It’s ironic how this phase should’ve been entirely about dealing with the consequences and aftermath of Endgame, and yet only 3 projects (if that) out of the entire phase actually took it seriously. I've heard that Wanda was actually supposed to become evil AT THE END of Multiverse of Madness so that she would be the full antagonist for a future avengers film, but then disney came in and told the writers to change it and speed up her arc. This actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it because it did feel like a lot about the film was rewritten haphazardly, espcially considering that it expected viewers to have seen Wandavision in order to understand it. Her whole arc just feels wasted now, because she's now buried under a pile of rubble with no real closure.

Something I feel people don’t really talk about with regards to phase 4 is how truly atrocious the pacing was. Almost every film had really bad pacing and I couldn’t figure out why.
They generally had an introduction that moved at breakneck speed to get to the inciting incident, a snail-speed slow middle with little to no rising action that just casually stepped into the climax and a resolution that was not given the time it needed to breathe.
Thor: Love and Thunder had the worst pacing imo, but Dr. Strange and Spider-Man both suffered from it as well.

God, I feel that. I used to be excited for every new installment of the MCU. Wanted new characters to get their chance to shine. Now? I'm afraid of every movie that comes out. I fear all they'll do is ruin the characters or make the film have a political agenda. X-Men and Fantastic 4 are coming soon. Adam Warlock, and perhaps Silver Surfer too. And I'm not excited. I'm terrified.
Watching Disney do this to people's childhoods, it's infuriating. I know these characters are not my own. I know I don't own Marvel or DC or Star Wars. But I consume it. Shouldn't a fan have a say in how it's portrayed? Ticket sales and reviews should be the measure of a film or character's success, not identity politics. The film or comic or whatever should live or die by the sword of the audience.

I feel like of all the phase 4 stuff, the things I liked the most were strongly character driven. Spider-Man didn't have a particularly strong screenwriting, but it examined the character of Peter Parker by asking what makes him Spider-Man. Wakanda Forever dove deeply into T'Challa's legacy and how everyone his life touched fits into that now that he's gone. WandaVision was an exploration of Wanda's complex morality and Vision's identity. Loki was a self-reflection of the god of mischief by giving us a variant (or 2) of him that actually escape the TVA's destiny for them. She-Hulk has no overarching narrative or character study. Black Widow is the same character we've already gotten to know, so she doesn't have much of a journey to undergo. None of the Eternals were given nearly enough time to prove why they matter individually. The greatest power that fiction has is the ability to let us examine the human condition during unrealistic or absurd conflicts. If the story or setting itself is not interesting enough to earn the audience's engagement, then it should at least try to use character to drive interest.

I'll always remember the ending for Loki having me excited for the next few projects thinking that Kang might turn up to randomly screw up someones solo movies but since then we've had nothing till Ant-Man coming up in March.
Same again with Dr Strange and Spider-man. We were led to believe we were getting some intertwined multiverse arc in phase 4 but they've done nothing with it.
Think how much more sense the incident between Peter and Dr Strange would make if halfway through his spell to make people forget Peters identity that he had some vision of Kang and the future and that's what made him break his concentration.

Then in Spider-Man, strange just randomly happens to know that the multiverse exists out of nowhere. This isn't explained. Then the memory spell is used a plot device (the reasons for that being cast and it going wrong are incredibly stupid). And idiots that defend the wokeness respond with, "they always were." Funnily enough, the idiots are right. But only to a degree. Comics were always political, but not every comic was propaganda. Some comics can do political or social themes using metaphors brilliantly. IMO Endgame was pretty bad. Although there were things I enjoyed like Tony's and Nebula's arcs , a lot of it left me disappointed:
      1. Introducing time travel so late into the series shattered the already fragile MCU worldbuilding. Why worry about anything if time travel is this accessible?
      2. I get the thematic beauty of Steve learning to live the life, but its execution ruined the idea.

Endgame was one of the best MCU films alongside infinity war so what you have just said comes off as incredibly ignorant and pretentious.

One of my issues with Phase 4 is the lack of narrative direction. Phase 1 was all about establishing the world of the MCU and building to the forming of the Avengers, Phase 2 was about setting up the Infinity Stones and delving further into the Avengers personal stories, Phase 3 was about the buildup to Thanos and the Infinity War. In each phase, there was a clear event being established and worked towards. Phase 4 has done a lot of filling in the map of the expanded universe and adding more characters, but there hasn’t been any discernible purpose for this beyond “make more money”.

Mauler's video on multiverse of madness made me realize all the different ways this movie's plot actually fucks itself. These are some off the top of my head:
    1. How does Wanda send demons to attack America through multiple universes when multiversal travel is only something America can do? Say one of the monsters got hold of her. How would it bring her to the universe Wanda is in?
    2. Wanda staying in another universe for decades has a real chance to cause that entire universe to implode. That seems like something that should have been brought up to her.
    3. How does America manage to use her powers while being chained by the anti-magic sand things? This is important cus if she didnt escape then Wanda wouldve caught up to her and sucked her power out easily.
    4. The woman who sacrifices herself destroying the darkhold doesnt think of trying to set Wong free. If he had escaped, Wanda would have no way of knowing about the darkhold temple.
    5. Why does Wanda send Strange and Christine to another universe using America instead of just killing them? Strange especially could still be a threat even in another universe.
    6. Wanda takes FOREVER to drain America of her power once she finally has her in the temple. Strange and Christine fuck around in another universe for ages and she still keeps going. It should have taken mere seconds considering the Strange originally defending America decided to start draining her while keeping one of Wanda's demons busy with his other hand.
    7. America now has the power to locate any person she knows while they are in a separate universe as well as travel to that universe, as she did with Strange and Christine in the end. Why the fuck cant she do that to find her parents?
    8. America staying in this universe risks an incursion being caused. Brilliant.
Also I gotta say the way this movie introduced us to America is a bit bizarre. We dont know where her powers came from, we dont know why there only exists one version of her in the multiverse, we dont know how she knows that someone draining her power would kill her. It's like they just threw her into the story and hoped we'd just buy everything about her.

No Way Home was the only good movie in Phase 4 of the MCU. And it'll be a curse as well. It had all the fanservice. It had Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland meeting up with each other. But it also had a sense of closure and rewatchability for the Raimi and Webb movies. It benefitted Garfield especially.
In Multiverse of Madness, Professor X says "Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn't mean they're lost forever". It's told to Doctor Strange but it feels hollow compared to No Way Home. It feels more like something that was put in there so fans would be happy that they requoted a line.
There's rumours going around already that Avengers Secret Wars will have a finale that brings in not only Maguire and Garfield, but every iteration of the X-Men and Fantastic Four.
If this is true, and considering the fact that Disney bought 20th Century Fox and Sony changed their deal, it probably is, then Marvel is openly admitting that they're focusing on nostalgic fanservice over storytelling.

      @RamsTheNameCom2.0 Год назад

If you read the comics, you would know why both of these were shit adaptations.
Moon Knight (for example) is suppose to be this tough guy in his youth who brutally killed innocent people and children for fun/money before getting betrayed by his mercenary partner "bushman" and dying.
After getting resurrected by Khonshu, Marc Spector seeks redemption for his past life and slowly goes insane from the guilt. In which every key aspect of his superhero career has to be flawless.
If say his Khonshu statue gets broken, the man gets a panic attack from it. Everything must be perfect.
Also Khonshu was never suppose to be real, just a near death hallucination that cause Marc Spector to become a better person in fear/faith of what Khonshu has gifted him.
And Marc Spector was never abused by his mother in the comics.
However Marc Spector as a teenager/young adult would beat up and abuse his Dad for being a "Pathetic loser".
If these projects had Netflix adaptations like Daredevil, you'll probably see why even Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night were Bad Marvel Comic film adaptations.

Out of all the reason to say that Moon Knight wasn't a faithful adaptation you missed it on almost every case. 3. Khonshu has never been said to be real or not it depends on the writer if he is and it really goes back and forth 24/7 4. In recent runs (Lemir, Bemdis, etc.) MK has a lot more tragic of a backstory and it is stated his DID is due to abuse at a young age and with that he never really was fond of hurting innocent people just did because he needed a leader which Khonshu then filled

@@irishhotshot6765 Moon Knight's backstory of having his mental illness solely being revolved around his PTSD trauma of killing innocent people during his mercenary days, has always remained canon up until the 2014 Moon Knight run which changed it to "Khonshu being inside his head just gave him brain damaged".
(It was still canon that he wasn't mentally ill until he met Khonshu).
Even in the 2011 Bendis Moon Knight run that gave him DID inspired by the non canon Ultimate Spiderman comics that Bendis also wrote in 2005 (he invented Moon Knight having DID), Moon Knight's mental health issues were still canon as being related to his PTSD from his mercenary days. Bendis didn't know shit about DID.
But it later came back as canon in the Jed Mackay 2021 Moon Knight run as a combination of PTSD from his past of killing and brain damage from Khonshu.
A combination of both Doug Moench 80's canon and Warren Ellis 2014 canon.
(To later be retcon by Jed Mackay a Graphic Novel and 3/4 later, for MCU and comic book synergy. So his DID being related to child hood trauma came back).
The point is, MCU is ignoring almost 40 years of Moon Knight history in order to adapt a Moon Knight story inspired solely from the lore of two comic runs (Jeff Lemire & Max Bemis).
Jeff Lemire 2016 being a polarized Moon Knight run that die hard fans hate because it ruins the whole point of Moon Knight (It's called "All New and All Different" for a reason).
And the Max Bemis 2018 Moon Knight run just being the comic run that everyone hates in general.
Also in interviews, the writer and show runner for the MCU show admits to hating the character and his villains.
He only wanted to make a Moon Knight show for "mental health representation" and that's all.
If Moon Knight didn't have the Jeff Lemire run, the showrunner and people at Marvel Studios would not
be interested in adapting the character.
They only wanted to make a Moon Knight show to virtual signal about Mental Health issues, for a character who's PUNISHMENT is meant to be his mental health issues.
You're suppose to want to see Marc Spector suffer from mental health issues and "laugh at it" because he deserved it. It's kinda like a "Christmas Carol" situation, you see Ebenezer Scrooge as a bad person and you want to see him suffer mentally until he becomes a better person.
If they truly wanted to tell a Mental Health representation story..... just make a Hulk movie or show.
He was always meant to have DID and was abused by his dad as a child every since the 70's comic canon.
      It would have been perfect.

Then they threw away all that development, VISION BEING BACK, consequences for Wanda, just threw it out of the window. Doctor Strange 2 was ruined purely because it slapped Wanda into it without actually considering how she would actually behave after what she did, let alone why. Honestly, they needed to remove her or limit her presence so that we can focus on the titular character. Yikes that film was bad. Visually stunning at times, but bad.
Thor love and thunder was the only film I looked forward to. Lady Thor has SO MUCH POTENTIAL!! Natalie Portman looked stunning and was fun to watch with him, but the film itself was sooooo messy. I really enjoyed Hawkeye, it was surprisingly entertaining. And it has nice Christmas vibes, which is a huge plus. I might rewatch it just for that during the holidays. And was a respectful sendoff for Clint and nice introduction of his heir.
I would've swapped the Eternals and Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Make FatWS the 2 hour long movie cos it didn't have as much story behind it to not feel like padding, and Eternals the six hour long series so we get to know these dozen new characters and their struggle with eternal life and everything.
Overall this whole phase feel like a transition between the whole Infinity Stones saga to the next, multiverse/Kang saga. And introducing new characters who can carry the torch onwards.
PS: I feel like the MCU needs to make a new 'Avengers' like starting point with the new heroes. Because if a new viewer tries to jump in and you say if they want to know what's up, they have to watch all the 10 years worth of movies, that'll scare them away. There needs to be a new entry point, with maybe a short summary video on D+ of the past movies and series. (And I feel like they're doing that, with Khamala, Kate Bishop, Cassie Lang, etc.)

Great idea as well about swapping the falcon and eternals. Never occurred to me but you absolutely nailed it.
Finally I don’t think the mcu had an issue establishing a new avengers kicking off point, but instead they tried to kick off multiple avenger like stories and made the whole thing bloated. Not only did you have new avengers like shang-chi, but they were also introducing a young avengers cast & the thunderbolts. I also suspect that they we’re setting up an disney plus group since some of those characters seemed a bit too small or similar to the main avengers group - not to mention how many avengers there currently are there already. Think it’s going to be one of the main problems moving forward, too much going on for the casual viewer and may out them off.

Seeing she did actually start as a villain, sure, but where Rogue never went back on it, Wanda seems like the go to when they have no other villain for their grandiose story plan. WandaVision gets a lot of MCU props when it's just a retread of a very old Wanda and the Vision miniseries plot run back in the 80s and the subsequent removal of plot elements after the writer left them (a.k.a. the kids were determined a figment of Wanda's imagination only because next writers didn't want to deal with them/didn't like them). Thanks for such fair and fresh takes on the current state of the MCU. Too many youtubers have so many agendas motivating their anti-agenda rhetoric. In the end of the day, this is fiction based off of Ultra-Fiction: Comic Books.
    Great Video!

The Phase 4 shows are a mixed bag. Moon Knight and Loki have to be the best ones, the others are just mediocre or bad, like What If…?

Addition of Disney plus is the root cause of all the problems phase 4 has. Disney basically forced Marvel or Kevin to churn out content for their platform and led them to lose focus. They should only focus on the movies and focus on producing the best content otherwise they will fail.
I still have faith in the MCU. I have convinced myself that this phase is like filler content we see in anime and real stuff is yet to come we just have to endure it.

great vid, this really nailed down why I've been feeling increasingly burnt out with the MCU over phase 4. While I did enjoy some of the movies/series after a while keeping up with them started to feel like homework, like "guess I gotta watch this to follow what's going on in the next movie" or whatever. I watched Hawkeye and Ms Marvel and both had occasional enjoyable moments but tbh now I can barely remember a thing that happened in them. And then we got to She Hulk and I just felt straight up insulted by the ending lol, I think that was finally what made me go 'okay I'm done', no more watching mediocre shows out of loyalty/obligation. I agree that there's a massive quantity over quality issue, but given that the MCU is basically too big to fail idk how likely that is to change at this point.

Three of the biggest problems is that everything is a part of a big storyline, they keep trying to build on the MCU, and it's all connected. They had a really hard time beating what they did with Thanos, but they also are very frantic to make things bigger and more complicated. On top of that, since it's one big story, they are forced to build upon the messes they made in phase five, which means, while it could get better, it's probably lost. Almost none of what they're doing is working, and the old films are undeniably BETTER.

23:19 that’s exactly one of the problems the MCU is facing as well. The fans are just desperately looking for a big move in the shows or movies that causes a reaction to all of the others. Like, GOTG Holidays felt unnecessary?? I personally enjoyed every second of it cause it enhanced the characters, gave u a hint of how will they be living in GOTG3. Hey, i agreed with almost all of u said here, and its actually a very interesting video, but not everything has to be a create a MASSIVE chain effect onto the other mcu projects. Sometimes is cool to have fun little stories that provide in-depth to characters we already know and love

Entirely agree with eternals. Not bad, but distinctly average. Not what I was hoping for a marvel project with rob stark and Jon snow

@@sosoadja7663 Truly ironic because most of their shows would’ve been better served by being movies.

Nah, the return of Trevor in Shang chi was actually set up YEARS ago in a MCU short. Him being there actually made sense.

Yeah IDK what this guy is talking about. However I do agree that phase 4 has been pretty garbage but I think it was Dr Strange 2 that really hurt this phase going forward.
