i grew up with the first 2 games on PC, and while the ps1 game has its own charm, the first and second game on pc just, for lack of a better term capture the magic of the world of harry potter, it gives you the exact same feeling you get when watching the films
@AlternateCheems They actually control well, more specifically the second game, and the graphics are really nice for the PS1 game barring the character models.
The good old days, when games had 10 entirely different versions for no reason, lmao. HP1 has a different game for GBC, GBA, PC, PS1 and one shared for PS2/Xbox/GameCube
@@PhilOfGlimmer The wildest part is how similar the games actually are in certain aspects. Like they have so many shared assets, voice acting, music, the storybooks, spell names, certain scenes and challenges (like the Remembrall chase or the wizard cracker fight). So weird that the individual dev teams were working close enough together to have all these shared moments, but not close enough to have identical design documents and make the same game.
The PS1 HP games are oddly charming, and for some of us this was a more viable way to play in the world of HP since not everyone owned competent enough PCs to play the PC games at the time. It definitely looked better in my memories though, although playing a HP game at all at the time probably allowed my own mind to fill in the "gaps".
What I find creepy about his game is the few number of NPCs and the lack of background music in most parts of the game. It felt like I was alone in a big castle with someone inside lurking and trying to kill me. It kind of reminds me the police station in Resident evil 2 but the only difference (at least tome) is that RE2 was actually meant to be creepy, unlike Harry Potter, which was supposed to be aimed for a different audience (children).
Ironic how Filch, who is definitely NOT the prettiest character in this world, is the only character in the game that doesn't look hideous.... ALso... I just HATE how Hogwarts is portrayed in this game. Its a mash of random generic castle layouts with completely bonkers platforming and fetch quests, no real exploring aside from finding a hidden path or room here and there between the levels, but you don't really feel like you're in HOGWARTS. There is no identity and the sections all look weird and different, compared to how the PC versions of the first 3 games gave us smooth transitions between rooms, a grand, impressive castle that pulled much more inspiration from the books and movies to actualy LOOK like Hogwarts, and the spells had a better inspiration and sense of purpose. I mean... "Verdimillion"? Dafuq is that? Thank god someone came up with the Lumus spell because it became the bread and butter of Exploration in 3 consecutive games!
If I remember, its really messed up to find out on the final book that Snape is not the bad guy in the whole collection, but I don't know. In this video game they definitely make it sound like he is guilty of something. Especially at the part where you are under the invisibility cloak hearing Snape and Filch talk. Also yea, the bank part of this game definitely was a tad frustrating when I first played this when it came out.
Love your videos, especially the Harry Potter one! Also, anyone noticed that the game's story spans like two or three days in total without Harry ever going to bed?
Hell yes it's the ugliest game ever and I love it. The two PS1 games were honestly not quite as bad as they look. They do a pretty good job of capturing some of the atmosphere of the first two films. I still play through them every couple years. And those faces are magical.
When you really think about, there are plenty of moments when it doesn't makes sense as a school that you need to learn spells to advance. Like the bird on the table or Verdimilus.
@Rares Macovei Dude, the Chamber of Secrets is literally a much longer game. Philosopher's Stone you can literally 100% in less than three hours. Chamber of Secrets is nearly four hours thanks to a much bigger castle, more stuff to find, more story and extra optional content.
@@raresmacovei8382 I think because of all the storybooks and cutscenes, Chamber feels like a longer game if you are casually playing. The secret areas are more fleshed out (some of them are nearly entire levels in their own right) and the mini-games make an interesting change of pace. Even things like the Mandrake challenge adds significant time to the play through, where as in the first game it was a single room for the spell "challenge".
10:14 Omg, how are you not going to talk about that spectacular dude walk as Harry approaches the mirror? Also, can we just appreciate James Potter's face at 10:20? the vaguely sheepish way he looks at Mirror!Harry like he's questioning if that's his child after all.
Ur were right about the mine cart being difficult 😳 If u want to collect ALL…… witches and wizards cards u HAVE…… to do a perfect run collecting the coins on a spiral run then when u have collected them all u will get a chance to collect the gems in a spiral twist as well not before. If u Miss any u have to go back to the start. If the goblin says he has ‘never seen a cart handled so well before’ u know u have got it. When u exit vaults the card is waiting for u. I have the bronze card but the silver and gold is just IMPOSSIBLE even with the walkthrough 👍😀
Woo hooooooo Got a perfect silver run yesterday and the card when I exited. If u the silver was hard the Gold is worse. Pity there are no trophies all u get is a 100% on the memory when u defeat ‘ he who must not be named’ 😉😀
Mannnnnnnnnnn I could talk about this game forever. I got it as a present as a kid and fucking hell what were they on when making this. I mean I love the creativity when making some of these levels but yeahhhhhh. They make getting three coins from your own bank account more challenging that most of the spells. You learn Verdimilious and I swear you get to use it once after the lesson 😂😂 And when did Nearly Headless Nick become a teacher!
The reason Crash and Spyro can have amazing graphics on the ps1 despite having massive levels is because Crash has a fixed camera and linear levels, while Spyro relies on level-of-detail and fog.
It was fun watching you play, but it was way funnier with the editing. I think this game in particular brings a lot of worldbuilding from the books at the same time it does it's own thing. The history was all over the place
I know it that this was a common problem with the PS1's graphics, but here it's really bad. The entire game looks like reality is warping in front of your eyes.
Played this for the first time recently, it’s unique in its own way with the chibi style and mini games but feels much shorter than the pc version. PC is the superior version.
I got the ps1 harry potter bundle so this is literally one of my first gaming memories and wow, it hasn't aged well to others but it will always be sooo fucking nostalgic for me. Top game.
Dang I LOVED this game, even more than the PC one, always seemed a bit more... *magical* due to its many quirks (the Gringotts level was my fav btw, guess I'm a bit of a maso)) Also, playing it as a kid I didn't know any English, so that definitely added to the mystique aspect) Also also, this game was way too expensive in my country so I shoplifted it, got caught, got a major verbal whoopass from the store clerk and the parents, learnt a valuable lesson that stealing was bad, BUT after making us pay for the game they let us keep it, so that's how I got my grabby hands on it. A net win if you ask me :') Anyhoo, looking forward to that Chamber of Secrets review!
Yeah gringotts was definitely a nice touch, even if it was one of the worst experiences in gaming i've ever had in my whole life :) and that's such a good story!
I got this game when I was about 8. Games were very expensive at the time and my parents said they'd only get it for me if I agreed it would be all I got for both my birthday and Christmas that year. Bad decision for me to agree. Playing this game was the first time I realised that video games could suck.
I'm thinking of uploading my old streams to youtube so keep your eyes peeled! I somehow lost the second half of my playthrough of this but still have the first half (my first ever stream!)
@@PhilOfGlimmer Just a heads up, IIRC there's no autosave. If you don't save manually from the menu, the game doesn't save at all. I've actually lost progress due to this.

"Harry chucks his seeds into Hagrid's fire"
Why did that sound dirty? Do I need treatment?
I played this game over and over just for the Gringotts parts and sometimes I can still hear the goblin saying "mine cart" when I least expect it
Crash and Spyro relied on special proprietary solutions to achieve the scale they had in their levels
The PS1 version is the version that I played growing up so this was a trip going back and seeing it

The thing about the first two HP movies. Is that their games were incredible on every console, even on PC.

The faces almost remind me of old medieval paintings or something, they definitely have a weirdly specific charm to them!
The whole castle layout just baffles me. Why do we have to climb on floating tables and over giant platforms just to get to the next class?
Loving these videos - I miss these games SO much!
When you really think about, there are plenty of moments when it doesn't makes sense as a school that you need to learn spells to advance. Like the bird on the table or Verdimilus.

There's always the PS1 version of Chamber of Secrets. Because for some reason they were still making PS1 games in 2002...
The PS1 still had a large install base, so of course they were still making them.
They reused a TON of assets from HP1 for HP2 and the game is shorter anyway so ... eh-meh. It was easy for them to do.
