    #SheHulk #Deadpool #4thWall
Now another Marvel character who’s known for 4th wall breaking is the murk with a mouth, Deadpool. But what if I told you that he wasn’t the first? [clip, Deadpool gasping.]
That’s right, She-Hulk was breaking the 4th wall before the character of Deadpool was even created.
Now had you asked me a few years ago if the MCU’s She-Hulk would break the 4th wall, I would have said I really doubt it. With the MCU being a “realistic” interconnected universe that’s been going for over 10 years now. Having a character all of a sudden reference the fact that they’re all in a movie or tv show would seem very out of place.
Infact, when it was confirmed that Deadpool would be joining the MCU. We speculated that other characters would just view his 4th wall breaking as a symptom of his insanity.
But now that She-Hulk is breaking the 4th wall within the MCU. We have a lot of questions as to how exactly this works in-universe.
Our first question is, did she gain the “ability” to break the 4th wall after getting her Hulk powers? In episode one of her new series it is revealed that Jen is even more equipped to handle the powers of the Hulk than her cousin Bruce. [clip, Bruce explaining her blood.]
So maybe she’s accessed a power that Bruce never could. The power of interdimensional awareness. The power to see us, the audience. [clip, Ultron hears the Watcher.]
In this scene when Jen breaks the 4th wall. [clip, he doesn't mean that.]
Hulk seems to slightly overhear Jen talking to the audience. And when that happens, Jen seems a little surprised that he heard her.
Maybe the reason Hulk was able to slightly hear her is because he’s a Hulk. And while he doesn’t have the 4th wall breaking ability fully unlocked like Jen does. He’s still more in tune than your average person.
Doug: But isn’t 4th wall breaking just a form of storytelling? Not necessarily part of the story's canon?
That’s a good point and actually brings us into our second question. Could She-Hulk’s breaking of the 4th wall just be a storytelling device? Meaning that isn’t actually happening in the MCU’s canon.
Which would mean that all those moments when She-Hulk is stopping to talk to us, the viewer. Those moments aren't actually happening, it’s just a comedic representation of Jen’s inner monologue.
For decades 4th wall breaking has been used in books, plays, television, and film to help tell the story at hand. When we see characters address the audience, we understand that it’s not actually part of the story. It’s merely a tool used to help the audience better understand the motives of the character they’re following.
Take Frank Underwood from House of Cards for example.
Doug: Yikes… Out of all the examples you could’ve picked. Shame on you.
I know, I know, but it’s a really good example.

This is an indication that this is the first time she's broken the 4th wall, and she's surprised that she can do that. Chronologically, this take place before her 4th wall break in the office, because this is a flashback from that office 4th wall break.

The double-take I think is 100% her surprise that she can do it, so I'd say a new ability after becoming a Hulk and not a storytelling device. That doesn't mean to say they won't be vague about it and change it in future appearances though.

Beyond that, if it was just an inner monologue, why did she have to duck back into the office to break the 4th wall? Hulk reacting means it’s LEGIT happening in-universe and others are aware when she does it, so she tries to be alone so as not to look crazy.

@@Rebelphoenix Thank you. I was JUST about to comment on that one. People that just watch the movies often try to tell themselves he's actually just a little nutty because he's just that kind of person. But no, as you point out (and is made VERY clear in the comics) Deadpool is most definitely insane. And he kinda HAS to be, considering what makes him completely (more or less) immune to espers, leading him to warning one guy not to even TRY to read his mind, and when that esper ignores the warning, they pay the price.
After all, anyone who has extremely malignant brain cancer CONSTANTLY tearing his brain tissue apart, while his healing factor (which is actually FAR faster than we ever see, because of how much of it is CONSTANTLY rebuilding his body, making traumatic injury a second or third-string priority) is healing/rebuilding that brain tissue. I have always kinda wished they'd have introduced the two extra voices in his head after his X-factor activation, to start getting it across to people that he really IS insane, but I think they (20th Century Fox) didn't want to delve that deeply into his actual insanity.

Imagine She-Hulk be like, "What Fourth Wall?"

  • @Swenglish
    @Swenglish Год назад +45

In the comics, She-Hulk's fourth wall breaking was introduced as essentially a superpower. An extension of her heightened state of consciousness, that allowed her (under the tutelage of the former Blonde Phantom) to do things that would be impossible for most people.
When Deadpool's fourth wall breaking was introduced, it was essentially a form of derealization-depersonalization. A coping mechanism. Wade convincing himself his life is imaginary ("None of this is actually happening. There is a man. At a typewriter. This is all his twisted imagination.", a line from the comics I wish had been included in the movie, while he was going through the experiment) in order to endure the pain of it. And because it literally was a comic book, it became ambiguous.
I for one would like to see the MCU maintain that distinction. She-Hulk has heightened consciousness, whereas Deadpool might just have depersonalization-derealization disorder.

It recently came out that the flashback part of this first episode was intended to be shown in episode 8, but the producers decided to change the order to not delay the origin story too much for the fans. Now, when Jen first breaks the fourth wall, she literally acknowledges that the fans might not get into this "lawyer show" until they see her origin story. So I think they used that fourth wall breaking moment to address the last minute changes they had to do.

After seeing the first episode my interpretation was that being a Hulk brings something emotional forward that normally is buried deep within. Perhaps her inner monologue is always coming out in Hulk form, the turning away seems natural when saying something sarcastic in your mind. It could than be framed specifically to match her comic 4th wall break.
For me the Hulk bringing out something deep within could also explain why both hulks are different.
Jen might be face her fears by taking control, stand tall and dresses to impress and to boast her confidence. Thus a physical boast.
While Bruce might imagine himself as someone without those fears or when in fear he find is difficult to rationalize. That hulking also brings that side out.

My absolute favorite scenes with the breaking of the fourth wall are from the sitcom 'Til Death with Brad Garrett. The show was filmed in front of a live audience and the friend of their daughter at one time becomes aware of that and also of the fact that they're acting in a facade and not a real room, staring out the 'window' and seeing cameramen and people from the staff. Telling that to the others they just don't take him serious. That was hillarious when I first saw it many years ago.

My thinking is that she has her own "Other Guy" that is almost completely sublimated. Due to her more developed and healthy ego, she is aware of this presence but is unable to view it as a separate existence. This is possibly just her inner monologue actually leaking out into the world of the show, addressing "someone" that she is aware of, but only fleetingly enough that she processes the fact that "no one" is there pretty quickly.

I support this a lot... here is some why.
      1. In the comics, Bruce's 'other guy' existed before the radiation as a result of abuse from his father. The accident simply amplified the effect. Odds are good that Bruce's grandfather was also abusive... and perhaps Bruce's uncle experienced that abuse. Jennifer might have a different level and flavor of abuse in her background, but there is reason to believe they share these traits.
      2. The nature of their relationship also demonstrates a lot of abuse survivor traits... They are literally fighting for control and to save each other in the manner that abuse survivors are all too familiar with.
      3. Jennifer's alter is just too good... too in control... too 'fine'. She also swears it is going to be a "Lawyer show". She is in denial about a lot of stuff in this first episode... and part of that is denying her own 'other guy'.
While She-Hulk is a comedy, the MCU has shown it has to get in touch with some pain to make that point. I'm sure a lot of the drama is going to come from her realizing that she can't keep the super together guy in control all the time and that she will have to let the other guy drive. Maybe she will have to get in touch with her other guy to help Bruce on his journey.

Rather then to ‘God’ which could also reference One-Above-All. I’d argue it’s more likely that 4th wall breaks by both She-Hulk and Deadpool are ‘observing’ us the viewers on Earth-1218 in the MCU in a meta way.

4th wall break theory: The first 2 times she wakes up as Jennifer Walters, there is one specific blurry point of light. This felt oddly specific in two separate moments, one nighttime and one daytime.
This might be her first times sensing something outside 616. Could this be a video camera’s light or lens? (Or maybe a window to video chat with the Watcher?🤪) She seemed confused by her first official 4th wall break, but was very comfortable with it later.

I always felt like Loki ep 6's intro was showing our universe (where we are watching the Marvel films) existing alongside the MCU.
And I think Jen's power is that she's just more attuned to the multiverse to the point where another self (in a multiversal perspective like a Watcher) is able to exist in an awareness alongside hers. I doubt 616 Jen will gain access to this other awareness (too easy to create a runaway Gwenpool situation), but I could see the other her being able to "nudge" things (maybe even directly nudging those with a similar awareness like Bruce, Deadpool, Gwenpool, etc).
And no, I'm not holding out hope for Gwenpool in the MCU. But that would be a ride if it happened.

she hulk might one day mention off hand to someone during a conversation that 'someone is always watching', and they'd be like, what like some 'watcher?' but then she'd look at the 4th wall and mention how, it used to be one or two people actually, but now it feels like more. (because the MCU has more eyes' on it now than the comics ever did?).
on an unrelated note while writing this comment I thought it'd be neat to have ed norton appear in hulk's head space/banner's head space as the voice for the grey hulk or something.

I think She-Hulk breaking the 4th wall is a storytelling device but also an ability Jennifer/She-Hulk has to see through other dimensions, one being us the audience which she is subconsciously communicating with. It's a really cool nod to the comic book writers. I use to read the Hulk comics written by Peter David, he's an awesome writer.

I feel like He-Who-Remains didn't write the script he's following. If he did, he would know what comes after. Instead, I think he compiled his script by living the sacred timeline over and over again like Dr. Strange scanned the timeline for how to beat Thanos. He's not writing the script, he just has the needed events mapped out for him and he's just following along.

He Who Remains wasn't a God who wrote scripts and decided what every person would say or do. He just literally has seen all of time in his universe/timeline. I think the reason he could still have a script for Loki and Sylvie at the end is because it is not the first time that he let any Lokis reach him, which would explain the broken statue and why there are so many different Lokis in the Void at the end of time. He has probably done this an infinite amount times until 1: He found the perfect candidates, ie. Loki and Sylvie and 2: Until everything played out the way he wanted until he finally reached the precipice

so either she has gotten the ability to break the 4th wall or she talks to us, the gods of the MCU. my answer: YES!
what about the watcher? or the one above all? technically, she could be talking to them.
I believe it's a mix of everything - boring, right?
seriously though, inside the series, I think the writers/ directors intend it to be like an ability that allows her to control her rage in the HULK form. it's like a lightning rod - she isn't getting zapped by hulk-rage, because she has her inner monologue, that through her transformation into she-hulk is now the ability to break the 4th wall.
so inner monologue = 4th wall breaking ability. it's her constant self-reflection as a lawyer, a genius human, an intuitive smart person dialed to 11 that gives her the ability to swipe her rage to the side and gain control.
or, she is just nuts, but doesn't know it yet. crazy people don't know they're crazy, the believe everybody else is just not seeing their logic/ the truth.

honestly, I hope they have a scene in the show that's kind of a spin off of the time Peter Parker met the One Above All. cause in that comic, Peter is down bad and doesn't see a point in being a hero anymore. so TOAA shows Peter all the people he accidentally saves without trying. and I believe they kind of put the reader underneath this umbrella too, or at least it is implied. so I honestly see a moment where Jen is down on her luck trying to think of a point of it all. then when she looks to the fourth wall, it's revealed to be TOAA

I don't think those two break the same wall. Remember when Deadpool said, "who did I have to 'please' to get my own movie?" That didn't work on our side of the wall, there is no Deadpool and no Wolverine here. Jen, on the other hand, clearly addresses us when she talks about us not being able to focus without a backstory, or the comic panel where she complained to the writer. She is aware that she's a fictional character written by someone, but Deadpool is not. He thinks he's real and getting a movie made that is then shown in another universe is somehow part of reality.
But I can imagine a scene where Deadpool breaks the fourth wall, followed by Jen musing to us about how he hasn't realised there also are writers writing the story...

I don’t know exactly what it is, but they’re definitely making this part of the multiverse breaking down. After Loki there were a lot of Tik Toks where people noticed characters looking right at the camera. This could be written off, but it happened several times in that series in which the multiverse broke open and hadn’t happened before (besides Deadpool). Then right after that came out we had What If in which Ultron (as you talked about) see the Watcher. At the start of What If I thought they would reveal that we the audience are the watcher, and that didn’t exactly happen. But I do think the multiverse theory is the right direction.

I think it will be oftne used in her show and some mor funny movies where she will have a cameo (For example Ant-man 3 or GOTG 3) but will be very subtle in dramatic movie. After all when the empire strikes and the rebels escape again, C-3PO breaks the fourth wall to tell us that the humans not waiting for him and leaving him at the door is "Typical". And it's just a funny gag and doesn't take you off the movie or make the whole saga crumble. SO I think she could just give us a "Jim's look" or mumble something like "here we go again" (C-3PO style...in Return of the Jedi and in the original Star Wars when he complains about R2) looking at us. It can be done very organically
