Marvel's Phase 4 is longer than every other phase of the MCU combined, with even more stories left to tell before the Multiverse Saga is complete. So how will Marvel Studios deal with the increasingly complex MCU post-Kang? Should they reboot and start again? Our own Colton Ogburn and special guest ‪@heavyspoilers‬ help us answer that question.

    #Marvel #MCU #Reboot
The MCU likes to say it’s all connected, but is it becoming too connected? Is the behemoth of Marvel studios releasing so much content that it’s going to collapse under its own weight, and soon it’s going to require a total reboot? I’ll explain why this could happen, how it would work, and how it connects to secret wars-and later I’ll be joined by two of the best, Paul Spoilerman from heavy Spoilers and our own Colton Ogburn. But first, here’s my take.
A few weeks ago, I saw a meme going around the internet, that was what the lord of the rings franchise was started today, and it included ridiculous prequels like thorin, the grey wizard, bard king of Laketown, the Gollum movie, etc. Most movie studios try to milk their IP for all its worth-like Sony floating the idea of an Aunt May movie.
    Doug: No, it's that real?
Yes, they were actually thinking of doing that. Now Marvel studios are very different from most studios. They love their characters, are devoted to the comics, and you never feel like they’re being too unfaithful to the source material. But. The MCU has become very complex. Phase one contained about 13 hours of movies. And if you walked into the Avengers, you could follow the story, even if you hadn't seen all the movies. If you had seen them, then you were rewarded.
But by the time Endgame rolled around, if you hadn’t seen the other 21 films in the franchise, you were gonna be lost. Why were you supposed to care about Tony meeting his adult father if you hadn't seen his daddy issues in Iron Man 2 [clip]. Or care why thor was depressed? [crying about jane, aether].
Obviously, I loved Endgame…because I'm a huge Marvel fan, and it’s awesome. But marvel’s phase 4 has created about 50 hours of content-more than phases 1 through 3 combined. That is a lot for the average viewer to stay caught up on. Imagine phase 9 when it’s going to take a year of rewatching to understand why multiversal Thanos, Kang, Loki, Magento, and dr doom are teaming up in the Acts of Vengeance.
    Doug: but that sounds awesome!
Yes, yes it does. But it might also collapse under its own weight. People shouldn’t have to do homework to understand a movie. Even if every other movie and show in the MCU is standalone, you’re still gonna want to know some of these characters for the team-up movie. Everything becomes a must-watch, and that will wear fans out.
So going back to basics and simpifying everything would seem like a good idea.
Doug: Well what do you mean by rebooting? Like, do it all over?
    No, no, not that.

Here's how they should do the DCU: Create a trilogy of Superman movies similar to what Matt Reeves is doing with Batman except in a lighter tone. They are in different DC cities/states, not next to each other, so it is easy to keep them separated initially and not necessary to have them interact right away. Just because they exist in their own "world" doesn't mean they can't coexist in the same universe. Similarly, do the same with Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, etc and have them deal with their own supervillains in their respective geographic locations for at least their first two movies. Batman (Robert Pattinson) can then recruit them individually, with brief cameo in their third movies, bringing them together for the Justice League in the space tower to deal with existential threats that these heroes can't handle by themselves. They can still reference the existence of the other superheroes without actually making a cameo similar to how Matt Reeves did with citizens in Gotham wearing Halloween costumes of other heroes. That will build the anticipation more for the audience to want to see some crossovers and big Justice League movie and makes more sense than finding a file, he stole from Lex Luthor, with folders on them because Batman would already be aware of them and be building a contingency plan before bringing them all together.

I wish they would keep the real world implications of aging actors and death as part of what these stories can explore. How about a story on aging heroes out of touch with current times, or waning powers, passing down the torch (we're doing that to some extent now, but I want more heavy implications of this), adapting, hanging up the mantle... so many opportunities to have mature stories for a maturing audience that is aging -with- the stories.

I think the lane thing is a good direction. For example, The X-Men essentially became its own franchise in the 90’s. They could tell those stories while developing the “Street Level” storyline. As those projects come out work on the “Mystic Level” Storyline. Focusing on 5 characters in each level. That’s how you deal with the overcrowding. Stream shows can be good, but should be different from the storyline of the movies; origins and team ups that would just complicate the movies.

There is real weight to the idea that fans who have been around since Phase 1 are eventually going to grow out of the MCU and even experience fatigue from all of the projects coming in and then the younger audience is not going to be willing to go back and watch 15 years or so of content just to know what's going on. They are definitely going to have to do some kind of reboot or else hang the Hat up after Phase 6. For the most die-hard fans who are sad by that idea, we need to take a dose of wisdom from the Vision at the end of Age of Ultron when he explained that a thing is not beautiful because it lasts.

It’d be unfortunate to not have the likes of Tony Stark, T’Challa, & Steve Rogers interact with the new 616 mutant cast. They have tons more comic material they haven’t even touched yet.
A multiversal reboot would give them the chance to keep who stays & replace who leaves. It’d be more like DC giving multiple actors a chance to shine in the same role.

Practically, I think the MCU has designated slots to fill and they don't really have the flexibility to cut down on the quantity. So an ideal situation would be developing the canon through movies and special presentations ALONE, then using a 'WHAT IF' type of logic on all the other series titles, so they can have fun with them and they don't have to fit them into the canon and require casual fans to watch them to understand the films.

I know the MCU is a lot right now and I understand what Paul said about kids born today not wanting to watch ALL the content to enjoy the movies in the future.
I think it is too soon to reboot and recast Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. There are so many stories to tell and opportunities for new heroes to have their day in the sun. Sam’s arc is so interesting so far and he’s only been Cap for 20 minutes. I think they need to downsize, YES. (SheHulk is honestly a sensitive subject). Go back to being grounded and telling interesting character stories with the new characters and let us fall in love with who they are the battles that are personal to them. Ms Marvel, Sam Wilson, Kate Bishop could all have something special if we give them time and strong stories to develop. Let’s let Marvel settle into what they want to tell and not cry Reboot at the first sign of the unfamiliar. I miss Steve too but the original 6 aren’t the only heroes that matter.
The shows were the answer to COVID to keep us going. I loved it. Now, we are back in theaters and ready to get back to basics with these new heroes.

I have ZERO Marvel fatigue. But I see what you guys are saying about potentially not giving people a good enough way to on-ramp if they haven’t been following the MCU or comics for years. And I agree that some of the Disney plus shows (especially She Hulk, though I loved it) could have just been a “special”. Great thoughts!

I'm not convinced one way or the other as to what their plans are following "Phase 6". However, what I believe they SHOULD do is do away with the Multiverse in its entirety as a result of their battle with Kang during Secret Wars. And consequently, create a new, singular Universe in the process. If Secret Wars is to be considered the swan song for all movies, and thus Universes that had come before, then it would only make sense for them to create something entirely new for them to focus their attention on, moving forward. Said Universe can contain a combination of select, heroes/ villains both new, and old. As well as leave the door open to establish brand new characters that haven't been seen before, or brand new interpretations of previously established characters that haven't been seen since Endgame. They could rebrand themselves for Phase 7 through Phase 12 as UMCU (Ultimate Marvel Cinematic Universe). This would keep all of the events of the first six phases canon. Both, in and out Universe, while also allowing new stories to be told with new iterations of previously established characters without necessarily having to keep up with the six phases that had came before. Perhaps the events of Phases 7-12 lead to the creation of a new Multiverse, that will all eventually culminate into a second Secret Wars event.
I feel this is the best move creatively, practically, and narratively. It would allow them to hit that big red button, while also keeping the history of the decades of films that had come before without said films getting in the way of their creative freedom.

Super nerdy episode of SC. This I like. I think the Batman analogy missed a point. We know Batman so well, that if you change actor part of the fun is trying to work out if there is continuity or if it’s a whole new thing and even if it’s a new timeline the enjoyment is watching to pick up differences. Key characters in the MCU, could easily be that and as @heavyspoilers points out, as with spiddy, people won’t mind if they haven’t seen previous versions because that is what it is. I think house of mouse will keep going, they ultimately care only for money, not the fans. I have to disagree about she-hulk, she had a point, it was a massive middle finger to no it all fans and critics who don’t like is being done and at the same time just sheer wit, the FX were sh*te yes but I looked beyond it, and the introduction of scar in the way it was, was deliberate, it was intentionally lazy. That was the point to She-Hulk. FUN and silliness.

I think you're all overthinking this. Phase 4 is basically a set up for multiple different groups and storylines which will be separate from one another. Thats the easiest way to work it all. Each group is alone in its own and maybe references timelines or characters as a side dressing as we've seen in the shows. Divide and conquer. Each group is managed separately and those stories can then be merged and split as needed.

I think the biggest issue with Phase 4 has been the lack of confirmation of continuations. We have been introduced to so much new but not many season 2s have been announced. I am excited for The Marvels and part of that is the end credit scene of Ms. Marvel. I am excited for the next Captain America movie because Falcon and Winter Soldier helped hype that movie up. Wanda being in Doctor Strage 2 was awesome! But what about Moon Knight? She-Hulk? Hawkeye? What about their future? Phase 4 is the first Phase of the new Saga, a perfect time to introduce the key players, but we are being told they aren't getting season 2s... What is happening? Not much to connect to when we see a lot of one off characters. Is it all connected when nothing connects? We just need to know the plans, to be excited for what is to come. For a business which is often complained about for only marketing the next release, and not focusing on the current release, they have done a terrible job at advertising the future of these characters.

Part of that was the secrecy of Marvel, when they started nobody expected of them to really be conected, but now? ... second parts? we already know that Echo´s show is coming and that Kate Bishop will be in the new Ant-man movie, they introduced the Young Avengers already (though nothing like that has been advertised so far) and the Thunderbolts (and we know that is coming), they introduced mutants (Namor and Ms Marvel) and more Gods (Moon Knight), so the problem is the secretism, but second parts are coming, though probably no second seasons

These shorter phases (5 and 6) also don't help as I feel there is less time for them to continue these characters

  • @jessemanchester8549

I think we should return to the TV Cross over/Defenders projects. I think the BBEG/Sig Weaver character and centralizing Iron Fist randomly was the big fallacy. Everything was, at worst, fine. We can keep the TV down on street level, with some exciting Matt Murdock level cameos in the big movies. That'll help a lot.
Cosmic level heros/villains should be reserved as end credit/infinity stone ties for the larger projects as teasing for the big phase ending team up projects--not giving them their own franchises and lanes. Saturating the audience with cosmic entities and stories, the cosmic luster is lost.
2 lanes. Street level TV with heavy references to the movies is one lane. The other lane is A list character movies, with B level cameos. Cosmic lane is the invisible highway that those lanes are driving towards. I want to emphasize, we don't need more Celestial movies, Silver Surfer/Galactus would be boring as standalone, we don't need a Thanos prequel etc.

@Johnnytee space is fine, and the 'cosmos' they represent sure. But cosmic entities, celestials, galactis, eternity, death, the tribunal etc, they are BBEG that should be built up as phase ending climaxes, not money grabbing franchises that requires character development, struggle. These are the literal primodial essence the universe is made of. These characters are archetypal struggle in a class 'Man vs. God' or 'Man vs. Fate' stories on a grander scale.
I guess my point is, they don't serve as standalone franchises, or one way monsters of the week. But should be built up in a Avengers, Thanos, Ultron scenario.

In the comics, especially during the 80s, you had the mini-series to introduce characters to test the waters. Many were later used in (Or in some cases previously used) in other titles. Many did not get long running titles, or even much use. But you can't find out what people will get behind, if you don't show it to them. I think of the Disney + shows as the equivalent to the 1980s Mini Series.

They need to do a sort of reboot at some point -- if only so they can make more movies of their best characters. I don't want to wait another 20 years for another Iron Man movie, for example, just because they want to keep Tony Stark dead in the MCU. As the OG MCU characters "phase" out (no pun intended), they will eventually get to the point where they're just dealing with secondary characters -- or they have to bring the OG characters back via the multiverse.
