What’s poppin’, Watch-Men?! It’s me, MT! And welcome back to the Heavy Spoilers show! This is a breakdown of the 3 and a half hour Ultimate Cut of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen! This big boy is a brutal beast of a blast and I can’t wait to get into it with you all so I won’t! So much like the Comedian did to the pavement, let’s just dive into it!
The Watchmen movie, of course, is an adaptation of Alan Moore’s 1986 comic book series set in the Cold War era of an alternate universe of crime fighting vigilantes. And because of the Cold War setting, World War III is a threat consuming the minds of everyone. This being the case, I love how the movie starts with a zoom out from the Comedian’s smiley face pin accompanied by the sound of a tea kettle screeching. Having this occur as The Comedian listens to a TV broadcast detailing the rising tensions between Russia and Afghanistan was a fantastic audible choice by Zack Snyder to set up this universe of boiling tension between the nations of the world on the brink of a possible nuclear armageddon.

When I was in school my teacher was a friend of the production designer Alex McDowell so when this movie released he came to do a lecture. I’m still amazed by this movie’s faithfulness visually to the source and how hard they worked to fit everything in. I seem to remember McDowell talking about how all of the Night Owl books were fully printed with text under the covers because that was the level of detail they were wanting.

Another fun, subtle detail is that when Adrian Veidt is around his friends in private like Nite Owl he speaks with a very slight German accent. You can hear it best when Dan goes to see him at Veidt tower. He speaks in a more American accent the rest of the time when in public. In the comic he is of German origin and I think he masks his accent because at the time WWII was very fresh in people’s minds and he wanted to distance himself from them as much as possible.

Zack Snyder has an incredible talent and eye when it comes to moving images, and here he had such a dense material to build on its elevated Watchmen to something more than a comic and a movie. When I read it I see and hear the movie in my head and when I watch the movie I remember so much from Alan Moore’s comic, it a wonderful mythos of an alternative history . . .

Those playing cards are very specific. They are a deck designed so the magician can accurately predict what card you are holding (the patern on the back is unique to each card). This kind of deck plays well into the symbolism of fatalism and gives someone the illusion of control while orchestrating events. 24:03

21:05 - In addition to the Pale Horse reference, there's also an ominous allusion to Krystalnacht, which is translated as "Night of Broken Glass" and represents a WW II-era atrocity. Definitely another intentional reference to oncoming pain that the city of Manhattan suffers in the movie, Watchmen.

2:06 You are spot on with the 1911 sitting on top of a Hustler. But I don't think fear or paranoia are components of having a gun within reach. When you live by the sword, over childless decades, you accumulate swords, lying around everywhere.

That was great - lots of stuff I never picked up on. Don't agree with the comedian and Ozymandias' 'superpowered' fighting skills negating the arrival of Dr Manhattan though. I never really considered them to be super powered - not that I fancy trying to punch a chunk out of a wall anytime soon - but always considered them to be just a lot better than the average brawler found in a comics universe - much like Batman.

I agree with this sentiment. Especially since not only are they successful heroes, but there's other elements of super tech to the world. Rorscharch's mask, and all of the later Nightowl's manufactured bat-gadgets.Even the source material plays up that The Comedian was built like a weight lifter and he must have been attacked by two guys to have his apartment thrashed and been thrown out that heavy plate glass window. Peaks of human prowess.

Even though we never learn exactly what happened to Hooded Justice, Ozymandias believed it was the Comedian who killed him. Ozymandias was doing his own investigations after Hooded Justice died and he discovered that the Comedian had been contracted by the US Government to track down Hooded Justice but had allegedly reported failure in doing so to his employers. Ozymandias suspected this was a lie and that Comedian killed him off anyway, having still been bitter about Hooded Justice interrupting his rape of Silk Spectre years earlier.

One thing. Yes the heroes did not have super powers in the comic.
Although it's hinted that Ozy was.
They mention a few times he was different from the rest. Faster, smarter, stronger.
He was able to summarily defeat the Comedian, with little or no injury to himself.
The assassination attempt showed beyond human reflexes and speed.
Night owl mentions in the comic book, crime figuring almost looked too easy for him.

I had the original trade paperback of the comic and I loved the film and loved the recent TV series more. My only problem was with the film portrayal of Ozymandias - he didn’t strike me as ‘super’ enough. He was supposed to be the perfect human specimen, but just looked too skinny. However Jeremy Irons was fabulous in the series

I am pretty sure the rally that Night Owl and Comedian went to break up was an anti masked-hero rally not an anti Vietnam rally. Especially since it took place WAY after Vietnam was over (As remarked by Comedian - who was in Vietnam until the war was over, when he stated he loved being back and working on American soil again). Also as you keenly point out, Vietnam seems to have been annexed and made the 51st state so I don't think people are still protesting the war there

At risk of giving What is AntiLogic ideas, has anyone tried to argue that Negan is the comedian in the future?

Great video! Rorschach's mark is a pair of mirrored Rs (for Rorschach), not Ls. The photographer of the famous V-J shot was Eisenstadt, not Ernstadt. You make me want to watch the opening again just to savor every moment.

Great choice here to breakdown The Watchman, I love this movie. Excellent job by MT with this one. I never understood the lack of support for Snyder on this one but as the years have gone by I’ve realized that for some reason many people who don’t like Snyder’s films feel it’s necessary to go out of their way to show how and why they dislike them. This is a very tough story to put to film and he does it very well. I really like the show on HBO, wondering if they will ever follow up with a second season

21:05 another, possible, easter egg: below Pale Horse is the word 'Krystalnacht', maybe referencing the destroying of Jewish property in pre-ww2 Nazi Germany. Symbolising the hatred towards superheroes and the wish of them being outlawed.

One thing about Zandt's death, and I can't immediately recall if the film ever touched upon it, but homophobia was not the primary motivation behind her death in the comic, which claims that her murderer was a former villain whom Zandt herself had nearly killed in the past. This could be another example of the film changing elements from the original comic, or it could be that the homophobia was more of a secondary motivation.
