This game is a borderline masterpiece..! 💜 It's nowhere near perfect, for for it's time and being based off a movie, included with actual footage from the movie in it, it actually holds up and plays very well far beyond some typical game made from a movie. It's kinda like the first three Harry Potter games to me. They can stand on their own and don't ONLY rely on the fact that they were made from a movie or movies. But are actually great games worth playing over and over again. That's why the first Madagascar game is in my opinion, in some ways even better than the actual movie. That game in my opinion is an absolute masterpiece and a half and I Love it with all my heart and soul..! 💜
I kinda wish they tried making licence games of this scale again. Today it feels very all or nothing. Either they spend an outragious amount of money on it or they pretty much spend none at all. I wouldn't mind if they made small games on relatively small budgets. I mean you have countless indie games that are not that massive so it's not like the market doesn't exist. I think a liniear game that will take you roughly an afternoon to complete is perfect for a licence game.
This was the first game I ever played when I was little and pretty much what got me into gaming as a whole thing. I played it at my grandma's house on my uncle's ancient Windows PC, there were a lot of parts I had to get my uncle to do for me cos I was only 5, looking back as someone who is around the age he was then (20s) he was super patient with me lmao. But I did figure out how to beat the race challenges without the rocket boots (keep running in front of the car so it bounces off you) which I was super proud of. Good times man. RIP Grandma💜
Anyone else here freaked out at least a tiny bit by the backgrounds of the levels themselves? Half skybox, half black endless void. As a 2nd grader, this honestly scared me away from playing the game. Really. I still get nervous af falling out of bounds in a game and falling in an endless void. XD
This was the first game that I ever got completely sucked into. My brother and I would time ourselves on different levels or challenges, and spent far far too long playing this game. I will always look back on this game with extreme fondness. Cheers for the nostalgia trip (=
I knew I had a lot of fond memories of this game, but Rex saying “Buzz BUZZ” just opened up some kind of memory lock and everything came flashing back. Thanks for that! I cant imagine how I, as a 9 year old, would ever reach that spinning top boss, but I did somehow. I have the disc somewhere so i’m going to reinstall it. If you can beat the sped up Zork, I hope I will manage thatkind of strength to finish this game once and for all
Can't be understated how much replay there was in this game. No internet. You can play this game and I do for months. Every day thinking of different challenges. I remember to this day asking my dad about primary colouring mixing. This game is best.
I think one small detail that is very nice is how the visor reflects Buzz face. You're right, the game does look fine for how long it has been around. It seems to have aged well.
Yes, the reflection is so cool! I also think I ended up using visor mode more than I thought I would, the locking feature is so useful for those annoying flying enemies
@@PhilOfGlimmer Flying enemies are always the worst, that being said, I rather fight a thousand of them than one spider, imagine now my horror playing Chamber of Secrets
Hi Phil!! Your stuff is soo awesome, watched already all the Harry Potter videos, and overall it really helps that we are from more or less same generation and played all similar games, and loving similar style and really enjoying what fun gameplay is all about and not be fooled by beautiful graphics (like it is often these days) - really awesome and keep it up!! Speaking of Harry Potter I also really dig the 2nd game the most, and re-visited OST for it "Diagon Alley" (the BEST theme from there - I saw in the video you also agree with that) and "Day Follow" so far.. and really want to do more mixing on that.. thanks for the inspiration!! P.S. - haven't played this Toy Story game by the way, somehow it pass me & my brothers by, but it somehow reminds of 101 Dalmatians game and Jimmy Neutron game!! (and something else that can't recall for the moment) Cheers!! 🍻🍻🍻
I remember waking up at 3:00am one night to see my wife (the mother of my four kids) playing Toy Story 2 on our PS1. Her claim to fame was that she was the first one to beat the game in the family. The entire family still talks about that game (including my wife). One odd piece though. Tom Hanks' brother was credited for Woody's voice in the game. Funny thing, I don't remember EVER hearing him speak other than in the cutscenes.
15:30 I remember that tune feeling very intense and scary. Which is actually perfect as you are in a far larger world where everyday things can be lethal hazards to you.
This was one of my first ever video games when I was like 5 or 6, I think it might've been my introduction to Pixar as a kid! The nostalgia is insane. I remember not being fond of the cold dull Alleys And Gullies but this was a great fun collectathon platformer. The level select map is nice and creative I agree, I just like seeing a small model to preview the level. Madagascar on ps2 did a similar thing. Good review. Also @4:12 great Doctor Who reference!
Oh god that Buzz falling sound is the best, just immediately nostalgic for me and my young self climbing levels so I can make Buzz fall to hear that scream
Your videos are so nicely put together, and edited. And you go through all the stuff about the games. Im so suprised that you only have this "low" viewcount... Anyhow, you got me subed for sure!
last boss "Zurg" moves so fast, I remember changing the resolution made him move as he was supposed to, I don't exactly remember if the resolution I used was the highest or the lowest to solve this.
The ps1 version has clunky cameras (thank god for manual option) and controls. Also, like when you are jumping through higher platforms, you unintentionally fall down when you are supposed to land in that another platform because Buzz still has to auto-walk a bit when you don't even want to. Same with not wanting to be near with villain toys. Those can just piss you off.
I think this was one of the very first videogames that I've ever played (and the A Bug's Life one as well). We had it on the pc and I was too young to really understand what I was supposed to do, so I mostly remember walking around Andy's bedroom, and talking to Hamm, Little Bo-Peep and Rex. Even though I didn't remember much of the details of the game, I do remember that I loved it.
I didn't play Mario 64 as a kid as much as this game, but never really got why people are creeped out by it now with the every copy is personalized meme, I found this game more eerie with the constant HEY BUZZ from Rex as well as the dark alleys and construction zones. I think I made it to Al's Toy Barn but my PS1 memory card acted weirdly.
I remember my friend used to play this game a lot years ago on his PS1. I finally own this game digitally on my PS3 and it is loads of fun. Still haven't beaten it yet. XD But it's a shame how Travelers Tale stopped making good games after the PS1 era. It seemed like they knew what they were doing with Toy Story 2 & A Bug's Life on PS1.
Actually you could deflect the emperor Zurg’s bullet by spinning once and the deflected projectile might hit him back. It works only on the yellow projectiles, doesn't work on the green ones if my memory is correct. I won pretty fast with this method against him.
Only thing I really really hated in this game is that it resets your progress on fulfilling some of the tasks when you quit the level, as far as I remember when I replayed it a few years ago.
Oh yeah, toy story 2 is definitely one of my favorite classics as well. It’s the first game I got when i bought my backwards compatible ps3 The latest release that came out on the ps5 has a new rewind feature, which is a game changer. It literally takes away so much frustration and repetitiveness
I remember struggling my ass of on my old family computer against zerg. Then I fought him once on my buddy's n64 and it was cake. Now it all makes sense
I never killed the evil emperor zurg i got stuck on that mission and deleted the game.! I guess it was because of the bug u mentioned 😭😭 i remember playing this game on my Windows 7 pc back in 2011
I beat this in high school on N64 after growing up with it on PC. Something that made me quit the pc version was that the spin attack bosses would cause sticky keys on keyboard controls and I was too much of a child dumbass to remap
I will never be not amazed how no one seems to be bothered by how slippery and inaccurate controls are and how painful it is to CONSTANTLY FIGHT THE CAMERA.

Pixar Was probably Jelous with the Popularity of Super Mario 64, so they created the same game only With Toys.
Slime Time used to terrify me as a child, but as an adult is one of my favorite bosses in the game.
