    i understand its cheap to reuse assets, but for me as a kid it was comforting to see familiar locations, especially how the castles were pretty much the same in the first two games, it really felt like going back to the same school

    • @sethbuscus
      @sethbuscus Год назад +62

      I'm gonna be honest who cares if you reuse assets. Game development isnt exactly easy and why remake everything?

    • @lucaskp16
      @lucaskp16 Год назад +16

      @@sethbuscus is not about easy or hard. is a full price game. so if it was made with half the effort why pay the same price. i agree that re using the same location is a good thing but then I expect to see a lot of extra new ones since they saved a lot of time, and as always the critics always go to the companies not the devs themselves since they don't make many decision in games like this where every suit from the game studio and the movie studio are putting their hands in.

    • @Predated2
      @Predated2 Год назад +14

      @@lucaskp16 60% of the game is the game's engine and code behind it. Sequels are made with almost 100% copies of the games engine. Reusing visual assets is just a means to save time. Then a LOT of time is placing in dialogue(or even hiring voice actors, takes a lot of time too).
      As for "a lot of new extras since they saved a lot of time", it also means they can save a lot of money in development and invest in the company itself to create better games in the future. They are still their own entire game. You could buy game 1 while someone else buys game 2, and both have roughly equal amounts of hours of work. Yet game 2 and game 1 have 70% of data on the cartridges overlapping, but the remaining 30% makes them entirely different games and takes the most work of all.
      Then you also have the aspect of deadlines where games are sometimes released incomplete(yes, even back in those days) because the devs didnt have time to hone in the extra stuff. A good example is Arkham Knight, they reused a lot of assets from Arkham City and maybe gave them a different skin, but they were absolutely necessary. There is still a lot of cut content in there that would have made it if they could have saved more time.

      @@sethbuscus I don't innately have a problem with this, either -- if the games are so closely linked and on the same system, anyway. Not so good to re-use something from HP1 PS1 for HP4 on PS3, though. That would be lazy to the point of game-breaking.
      My real issue with this game, by the looks of it, is the general laziness and insane amount of silliness without really capturing the core of the book/movie: adventure and danger. The first one did a better job of this! The PS1 version of HP2 looks pretty bad, sadly. I'm sure it's fine for 10-year-olds, though. Not nearly as much charm as HP1, and way too many 'do this mini-game' without any real gameplay/adventure going on. The whole vomit part and such is just bad and lazy game design by the looks of it. Not that funny or interesting at all.
      Of course, one could say that since they reused assets heavily, why would they bother to create anything else new and worthy? I cannot speak to their motives and such, however -- but it was lazy, overall, even if their intention was to make it fun and not too different. It kind of failed in every way other than being just like HP1 only worse, but that's not very impressive to be the same but worse. That's common.
      I hear good things about HP3, though! For now, I shall stick to HP1, which I still love and have yet to beat after 17 years! I feel old. But, I do love this game. Final going to complete it today/tomorrow and record it, too. (Long story short, by the way, I almost completed it about 10 years ago at age 16, but my big brother game in and took the PS1 before I could save it right near the end. I never got around to doing it again, and have played it a few times since, but never that far. I think, by now, part of me wants to never complete it... but now, I really am in the mood to finally complete it, haha. As a kid, I was not very good, and never got beyond Gringotts, I do not think. But, endless hours of fun on the early game, many times over as a kid.)
      After that, I shall play HP2-7 and the LEGO ones. In the mood for HP games now, for some reason. Some of them look good/interesting, such as the GameBoy versions of 1-3. Some are costly here (North of England), but others are cheap, so that's nice. :)

Like those people put so much love and details into these games. And I actually really love that they took some freedom and added things that weren't in the books and movies. Like they make Hogwarts feel alive, making every floor unique, even adding bathrooms and a lot of useless rooms (like that music room or that muggle studies room with the tv). They don't serve a purpose for the game, but those things make Hogwarts feel incredibly realistic and when I played this as a child they influenced how I imagined the school quite a lot. The voice cast being shared is certainly interesting. Some of the PC versions of the early HP games actually have unused lines lingering around in the files that *do* get used in the console versions, so it seems to be that they all took from the same pool of recordings, but it was up to the development team as to which of the many different takes they wanted to utilize.

    • @lukassteinbrink322
      @lukassteinbrink322 2 года назад +11

      That is also the case for the German games. They simply dubbed everything even if it was not used in the end.

    • @lbsc1201
      @lbsc1201 2 года назад +2

      On the other hand, there are a bunch of cases where the same lines (taken from the book) in the different versions use different takes. IIRC I remember reading from someone involved in the development that the different studios basically wrote their own scripts - I presume the recording team at EA looked for ways to reuse lines between versions where possible.

    • @mangomation3945
      @mangomation3945 2 года назад +7

      @@lbsc1201 That makes sense. Get a basic game design down, each studio asks for what it needs, and EA records everything with the one cast and then sends everything needed to each studio.

    Damn. The GBC version is so insanely polished. It would give many SNES games a run for their money, holds up better than most N64 games, and being an 8-bit game, the closest related console would be the NES, which this would have been an S-tier AAA game in terms of animation quality and quest size. Fantastic video! So remember why I said blending accuracy mattered? Without it, that's why the grass looks dark and full of seams at 10:19. It's missing both the lights and the texture blending that lets the grass transition smoothly into rockier or grassier surfaces. Also, forgot to say it before but a cheatcode can be used to double the framerate back to 50/60, and another to make the game true widescreen. Which means if you have a very beastly PC, you got there the best classic Harry Potter home console experience, ridding yourself of the poor graphics, lag and long load times. And it took us two decades to make such levels of emulation possible, that's very very recent for HP2 specifically.
    Can't wait for HP3, that's where I have no knowledge, despite the movie being my favorite!

    Fun fact: the GBC version had a lot of stuff from the book that wasn't in the movie, because the publisher EA didn't care about GBC at all - since GBA was already out, they considered the GBC version "free money". So they didn't really pay attention to the developers making that version of the game, where all the other versions they would micromanage development and not allow anything that wasn't strictly in the movie.

    Then ten years later I finally stumbled upon a copy of the PS1 game down a Flea Market that was still new in the shrink. Got to have an absolutely out of body experience playing a game I’d always desperately wanted and had a rush of nostalgia for how stylistically similar it was to the first game.

The best parts were taking Harry up to high places and jumping off so he would hit the ground and die in front of those students who trade you potion ingredients, so it was Harry flopping over and going "OOOF" while the other kid yelled "FANCY A TRADE? I'VE GOT FLUBBERWORM MUCUS!!"
    And the other best part was finding the gnomes in every spell challenge to drag one around to the very end, because when you beat the challenge you'd strike a victory pose and the camera would turn arrive you in slow-motion, so the gnome would just flap around majestically in the air by its ankle in the cutscene, it was FANTASTIC

The puzzles and leveldesign were fun, punching Malfoy was a blast and the satisfaction of exploring all the nooks and crannies of hogwarts after getting new spells or getting hundreds of beans in the bonus level is hard to beat.
