Hey Paul, great breakdown! Have you ever watched 𝘾𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚 with Michael B. Jordan? That’s another early 2000s superhero movie with the premise of “𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹? 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲..... 𝙛𝙧 𝙛𝙧??” I remember enjoying it and would love to see your take on it! 🙏🏽👀
I want to take a moment to give Bruce Willis his flowers in light of his health condition. He is one of my top 5 best actors and has been my 80's/90's heartthrob.
Yeah, this is definitely the end of an era. I always saw him as one of the top 3 perfect tough guy hero dudes in action movies. Fifth Element will always be my favorite one of his.
Some more easter eggs: 13:52 - Elijah discusses these "realistic depictions" - hero's square jaw, villain's disproportionate head to the body - David is played by Bruce Willis, a man with a prominent, masculine square jaw, and Sam L Jackson's hairstyle makes his head look disproportionately large to the rest of his body (though SLJ chose this style to model on Frederick Douglas, a slave abolitionist in the 1800s). 17:56 - David walks through the crowd and brushes past people the way he does to those in the train station later on. As he goes past the man with the gun the music dies out subtly, but there is no immediate indication that he has touched him or noticed something other than the audio and David's reaction. A great move here by M. Night as it slowly builds up this ESP David has, letting us gradually get more of an idea of what it is and how David perceives it. 18:33 - this increased measures in security very much reflect our post-9/11 culture in airport security and monitoring actions. An eerie move on M. Night's part as this came 10 months before 9/11. It's very much believed that, much like Elijah's biology is rooted in true-science of Type 1 Osteogenesis-Imperfecta, David may have a hyper-exaggerated version of Myostatin-Related-Muscle-Hypertrophy - a real disorder in which people who have this don't have the growth hormone Myostatin that inhibits excess muscle growth (if we have too much muscle we struggle to move/run etc and several scientists have manufactured ways to inhibit this GH and breed cattle with huge muscle mass). This reflects Elijah as he is another individual missing a biological element that give him his powers. Coupled with this, David is also indicated to have extra skeletal density. Put this together with his Myostatin-Related-Muscle-Hypertrophy and you have the exact reason David is afraid of water and can't swim. People with this disorder never learn to float on water as they are so dense in muscle and skeletal properties that they sink! Very subtle real world science, but fantastic groundwork to this superhero-epic!
Unbreakable remains my all time favorite superhero movie just because of how grounded and realistic it felt. No cheesy action or superpower effects. On top of that, it felt very noir despite being set in a present-day time.
This movie was definitely overlooked and under appreciated when it was released. I remember watching it in theatres 3 times and everyone I knew either thought I was weird or said they just didn't get it. I knew it was something special and I was just a kid. Rewatched it after all these years and it's still a masterpiece. Bruce Willis was so magnetic in this role and the score is unforgettable.
I think a lot of its initial reception was because of its marketing. People didn't know what kind of movie to expect and it absolutely wasn't what the trailers promised. I remember them being very action forward, while the movie is actually kind of a character drama. Now that it's had enough time to be divorced from its marketing campaign, people are appreciating it more.
I love these breakdowns you’ve been doing of these slightly older, great movies. Such a cool way to introduce people to movies that they may not have seen or appreciated at the time of their release. You keep making them, I’ll keep watching them.
I remember watching it when it came out and being surprised at the lackluster reception. Glad that it's getting recognised today for the wonderful work that it is. M.Night really was ahead of his time.
The movie is both subtle and heavy handed in its plot points, especially in the super hero references. Super powers very much come across as cheating reality, as they make people seem better at their jobs then they actually are, and make the victories seem unearned. I think audiences didn't appreciate this, and that was my feeling at the time as well. This movie had a lot of plot points that went nowhere, and I really didn't feel anything for our hero, who comes across as something of a loser in the A plot, even though his 'press A to win' powers come through in the end.
This movie was at least a decade ahead of its time, I even had to admit when I saw it in the theaters and I thought it was just ok, now I think it’s one of the best super hero origin movies ever made.
I liked the color analysis you did. I'd like to add that purple and green are complementary colors, which means they're opposites on the color wheel, as opposite as glass and David are.
Apologies for the necro; I just found this channel recently. Kinda surprised no one pointed this out, but no, green and purple aren’t complementary colors. *However*, green, purple, and orange as a trio are all secondary colors, each being formed by a mixture of two primary colors… Green and purple share *blue*, which could be linked to the common weakness of water between David Dunn and Mr. Glass. Purple and orange share *red*, the color of blood (in this case, in the sense of “blood on their hands”) and the color most frequently associated with evil besides black.
I'm loving the breakdowns for these older movies. These movies are bangers that a lot of people have forgotten about or haven't seen at all. Keep it up!
As somebody who's always been a villain fan, mister glass is probably one of the best portrayals of a villain you will ever see... No superpowers no one limited money...just beats you with his mind
"You wanna know why, David?? It was because of the kids! They called me 'Mr. Glass'." "I know who I am." I love how Elijah is ultimately crushed to discover during the ending that, yes indeed..he is a villain. He seems sad about it, yet relieved that his lifelong search for purpose has finally revealed itself.
😂 the kids!! They call me Mr GLASS 😂😂 BISHHT PLEASE THEM KIDS ARE A MENACE! 😊😊 ELIJAH'S MOM SHOULD HAVE PULLED THEM KIDS TO THE SIDE TOOK OFF HER BELT AND SHOW THEM WHAT GLASS REALLY FEELS LIKE ON THEIR ASS😮
One of the best comic book movies ever made. Amazing details, storytelling, emotion, Acting. Bruce And Samuel deserved Oscar nominations. The ending always hits me with Samuel's line delivery. James deserved a nom too. One of the best and most underrated scores ever. Too bad Glass sucked because it had so much potential. Split was really good through.
Honestly ! Incredibly disappointed with Glass Such a pessimistic dumb ending David dead in a puddle with a random secret society introduced at the end smh, M.night always gets in his own way
This trilogy caught me off guard. It is an amazing superhero movie that doesn't need the frills. I watch this with the same love as the Dark Knight trilogy.
Something that's really impressive to me is, M. knight was basically trying to do what the MCU ended up doing years before the MCU came to existence. If he was allowed to make his sequels then, he'd be seen in an even higher light especially considering he was using original characters and not already established cultural icons. Legendary.
So glad you made this breakdown. The Unbreakable Trilogy is my absolute favorite movies of all time and the best super-hero movies in my opinion as well. Your breakdown made me fall in love with the first movie all over again and I'm going to binge them all tonight!!!
When you said 'i love you' at the end, I felt that. I went back to all your videos I've watched over the course of a few days (on a binge) and hit the like button.
Thank you so much for this breakdown. This is one of my favorite movies and I missed almost all of the things you brought up. Well done, I really enjoyed this!
Cheers for this, I loved it 👍 for me unbreakable was the best of the trilogy even though I really enjoyed them all. How about a breakdown in the future of the exorcist?
Great Movie Choice! And Great breakdown! Also really good sportsmanship after having the Knock @ Cabin video taken down after being allowed up for 10 days. I really liked this, and at the time thought it should do better. People had a skewed expectation because they were fresh off of seeing The Sixth Sense from M. Night. I think. Anyway, you didn't like 12 Monkeys? I saw in theater when I was 15 and I loved it, like really really loved it. But anyway, Unbreakable is in a different class altogether. Cheers.
What a fantastic movie. I recently watched Split and Glass, and they are right on. After dozens of superhero movies, M. Night still managed to make them unique.
So sad to hear about Bruce now be diagnosed with dementia. My great gma that passed last year had that, some days were good & others were bad. Wishing Bruce the best!
I always liked to think Kevin was named Crumb as a symbolic nod to a crumb being a small part of a larger whole, ostensibly made up of other chunks (or crumbs).
M Night's trilogy is the most realistic superhero 'franchise'. He did a great work with the cinematography and the dark themes. I personally would prefer Unbreakable-Split-Glass style movies a hundred times more then the marvel's stuff, which not even come close to this masterpiece of art! Great rundown!
It’s a little interesting that Elijah is taking it upon himself to search for track down super hero’s, which is sort of Samuels role in the avengers movies. What do you think? 🤔
Love Unbreakable, the scene when his kid pulls a gun has that same "ultra real" feel that the "Funny How" scene has in Goodfellas...can not explain it well, just has that uncannily "scarily real" feel. Awesome Music too in this movie 👍
Well up for more Breakdowns of older Films! The scene where Dunn is "Unbreakable and Holding On" is Amazing! Also the Score is Class and Makes it A Classic Death Scene! Again Thanks HS and Another Great Choice! Can't wait for the next one Cheers
I remember I did a report on this movie back in like 2001 or 2002 for one of my high-school art classes. These are the types of superhero movies I really wanted to watch back then and still now. One of the best superhero movies IMO back way before the MCU, and I love how it actually includes comics and comic collecting in it. Still holds up today really well.
Agreed, it was ahead of its time. Taht scene whe he goes in and takes out the the guy in orange always stuck with me, that comic art/active comics cover that guy is buying kinda reminds me of david and the beast as well
Whatever MNS ended up doing, back when I first saw this film I loved it and knew it was something special. It's a film you can rewatch many many times.
I'll definitely need to go rewatch this movie, but at the 5:04 mark if this video it looks to me like for a split second when David is on the train with his on the window looking out, that the figure walking the platform with his back to us is Elijah. Now I've got to go rewatch the movie and look for more intricacies. lol
I remember going to the local store and renting Unbreakable on VHS 📼 if I'm remembering correctly it was one of the if not the last VHS 📼 I rented. Great film!
Good point on the realisn of super hero. I think this type of movie is amazing. So raw . relatable. Close to madness. And mundane. If foreshadow awakening.
I love this movie!! It came out in 2000 when I was 16 and holds a special place in my heart. My brother came home from college and rented this on vhs. My brother, mom, sister and myself sat down together for a family movie night and was enthralled by it. Fast forward to today and my mom and brother have passed away (brother in ‘06, mom in ‘09) and that movie night stands out as a great memory with all of us together.
Unbreakable and Sixth Sense have always been my two favorite movies of M. Night. He’s one of those directors who tends to have interesting ideas, but his twists and many of the final products are just so dumb and incredibly predictable - you can figure out most of his movie’s twists just from watching their trailers! 27:39 Did he just diss 12 Monkeys?! Come on. Terry Gilliam has done a lot of great works.
I’d never heard of this movie until I ran across it on HBO or some cable channel and i thought, oh Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson, gotta see this and I LOVED IT !!! Definitely the BEST of the 3 movies !!!
@𝗧.𝗲.𝗹.𝗲.𝗴.𝗿.𝗮.𝗺@heavyspoilers_yt don't talk to me you fucking pathetic ass piece of human shit. Stop taking advantage of random people online and grow some vegetables to sell. You'll make more money and won't ruin another innocent person's life. I hate you but I also pity you...
@𝗧.𝗲.𝗹.𝗲.𝗴.𝗿.𝗮.𝗺@heavyspoilers_yt I know you're not real. You are a simple AI program that fishes for the hard earned cash that other humans earn by blood sweat and tears. Im sorry... I don't hate you. I hate the human who programed you.
One of my all time favorites! Just showed it to my daughters. It’s challenging to explain to them the climate of the times compared to the marvel universe we live in now.
As a fan of unbreakable since I first seen it it 2002, the trilogy makes complete sense and its groundwork for the climax for glass is layed forth from unbreakable. The trilogy is the most grounded "super hero trilogy" but at the same time the ending of glass still urks me. I give m night credit for sticking to his guns and following thru but as a fan the ending of glass irritated me.
Totally agree with you on every word ..way head of it's time ..would of loved more of this character. M.nights best work in tie place with the village x
I absolutely love this film so much. I first saw it when I was very young but always forgot what the film was called. Eventually I found it again and loved it all over again. I couldn't believe it when I saw Spilit.

Please breakdown split and glass
Hey Paul, great breakdown!

Can’t break it down bro it’s unbreakable

I want to take a moment to give Bruce Willis his flowers in light of his health condition. He is one of my top 5 best actors and has been my 80's/90's heartthrob.

Such a pessimistic dumb ending

Good choice Paul. This is a great movie.
You've got to do "Split" next.
BTW, I'm with you dude 👍
27:18 I thought it funny that with all the attention to details, the production crew misspelled the word "EXCEPT."
Thank you. I was scrolling through the comments to see if anyone else caught that lol
Loving your channel! So glad I've found it!
Unbreakable by far is my favorite M Night movie and top tier Superhero movie. Thank you for giving it a breakdown like this.
It's his best work
Love this movie, great retro review and analysis
When you said 'i love you' at the end, I felt that. I went back to all your videos I've watched over the course of a few days (on a binge) and hit the like button.
Thanks for keeping me company while I made breakfast this morning. Great analysis again!
This movie was fantastic. Definitely stick with me as well. Great video!
Thank you
Thank you so much for this breakdown. This is one of my favorite movies and I missed almost all of the things you brought up. Well done, I really enjoyed this!
Keep doing the good work cant even imagine how much time it takes to make one of these. Any thoughts on doing one on Chronicle?
I love chronicle!
Anyway, you didn't like 12 Monkeys? I saw in theater when I was 15 and I loved it, like really really loved it. But anyway, Unbreakable is in a different class altogether. Cheers.
Nah I love 12 monkeys. Originally was a pandemic joke but the editor thought we could add a 12 monkeys tie in there too.
Loving these movie breakdowns, I only saw Unbreakable recently but I really liked it.
I always liked to think Kevin was named Crumb as a symbolic nod to a crumb being a small part of a larger whole, ostensibly made up of other chunks (or crumbs).
Nicely done. Now you need to do the other two Glass and Split!
My fave m night film nice breakdown paul good work as ever x just what I needed to see and didn't know 👍
Ey thank you so much, comments like that make it all worth it. Couldn’t have done it without the team either.
And jumper but all for different reasons 😂😂😂
I really appreciate these breakdowns of older movies. It’s led me to rewatch them all because they were so great.
Thank you 🙏
Great Movie, I love it 10/10!
Great Breakdown also 👍
You could also say that the jaguaro character is a beast. M. Night playing chess not checkers.
Love Unbreakable, the scene when his kid pulls a gun has that same "ultra real" feel that the "Funny How" scene has in Goodfellas...can not explain it well, just has that uncannily "scarily real" feel.
Awesome Music too in this movie 👍
Prayers to Bruce and his family 🙏🏾❤️
I really enjoyed this breakdown. You added a few insights that are new to me and this is my third or fourth video on this topic. Great Job!
Also, In the comic book cover the hero is fighting a beast, which is the bad guy’s name in split
Well up for more Breakdowns of older Films! The scene where Dunn is "Unbreakable and Holding On" is Amazing! Also the Score is Class and Makes it A Classic Death Scene! Again Thanks HS and Another Great Choice! Can't wait for the next one Cheers
Great video.
Awesome movie
I remember I did a report on this movie back in like 2001 or 2002 for one of my high-school art classes. These are the types of superhero movies I really wanted to watch back then and still now. One of the best superhero movies IMO back way before the MCU, and I love how it actually includes comics and comic collecting in it. Still holds up today really well.
Your breakdowns on older movies are great! You talking about “American Psycho” makes me wonder if that’s in the future breakdown videos. Lol
My doood this might be my favourite you’ve (un)broke down. Kinda have the need for a split/glass breakdown now.
Thanks for the info
Do more of this classic films, will be waiting for Split and Glass as well.
I did enjoy. Thanks!
Thank you for discussing Unbreakable. It is one of my favorite films as well.
I'll definitely need to go rewatch this movie, but at the 5:04 mark if this video it looks to me like for a split second when David is on the train with his on the window looking out, that the figure walking the platform with his back to us is Elijah.
Now I've got to go rewatch the movie and look for more intricacies. lol
3:23 ya making me feel old bra, we had Internet in 2000 it'd take an hour to sign on but we had it🙂 thumb up great job!
Thank you
Great movie & great breakdown. 👍🏼
I remember going to the local store and renting Unbreakable on VHS 📼 if I'm remembering correctly it was one of the if not the last VHS 📼 I rented. Great film!
I literally just did a full rewatch of this trilogy. Gotta love it
Great episode mister...love the Unbreakable series..
I’m a fan of this series. Can’t wait til next one. AYEEEEE. you gotta speak on the tablet that sits behind Mr Glass it’s Egyptian.
Love this breakdown of Unbreakable.
Thank you
Good point on the realisn of super hero.
I’ve never watched this series of movies. Now I want to watch them. Thanks Heavy for the recommendation.
can you do Split and Glass too?
I’d never heard of this movie until I ran across it on HBO or some cable channel and i thought, oh Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson, gotta see this and I LOVED IT !!! Definitely the BEST of the 3 movies !!!
Unbreakable is severely underrated
Bro Superman with Christopher Reeves was the first grounded superhero movie.
I’ll never forget seeing this in the theater when I was 20. Been a favorite ever since.
Also, there is the line about villains heads being disproportionately large, and that's the role Elijah's hair does.
Make me happy and breakdown split and glass pleaseeeeee
The Bruce Willis/Sam L. Jackson combo will always be top tier.
Love you Paul!
M Night appreciates you for this
One of my all time favorites! Just showed it to my daughters. It’s challenging to explain to them the climate of the times compared to the marvel universe we live in now.
Watching split got me into this and I'm glad it did
3:30 Didn’t have the internet in 2000? Were you living on the Moon at the time? 😂🤣🧐
Think he means there wasn't as much info on it back then
27:18 I never noticed it before, but the newspaper has a typo in it in this scene at. "Kills all *expect* newborn." Should be "...*except* newborn."
I lol'd at the Uncle Rico reference. Well done.
120KG in my 1RM. Great video, great movie. Cheers 😊
the emotional beats really hit home in this movie and it all feels so carefully crafted. love the score, too. one of my favourites from MNS.
The music in this movie brings tears to my eyes every-time I hear it
The killer virus set loose in an airport is a reference to Bruce Willis’s role in 12 monkeys
“The less said about that the better”. What? 12 Monkeys was phenomenal
This is truly one of my favorite M Night movies.
5:28 was that a shout out to CZsWorld? If so, awesome. He's great!
Yeah CZsWorld is top class
I absolutely love this film so much. I first saw it when I was very young but always forgot what the film was called. Eventually I found it again and loved it all over again. I couldn't believe it when I saw Spilit.
Excellent film.
I had the twist of unbreakable spoiled for me before watching it and it still floored me and left me speechless when it happened. Point made
This series and Brightburn are my two favorite anti superhero movies. Hanckock was good too.
I love this film and the breakdown is superb as usual. I didn’t like what they did with Glass unfortunately.
