woman" gimmick that tried to whitewash Natasha's actual dark history by pretending she never really killed Dreykov's daughter. Finally a plot so full of holes, contrivances, and stupidity that I gave up halfway through. I hate that movie so much ugh

when Avengers first came out, I started writing a fanfiction about when Clint found Natasha, but I lost interest when the "canon" ended up going in this direction. It was so disappointing.
I'm almost 30 years old woman and I never felt I was lacking female heroes. We had them, A LOT, just in other media/franchises. Superheroines? The japanese magical girl genre had it's best years in late 90s/early 2000s and quite a lot of those shows made it's way to the West! Sailor Moon had 30th anniversarry last year. Winx Club is 20 next year. 20+ years of animated Barbie movies. Disney Princesses from Disney renessaince. A lot of shows/books based on fashion doll lines that were focused on all-female friends groups. Totally Spies for non-magical action show. Kim Possible too. W.i.t.c.h. for girl-focused comics, VERY big in Europe. Young Adult Book section is dominated by female authors and feamle protagonists for like 15 years. I feel like people in those interviews ignore all of those because they are a few years older than me, maybe had less female heroes, stopped paying attention, because they grew out of cartoons and only remember things from 40 years ago and their childhood, ignoring "progress" that was made already, years ago. Or just really want girl-oriented Marvel/Star Wars in particular, ignoring that other stories exists.
I think your last sentence there is onto something. The way I see it, the people behind the M-She-U want to control media at the level of the MCU and Star Wars so they can push their politics on the rest of us. They don't care about Sailor Moon or Kim Possible because those shows don't have the cultural influence of the MCU and because the female leads are actual characters and not personifications of Woke identity politics.

People also ignore a very current female hero in one of the most popular highly rated franchises of all time.. Eleven in Stranger Things! The badass protagonist of this series started out as a little girl and is now a grown young woman. Her character always was/will be LOVED and respected. Eleven has been and continues to be almost entirely overlooked as a strong badass female character because she’s just such an amazing CHARACTER. Her gender has never needed to be forced front and center as a means of propping up a weak character who needs the woke-identity points for use as a club or shield against the audience or critics. Those of us who never grow tired of shitting on the M-she-U and girlboss garbage are the ones who LOVE the character of Eleven, who isn’t a “female hero”- she’s just a “hero”, an absolute epic fucking badass, period.

Actors are adult pretenders, earning their wage by saying lines from a piece of paper. They are paid to feign emotions and pretend to be other characters with the purpose to tell a story that entertains us. That is as far as their influence reaches.
When I was growing up in the late 80s and 90s (as a half-white, half-asian kid) I was already watching diverse entertainment. I loved Eddie Murphy, Bruce Lee, Will Smith, Jackie Chan, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc, etc, etc. I could relate to people of all colors. Hell, I could relate to humanoid turtles. I never needed to see myself on the screen because I enjoyed vicariously living through the heroes on my TV. When I was a teenager, I got into anime and I have been in love with it for 20+ years. I am not Japanese and I am not part of their culture. But I enjoy engaging with and learning about their culture. And I can still relate to the characters because human emotions are universal. People have spent thousands of years hearing, reading, and watching stories with all kinds of people. The ancient Greeks hearing the Odyssey weren't demigods. No one reading King Arthur were kings and knights of a mythical Britain. No one reading Superman were refugees from an alien planet. No one watching Star Wars were space wizard monks. Normal (non-narcissistic) people can relate to people who don't look like them. I am an aspiring writer and none of my characters are self-inserts. I have enough self-reflection to realize that I am not a very interesting person. I'm just a normal guy. And, as a reader, I like to read about interesting people. Therefore, I write characters who are interesting and do interesting things. And, most importantly, those characters are defined by much, much, much more than their skin color, gender and sexuality. TLDR: People enjoy fiction because they can vicariously live through the characters and people can relate to any character, regardless of whether those character look like them.
As a half filipino irishmen, i agree with this sentiment fully. In the 90s, we were color blind. Nowadays, everyone is color obsessed. It's pathetic how far we've collectively fallen and how shallow our media has become. Since Phase 4 has felt like taking a high dive into a shallow puddle, i've spent alot of recovery time in the world of Anime myself. Mostly Berserk, just to counterbalance all the cotton candy messaging in the MSheU. Something indulgent yet reflective to wash my mouth out after being force fed lazy DEI politics and lazy attempts at brainwashing me into believing i somehow caused all these problems. 😂 Safe to say, i'll never go back and i won't be subjecting my son to the shit they're pushing in Phase 5. I'd rather hand him a few volumes of Shonen Jump and let him go from there. Knowing he won't be exposed to media villainizing his skin color or gender, knowing he'll learn something of value instead of being groomed by self-insert authors pushing a message on a company soapbox.
Fantastic comment dude. I made the same point months ago to some dude who was trying to defend Disney the other day with all of this woke nonsense. I made the exact point about how as a kid I related to 4 mutant Turtles ffs, hell I wanted to BE Leo! I dont care about whether the character represents me, is the same color etc etc.
I challenge you to find one person who can’t empathize with tmnt: it’s so basic at its core that the fantastical elements just fade away. It’s got brotherhood and family between radically different individuals who fight and argue but at the end of it all always confirm that they are a family and you always stick by your family. It’s got coming of age stories unique to each of the 4 turtles, control, responsibility, confidence, and not being a goofball for 5 minutes Mickey. Yes they are turtles and ninjas on top of that, fighting aliens and mutants and I think dragons on at least one occasion but at their core they were meant to be relatable to everyone.
As a green person with tentacles as hair, I’m glad to see someone like me finally respresented on screen in a superhero movie that gives me the delusion that I can fly and lift mountains. Thanks marvel

@amrotamer6951 in The Marvels we had Kamala's dad and brother who just basically screamed the entire time, we had the water world leader who was madly in love with and dependent on Carol, we had a SWORD scientist who was shown to be less intelligent then his female colleagues and then we had the worst of all - Nick Fury, his characterisation in this movie was the worst in the entire MCU and made him seem completely inept.

I love how their interviews give away the game and the quality of the movies. "It's because I'm finally in it and represented." There was nothing apparently good to talk about in regards to the actual movies. It was just them that was "the good part". One thing that just crossed my mind: You always see stars wear the merch of the movie they are promoting at the moment. And that makes sence. But sometimes I think wearing merch for something else maybe even another movie would work even more. For example: Henry Cavill is a Warhammer nerd and at many occasions he just nerded about it. Very passionate I might add. And this, this real "advertising" for something they love makes me so much more interested in anything they touch. You feel like you know a bit about what makes someone tick. With the glorious message of Henry Cavil creating a Warhammer Series, I am so much more engaged because I know how deeply evolved he is in Warhammer.

Hearing you mention Hulk being the one to take out Thanos' ship makes me picture a scene where Thanos is in the middle of beating a few heroes in a fight, clearly in relish as he turns the battle in his favour, then turning as he hears the iconic Hulk roar and he sees this green monstrosity jump through the air like a cannon into his ship and start tearing it to pieces. Then you see that look on his face that he had when Carol destroyed it

The point Woke wants you to believe is that you can only feel validated as a human being is if you see someone that you think looks like you in a movie or TV show.
That is exactly what I feel. People outside the USA watch Hollywood movies to see "American" stories. It's very colonial of these "Equity" types to say that they have a duty to show other people's cultures (actually their own interpretation of other people's culture). What I want to see in my local theatre, is more movies from other countries than Hollywood (and yes, it's not even American movies, Hollywood is its own thing now that does not even represent the USA anymore, let alone anyone else). That is what I want for diversity. Not Hollywood's version of diversity which boils down to showing lesbian women of various pigmentation. I want different worldviews, and that won't be represented by Hollywood, but by seeing movies from different countries made by people with different worldviews.

I watch hollywood because I want to see America and I watch BBC because I want british television. But they forget that we are actually intelligent people and know what we want. To be fair, inserting Carol into the Endgame fight gave us its most glorious scene - Thanos ripping the power stone off his glove and using it to sucker punch that insufferable cow halfway across the battlefield.
There is nothing inherently wrong with having a female be a lead in anything, some of the best stories have a woman as the main character. The problem with most films/shows these days is that they go about it in the worst way possible. Instead of making a great character that is strong who just so happens to be a woman, they instead do their absolute best to make the story all about her and nothing else to the point of madness. Not taking any risks, protecting the lead from any sort of serious injury/consequence. And instead of focusing on the concept for the plot and a cool story, they focus on the message of "empowerment" and "diversity." They want to check boxes, not create something meaningful and artistic. In the process of doing that they lose themselves in that whole idea of diversity and wanting to flaunt it like an achievement, and the entire story goes into the shitter. Making the character come off as just unlikable or unrelatable, in the pursuit of pleasing one specific demographic they neglect everything else that makes a character a character...or a story a story. Spoilers for anyone who has not watched these shows/movies Mizu from Blue Samurai is a perfect example of a female lead that fits right into the narrative it's trying to tell, it also manages to strike that perfect balance of having her be an extremely capable fighter who can kick ass but not someone who is invincible at all times. She gets her shit wrecked quite a few times, and doesn't just over power every opponent she fights. A lot of the time she has to outsmart or outmaneuver them in order to win, which makes the fights way more engaging and tense. She's also a flawed character who makes a ton of questionable choices, and characters don't shy away from calling out the mistakes she makes through the narrative. Vi from Arcane is another example, that shows honestly a masterclass in many things but having good lead is defiantly one of it's strong points. She's strong, but not overpowered and gets beaten a few times in the first season. She also has a lot of flaws and doesn't handle certain situations well...like THAT event in the third episode with her sister, but it is all balanced out with her good qualities, such as her loyalty and loving heart beneath her tough exterior. Which makes her an incredibly dynamic character to follow, and not just a typical tough girl character. I can honestly keep going: Ripley from Alien, Sarah Connor from Terminator 1 and 2, Clare from Claymore (super underrated tbh), Alita from Alita Battle Angel (the manga, haven't seen the film), Bayonetta, Wonder Woman from the 2017 film and the Animated series universe. I can keep going but I'd be here all day lol. It's just a damn shame we don't have writers who priorities a well written character first, gender second...because it's this toxic mentality of forced agendas that has lead to this drought of creativity we are witnessing today.

If you haven’t read the manga I highly recommend giving it a read, it’s beautifully drawn and the writing is stellar too. It’s things like these tho which really spark my creative side, and really push me to complete writing my story which I’ve been working on for god knows how long tbh with you…just so we can have actual narratives that don’t depend on cheap gimmicks and can actually have a beginning. A middle. And an ending. Instead of just being milked to death, or diverge into a multiverse with no substance. Or an Agenda filled mess with quote on quote “strong female characters.”
Mikasa from attack on titan is another perfect example of how to write a good strong female character without shoving it down the viewers throat . Heck the whole show of attack on titan has some very well written female characters that I root for naturally

No one who has a reasonable mind has a problem with women being the lead characters in a film. It's about how they are written and portrayed. That's the main problem when the women are consistently shown to be morally bankrupt in Marvel and yet we're still supposed to like them apparently.

Yeah, they could have made that movie like winter soldier (best mcu movie) and had a cool spy thriller. Oh no, the message is more important. The whole taskmaster reveal was such a joke.
The writer/director on _Black Widow_ proved she was a complete idiot when she said she couldn't figure out how to work Taskmaster into the story as someone who would work for Dreykov. That's why the character ended up being his daughter. In the comics Taskmaster is a mercenary; he'll work for _anyone_ who pays him. The Avengers have even hired him to help train teenagers with superpowers! Also the line "The only natural resource this world has too much of...GIRLS" is so unbelievably cringey I can't believe it made into the movie.
I was constantly waiting for Carol to get her just desserts for her actions. She currently has a larger body count than Thanos. And we’re expected to worship her as a hero. Iron Man started as a selfish character and grew. Carol is nothing but selfish and she has not changed or been humbled. Only affirmed that everything she has done is okay in long run.
One of my favorite villains on the MCU was Cate Blanchett's very female Hela. I find her exceedingly more memorable than these cut-and-paste female "heroes" and for much better reason.

When Iron Fist came out, Disney (and its fanboys) were acting like it was the first movie to ever feature an Asian person. As a person with Chinese blood running through his veins and someone who has been watching Asian pop culture his whole life, that seriously angered me. These people were dismissing 100 years of Asian film making to prop up some crappy superhero movie. I even had someone tell me that no modern kid will want to watch a Bruce Lee movie because those movies are too old. I was born 13 years after Bruce died and I loved his films when I first saw them in the early 90s. I'm not going to call that person racist for saying something so stupid, but I will say that people like that are incredibly ignorant and disrespectful.

I think something Hollywood is really failing to understand when they do interviews where actors do nothing but speak about their gender and ethnicity, is that at the end of the day, all the actor has said is this movie exists, I also exist (and we already knew they were in the movie). The key problem with that is that we already knew the movie existed, and we DON'T CARE that a random person we don't know exists, not because of gender or ethnicity, but because moviestars just aren't a thing anymore (and thank god for that). There's a select few actors left whose fame has lasted from that era, but does anyone really go to see a movie they know nothing about (and I mean nothing) just because a specific actor is in it? People definitely used to, but that's nowhere near close to that level now. We don't care about the actors. They are boring people in real life because 99% of people on the planet are boring in real life. We care about the MOVIE. You know, the non-boring place we go to in order to escape real life? So when all an interview has ultimately accomplished is telling you that a boring person you don't know or care about exists, then it has accomplished nothing.

Multiverse of madness came out around the same time as everything everywhere all at once. 'Everything' had 2 main diverse female characters. They had a background and a story that was relatable. Just because i am not that ethnicity does not mean i cannot emphasize with well written characters.

Yep, what Disney did with the Marvel Universe films by handing it over to people who never understood how the franchise had become so successful can be liked to all those producers who tried to emulate the success of Star Wars in 1977 by making films that only had 'strange creatures', 'spaceships', and 'explosions' in them as if these things were the great secret of success. Forget story, characterisation, quality of SFX, editing panache, directorial vision etc. and just bundle together what appear (to simpletons) to be the key elements. Those behind the M-She-U saw only superheroes, big firework-like displays of special effects and thought they could just repeat the same things with women in the key roles - with no thought to character, plot, or understanding of audience.
The paradox that marvel films were far more entertaining and appreciated by a much wider audience when they didn’t give a damn about representation. And far far more lucrative financially. Quite the paradox.
Godzila Minus One is the true victory of diversity. We finally surpass the xenophobia with foreigner films and watched a Japanese film with the same respect and interest we had with Hollywood. There are no American Asian actors pushing new stereotypes over the old ones, or powers rangers erasing original actors and cultural elements. We saw a Japanese film, with Japanese actors, with elements of Japanese culture and we call it one of the best films of the year. plus the film has a lot of Messages and none bother us.

I will make a distinction with Kate Bishop. That's a good character, that not only has a personality and likeability, but also is a fan of the character that she is going to replace. Seeing her following Clint around like a lost puppy made perfect sense.
Agreed, Kate’s the only one I feel can properly take up the mantle. Plus I also liked that she was willing to turn her mom over to the police for committing crimes instead of pardoning her like you usually see now.
I'd say Kate and Yelena both felt likeable to me, out of the new characters, they were the only ones I liked. The rest all were the same, and not in a good way, because they all sucked and were bland.
Yeah and it's thoroughly established that Kate straight up would have died on multiple occasions without Hawkeye helping her. Plus, the show gets to have its cake and eat it too because they also have Yelena, and given that we know Yelena received the same training as Black Widow, it's not at all a surprise when she displays a similar level of fighting skill, so the show gets to have a badass female lead to hit Disney's quota. And when she just strolls onto the screen and says she's going to kill Hawkeye, instead of scratching our heads and thinking "and how the hell are you going to do that?" we instantly instead think "hold up why does she want to kill Hawkeye?" Because we know with her training, killing Clint is something she can feasibly do. So we're asking questions about why the characters are doing what they do, not asking questions in an attempt to reassemble our suspense of disbelief after it's just been shattered. The complete reverse of this is when we see Thanos unable to even scratch Captain Marvel unless he uses an Infinity Stone, therefore Captain Marvel's mere existence means Thanos should have been taken out decades before Infinity War. His army couldn't save him since we've seen Captain Marvel tear through spaceships (including Thanos') on multiple occasions. We know Thanos was active in pursuing his 50% population cull even before he had the stones (it's how he met Gamora, we literally see this), therefore he wasn't hiding. Therefore she could have found him. So the only logical reason for her not to kill him ages ago is because she couldn't... but he couldn't even scratch her, and suspense of disbelief shatters. She either needs to be weaker than Thanos or she needs a genuine reason to let him continue his repeated genocides. But we know she's stronger, AND she's portrayed as a hero. So what the hell? It just, doesn't, work. So the power scaling breaks the story. Captain Marvel's mere existence instantly makes literally everything around her make less sense because she's too strong not to solve every problem in two seconds. She's basically Superman with no weakness. And notice something interesting? NONE of the criticism I just levelled at Captain Marvel and NONE of the praise I gave Kate Bishop or Yelena have ANYTHING to do with their gender.
What still drives me crazy is that Captain Vagina was flying around the galaxy for decades while Thanos slaughtered half of the population of countless world's and she did nothing, all the while she could have just smashed through his ship at any time. (And Drax never got his revenge on Thanos)

Marvel is trying to cater to an audience that isn't interested in them. Yes, there are female fans but for the most part Marvel, DC and the suoerhero genre as a whole caters to men. Barbie was successful because of its Bait & Switch but also because it catered exclusively to a female audience. We like action and spectacle, they like drama and romance.

Marvel *is* trying to reach men, to program them into grovelling to and worshipping women without expecting any gratitude or reward. The funny thing is that many of us oh-so-coveted women preferred the first three phases because we liked watching competent men going on a hero's journey. When Marvel decided to be inclusive, I kind of hoped they'd just add women into the mix instead of trying to tear men down in order to artificially lift up their female counterparts.

There is now basically just one remaining old school movie star - Tom Cruise. The guy is as far away from my own way of thinking (very different religion etc.) but I love his movies for a very simple reason. He actually likes entertaining people and doesn't try to exclude others and put his own personal ideas into the characters he plays. When he plays an action hero he plays a classic action hero not some guy lecturing us about wokeness or anything else. I would never know his beliefs and ideas at all if I just watched his movies or even his interviews (he is extremely careful to only ever talk about the movie on these promotional videos) and that's EXACTLY what I want from a movie star.
Is he alone though? Russell Crowe seems to be on the have his both feet in the ground as well. i loved Critical Drinker's interview of him concerning The Pope's Exorcist, which gave a a very untypical vibe I could only name as 'genuine'.

My major problem with the Black Widow movie, apart from the obvious, was how they establish how the black widows have no agency other than to serve the whims and will of a patriarchal figure and pretty much retcon Nats’ narrative arch that began with her making amends because of all the red in her ledger to saying she pretty much sacrificed a little girls life in order to murder this patriarchal figure, ignoring the fact that when she planned this hit she wasn’t under the influence of the patriarchal musk, but working alongside SHIELD and the story straight up ignores she knowingly killed a child and yet it’s not her fault, it’s the girls fathers fault for being a manipulative misogynist, and she gets a free pass for reasons. That’s the shit that gets to me. When a man does evil it’s his fault entirely, but when a woman does evil it isn’t her fault, she was just a victim of the patriarchy. I cannot condone that level of solipsistic thinking.
Imagine if Tony had never self destructed his millions of dollars & dozens of hours worth of preparation for Thanos for 0 reason at the end of Iron Man 3. & instead of Carol coming in to save the day, you see the iron legion come in. From the very first avengers movie, I was very much looking forward to a black widow movie where they finally explained what happened with her and Hawkeye in Budapest. That movie at that time would have done insanely well.
Any sane person would see how Marvel Comics has absolutely nosedived in quality and sales and know that it is not something to emulate in a cinematic universe. And yet, Disney and Kevin Feige think it is a good idea to drop a quarter of a billion dollars on every failed character who couldn't even sell 20k issues a month and/or keep a series going past 12 issues.
At an accelerated rate too. Not like they had blueprints and hindsights explaining in detail the shortcomings of characters like the New/Young Avengers, Kamala Kahn, Ironheart, Ironlad, Wiccan, Hulkling, Amadeus Cho, Captain Marvel, Silk, Lady Thor, etc. They had a decade and a half of notes and they ignored all of it. It should be no real surprise they're crashing and burning now.
It wasn't that long ago. Marvel Comics' quality nosedived in 2015 with they did their "All New, All Different Marvel" initiative. At that time DC was killing it with "Rebirth"...so naturally they decided to push diversity and inclusion with "Infinite Frontier" and killed the remaining interest of a whole bunch of fans.
I've heard that Ms. Marvel's actor, whatever her name is, wasn't that much of an elitist, self-absorbed snob like, say, Brie Larson. Apparently she was generally liked by those who watched her show. I think it's telling that she starts her response regarding representation by saying at first she didn't see the big deal, but then [blah, blah, blah]. Assuming she's actually a nice person I wouldn't be surprised if pushing the _The Message_ wasn't that important to her, but that she was coached by Disney, etc. to say these things to help maintain the narrative tour. At least I'd like to hope so, and hold on to that dying spark of positivity when it comes to modern media and their mostly narcissistic population.
I watched almost all of the first 3 phases in the MCU in theater. I did see quite a few women: 1) with their dates (husbands, boyfriends, etc) and 2) with their sons (often chaperoning a group of preteen boys). Not once did I see a "group" of women enter any theater. At any given viewing I would guess the audience of all the ones I attended to be about 65% male.
Maybe im weird, but I've never identified with a character, especially not for race or sex, I never looked at tony stark and said "an alcoholic, genius, playboy, billionaire, narcissist, with a metal super suit!!! Just like me!

I loved Jan and Carol from Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Jan is one of my favorite characters from the show, actually. And that's because of who she is. She is a phenomenal character who understands her limits and never puts people down to make herself look good. Same with Carol. Yeah, she's a bit of a hot-head, but several tones throughout the show you see her feeling like she doesn't feel she is good enough to be an Avenger. She has humility and, again, she doesn't act better than other people. The same can be said for Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl from Justice League, Starfire and Raven from Justice League, even Jean Grey and Storm from X-Men Evolution. It's not about gender or race, it's about being a good, relatable character.
How many millions were lost with the making of this movie? 100? 200? 250? So VERY stunning!! So brave!! HERSTORY made, before our very eyes! (well, those who saw it, which doesn't include me)

I agree except Yelena and Kate. Kate messes up a lot - hell, her 1st scene was a screw up since she destroyed the tower clock - with which Hawkeye helped her, she's not OP and she can acknowledge her mistakes (e.g. apologizing to Jack). And Yelena is basically more funnier Natasha and also messes up and isn't OP. That's a huge difference in comparison with all powerful, rude, obnoxious, arrogant and never wrong Captain Marvel, Shuri or Riri. Also the Black Widow movie sucked because it was basically a worse copy of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

It stands to reason that narcissism is at the root of “de-empathisation”.
Movie actors of today arent REAL actors. Youll find them on Broadway, on any theatre where they perform the same 1000+ lines over and over for decade without being on TV and showing off their jupiter sized egos, Theatre actor/actoresses are the real deal. Your primary focus should be changing yourself as close as possible to the person you are portraying in the film, screenplay as close as possible. This comming from an actor myself since elementary school doing plays.
Oddly enough, I do not need a character that is my EXACT body type, gender, religion, socioeconomic background and sexual orientation to feel engaged in a story. In fact I'm ALREADY ME so I don't really need stories about that, I come to art in various forms to experience things OUTSIDE of myself. Now try explaining this to a corporation getting DEI money. It's almost like their goal is the MONEY. Weird, huh?

I have a long-running natter with Adam Post about this. My theory is that smaller studios, esp film studios, generally do project financing. Pitch movie, agree, secure finance, produce, exercise cost control, finish, screen, get very direct feedback on success. However, Disney is a conglomerate. They behave as if funding is disconnected to production and results because... it is. Therefore they are more like a bureaucracy, or Stalinist tractor factory. Doesn't matter what the quality or demand for tractors is, the answer is You Get Tractor. But but we like family cars now! You Get Tractor. Maybe a light pickup? You Get Tractor.

As a woman, Black Widow remains my biggest personal MCU disappointment. They had an opportunity to tell the PERFECT darker and gritty origin story, which Natasha absolutely had with the Red Room. It should have been about her childhood, brutal training, time spent as a brainwashed operative (no mind control, that's world-shatteringly stupid), and how Clint was able to reach her, be about to kill her, and make the different call.
It would have had a female lead, could have introduced plenty of diverse and memorable characters from Widow missions all around the globe. But what we got instead was worse than hot garbage. An idiotic villain. A forced protagonist replacement. Red Guardian as a punchline. The "heroes" casually murdering a prison full of guards and inmates alike without a thought. And the most boring "oh wow, Taskmaster is actually a woman" gimmick that tried to whitewash Natasha's actual dark history by pretending she never really killed Dreykov's daughter. Finally a plot so full of holes, contrivances, and stupidity that I gave up halfway through.

when Avengers first came out, I started writing a fanfiction about when Clint found Natasha, but I lost interest when the "canon" ended up going in this direction. It was so disappointing.
I'm almost 30 years old woman and I never felt I was lacking female heroes. We had them, A LOT, just in other media/franchises. Superheroines? The japanese magical girl genre had it's best years in late 90s/early 2000s and quite a lot of those shows made it's way to the West! Sailor Moon had 30th anniversarry last year. Winx Club is 20 next year. 20+ years of animated Barbie movies. Disney Princesses from Disney renessaince. A lot of shows/books based on fashion doll lines that were focused on all-female friends groups. Totally Spies for non-magical action show. Kim Possible too. W.i.t.c.h. for girl-focused comics, VERY big in Europe. Young Adult Book section is dominated by female authors and feamle protagonists for like 15 years.
I feel like people in those interviews ignore all of those because they are a few years older than me, maybe had less female heroes, stopped paying attention, because they grew out of cartoons and only remember things from 40 years ago and their childhood, ignoring "progress" that was made already, years ago. Or just really want girl-oriented Marvel/Star Wars in particular, ignoring that other stories exists.
I think your last sentence there is onto something. The way I see it, the people behind the M-She-U want to control media at the level of the MCU and Star Wars so they can push their politics on the rest of us. They don't care about Sailor Moon or Kim Possible because those shows don't have the cultural influence of the MCU and because the female leads are actual characters and not personifications of Woke identity politics.

People also ignore a very current female hero in one of the most popular highly rated franchises of all time.. Eleven in Stranger Things! The badass protagonist of this series started out as a little girl and is now a grown young woman. Her character always was/will be LOVED and respected. Eleven has been and continues to be almost entirely overlooked as a strong badass female character because she’s just such an amazing CHARACTER. Her gender has never needed to be forced front and center as a means of propping up a weak character who needs the woke-identity points for use as a club or shield against the audience or critics. Those of us who never grow tired of shitting on the M-she-U and girlboss garbage are the ones who LOVE the character of Eleven, who isn’t a “female hero”- she’s just a “hero”, an absolute epic fucking badass, period.

When I was growing up in the late 80s and 90s (as a half-white, half-asian kid) I was already watching diverse entertainment. I loved Eddie Murphy, Bruce Lee, Will Smith, Jackie Chan, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc, etc, etc. I could relate to people of all colors. Hell, I could relate to humanoid turtles. I never needed to see myself on the screen because I enjoyed vicariously living through the heroes on my TV.
When I was a teenager, I got into anime and I have been in love with it for 20+ years. I am not Japanese and I am not part of their culture. But I enjoy engaging with and learning about their culture. And I can still relate to the characters because human emotions are universal.
People have spent thousands of years hearing, reading, and watching stories with all kinds of people. The ancient Greeks hearing the Odyssey weren't demigods. No one reading King Arthur were kings and knights of a mythical Britain. No one reading Superman were refugees from an alien planet. No one watching Star Wars were space wizard monks. Normal (non-narcissistic) people can relate to people who don't look like them.
I am an aspiring writer and none of my characters are self-inserts. I have enough self-reflection to realize that I am not a very interesting person. I'm just a normal guy. And, as a reader, I like to read about interesting people. Therefore, I write characters who are interesting and do interesting things. And, most importantly, those characters are defined by much, much, much more than their skin color, gender and sexuality.
TLDR: People enjoy fiction because they can vicariously live through the characters and people can relate to any character, regardless of whether those character look like them.
As a half filipino irishmen, i agree with this sentiment fully. In the 90s, we were color blind. Nowadays, everyone is color obsessed. It's pathetic how far we've collectively fallen and how shallow our media has become.
Since Phase 4 has felt like taking a high dive into a shallow puddle, i've spent alot of recovery time in the world of Anime myself. Mostly Berserk, just to counterbalance all the cotton candy messaging in the MSheU. Safe to say, i'll never go back and i won't be subjecting my son to the shit they're pushing in Phase 5. I'd rather hand him a few volumes of Shonen Jump and let him go from there. I challenge you to find one person who can’t empathize with tmnt: it’s so basic at its core that the fantastical elements just fade away. It’s got brotherhood and family between radically different individuals who fight and argue but at the end of it all always confirm that they are a family and you always stick by your family. It’s got coming of age stories unique to each of the 4 turtles, control, responsibility, confidence, and not being a goofball for 5 minutes Mickey. Yes they are turtles and ninjas on top of that, fighting aliens and mutants and I think dragons on at least one occasion but at their core they were meant to be relatable to everyone.

One thing that just crossed my mind: You always see stars wear the merch of the movie they are promoting at the moment. And that makes sence. But sometimes I think wearing merch for something else maybe even another movie would work even more.

I feel the same way when Hollywood remakes (a.k.a. ruins) a foreign film/show/anime. I honestly dread this trend of western remakes of beloved anime.
The point Woke wants you to believe is that you can only feel validated as a human being is if you see someone that you think looks like you in a movie or TV show.
That is exactly what I feel. People outside the USA watch Hollywood movies to see "American" stories. It's very colonial of these "Equity" types to say that they have a duty to show other people's cultures (actually their own interpretation of other people's culture). What I want to see in my local theatre, is more movies from other countries than Hollywood (and yes, it's not even American movies, Hollywood is its own thing now that does not even represent the USA anymore, let alone anyone else). That is what I want for diversity. Not Hollywood's version of diversity which boils down to showing lesbian women of various pigmentation. I want different worldviews, and that won't be represented by Hollywood, but by seeing movies from different countries made by people with different worldviews.

There is nothing inherently wrong with having a female be a lead in anything, some of the best stories have a woman as the main character. The problem with most films/shows these days is that they go about it in the worst way possible. Instead of making a great character that is strong who just so happens to be a woman, they instead do their absolute best to make the story all about her and nothing else to the point of madness. Not taking any risks, protecting the lead from any sort of serious injury/consequence. And instead of focusing on the concept for the plot and a cool story, they focus on the message of "empowerment" and "diversity." They want to check boxes, not create something meaningful and artistic. In the process of doing that they lose themselves in that whole idea of diversity and wanting to flaunt it like an achievement, and the entire story goes into the shitter. Making the character come off as just unlikable or unrelatable, in the pursuit of pleasing one specific demographic they neglect everything else that makes a character a character...or a story a story.
Spoilers for anyone who has not watched these shows/movies
Mizu from Blue Samurai is a perfect example of a female lead that fits right into the narrative it's trying to tell, it also manages to strike that perfect balance of having her be an extremely capable fighter who can kick ass but not someone who is invincible at all times. She gets her shit wrecked quite a few times, and doesn't just over power every opponent she fights. A lot of the time she has to outsmart or outmaneuver them in order to win, which makes the fights way more engaging and tense. She's also a flawed character who makes a ton of questionable choices, and characters don't shy away from calling out the mistakes she makes through the narrative.
Vi from Arcane is another example, that shows honestly a masterclass in many things but having good lead is defiantly one of it's strong points. She's strong, but not overpowered and gets beaten a few times in the first season. She also has a lot of flaws and doesn't handle certain situations well...like THAT event in the third episode with her sister, but it is all balanced out with her good qualities, such as her loyalty and loving heart beneath her tough exterior. Which makes her an incredibly dynamic character to follow, and not just a typical tough girl character. I can honestly keep going: Ripley from Alien, Sarah Connor from Terminator 1 and 2, Clare from Claymore (super underrated tbh), Alita from Alita Battle Angel (the manga, haven't seen the film), Bayonetta, Wonder Woman from the 2017 film and the Animated series universe. I can keep going but I'd be here all day lol. It's just a damn shame we don't have writers who priorities a well written character first, gender second...because it's this toxic mentality of forced agendas that has lead to this drought of creativity we are witnessing today.

If you haven’t read the manga I highly recommend giving it a read, it’s beautifully drawn and the writing is stellar too. It’s things like these tho which really spark my creative side, and really push me to complete writing my story which I’ve been working on for god knows how long tbh with you…just so we can have actual narratives that don’t depend on cheap gimmicks and can actually have a beginning. A middle. And an ending. Instead of just being milked to death, or diverge into a multiverse with no substance. Or an Agenda filled mess with quote on quote “strong female characters.”

Black Widow was a movie I had looked forward to. I wanted to see her in a smart spy thriller. Definitely not what we got.

The writer/director on _Black Widow_ proved she was a complete idiot when she said she couldn't figure out how to work Taskmaster into the story as someone who would work for Dreykov. That's why the character ended up being his daughter. In the comics Taskmaster is a mercenary; he'll work for _anyone_ who pays him. The Avengers have even hired him to help train teenagers with superpowers!
Also the line "The only natural resource this world has too much of...GIRLS" is so unbelievably cringey I can't believe it made into the movie.

I actually liked the Black Widow movie she played her part very well...she wasn't a hard faced tomboy who thought she had no faults.
I was constantly waiting for Carol to get her just desserts for her actions. She currently has a larger body count than Thanos. And we’re expected to worship her as a hero. Iron Man started as a selfish character and grew. Carol is nothing but selfish and she has not changed or been humbled. Only affirmed that everything she has done is okay in long run.
One of my favorite villains on the MCU was Cate Blanchett's very female Hela. I find her exceedingly more memorable than these cut-and-paste female "heroes" and for much better reason.

When Iron Fist came out, Disney (and its fanboys) were acting like it was the first movie to ever feature an Asian person. As a person with Chinese blood running through his veins and someone who has been watching Asian pop culture his whole life, that seriously angered me. These people were dismissing 100 years of Asian film making to prop up some crappy superhero movie.
I even had someone tell me that no modern kid will want to watch a Bruce Lee movie because those movies are too old. I was born 13 years after Bruce died and I loved his films when I first saw them in the early 90s. I'm not going to call that person racist for saying something so stupid, but I will say that people like that are incredibly ignorant and disrespectful.

I think something Hollywood is really failing to understand when they do interviews where actors do nothing but speak about their gender and ethnicity, is that at the end of the day, all the actor has said is this movie exists, I also exist (and we already knew they were in the movie). The key problem with that is that we already knew the movie existed, and we DON'T CARE that a random person we don't know exists, not because of gender or ethnicity, but because moviestars just aren't a thing anymore (and thank god for that).
There's a select few actors left whose fame has lasted from that era, but does anyone really go to see a movie they know nothing about (and I mean nothing) just because a specific actor is in it? People definitely used to, but that's nowhere near close to that level now. We don't care about the actors. They are boring people in real life because 99% of people on the planet are boring in real life. We care about the MOVIE. You know, the non-boring place we go to in order to escape real life? Yep, what Disney did with the Marvel Universe films by handing it over to people who never understood how the franchise had become so successful can be liked to all those producers who tried to emulate the success of Star Wars in 1977 by making films that only had 'strange creatures', 'spaceships', and 'explosions' in them as if these things were the great secret of success. Forget story, characterisation, quality of SFX, editing panache, directorial vision etc. and just bundle together what appear (to simpletons) to be the key elements. Those behind the M-She-U saw only superheroes, big firework-like displays of special effects and thought they could just repeat the same things with women in the key roles - with no thought to character, plot, or understanding of audience.
The paradox that marvel films were far more entertaining and appreciated by a much wider audience when they didn’t give a damn about representation. And far far more lucrative financially. Quite the paradox.

I will make a distinction with Kate Bishop. That's a good character, that not only has a personality and likeability, but also is a fan of the character that she is going to replace. Seeing her following Clint around like a lost puppy made perfect sense.
Agreed, Kate’s the only one I feel can properly take up the mantle. Plus I also liked that she was willing to turn her mom over to the police for committing crimes instead of pardoning her like you usually see now.
I agree, Kate was relatable and likable and respected an already great character.
I'd say Kate and Yelena both felt likeable to me, out of the new characters, they were the only ones I liked. The rest all were the same, and not in a good way, because they all sucked and were bland.
Yeah and it's thoroughly established that Kate straight up would have died on multiple occasions without Hawkeye helping her. Plus, the show gets to have its cake and eat it too because they also have Yelena, and given that we know Yelena received the same training as Black Widow, it's not at all a surprise when she displays a similar level of fighting skill, so the show gets to have a badass female lead to hit Disney's quota.
And when she just strolls onto the screen and says she's going to kill Hawkeye, instead of scratching our heads and thinking "and how the hell are you going to do that?" we instantly instead think "hold up why does she want to kill Hawkeye?" Because we know with her training, killing Clint is something she can feasibly do. So we're asking questions about why the characters are doing what they do, not asking questions in an attempt to reassemble our suspense of disbelief after it's just been shattered. The complete reverse of this is when we see Thanos unable to even scratch Captain Marvel unless he uses an Infinity Stone, therefore Captain Marvel's mere existence means Thanos should have been taken out decades before Infinity War. His army couldn't save him since we've seen Captain Marvel tear through spaceships (including Thanos') on multiple occasions. We know Thanos was active in pursuing his 50% population cull even before he had the stones (it's how he met Gamora, we literally see this), therefore he wasn't hiding. Therefore she could have found him. So the only logical reason for her not to kill him ages ago is because she couldn't... but he couldn't even scratch her, and suspense of disbelief shatters. She either needs to be weaker than Thanos or she needs a genuine reason to let him continue his repeated genocides. But we know she's stronger, AND she's portrayed as a hero. So what the hell? It just, doesn't, work.
So the power scaling breaks the story. Captain Marvel's mere existence instantly makes literally everything around her make less sense because she's too strong not to solve every problem in two seconds. She's basically Superman with no weakness. And notice something interesting? NONE of the criticism I just levelled at Captain Marvel and NONE of the praise I gave Kate Bishop or Yelena have ANYTHING to do with their gender.

Marvel is trying to cater to an audience that isn't interested in them. Yes, there are female fans but for the most part Marvel, DC and the suoerhero genre as a whole caters to men. Barbie was successful because of its Bait & Switch but also because it catered exclusively to a female audience. We like action and spectacle, they like drama and romance.

Marvel *is* trying to reach men, to program them into grovelling to and worshipping women without expecting any gratitude or reward. There is now basically just one remaining old school movie star - Tom Cruise. The guy is as far away from my own way of thinking (very different religion etc.) but I love his movies for a very simple reason. He actually likes entertaining people and doesn't try to exclude others and put his own personal ideas into the characters he plays. When he plays an action hero he plays a classic action hero not some guy lecturing us about wokeness or anything else. I would never know his beliefs and ideas at all if I just watched his movies or even his interviews (he is extremely careful to only ever talk about the movie on these promotional videos) and that's EXACTLY what I want from a movie star.
Is he alone though? Russell Crowe seems to be on the have his both feet in the ground as well. i loved Critical Drinker's interview of him concerning The Pope's Exorcist, which gave a a very untypical vibe I could only name as 'genuine'.

My major problem with the Black Widow movie, apart from the obvious, was how they establish how the black widows have no agency other than to serve the whims and will of a patriarchal figure and pretty much retcon Nats’ narrative arch that began with her making amends because of all the red in her ledger to saying she pretty much sacrificed a little girls life in order to murder this patriarchal figure, ignoring the fact that when she planned this hit she wasn’t under the influence of the patriarchal musk, but working alongside SHIELD and the story straight up ignores she knowingly killed a child and yet it’s not her fault, it’s the girls fathers fault for being a manipulative misogynist, and she gets a free pass for reasons. That’s the shit that gets to me. When a man does evil it’s his fault entirely, but when a woman does evil it isn’t her fault, she was just a victim of the patriarchy. I cannot condone that level of solipsistic thinking.
Imagine if Tony had never self destructed his millions of dollars & dozens of hours worth of preparation for Thanos for 0 reason at the end of Iron Man 3. & instead of Carol coming in to save the day, you see the iron legion come in. Like the moment they did in iron man 3 but much 10 times grander cause Tony’s done a lot of work on it since IM3. Would have been such an epic edition to the battle

Yeah, it's unfortunate cause there are a couple of the new female characters who I genuinely like (Iman, Kate Bishop, and Yelena) but sadly they're overshadowed by the rest of the subpar characters that Marvel/Disney has been trying to push

Natasha is a better character than Carol. More relatable.
15:53 Black Widow and Hawkeye are great for the same reasons Batman is great: They are humans among Gods.
And they are still needed, required and useful.
Weaknesses make you stronger, even more is you overcome those weaknesses while still have them.
Captain Marvel have no weakness, so there is nothing to overcome.
From the very first avengers movie, I was very much looking forward to a black widow movie where they finally explained what happened with her and Hawkeye in Budapest. That movie at that time would have done insanely well.
I'm truly amazed how well the MCU's fall parallels the issues in their comics 10-15 years earlier.
Any sane person would see how Marvel Comics has absolutely nosedived in quality and sales and know that it is not something to emulate in a cinematic universe. And yet, Disney and Kevin Feige think it is a good idea to drop a quarter of a billion dollars on every failed character who couldn't even sell 20k issues a month and/or keep a series going past 12 issues.
At an accelerated rate too. Not like they had blueprints and hindsights explaining in detail the shortcomings of characters like the New/Young Avengers, Kamala Kahn, Ironheart, Ironlad, Wiccan, Hulkling, Amadeus Cho, Captain Marvel, Silk, Lady Thor, etc.
They had a decade and a half of notes and they ignored all of it. It should be no real surprise they're crashing and burning now.
It wasn't that long ago. Marvel Comics' quality nosedived in 2015 with they did their "All New, All Different Marvel" initiative. At that time DC was killing it with "Rebirth"...so naturally they decided to push diversity and inclusion with "Infinite Frontier" and killed the remaining interest of a whole bunch of fans.
I've heard that Ms. Marvel's actor, whatever her name is, wasn't that much of an elitist, self-absorbed snob like, say, Brie Larson. Apparently she was generally liked by those who watched her show. I think it's telling that she starts her response regarding representation by saying at first she didn't see the big deal, but then [blah, blah, blah].
Assuming she's actually a nice person I wouldn't be surprised if pushing the _The Message_ wasn't that important to her, but that she was coached by Disney, etc. to say these things to help maintain the narrative tour. At least I'd like to hope so, and hold on to that dying spark of positivity when it comes to modern media and their mostly narcissistic population.

I watched almost all of the first 3 phases in the MCU in theater. I did see quite a few women: 1) with their dates (husbands, boyfriends, etc) and 2) with their sons (often chaperoning a group of preteen boys). Not once did I see a "group" of women enter any theater. At any given viewing I would guess the audience of all the ones I attended to be about 65% male.
"I felt seen. Like, right down to my core".
That, young lady, is a pap smear.
Can we get back to movie entertainment now?

Maybe im weird, but I've never identified with a character, especially not for race or sex, I never looked at tony stark and said "an alcoholic, genius, playboy, billionaire, narcissist, with a metal super suit!!! Just like me!
Of course not, because the whole point of fiction is to whiteness stories that aren't your own. That's the whole point of it lol. Why would you want to hear stories about your own experiences or reality. It would bore the crap out of you

I loved Jan and Carol from Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Jan is one of my favorite characters from the show, actually. And that's because of who she is. She is a phenomenal character who understands her limits and never puts people down to make herself look good. Same with Carol. Yeah, she's a bit of a hot-head, but several tones throughout the show you see her feeling like she doesn't feel she is good enough to be an Avenger. She has humility and, again, she doesn't act better than other people.
The same can be said for Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl from Justice League, Starfire and Raven from Justice League, even Jean Grey and Storm from X-Men Evolution. It's not about gender or race, it's about being a good, relatable character.
I always wanted the Black Widow film to be more around her and Hawkey in Budapest.
How many millions were lost with the making of this movie? 100? 200? 250? So VERY stunning!! So brave!! HERSTORY made, before our very eyes! (well, those who saw it, which doesn't include me)
How many thousands of poor, sick or homeless women could that money have helped, if it hadn't been spent on a pointless piece of entertainment which entertained no one?

I agree except Yelena and Kate.
Kate messes up a lot - hell, her 1st scene was a screw up since she destroyed the tower clock - with which Hawkeye helped her, she's not OP and she can acknowledge her mistakes (e.g. apologizing to Jack). And Yelena is basically more funnier Natasha and also messes up and isn't OP.
That's a huge difference in comparison with all powerful, rude, obnoxious, arrogant and never wrong Captain Marvel, Shuri or Riri.
Also the Black Widow movie sucked because it was basically a worse copy of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
The MSheU is a failure. Not because of the transition from male stars to women, but because the studio has transitioned from giving us good movies to watch to ticking the diversity boxes and vomiting out new product without making... actually good movies

In his book “The Better Angels of Our Nature”, Steven Pinker discusses how fiction helped to expand the circle of empathy amongst people after the advent of mass literacy, particularly with regards to race, as one could imagine themselves in the shoes of a fictional character. It’s depressingly interesting to see how this has been turned on its head and the circle of empathy is being deliberately contracted by those who work in producing today’s popular fiction. It stands to reason that narcissism is at the root of “de-empathisation”.
Movie actors of today arent REAL actors. Youll find them on Broadway, on any theatre where they perform the same 1000+ lines over and over for decade without being on TV and showing off their jupiter sized egos, Theatre actor/actoresses are the real deal.
Your primary focus should be changing yourself as close as possible to the person you are portraying in the film, screenplay as close as possible.

Oddly enough, I do not need a character that is my EXACT body type, gender, religion, socioeconomic background and sexual orientation to feel engaged in a story. In fact I'm ALREADY ME so I don't really need stories about that, I come to art in various forms to experience things OUTSIDE of myself. Now try explaining this to a corporation getting DEI money. It's almost like their goal is the MONEY. Weird, huh?
