  • Did you know the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban had 3 completely unique version from different developers? This game came out on 5 platforms back in the day (PC/PS2/XBOX/GameCube/GBA) and in this video, I'm going to compare every one of them.

    To me this was the end of the Harry Potter trilogy of games. I say that because the first three feel very similar and seem like a combination of not only the books content but the movies as well. Every game after this was strictly based on the movies for the most part and even the likenesses of the characters were straight from the film's where as the first three have a more stylized look.

      Goblet of Fire on the PS2 was just a load of battles on a painfully linear path. That was when I knew the golden age of HP games was over.

      @@penguinthepurple yeah I agree. I did enjoy order the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince but even those were shorter in length than the original Three and despite being able to go all over Hogwarts those where somewhat smaller then the first three as well. And don't even get me started on the terrible Deathly Hallows games. Hopefully Hogwarts Legacy will live up to the original Three.

    - Standing around casting the ice spell as Hermione all over the place, just because it looked cool. (no pun intended)
    - A fun duelling minigame against two teams, though it would sometime softlock and the next duel would never start.
    - Ron getting knocked down by Buckbeak every time he approached him. I didn't think it was possible to fly with Ron.
    - The music when Filch catches you, alongside his unsettling laugh. I hated those stealth missions.

Goblet of fire feels more arcade based and I'm not too sure what the response is for that game but I remembered enjoying the gamecube version as it was overall fun as a whole.

    I think the canon explanation as to why you can't use the broom was that since Sirius Black is at large they put a spell on Hogwarts' grounds so that no one can fly into the castle by broom.
    Thus why you have to rely on Buckbeak

    • @silentwraithuk
      @silentwraithuk 2 года назад +6

      That realistically wouldn't make sense, Otherwise in the Movie or Book, they wouldn't have been able to do Quidditch as the Quidditch Stadium is on Hogwarts Grounds. I just think The Dev's wanted to simplify the game's mechanics and add Buckbeak who is more related to the Story, and it would save them having to add 2 Forms of flight, as that would make Buckbeak redundant as a mechanic. as getting all the Potion Ingredients would be much simpler. and Don't forget, Harry loses his Broom in November 1993, which is when he falls off his broom and drifts to the whomping willow, so making a Broom Mechanic for this game when Harry loses it 3 Months into his School Year would again be a bit useless and a waste, as it wouldn't explain why he'd have a Firebolt in the other games, If they actually explain that in the others, I don't remember.

    • @bronzin1445
      @bronzin1445 2 года назад +2

      That and the firebolt was confiscated by Professor Mcgonagall for a complete tear down and spell strip as it was suspected that Black sent Harry the broom, which he did but not for any malicious reasons.
      In the movie, Harry didn’t get the firebolt until the very last scene

    • @Gadget-Walkmen
      @Gadget-Walkmen 2 года назад +6

      @@silentwraithuk What the top comment said DOESN'T make any sense, at all as it's not true. There is no canon explanation at all, for the game just simply wanted people to use buckbeak than the broom. That's all, so the OP comment is not valid at all and no idea where he got it at all.
      As for how he got the "firebolt", they just simply don't explain it at all as the game isn't considered with flying brooms unlike the goblet of fire book, game, and movie, which NEEDS the broom for obvious reasons.

    Thank you for this video, I love this opus SO MUCH!! I started with the PS2 version but got stuck at the Hinkypunks challenge in the Muggles Study classroom, so I went to the GBA version and it was a blast! Then I pulled myself together, beat the Hinkypunks and finished the PS2 version. Overall, I love them both equally. The music, the graphics, the voice acting were all awesome and made of Jeremy Soule one of my favorite video game composers. In the end, I simply play sometimes a ROM of the GBA version on my phone because it's more accessible and the speed-up option makes it easier to grind and level up the spells and abilities.

    The PS2 of Azkaban was my favorite growing up because it took aspects from Chamber of Secrets but with the unique abilities of Ron and Hermione required to complete. It is frustrating to some but I think it was excellent gameplay and I wish they continued this in future games. The competition between developers is why these games were the pinnacle of the HP franchise. Can't wait for Hogwarts Legacy.

    I really like that they use Hermione for squeezing into small spaces. I think it's because it's the kind of thing you wouldn't usually think about, it's kinda cute, and it humanizes her, unlike the movies which turn her more than often into just a strict smart person. It's like yeah, she's "the smart one," but she can help in other ways, too.

    • @Gadget-Walkmen
      @Gadget-Walkmen 2 года назад +1

      lol just not with your nonsense saying that movies haven’t humanized Hermione at all, because they HAVE as she’s WAY more than just a “strict smart person” in the films as she’s a well rounded character and person in the film adaptations. Your completely wrong saying this nonsense about “unlike the movies” which is completely not true as she’s WAY more than “the smart one” in the films. You’re not at all proving that you paid attention to the films if you really that’s just smart because ALL the characters in the movies are humanized in their own way as they showcase their strengths and weaknesses! That’s what makes the Harry Potter films fantastic and a phenomenal film series!

I'm not sure of the later games that I didn't play but am curious to see what changed for them. It's funny, I distinctly remember the HP games being in the Education section of my local Best Buy and at the time my parents would never get me games unless they were educational in some way. Luckily they weren't too bright either so I was able to get away with them buying me these games just for being in that section.

    I love this series so far. I played PoA on the PS2 and this video was a trip memory and nostalgia lane. As a kid I always enjoyed freeroaming and I loved this game so much. So much things to explore. My most fun memory however is the dueling club. I loved playing that minigame. There was this one mission however you could have mentioned for the funny. It was the mission where Harry gets out of the hospital wing to follow a disguised Malfoy to the dungeons. You can in fact in that mission go to the Great Hall and randomly start a dueling match. I found it amazing and funny to see Harry duel in the middle of the night in his pyjamas with a group of other kids we don't know lol.

    I remember that a local furniture store hat PlayStations set up with with HP3 running and it was the most amazing day trip my parents could possibly take me on - when I got the game for PC though, I was more than puzzled about how different the game was, I expected it to be the exact same with different controls, which was a little sad at first, but over the time HP3 became THE perfect childhood game for me. It was modern enough to have a reasonable player convenience (e.g. returning everywhere, unlike HP1 PC where you missed a card and you're fucked) and run stable, yet had contained so much charm of early 2000's games. I still play through it nowadays on a boring afternoon and I think children today would still have an amazing time with the game when they just read the books.

  • @Gungho73
    @Gungho73 Год назад

    I've only just started watching your channel the other day due to a random recc by youtube, but I ADORE this type of series retrospective for multiple reasons! For one, I was the kid who grew up wanting to play the weird kinda different games that everyone dismissed, so I was constantly in rummage bins at the local game shop trying to grab me a copy of something people played 2-5 hours and put away forever. I love looking at something like DKC on the game boy color and recognizing how visually awful it is, but also how impressive it is as a port in some ways.
    In addition, I worked in game testing for a time. So while I can't openly discuss many projects I may/may not of worked on, I thought the idea of a game hitting multiple skus and being different in ways (either to make up for hardware differences or being a later version) was always exciting in that "I found the television that breaks the game if you go in a particular line from first boot to it that doesn't exist in other versions" way.
    The eras these HP games existed on are a great testing ground for new ideas and innovations. They also at times feel like the last era in which major and midlevel developers took risks with projects objectively, even if that's not inherently true. To see those points potentially coalesce on licensed games, often the weakest and safest projects nowadays, is utterly fascinating. Can't imagine what this looks like to a newer younger gamer just getting to understand the industry.

In hindsight it seems like it was better than it had any right being, but strangely I've never met anyone who also played these HP games. I like this independent developer style. I played the GBA version countless times and sometimes would replay the file more than once a day until I was proto speedrunning it by knowing what to do quickly. One of the first non Pokemon RPGs I understood enough to finish way back. Probably helped me understand Final Fantasy 1 on Dawn of Souls better, but 2 I could never get far in. That was also the only Harry Potter game I actually owned. It's interesting to see it was a sort of grand finale to a trilogy in its own way.
