Ikr right so refreshing for once, I have a soft spot for these games. More specifically the Chamber of Secrets on PS1, it was the first game I ever played.
Alex R I’m with you on that, the game has some rough edges but since I grew up with it and it’s the first ever game I received for Christmas I just can’t bring myself to hate it
Some things I'd like to point out: - The house points are somewhat useful, you need at least 300 (along with all Famous Witches and Wizards Cards) to get an alternate ending. - The Puffapod mechanic is used three times, not one. - The suits of armour attack the player as Peeves has enchanted them to do so. This explanation is given by an NPC in the Great Foyer.
This game was made by Argonaut, the original creators of Star Fox and Star Fox 2, so the best part of the game being the quidditch matches is no surprise to me.
I envied my friend so much cuz he had a pc version of the game, and I had to play this crap instead on my ps1. From my modern perspective, I would say this game is not that bad. The pc version, of course, has better gameplay and graphics, but this one has better atmosphere; I was even scared to play this while my parents weren’t at home. I couldn’t enter the room with knights cuz I was frightened by the possibility of pissing my pants.
That is the best review I've ever seen of this game. Really well done! The game has its flaws but I still love the ps1 Potter games. I spent hours playing them as a child and I still play through them like once a year for that sweet nostalgia. PS:Those mushrooms in the dungeons are called Puffapods :)
Yeah I think that's the important thing to remember about these games is that literally all of them have some serious flaws, be it PC or PS2 version, but they do enough right to basically all be enjoyable. I still play the PS1 game once every couple of years.
I loved this game so much when it came out. I was desperate to play the PC version because it had better graphics and was a way different game but my late 90s pc could not support the graphical requirements so I had to settle for this version. I still enjoyed it because the first film had come out at this time and being a child growing up in UK, there was so much Harry Potter stuff being sold in shops, chocolate frogs and Bertie Botts beans. It made the game so much more magical.
I have vague memories of playing the PC version of this as a kid, and the spell-learning bits, while still frustrating, were a lot less random. You basically had to draw the symbol for each spell five (I think?) times as assurately as possible while under a time limit. Which actually makes me wonder how the rest of the PC version would have compared to PS1.
Me too. I only remember the drawing parts, and that it was very glitchy. But looked great at the time. One of the only things I can rembember was getting on top of an object and getting the levitation spell to work on it while still standing on it, which you could repeat infinitely and keep gaining height. completely broke the game and it's boundaries.
Dude, are you okay? I hope you’re doing well. Will you return? If you do, I will watch. Despite what you’ve been trought, fight on!!!! You’ve got a fan in me.
I was really charmed by this game as a kid- the art, music, design, and as you say atmosphere- gives me all kinds of feels. I actually like the platforming and even the voice acting. I hope I can play it again
Yeah the one great thing about the Harry Potter games has always been the atmosphere! It really feels like you’re at Hogwarts. Like you’re in a magical world.
Yeah, this game was something of a gate-keeper for me as a kid. It brought me in because I liked the Hairy Pooter movies, kept playing because the atmosphere was very pleasing, then promptly getting stuck on the first Broomstick training sequence. I ended up replaying the Hedwig portion of the game over and over again, because I genuinely loved playing it. Though, it was only 7 years afterwards that regained the interest to pick it off the shelf, get pass the training, then beating the game in... 4 days? 12 year old me then? Let's say that. It was then how much I've grown as a gamer (which is utterly meaningless irl)and what confidence it gave me to give things more opportunities in life, and I thank this game dearly for it.
Also, @ 45:10, happens when you get pass the credits... then spits you back to the title screen. To this day, I'm never ready for it, and ponder to myself why did they put that in the game in the first place. It's way too unsettling for a kid's demographic. Gave me a reason to buy a nightlight, when I was 12. I still got a ways to go, I'm afraid. xD
I mean, guns are very popular in Canada. Hunting is actually y’all’s most popular sport, even more than hockey. It’s just that unlike Americans you guys don’t shoot each other!
19:00 Harry's Arch Nemesis: Draco Malformed Do you plan on covering other games in the HP Series? I think I used to have some sequel or another. But I can't imagine there's much more to say about those that doesn't hold true for this game as well -- or at least not enough for its own fully-fledged review.
There is a Chamber Of Secrets PS1 game, which is definitely a better game. The castle is bigger, and has a lot more secrets. Collecting the wizard cards is also a better experience, as instead of minigames, most of them are unlocked via exploring a secret area with the core gameplay. (One wizard card area in particular has a surprisingly atmospheric moment where you walk out onto some battlements at sunset)
Really good review and well presented. The storyline of this game is impossible to follow if you've never read the books or watched the film, which is super lazy. I feel sorry for anyone who played this before looking at what it was based on. I have fond memories of this game though. Your "British" accent impression was hilarious and sounded South African 😂
OH HELL NO- PS1 version? Oh, I don't have any nostalgia for that. The PS1 potter games were pretty awkward, but the PS2 games? Damn, those felt good to play (...Except Goblet of Fire), especially since the first three were like Zelda-lite. They even accurately portrayed the absolute lack of safety regulations in Hogwarts. "What? You wanna learn a spell, you little shit? CRAWL INTO THE DARK DUNGEON AND FIGHT GARGOYLES! I wonder why our Student death rate is so high..."
Graphics and voice acting aside, I still do prefer the ps1 version, the atmosphere fells far more dense and the climaxes feel alot more satisfying on the PS1 to me.
Im glad at least someone acknowledged how fucking hard part 3 of chess was. I never beat it as a kid and a year and a half ago I couldnt do it again without googling!

I had a Chamber of Secrets game on GameCube as a kid that I played a bunch of. I found the Sorcerer's Stone GameCube game at a Half Price Books and bought it for shits and giggles. That shit was boring as hell. Everything from opening doors to grabbing objects took way too long, and it seems to share a voice cast with this game. Thankfully, the composer was the same, so it revels in a similar atmosphere and that glorious Hogwarts main theme. Oddly, the best HP game I played was probably the GBA Chamber of Secrets game, an isometric platformer I recall being quite decent. Now that I think about it, the Game Boy Color games were turn based RPGs. Don't know if they're any good, but that's not a bad way of converting the series spell reportoire to gameplay.
I played the PC, GBA and Game Boy Colour version of this game. I was a HUGE fan of Harry Potter growing up but I only read/saw the first four books and films and half of the fifth one before I lost interest and started to read the A Series of Unfortunate Events series. I wasn't that good at video games as a kid too. When I was 5 in the late 90's I couldn't beat the original Pokémon games (The closest I got was the Gary fight at the Elite Four) and I couldn't get past the Great Deku Tree. I was that pathetic

I'm curious to know why the UI seems to switch to French (?) during Quiddich matches. Is this a thing Canadian Playstations had to do back in the day or was your disc in just *that* bad of a shape?
Long story short, I was using quiddich to test out the quality of voice acting between languanges. It was a part of the video that was cut due to irrelevance. It just happened that I needed footage of quiddich and chose some footage from my tests. It'll come up during the next video though.

This is why you hate it. You gave up back in the day. Back in the day even lovers of video games didn't give up. We enjoyed it. We have nostalgia. Whether you like it or not you aren't reviewing it out of a fair review, you're reviewing it from the same lens as nostalgia people. You just have anti nostalgia because you gave up back in the day 🤣. In reality, this is a good game. The gimmicky mini games are something most kids would enjoy, not hate, and without them this game would have little gameplay. I fondly remember doing the spells. It made me feel like I was actually having to master a spell. While you get angry and would prefer another cut scene. You're not reviewing this from the viewpoint of the audience but a critical game reviewer who disliked this game always. That's why it's just wrong
Good to see that someone actually made a proper review of this game, instead of laughing at graphics and passing it off as a "critique".
Caddicarus also did a legit review about it too. He praised it for similar reasons if I recall.
I love Caddicarus but I like TGX's reviews since it has more depth and information about the games
