A very minor correction. The GBA and GBC versions of the game were made by the same studio. More specifically, both were made by the same team of roughly 8 people, working on both at the same time! And they only had about 6 months. That’s right, 8 people made two completely different games with completely different art and gameplay in 6 months. Yes, there are more people listed in the credits, but most of those credits overlap with the PC version of the game, because that team and the PC team were in the same office in neighboring cubicles and the PC team helped out a bit at times. That storybook art shared by the first 4 games were done by two people on the PC team for example. How do I know this? Because I was on the PC team. I made about half the levels for it (though I’m cheating a bit with that count as I made the Quidditch level geometry and am counting that for each of the times it’s used).
Thanks so much for the input, Ben. It's fascinating. Did you have any communication with the PS1 team at Argonaut Games? Or were you lets to make the game completely independently? Also, did you do any work on Chamber of Secrets or the later HP games, or just HP1? Thanks again
@@Flandrew We talked to each other fairly often, and frequently sent builds of the game back and forth. But the designs were done completely independent of each other. The one exception being the Voldemort fight at the end, which I copied (with permission) from an older version of the PS1 game. They changed theirs before release otherwise they would have been completely identical. I only worked on the first title directly, though some of my work from the first game was reused in the second.
omg dude, you were part of the sorcerers stone PC team those first 3 pc HP games were a huge part of my childhood thanks for making a part of my childhood
Oh my gosh, the PC games were the best! They were the only video games apart from a Sabrina the Teenage Witch one we had so my wee sis and I played them to death lol. Our favourite one was Prisoner of Azkaban, did you work on that one too?
For me the PC version is the one. I've replayed it countless times and I still love it. It's a bit simpler compared to Chamber of Secrets but still has its charm. The library sneaking section was the scariest part of any game I played when I was a child.
@@flapjaxattack Same here, but I was able to cure it with a hilarious incident at the start of the second half of that level: when you come back down from the astronomy tower, you can break the vases with Flippendo and Filch will run back across the bridge, and if you time it right you can get caught by him as you jump into the abyss, so I ended up with him saying "Well, well, well, we ARE in trouble now, aren't we?" as Harry literally plummets to his death.
to a modern audience it will feel a bit repetitive/grindy, and also heavy on fetch quests, but to younger players, in 2001, it probably felt like a slam dunk.
Peeves's curse was so annoying and even as a kid, I noticed that Voldy himself can easily be defeated by the Locomotor Mortis + Mucus ad Nauseam combo. Yes, it was amazing.
Harry potter 1 on PC was amazing. I play it each few years and even now that I'm beyond my 30s I still find it incredibly nostalgic. Love it each time; especially the music.
I replayed it last year. The atmosphere and music are indeed incredible. But the gameplay was remarkably bad lol don’t understand why I played it so much as a kid
@@frempy4426 I wouldn't call it bad. Just simple. Clearly aimed at those unfamiliar with computer games. You've got a bit of everything, some of the secrets are actually well hidden and if you hadn't been playing games for the past 2 decades you'd probably not blast through all the platforming in an afternoon.
I love the GBC version. I loved the RPG system and the story details from the book. I always loved that there were parts of the castle that showed up in later stories like the painting of the fruit that leads to the kitchens or the 2nd floor bathroom. It hinted at a bigger world and the things to come. Although, the Chamber of Secrets is definitely the better of the two games
Yey! I'm one of the few who actually owned the GBC version. It was one of the very first GBC games I've ever played. My father let me choose two games when he bought me my GBC, and I picked the GBC Harry Potter 1 and Pokemon Yellow. I loved the RPG interpretation of the game mechanics, and up to this day, the Harry Potter 1 GBC game still holds a special place in my heart.
Although it's been over 20 years since i played the PS1 version, its graphics and sound are still as impressive to me now as it was back in the day. And i'm glad i still feel this way about it.
I remember playing the PS1 version. It certainly have those atmosphere that will linger in your mind decades after playing, nostalgia and even the sentimental values. PS1 Hagrid also one of the rare breed for a character model who hilariously and unintentionally loooked like a horror game character. Oh and Insane Dumbledore definitely an entertaining chap despite only appearing for very brief moment.
The Soundtrack is the reason why I'm still playing these games (TPS, COS, POA) after all these years. COS for PS2 was the first game I've ever played, and I love the PS2/XBOX/GC Versions of TPS, COS and POA. The castle and grounds in these games feel so authentic. In my opinion more authentic than the movies since POA and the games after POA. Everything just seems so much closer to the book.
Fun fact, the composer of the soundtrack is the same guy that did Skyrim! And yes, I wholeheartedly agree, the game (at least the PC version for me) feels so much closer to the book's mood!
The library in HP1 PC is just pure nostalgia. It's also around Christmas and the voice of Filch and the overall aesthetic of the bookcases, just magical!
Fun Fact: in the italian version Hermione and Ron have the same voice actors of their movie counterpart (at least for ps1 and pc version) while in PS2 version also Harry has the same voice actor of the movie
Chamber of Secrets also has a turn based RPG GBC version and it vastly improves on what the first one did. Looks better, has a party system, unique abilities for Harry Ron and Hermione. Definitely a hidden gem.
It’s crazy no one has made a video like this yet. I started looking for this since the announcement of Hogwarts Legacy and only just realized this video is only 2 months old. Very well made. I hope you do another for the other games.
@@Flandrew Prisoner of Azkaban pls, but if my memory serves me right, there was a java mobile game of PoA. If you can find the game or gameplay vids of the game pls include it
Before the book came out, I had literally never heard of a sorcerer's stone. Every time I'd heard about alchemists it was called an elixir of life and how they could supposedly turn lead into gold. If they had just used philosopher's stone here I never would've known the difference.
Well, I guess, her original title was 'philosopher's stone' because she was taking the alchemical line of thinking quite literally with 'stone'. I also believe that 'philosophers' stone' is an old mythological item itself (and this is the proper spelling). I also think elixir was different to the so-called stone. In theory, both titles work -- but 'sorcerer's stone' is actually completely invented just to sell the 'magic' part of the book, I'd guess? I think the UK title is best, but I guess, 'sorcerer' does sound better than 'philosopher' for a children's fantasy story, and maybe to market it better in the US? Nonetheless, the UK title is actually the correct one.
It actually reminds me how even as an eight-year old or however the hell old I was when I first read the book, I thought to myself, "wait, how does a _stone_ do all this?" I mean, I know it's magic but it's just counterintuitive, Rowling should have simply come up with some wizarding cup instead.
@@TheClassicWorld Yeah, and as I'd never heard either term in my entire life up until that point, if they had just used philosopher I never would have known the difference and people would be less confused about there being two titles because there wouldn't be.
I grew up playing the PC version. I sucked at it and could never get past the Quidditch match. Had to get a friend to do it for me so I could continue. I don't even remember if I ever finished it. Anyway, Jeremy Soule's soundtrack is still an atmospheric banger.
I always got stuck at the Fluffy part then two or three years later I played it and was able to beat and then about year after I first I beat I was able to beat it 100% finding all 25 wizard cards. Two years ago, I discovered PS1 port of Philosopher's Stone via emulation and it was basically felt the PC version except even better and playing the PS1 version made me realise how I would have loved playing the PS1 as a teenager especially since I loved playing the PC game but wished it was more challenging. Back then emulation was virtually unknown.
I played the PS1 version and really liked it since I was reading the books, I really liked the atmosphere, even my grandmother enjoyed watching me play it. So much fond memories I will play the 2003 version now =D
Play the 2003 version version as it's the BEST version of the game, Gamecube/Ps2 are CLEARLY the best versions of the game visually and gameplay as they increased and boasted the graphics considerably so the graphics makes the aesthetics come to live beautifully to capture the perfect dark halloween vibe of the rest of the Harry Potter series!
@@baguete02 that’s fantastic to hear! Glad you liked it as it’s one of my favorite Harry Potter games as I grew up with it alongside the Prisoner of Azkaban game which is my favorite! Can’t wait for Hogwarts Legacy! It’s going to be phenomenal!
The PS1 version was localized to my language and the dubs were god tier. Some of the characters even changed voice actor mid dialogue. Legendary stuff. Me and my friends quote some of the lines from the game to this day
I freaked out at the glitches section of the PC version because I remember discovering all of them on my own playing the game 100 times and a huge nostalgia train just smacked into my face. The hyper long jump and the out of bounds glitch during the fire seed quest are my favorites.
Lmfao I don't know the out of bounds glitch but the mega jump on that little mirror/water platform on the wingardium leviosa level was insane. I was so proud for discovering that. You could also do mega jumps in normal stairs while going up. I remember doing it the first time you meet peevs and fall from the book stands, while going back up you could do crazy jumps on the stairs. I miss being a kid
@@Stogiewise yeah I remember super specifically during the fire seeds quest when you come up to that lake guarded by those wooden beams you can jump against a slanted rock in the corner to gain extra height and get over it. I had so much fun walking on the water and into the waterfall. Played the game again recently and tho the molded game I got seemed to have patched they hyper long jump unfortunately, unless I'm just misremembering how to execute it, it didn't patch the out of bounds glitch.
@@SHARDK2 but what do you mean by molded game? You mean it's modified by other players? At least in the original version they can't patch anything xd. Also is that lake that you're talking about the one that has a hidden wizard card on the left side when you enter the lake?
@@Stogiewise I mean it's the PC version with mods such as the strafing mechanic from Chamber of Secrets and other quality of life improvements included. The lake is right before a cave, I think the one where you have to jump up and hop across to an elevated area. There's a waterfall I believe to the left of the cave entrance.
I grew up with the PC version! It's one of the first games I completed 100% (got all the Famous Witch and Wizard Cards), and I still have Jeremy Soule's score etched into my mind. Also I get mild PTSD whenever I think of the levels in the Library with Mr. Filch lmao Edit: also the fcking Bloody Baron scared me too, in the level where you collect the potion ingredients in the dungeons for Snape
I remember on the PC version, during the cutscene right before the final battle there was a moment where you could move Harry while the camera wasn't pointed toward him. I would always hold the back key to make harry walk backwards, then when the camera changed to show him stepping back, he would be several feet away and pass through the stairs behind him.

this is best comparison video i have ever seen. i cant find any video source side by side like 3-5 years ago about this hp games but you are nailed this for us bro keep it up.
Harry potters and the philosopher’s stone was one of the first game so I ever played! I had it on pc, and I still have incredibly fond memories of it. I probably replayed it over a dozen times lmao.
Hey, don’t knock the GBC version. I have to disagree with you about Hogwarts though as it had all the floors, classrooms etc. Only the PS2 versions seemed to have that level of detail.
4:34 Funny thing is that some of the British VAs from these games went on to do voices for FFXIV. I was shocked to discover Singingway was voiced by Umbridge and the Mrs. Black portrait (Rachel Atkins) and Allan Corduner who voiced Snape for the adaptations of the first four movies voiced Midgardsormr (and somewhat more fittingly, Quintus van Cinna)
This was super great. I always thought the GBC one was super cool, the PS2 one the most interesting (and actually pretty uncommon; it fetches decent prices) but the PSX one will always be how I imagine Harry Potter 1.
You're saying that mainly because you grew up with that, right? Don't get me wrong, I also LOVE the way how the PS1 Harry Potter looks from the graphics, boxart, and all the promotional material to it all as it all has that "classic" early 2000s look which was perfectly amazing for the Playstation at the time and still gives me nostalgia feels when looking at it, But the Gamecube/Ps2 are CLEARLY the best versions of the game "Harry Potter 1" visually as they increased and boasted the graphics considerably so the graphics makes the aesthetics come to live beautifully to capture the perfect dark halloween vibe of the rest of the series!
@@Gadget-Walkmen Sure there's nostalgia but you have to remember two things a. The PS2 game came out in 2003, well after the original games came. b. It was not all that common. Even now, the PS2 Happy Potter 1 is one of the more valuable games in the PS2 market in PAL. By the time it hit shelves, it kind of just disappeared. c. At no point did I say HP1 on PSX was the best game. I simply said it was what I imagined when I thought HP1 video games.
@@YukeWeiss fair enough, that’s a good enough take. Not about the Ps2 Harry Potter 1 being that valuable tho, I had the GameCube and it was fairly common.
@@YukeWeiss Jesus, no wonder I never knew there was a PS2 version of the game. Just looked it up and it's at least £50 for any platform for that version
I grew up with the Gamecube version of the game... I'm still amazed to this day that there were so many different takes on the books/movies. Shamefully I didn't get to play many others in the series since it was so popular at the time. Though I do not know if some of these games aged very well, putting aside the grooviest walking cycle in GBC. Seriously, how does he move with such style and grace?
I don't know how he moves with such style and grace, but you can tell by the way he uses his walk that he's a woman's man. He doesn't even have time to talk.
I'm glad you mentionned the 6th Gen HP1 games being released in 2003 rather than 2001. The game originally didn't make the deadlines, and the assets were repurposed to make HP2 in 2002. Somehow they had to cut costs and put HP2 for PS2 on CDs that bear very long load times for very small level sections, and only one language at once. Despite that, HP2 PS2 still remains the best looking one and the least buggy. (GC/XBox version is full of differences, and generally looks worse for better framerate ) HP1 6th gen ultimately reused the HP2 assets, but in truth these were HP1's originally, and for some reason the quality went down once more ( compare the staircase and the park outside, the models are the same but the lighting is just way off ), with broken sound effects aswell. At least, that game's on DVD and removes all the pain and suffering of the long load times HP2 PS2 had. Also, big issue with HP1 on PS1, is that once you finish the story, there's no going back to your savefile for anything more than Quidditch matches. Else, you're greeted with a creepy laugh from Voldy... So if you want to 100% you must not miss a single secret, and, ho-boy, not miss a single coin in the gringotts sections. PAIN. HP2 PS1 would fix this issue with Creevey's Photo Album. When you finish the game you are secluded to the common room and its secret access to duels, but the Album can be used to replay any section of the game and even shows you if you collected the level's Wizerd Card or not. HP2 on GBC also improved on its predecessor by featuring what you hoped for, a party of up to 3 characters, graphics show a bit more faithfulness, and you are encouraged to replay the game multiple times to try different decks of Wizard cards that are used here as special attacks. It does suffer tho from points-of-no-return that can be annoying if you aren't leveled enough to get through the final boss. Well, I suppose you're going to tackle some of that in a future video? Best of luck if you do!
Great details! Thanks for the info. Just out of interest, where did you find out that hp1 for ps2 was originally delayed and then reused for hp2. I always thought they wanted to wait for Xbox and GameCube to launch in Europe in 2002 to release the sixth gen games
@@Flandrew A general rule in gaming is that speedrunning communities are some of the most knowledgeable people with the series they run, and that's precisely where I asked, as a speedrunner myself of another series. It seems HP2 6th gen contains unused stuff that would have been intended for HP1, but I can't recall what exactly. When comparing HP2 PS2 to GC/XBox, you're going to come accross way too many differences to list them in a video, but you can boil it down to this: PS2: Pros: Better lighting and ambient colors, whispers of the spells can be heard when assigned. Harry casts a real-time shadow. You can freeroam everywhere outside the castle, on foot and broom. Cons: framerate is halved to 30/25 depending on region, and skips when performing a spell ( vertex lighting calculations especially for Lumos ) Game is on CD, and as such is limited to 660MB of space. Only one language per disc, load times are very slow, at numerous places, and make the PS2 very noisy. Prefects are present in more areas and run quicker to Harry, making stealth significantly harder. GC/XBox: Pros: framerate is 60/50 fps constantly, spells don't lag at all on XBox ( but reduced particles ). Prefects guard far fewer places, and walk even when you're spotted. Load times are considerably faster on DVD/Mini-disc. Cons: Graphics are more washed out, desaturated. Outside the castle is divided into areas that Harry must fast-travel to on foot, with bushes/barriers blocking the way to open fields. You can only freeroam on broom and land on valid locations. And multiple other sound/graphic/cutscene differences are spread all across, making HP2 the most "same but different" multiplatform same-gen game I know of. If you emulate the PS2 game for recording, use Software renderer to show the superior graphics accurately. Or, if you want HD resolution with Hardware renderers, you need to have Frame Buffer Conversion on, Mipmaps on, and Blending Accuracy set on High-Very High. That gets rid of most graphical innacuracies. PCSX2 ver.1.7.2 nightly builds should perfectly support those features, whereas older stable releases are far glitchier. For the other version, Dolphin for GC is all you need with no particular settings, and it can represent XBox due to them being almost identical. That's all I have to say. Good luck in your HP2 researches!
PC was the one that I played and have nostalgia for. Some of the later games were pretty good as well. I remember loving the Chamber Of Secrets GBC game, and the Prisoner Of Azkaban GBA game
I just started the PS1 version. I want a count on how many times they say flipendo. I love this. I can’t believe I missed all these flipendos all these years
Admittedly out of nostalgia, I love the GBC versions the most. I remember almost 20 years ago playing the Sorceror's Stone GBC version on my GBA SP, since the GBA SP can play GBC cartridges. I think I finished it but was unable to finish the Chamber of Secrets GBC version. Long story short, I had to give those games away and so I hadn't played them since then. However it wasn't until just last year where I was able to get my hands on the Sorceror's Stone again and replay it. Brought back so many fun memories. I hope to get the Chamber of Secrets again soon, and this time finish it!
@@dbs1013 Great suggestion, but I feel like I'd want the physical copy to play on my Gameboy again just to recreate that magic elementary school-aged me experienced
Does anyone else remember getting a demo copy of the PC version? I went to see the movie at the cinema and they gave me a free copy of the disk where you could play up to a certain point. It's been so long ago now though I can't really recall what it was like.
I had something like this, but I think mine was an extra on the DVD of the movie. So it was a demo of a roughly six month old game at the time. I think the demo went up to the end of the flipendo spell challenge.
It can be hard to hear criticism of media that I have a ton of nostalgia for, but I think your critiques were very fair. In the PS2 game's defense, I think it is far superior to its predecessor, the Chamber of Secrets PS2 game.
The PS2 game’s of philosopher’s stone doesn’t need any defense as it’s a great game all around and easily the best one out of all them from being fantastic but all the Harry Potter games for Philosopher’s stone are at most good games! And the Ps2 of philosopher’s stone isn’t “far superior” at all to that of Chamber of Secrets Ps2 game, their overall the same as a whole but with philosopher’s stone being a little bit better for Ps2/GameCube from the improvements that’s been made and could have been done which WAS. Their both great games of their respective source material, Entirely so!
Funny thing is that I seemingly recall the Flippendo Knockback Jinx not existing in the series up to that point, yet it’s been seemingly accepted as a canon spell to the point that you can purchase it as a “red” spell in both LEGO Harry Potter games from Wiseacres Wizarding Supplies alongside the Every Flavor Bean spell from the LEGO Creator Harry Potter PC game. I love it that Traveller’s Tales added these spells from other Harry Potter games into their LEGO games by the way. 😜
I distinctly remember the gameplay from the PS2 version, but I could never figure out which part of the series it actually was until now! Thank you very much!
I played the GBC game so many times. Being able to replay and collect all the cards and keep your levels from before. The game was insane when it came out
I loved the Gamecube version as a kid! As you pointed out, you can explore the castle and the grounds on broomstick, which is something my brother and I spent hours on!
I grew up with the pc version and omg the wave of emotion that came over me when you started talking about it… I’ve gotta find a way of playing it again, that and black and white 2
I do hope you'll also cover Chambers of secrets and prisoner of Azkaban. Those first three are the ones I am most nostalgic for The RPG for the 3rd installment was actually pretty fun. I might have to check out the RPG for the first one as it is clearly the same
I liked the Gameboy RPG for PoA as well, although it annoyed me that you couldn't walk around Hogwarts without being attacked in a corridor by some random creature. Chamber of Secrets for the GBA felt much more like a real place, despite having fewer NPCs, because it let me explore.
OH MY GOSH THE MEMORIES!!! my sisters and I all shared a copy of the pc game as children and we spent the entire time goofing off at much as possible. One of our favorite pastimes was "people catching", where you would stand at a specific spot in the Great Hall to bump into students as they walked down the hall, pushing scores of them into the same corner where they would keep walking into the wall forever until we got bored or the game started to crash. It was a RIOT. We were also OBSESSED with the gnomes, we named the ones that lived around the castle and let them attack us so we could give them our beans. We also found out that there was a glitch that caused beans left on the ground for too long to "blow up" and expand and clip through the terrain, it ROCKED This was the only one of the Harry Potter pc games that we couldn't beat, we kept trying to get our dad to help us defeat Quirrel but he was just as hopeless as we were
I always remember playing the PC Version all the way from '04 to now and still enjoy even with all the issues.. but I've found pretty much every single secret and can pretty much speedrun the game as well as the other games.
Really nice video. Nice to see someone finally cover all the versions, without pretending there is only one :) I grew up playing PS1, PS2 and PC versions and I have to say the PS1 is my favorite, because it has the most enjoyable gameplay. The PC version is stiff and the PS2 one is unnecessarily difficult and kinda boring
That was a great video! My personal favorite is the PC version, as I played it countless times when I was younger, but I also played the Gameboy Color version ALOT. I did hit a wall at some point though and couldn't progress as I was too young and stupid. The PS2/Xbox/Gamecube Version were totally new to me though, I didn't even though they existed! Really hope for more videos like this from you :)
I played the PC version first and Gameboy Advance around the same time. I remember being disappointed that it wasn’t on GameCube because I had one. Then being confused when it did come out 2 years later, but by then I wasn’t invested enough to go back.
Another awesome video & overall comparison! 😄👍👍 the PC versions of PoS & CoS were among the very first games I played on my first ever PC which I was given on Christmas Day of 2002. Since my birthday is on the 28th of December my mum decided to say it was both my Xmas & b-day present. 🖥 I remember my 11 year old self enjoying both of them immensely to the point where both my mum & grandmother didn’t hear a peep out of me all day. 😄🦉🏰🪄🦁🦡🦅🐍 Cheers to you, my man! 🥃🥃
The PC version left an indelible mark on my video game tasts, I think. Adore how the Hogwarts feels, sounds, looks there, even as I know a lot of that is nostalgia. I remember whispering ghosts sometimes quietly sounding, and it creeping me out - made Hogwarts feel both creepy and beautiful and old, all at the same time. Despite the JKR situation, these games mean a lot to me- as a lonely kid who often daydreamed about being at Hogwarts, they helped a lot during my childhood.
That was a great video! I definitely have more nostalgic memories of the PS1 version. Since that was the one I played growing up. In fact I think I even remember my dad renting it for me from Blockbusters.
Actually them resusing the assets and level designs of the previous games is what I loved about it. It made it feel like you're returning to hogwarts in each game.
Getting this on my front page now and idk what took youtube so long this is literally mh favorite content. Love when ppl talk about the harry potter games and your an absolute sexy beast for doing this full comparison! I grew up with the PC version which has stayed my favorite even since playing them all. Loved your commentary on the soundtrack though! Its one of my favorites. Hope you make this a series and play the second and third ones. Maybe the 4th.
I played the PS1, Game Boy Color and original Xbox versions of this game and all of them are awesome. I didn't play the Xbox version till years later though because I didn't realize that it actually came out after Chamber of Secrets on Xbox.
@@Flandrew yeah I chalked it up to the 03 release that you mentioned. By the time it came out I was already moving on to the Chamber of Secrets game and didn't even realize it existed until like 6 years ago LOL.
I played the GBA version as a kid, but never finished it. I got stuck in a section where he was trying to sneak around at night and dodge prefects? I kept getting spotted and could never figure out what to do. Anyone remember that part?
Honestly I enjoyed all of these as a kid. I knew how to emulate stuff early on so I managed to play through the gba and gbc games when I was like 9. The pc is one of the first games I played ever so theres bias there, and eventually I got a ps2 so I got my parents to buy me the ps1 game. I only recently got my hands on the 2003 game and honestly I had a blast with it. Got an og xbox copy cuz it was the cheapest. Cant say any of them were a bad time
The GameCube version of this is seriously nostalgic to me. I started gaming in the later 0s, at 16. I picked this up at Blockbuster in their sale bin along with Chamber of Secrets and, later, goblet of fire. I never finished it but wow, what memories!
I played the PS1 version, albeit without a memory card so I had to try to smash through it in one day, and I have so many good memories of it. Gonna have to try to hunt down the 2003 updated version
I grew up with a pirated PC version from a local market lol. Never got to finish it before my older brother uninstalled it cause we had a tiny hard drive. I remember crying so much so my mum took me to get the PS2 version, honestly a memory I'll never forget.
These games are fascinating to me. They're such a time capsule. They would be drastically different if they were made any other year under any different circumstances, assuming they would be made at all. It was around the transitional period between console and handheld generations, AND the technology was still at a state where the different gaming platforms were much more noticeably different from each other than they are today, AND because WB was counting on Harry Potter becoming a massive franchise with all types of merchandise, AND movie tie-in games were still common, it wasn't just reasonable, but EXPECTED for there to be this many different versions.
I had 0 recollection of ever playing the GBC version until I saw that footage. I think I actually played that one on my mp3 player with rockbox on a glorious 1.8 inch display 15+ years ago. Man that takes me back in time. Not sure if I finished that one but I played the PC versions to death. The first three games on the PC still hold such a nostalgic value to me.
@Flanadrew restored version is a mod that add some things to the game like the dursey house, diagon alley, walk around one car of the hogwarts express, add the grandstaircase hub from hp2, foribbiden forest at night and some duel during before the final part of the game with Mallory. There not actual spoken dialog during these sections.
My favorite due to nostalgia is definitely the PS1 version. Also I'm surprised you didn't mention Jeremy Soule's involvement in the Elder Scrolls, since that's where most people know him from.
You sold me, Mr. nostalgia merchant! The PS1 version was my very first PS1 game, I think my parents got the console in a bundle with it. Really fond memories, I remember the game as very atmospheric and diverse. And I specifically remember hating Quidditch, I struggled even with the tutorial, lol. Also, the library section alwayw creeped me out as a kid
Hey, awesome video, duder, a great midnight watch while I should be sleeping. I personally played the PC version so if there's anyone I'll come back to, it's that one for sure. I always remember getting so scared with the Peeves jumpscare through out the game, I always had to close my eyes and scream loudly to drown it out as a child
I didn't own a good PC back then, so the versions I played were the GBC and the PS1 ones. I must say, the PS1 version to this day still fills me with joy every time I replay it. I remember my friends and I used to play and pretend we were in hogwarts. We created our herbology and charms books and we attended classes where one of us would play as the teacher. I remember vividly that my friends relied on me to create the challenges and puzzles for those classes, and I must credit that game for sparking my imagination. Eventually I got to play the PS2 versions of the first 3 books and I must say they blew my mind. Just the fact that you could cast spells at will, and seeing your robe swaying with the wind were huge things back in the day, specially for a little kid used to SNES and PS1 games. Much later, early 2010s, I played the PC version and damn. I am sad I didn't play it back in the day. It might be the better version between the PC and the PS1 versions. However, the PS1 one will always stay with me.
The PS1 version might not the best but it's the one I think and hold vividly into my memory. It was just so mysterious and oddly haunting to play with.
I was wondering why the PS1 Hagrid meme didn't bring back any memory for me, since I loved that game so much as a kid. I played the PC version and never knew there were more than 1 version of the game. Very interesting video!
I was just trying to decide between the Xbox and pc version. I knew they were a bit different, but I had no idea. Thank you for this detailed comparison. I found it informative and entertaining.
I only worked on the first title directly, though some of my work from the first game was reused in the second.
omg dude, you were part of the sorcerers stone PC team
those first 3 pc HP games were a huge part of my childhood
thanks for making a part of my childhood
Oh my gosh, the PC games were the best! They were the only video games apart from a Sabrina the Teenage Witch one we had so my wee sis and I played them to death lol. Our favourite one was Prisoner of Azkaban, did you work on that one too?
Oh I just saw your other reply! Well done, your levels live fondly in the memories of 00 kids
For me the PC version is the one. I've replayed it countless times and I still love it. It's a bit simpler compared to Chamber of Secrets but still has its charm. The library sneaking section was the scariest part of any game I played when I was a child.
That was indeed scary back then.
I still have nightmares that contain avoiding Mr. Filch in libraries as ptsd from back then 🤣
@@flapjaxattack exactly. Yay yay yay caught you Mr. Potter 😂😂😂
"Uh-huh, eh-heh? What's thaaaaaaaaaat???"
The GBC Version is absolutely amazing.
to a modern audience it will feel a bit repetitive/grindy, and also heavy on fetch quests, but to younger players, in 2001, it probably felt like a slam dunk.
I could never get past Flitwick's class. -_-'
CoS on the GBC was the shit though.
Peeves's curse was so annoying and even as a kid, I noticed that Voldy himself can easily be defeated by the Locomotor Mortis + Mucus ad Nauseam combo.
Yes, it was amazing.
one of the systems best
Oh good. I found that game in a bargain bin in my local retro shop for a few dollars.
Harry potter 1 on PC was amazing. I play it each few years and even now that I'm beyond my 30s I still find it incredibly nostalgic. Love it each time; especially the music.
I replayed it last year. The atmosphere and music are indeed incredible. But the gameplay was remarkably bad lol don’t understand why I played it so much as a kid
tell me your secrets on how to play it i crave this game so much!
@@frempy4426 I wouldn't call it bad. Just simple. Clearly aimed at those unfamiliar with computer games. @@dopaminecloud You make a good point! I suppose that was my experience as a kid lol

YES, i loved the gbc version of chamber of secrets, such a fun rpg game
was probably my favorite harry potter game growing up
u r not the only one
Chambers Of Secrets was one of the first RPGs I actually beat. It was amazing.
Although it's been over 20 years since i played the PS1 version, its graphics and sound are still as impressive to me now as it was back in the day.
And i'm glad i still feel this way about it.
This was awesome dude! Any chance you will do a similar comparison for Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban in the future?
I really hope he does. There is not video like this for either of those or this game and that’s just insane to me.
Hope so too
on the third game its still pc and ps/gc versions being different but they are both great with the PS2 HP3 being one of the best licensed games ever
Looking forward to that.
@@cheddargt he just uploaded the one for CoS
Interesting. I think they started using some of the English actors for the later games
Chamber of Secrets also has a turn based RPG GBC version and it vastly improves on what the first one did. Looks better, has a party system, unique abilities for Harry Ron and Hermione. Definitely a hidden gem.

Anyway, Jeremy Soule's soundtrack is still an atmospheric banger.
oh my god i was stuck at the quidditch part for months!
I was absolutely obsessed with the game boy colour version as a kid! That music lives RENT FREE in my head to this day and still slaps
I played the PS1 version and really liked it since I was reading the books, I really liked the atmosphere, even my grandmother enjoyed watching me play it. So much fond memories

@@Gadget-Walkmen Sure there's nostalgia but you have to remember two things

When comparing HP2 PS2 to GC/XBox, you're going to come accross way too many differences to list them in a video, but you can boil it down to this:
PS2:
Pros: Better lighting and ambient colors, whispers of the spells can be heard when assigned.
Harry casts a real-time shadow.
You can freeroam everywhere outside the castle, on foot and broom.
Cons: framerate is halved to 30/25 depending on region, and skips when performing a spell ( vertex lighting calculations especially for Lumos )
Game is on CD, and as such is limited to 660MB of space. Only one language per disc, load times are very slow, at numerous places, and make the PS2 very noisy.
Prefects are present in more areas and run quicker to Harry, making stealth significantly harder.
GC/XBox:
Pros: framerate is 60/50 fps constantly, spells don't lag at all on XBox ( but reduced particles ).

GBA version had a great ambience, it was scary, almost like a horror game
That Escape Snape level. *Shudders*
Thankyou for making this, always wondered what the other versions were like!
the third one was my favourite game as a kid, loved the ps2 version so much.
I grew up on the GBA versions and I LOVED them, the Quidditch was awesome. Chamber of Secrets was a great improvement

I played the GBC game so many times. Being able to replay and collect all the cards and keep your levels from before.

I do hope you'll also cover Chambers of secrets and prisoner of Azkaban. Those first three are the ones I am most nostalgic for
The RPG for the 3rd installment was actually pretty fun. I might have to check out the RPG for the first one as it is clearly the same
Thanks and watch this space
I liked the Gameboy RPG for PoA as well, although it annoyed me that you couldn't walk around Hogwarts without being attacked in a corridor by some random creature. Chamber of Secrets for the GBA felt much more like a real place, despite having fewer NPCs, because it let me explore.
It’s always interesting to see the different versions of these old games.
I played the PC version of the Philosopher's Stone, and I have to say, it brings back memories ^^
We also found out that there was a glitch that caused beans left on the ground for too long to "blow up" and expand and clip through the terrain, it ROCKED
This was the only one of the Harry Potter pc games that we couldn't beat, we kept trying to get our dad to help us defeat Quirrel but he was just as hopeless as we were
I always remember playing the PC Version all the way from '04 to now and still enjoy even with all the issues.. but I've found pretty much every single secret and can pretty much speedrun the game as well as the other games.

Really nice video. Nice to see someone finally cover all the versions, without pretending there is only one :)
I grew up playing PS1, PS2 and PC versions and I have to say the PS1 is my favorite, because it has the most enjoyable gameplay.
Cheers to you, my man!
Yeah, it seems like the xbox/ps2/gamecube version kind of slipped by a lot of people when it was first released
Cant say any of them were a bad time
You monster! It was like you stole food right from out of Rowling's mouth! How was she to survive with you pirating her games?! ;...;
12:49 the fact they were able to make like a transparency effect like that on GBC is actually really cool
PS1 Hagrid is best Hagrid.
Oh boy this made me laugh, especially that last line. Thank you for that
I had 0 recollection of ever playing the GBC version until I saw that footage. I think I actually played that one on my mp3 player with rockbox on a glorious 1.8 inch display 15+ years ago. Man that takes me back in time. Not sure if I finished that one but I played the PC versions to death. The first three games on the PC still hold such a nostalgic value to me.
Fun fact, Jeremy Soule also composed the music for Skyrim!
I have only played the pa1 and pc version. Love the pc version . Currently playing restored content version on pc somewhat enjoying it.
I’ve never heard about the reworded content version. What’s different about it?
@Flanadrew restored version is a mod that add some things to the game like the dursey house, diagon alley, walk around one car of the hogwarts express, add the grandstaircase hub from hp2, foribbiden forest at night and some duel during before the final part of the game with Mallory. There not actual spoken dialog during these sections.
RUclips recommended this and you immediately got me to subscribe. Excellent video. Hoping for more in a similar vein.
God…I wish it was 2004 again.
I'm glad someone made this video!
I played the PS1 and PC Version. I think they both have their goods moments, but I personally prefer the PC Version.
Clearly the PS1 version is the superior version due to the fact that Hagrid looks like a mountain.
Just started watching your channel! Great Content! These games actually reminds me of my childhood! Keep up the great work! 🙌
Hogwarts Legacy will be the first game developed by people who grew up with Harry Potter.
I always assumed the K in Knuts was silent.
Glad this came up on my recommended list, subscribed!
Pc version is just the best
It's just on another level
you're cleary ps1 biased
Yeah ...best aesthetics on ps1 ?
what is he smoking
You're clearly PC biased
PS1 is the best, you're clearly PC biased.
I was wondering why the PS1 Hagrid meme didn't bring back any memory for me, since I loved that game so much as a kid. I played the PC version and never knew there were more than 1 version of the game. Very interesting video!
That's Fantastic Man!, I do Remember Playing The 1st Harry Potter PC and Console versions, and they are Fun.😄
I was just trying to decide between the Xbox and pc version. I knew they were a bit different, but I had no idea. Thank you for this detailed comparison. I found it informative and entertaining.
