Over 30 years after its publication, Watchmen is still regarded as one of the all-time greatest comic book stories. Recently, DC finished publishing a sequel story, Doomsday Clock. This episode compares and contrasts the two stories by very different writers, Alan Moore and Geoff Johns respectively, and looks at their different goals. The original Watchmen told a complete story but now characters like Dr. Manhattan and Rorschach exist side-by-side with Batman and Superman.

One issue I have with the setting of Doomsday clock, is that the world believed Rorschach's journal. Do we remember how he wrote? "Meeting with dry bird left bad taste in mouth" but even if that tabloid rag understood & published it all ... It'd still be ignored like so many conspiracy theories are in real world. Also, since when does ANY writer working for hire for a publisher get to own the characters they write? That would come as a huge damn surprise to Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and basically every other person who's ever created a comic book character for any major publisher.

If you want to know the full extent of how badly DC screwed Alan Moore over, google it, as you said, Google is a thing.Sure , the character templates were the same , but the characterization is all Moore's achievement. Watchmen is one of the greatest and most iconic pieces of comic art and literature of the 20th century. You seriously think Alan Moore is homeless? He's Alan fucking Moore, he's one of the Godfathers of the comic book industry. He was one of the people that proved that comics could rise above just being vehicles of populist entertainment and government propaganda and could be serious, compelling works of art.He Carrie's as much weight outside the comics industry as he does in.I have no idea how Moore is doing these days he has no social media and leads a very hermit like lifestyle. I'm a 100 percent sure he's not homeless and yes, he's doing quite well these days, you can find out, Google is a thing. You gotta give credit to where its due, Johns is super creative at enhancing continuity at DC. Making Parallax a fear entity, addressing the issue that death has no consequence in comics in a clever way in Blackest Night, and bringing fan favorite characters like Wally and JSA with clever continuity corrections. Fleshing out whole stories out of such deep DC dives such as Moore's GL annual is still a creative feat, i would argue. Also new 52 was not his brain child. Flashpoint was just a regular dc event that Didio and Jim Lee thought would be a perfect chance to jumpstart a reboot that would boost sales. But even if we dont agree on Johns' talent, your a great critic Chris! Keep on with the great content.

DD wanted to do a reboot ever since Final Crisis concluded, but Johns said no. but after years of in-fighting, Johns caved and made FlashPoint which started the N52. Needless to say, that was a huge disaster and soured a lot of long-time fans with the reboot. I remember perfectly when Goeff Johns retconned Superboy into being "a clone of Superman and Luthor", and thinking that it sounded as a logical idea, but was just a hyper simplification, not very respectful to the work of the previous writers. Little did I know that it would be the essential Geoff Johns trope. He "remade" Superboy, then Green Lantern... then Flash... about that time I thought, this guy will not stop until he remakes the whole DC Universe. Enter: The New 52, which was exactly that. Since his intention of remaking super-hero movies was a complete flop, and he already had remade the whole Universe, his next obvious step was other people's work. And that's how we get to Doomsday Clock, his creepy remaking/cloning of not only Watchmen, but also Alan Moore's writing style. I'm a little bit afraid now, any minute now Johns will start remaking my life, which is a shame, since I've got a very nice relationship with my father and I'm pretty fond of both my arms.

The unifying idea behind the dislike was that those books and others like them lead to the "Grim and Gritty" era of comic books. These were mostly older fans who remembered Golden Age heroes and their adventures. It was a sentiment I would hear again later among some younger comic book fans(not surprisingly, many of them did not enjoy the G and G era). As to the material, I personally never felt it needed to be revisited. Sequels to that seminal work never felt necessary to me. That said, the video was both entertaining and informative. 10:06 . You've hit the nail right on the head there, Chris. Too many company decision makers are more influenced by their need to create and sustain "their brand" in order to make more money, especially by merchandising the hell out of their assets, instead of allowing creative talent to tell great stories that excite fans and take us somewhere new. Ironically, just like Moore was employed to do in the 1980s.

I personally love Doomsday Clock. I think it's a decent story with fun characters, old and new. But what I think it excels at, is reminding us of the importance of Superheroes like Superman. Heroes we look up to and aspire to be. The type of hero that we're sadly lacking in today's world.
It's all well and good to have relatable heroes like Spider-Man, or anti Heroes like Deadpool, but we also need heroes that inspire hope and represent the best of humanity.
This is why He-Man and She-Ra are my favourite Superheroes, and why I'm not a fan of MOTU revelation, and Netflix She-Ra. They don't understand what those characters represent, and how we see them. Doomsday Clock shows this with Superman.

After the New 52 was over and Rebirth promised a longlasting return to form, blowing all up again was just a bad idea.

"You don't need a story to tell your readers that things need to be lighter."
While I get what you're saying, you could make that same argument for pretty much any changes in comics. Big crossover events aren't necessary for continuity reboots but they make for fun or at least interesting stories so they go with them.
I'm not trying to defend this. I love Watchmen and I don't mind the milking of the merch (I actually want to try and get some of those Funko Pops after seeing them in your review), but the prequels and sequels are kind of sacrilegious and shouldn't be added to the main DC continuity.
    Great video, Chris!

nothingislogical Geoff Johns has stated Doomsday Clock is a stand alone story to Watchmen, being canonical to DC alone. DC however has said it is a direct sequel.

I watched another guys vids on the whole Doomsday Clock saga, but he was soo into every stupid misstep that it became something more akin to reading glowing yelp reviews to places you already know are only half good... Dr. Manhattan’s interaction with time is one of my favorite things but also one of the most misunderstood (1) getting to see your clear critique is VERY welcome
      1) Dr. Manhattan does not create copies of himself, he does not know all things. He moves through the world with an amazing understanding of the hows and the whys and can to an extent “see” into the future. “But then what the hell are all of those copies of him & how come he am so smart?” You say... well he has a special trick that he can do, at any time he can move to the past and step out of where ever he was at that moment, so if when he’s off daydreaming about a science experiment he’d like to try, he can just go back to the last time he was home (banging Silk Spector) split into a new body and walk over and try the experiment (Silk Spector saw this as him getting bored and his mind wandering to things other than her during their love making). He could for instance step out of himself repeatedly at the start of the Vietnam War and ride around on everyone’s head watching and waiting for a time when he should step in, however doing so would take “A” however long each ‘copy’ had to hang around times “B” how many times he went back to do it, lets say 1 year and 400,000 times = Dr Manhattan spending 400,000 years of his life riding around on the heads of 1960s Vietnamese people... sure he could, but who would. He has the ability to do amazing things but the work required to do so is exhausting and the tedium of it costs him his interest in helping humanity, because he’s seen the futility in doing it, even Silk Spector gets angry at him for coming back to give her an orgy, no matter what he does it does nothing to improve his life (largely because Ozzy was sabotaging it).
      A x B = how long it takes

I would argue that continuity reboots are not all created equal. Crisis on Infinite Earths and Flashpoint made what were, to my understanding, more fundamentally drastic changes to continuity. Doomsday Clock exists to utilize the Watchmen brand, and to... reintroduce the JSA?
However, I really don't know that much about the topic. Continuity is the biggest reason why I read no ongoing titles; why I prefer to dabble in graphic novels and comic-related media. I don't have to worry about a time-compounded labyrinth of semi-retconned history.

Moore himself was willing to write sequels once upon a time. Anyone claiming there's no room is being revisionist.
