This is a story that would have been
the perfect Avengers movie after Endgame. And it should have been the climactic event of Phase 4.
The reaction to Secret Invasion wasn’t great, for so many reasons. The biggest letdown, though, is how one of the coolest concepts from the comics was adopted.
Secret Invasion is one of the best crossover events in Marvel comics. And it’s a story fitting a big crossover event.
So we came up with how Secret Invasion should have been done in the MCU.
And Avengers 5 in phase 4 would have fixed so many things for the entire multiverse saga.
Alright, we all know that Secret Invasion was really disappointing, so I’m not going to pile on too much.
If you want to hear our thoughts on the show, watch our review that explains what went wrong.
Instead, let’s start by explaining why Secret Invasion needed to be an Avengers movie.
The comics version of Secret Invasion was about the Skrulls invading Earth. What makes it so unique is the reveal that Skrulls shapeshifted into many heroes. They infiltrated every team, as well as agencies like Shield.
But the really massive twist is that some heroes were replaced years before this event. Meaning that the Skrulls were pretending to be established heroes for a long time.
Doug: So that’s like Rhodey was a Skrull since Civil War, right?
Well, they tried to do this Skrulls twist with Rhodey in the show, but they messed it up. The reveal feels so empty and sloppy.
Anyway, the Skrulls were a huge threat, so all the Marvel heroes had to join forces and defeat them.
Secret Invasion was awesome, and it led to another great story that gave us supervillain teams like the Thunderbolts and the Dark Avengers.
A story that would have been a perfect fit for phase 5.
So you can see why Secret Invasion would have worked much better as an Avengers movie.
The MCU making a small-scale show that feels cheap and insignificant ultimately feels like such a waste of the fantastic story.
And there are some good adaptations of the story. The animated show Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes did the story really well. In fact, they did some things even better than the comics.
And Agents of Shield already made a much better version of Secret Invasion on television.
The fourth season deals with characters being replaced by imposters. Now while it’s robots and not Skrulls, the concept is the same.
There is that intense paranoia, characters we know and love might have been replaced. Take for example one of the best scenes of the season.
Fitz and Simmons - a couple who are in love - can’t trust each other because they believe the other might be an imposter.
This is exactly the kind of scene that would have saved Secret Invasion. This is the staple of the body snatcher concept.
This is pretty much non-existent in the MCU’s Secret Invasion. But we will have that in our version of the story.
Granted, doing a faithful adaption of Secret Invasion isn’t easy. Because there are a lot of characters, many of them are imposters, and it won’t be cheap.
But Secret Invasion cost over $200 million, that’s as much as most MCU movies.
Doug: This cost 200 million? They spent all that money on the Drax baby arm?
Well they basically filmed this show twice, instead of filming an Avengers movie once.
And this brings us to why we needed an Avenges movie in phase 4.
I understand why Marvel wants their Avengers movies to be these huge crossover events.
But by the point Avengers Kang Dynasty comes out, it will be 7 whole years since Endgame. 7 years!
This is the same time gap between the first Avengers and Endgame.
And it’s more than just the long wait, there’s a bigger problem.
We don’t know who the new Avengers even are. Is there even a team, or is it just an army of heroes now?
What is the dynamic between these heroes? Who’s the Tony of the saga, who’s the Steve? Can these heroes co-exist as a team in a world that lost half of the original Avengers?

Absolutely. That’s how Reed Richards could have formed a machine to identify skrull that the government would later use on mutants. PERFECT Avengers, given that the Super Skrull was one of the Fantastic Four villains.

Frankly Secret Invasion should have been Captain Marvel 2. Carol isn't very familiar with Earth's super heroes so her having to figure out who's a Skrull would have been more realistic especially with a budget that would have let them use more high profile characters. Plus her versus Super Skrull would have been more epic. Plus they could have back doored the Fantastic Four's origin with Gravik's machine. "The Marvels" should have been the plot of Ms Marvel season 2.

Korg's powers were there which will be rock skin and super strength. Goot's powers grants stretching ability. Invsibility can be finagled from almost any source. Since humans don't have the ability to shape-shift it would serve the reason that if powers were granted buy the machine the person would only be able to phenotypically express one. These Powers could secretly be hidden with the characters until they go visit Nick Fury in space and then the Van Allen belt could activates them. But what do I know?

Skrulls are boring
You came up with a better story than a bunch of Disney/Marvel writers did. Although I think almost anybody would have come up with a better plan than what they actually did.
This sounds soooo good. Definitely wish we’d gotten a secret invasion saga. There was so much potential that the show didn’t quite live up to!
What sucks is that it did a huge disservice to newer heroes such as Shang-Chi, Ms Marvel, Moon Knight, etc with the lack of an Avengers movie
Yeah it's really unfortunate because Shang-Chi was one of the better received projects post-Endgame, and he's not getting another movie until after Avengers: Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars. Sure the director of Shang-Chi will be busy directing the next Avengers movie, but Marvel is not following-up on Shang-Chi soon enough. Iron Man in contrast, had a lot more appearances in a short amount of time after he was introduced.
Why does everyone think every hero has to be an Avenger?
@@JDRamos213 Not every hero has to be an Avenger, but in the MCU, the Avengers movies are the connective tissue and the major events. The MCU makes most of the heroes Avengers.
Even Spider-Man and Black Panther are Avengers. And in the comics, Shang-Chi was also an Avenger as well as a member of quite a few other teams.

I think we'll see a lot more cross over stuff in phase 5, so, even though shang aint getting another movie for a while doesn't mean we won't see em for that entire time.
The other thing is, just like the previous commenter pointed out, not every character has to be an Avenger. They're absolutely setting up more team movies, but different teams. I can admit phase 4 wasn't the greatest but, I look at it like they're starting from scratch again with a slew of new heros. Comparing phase 4 to phase 3 ain't fair, ya gotta compare phase 4 to phase 1, but even that ain't a one to one.
I guess I'm just getting a bit tired of folk writing the mcu off as dead, when this new arc hasn't reeeaally gotten outta the gate yet. I'm sure by the end of phase 6 a lot of nay sayers will be eating their words.
I think it is a big error to treat the new Avengers as "the new Tony", "the new Steve", etc.
i think he just means who is going to fill the role of the leader/decision maker.
The new Avengers could never be Tony or Steve
he means "the new [character]" in a narrative sense. in the infinity saga, tony stark and steve rogers really were the 2 main characters. their comradarie, and later their conflict, is what tied the story threads together. of course, there were movies that had nothing to do with either of them (i.e the guardians and thor franchises) but they had their own individuals connections to the impending conflict (thanos for the guardians, the entire character of loki for thor) which ultimately led up to endgame, which is the finalization of rogers' and stark's character arcs.
Bilbo has a great line in The Lord of the Rings saying "Butter scraped over too much bread". I feel like that encapsulates Secret Invasion. A smaller story stretched over 6ish hours. Come to think of it, it describes The Hobbit film series as well. Peter Jackson should have been paying better attention.

I love this idea so much more than what they are currently doing. They got away from plotting out high points and focusing on character development in exchange for more content to milk their consumers. They could still adapt some of this idea to right the ship. Great job, Screen Crush.

Imo, secret invasion should've been a two film event with teases in 2-3 films prior in which one of them shows a skrull replacing one of our heroes like how captain America was replaced by a skrull in earth's mightiest heroes
For the new Avengers, I nominate:
1. Nasty Canasta
2. Patrick Star
3. Wayne Knight (leader)
4. Sonny the Coco Puffs bird
5. A guy named Bob
Getting the rights to all these characters may be difficult. Except for Bob, he's down for whatever.

This is literally such an epic story, Is way better than what we actually got.
See that's the biggest difference between hiring writers/directors that know and love and respect the comics. You don't need to copy what has been done but you need to know it well and why it is important to adapt the material correctly.
I have to say that I like this idea much more than what we actually received, as it doesn't end with one brand new character seemingly being all powerful and going off to work for another shady individual. And having it be an Avengers film at least gives off some hope that when Kang shows up to lay waste to all, that he'll at least be met with some measure of a challenge instead of just mowing down the Avengers like what we're probably going to get in The Kang Dynasty.
Let’s be honest, they’ll defeat him with the power of friendship and feeling like pieces of shit.

I think the only thing that would stop a Skrull invasion being a major event is how easy it is to find out who’s a Skrull. Once the first Skrull is found out, the Avengers or Shield would likely have an immediate test to verify actual humans vs skrulls from then-on.
I just bought the comic to read and the way they adapted it was tragic one of the best stories I’ve read in a while
What if they just use secret Invasion as a kickoff for the full story? Perhaps they will unfold more events and later movies and shows

It would have been to make this during the blip timeskip... which would allow room for the confusion because we wouldn't know who actually got blipped vs who was a skrull...

They could’ve kept most of their phase 4 slate with all the street level projects to lead up to avengers secret invasion, whilst still set up the multiverse on a smaller scale to be a big part of phase 5 and 6. This show should have been a nick fury show which would build to the avengers film, which it kinda did feel like set up

I do agree Secret Invasion should have been the closing movie for a phase (whatever phase), and developing the plot trhu said phase (letting us few, or most, characters are now Skrulls in different movies/tv shows).
But I also liked the Disney+ series. No, I didn't said it was perfect. I didn't said you should like it because I liked it. I only said I liked it.
Yes! Preach!! This is what I was expecting for the MCU. I’ve been saying for the past year that Marvels should be a show, and Secret Invasion should be a movie series. This is 100% what I wanted. I don’t even think the show runner read the comics.

Oh my god this is what I’ve been so awesome! they could’ve had a Civil War scene with the new avengers, fighting the OG‘s, not knowing if it’s their friends! imagine Sam and Bucky having to fight Steve, or T’Challa‘s Black Panther dressing down Shuri for killing their mom!
It didn’t need to be a movie. It just needed to be done well. Or at least started in a show and spilled over into the movies.
Pretty sure it was mentioned somewhere that Secret Invasion was supposed to be a feature length movie but "Certain high up execs" decreed it be made into a lower cost streaming series to PUSH the Disney+ service.
Cause we all know Execs ALWAYS have ONLY the best ideas to justify their out of touch salaries and such.
I love this idea because it makes sense. Just like phase 1, they were setting up the avengers and ended the phase with an avengers movie. I do believe that marvel has lost their way due to rushing things, putting out too much content, and just not good writing in general. I hope Marvel cleans up their act and make me feel as excited as i was when the first avengers movie cam out or when thanos snapped or when they brought everyone back. I miss that from marvel and i believe they can do better

I have started thinking of the Disney+ shows as transition vehicles for the films. However, the Skrull storyline isn't finished yet, as we know there are a million skrulls (minus Gravik, Telos, & a few more) out here in 616, and we know some are already world leaders. Perhaps the rampant paranoia is a good plot line for one of the upcoming films.👍🏾👍🏾

Its interesting how these team of new avengers would have had a theme conection to the skrulls core idea of replacing. As they all (aside from spiderman maybe) replaced or continued the mantle of other heroes, and watching them struggle with them carrying on an stolen mantle and the skrulls stealing that mantle to create chaos in the world they were sworn to protect. Sort of as the avengers not thinking themselves capable of stopping the first invasion but trying regardless. Idk, it would have been really cool imo.
in my opinion, it shouldn’t have been just a movie. it should’ve been a whole saga.

I feel like phase 4 should have been around exploring the aftermath of the blip and the skulls exploiting the vulnerable earth for that, going into secret invasion as you planned. Kang takes a side seat, like those little post-credit scenes that teased Thanos, and 2-3 projects (Loki, Antman, MoM?) Should have stuck to the multiverse concept. That way, we'd have a brief intro to cosmic and multiverse plotlines, while a nice secret invasion angle is explored through a couple of movies and TV shows. That'd have been so good

Phase 4 would’ve been a good slot for the overall secret invasion story instead we got what we got
bravo!! I still mostly like the latest MCU projects but this would've been so much better, and addressed the main separation issue of this phase.
It would have even been fine to have a 6 episode mini series that leads up to a movie that concludes the conflict in order really get at the heart of the storyline.

I agree that Secret Invasion should have been an Avengers thing, but if they gave a movie budget to a tv-show, and the fan base speculated the crap out of everything like Wandavision, it would have been much better than a one-and-done movie.
I think we need to accept that the MCU up to End Game was a once-in-a-lifetime cinematic experience/story and that there is nothing they can do to recreate it or rival it. Trying to do it again is just a waste of time.

Good job! Yes I think your story would have been super fun. At the same time, had the smaller story they were trying to tell stayed with a story about Fury and his friendship with Talos, and had the two of them outsmarted gravik in the end, I think the show would have worked. Having said that, I don't know the comics, so perhaps the secret invasion shape-shifting storylines call for a larger story. At the same time, who else but Talos was a friend of Fury's to explore that dynamic? Maria always felt more like an employee. Anyway.. rambling now... 😊
What got me was that timeline was for all the DNA to be collected,they had to already be in place well before they decided to act..Because I found it weird that they went out to collect everything but already were against Fury as he was collecting it, which makes it curious as to why it was turned in and this didn't happen sooner..
At which point they could have done a version of Dark Reign and acted like heroes taking over during the blip.

They could’ve had the current lineup of movies and shows and just include plot points of the skrulls taking over which should’ve concluded with the Secret Invasion Avengers 5 movie. They could’ve made Cap Sam a Skrull or even brought back Steve Rogers out of nowhere as a skrull, Wasp could’ve pushed Scott back into the quantum realm later revealed to be a skrull, happy hogan could’ve been replaced in spider man, department of damage control could’ve shown to have a skrull, Bruce banner (since he was restricting himself with the device) could’ve been replaced by a skrull, kingpin as a skrull after echo shoots him, Val, and maybe even Maria hill as her story seems cut short especially with how secret invasion turned out. It should’ve been built out through Phase 4 as a smaller conflict uniting the heroes while still building the multiverse for Phase 6. It’s so disappointing that although it’s okay to focus on the whole multiverse concept through the Saga, they still needed the Phases to build towards smaller conflicts as appetizers before Kang Dynasty and Secret Invasion.
Man, I really wish this is how the MCU did secret invasion.

Every end credit scene should've been skrull related. Utilizing the actors from each movie, and expanding the secret invasion.
Agreed we need a avengers movie now. Nothing is tied together. Just constant new stories with no follow up. It seemed like we had something in a post credit scene in shang chi but that was a super long time ago
Good ep recap here, but I’m wondering about something that was quite noticeable that you fail to mention here: what was with all that purple coursing through the trunk of that tall tree Kahhori & Atahraks climbed to get closer to the portal? Could that violet hue signify the presence of purple-heart herb or even traces of vibranium within that tree? It didn’t appear anywhere else in Sky World so I could be grasping, but I find that an odd choice of color to have present in a place thriving with Tesseract-blue.

I think a better way to explain Fury not bringing in the Avengers would have been something like this:
"Fury, why haven't you called in any of your...special friends?"
"I did."
"Oh, good. Where are we meeting them?"
