Toy Story is a successful film franchise, and an all-over-the-place video game franchise. I played as many as I could get my hands on, and many of them are train wrecks. And then there's Toy Story 2.

My favorite fun fact about the franchise is that when they were making the Toy Story 2 Disney wanted them to make it direct-to-video so they had no staff. Even after convincing the higher-ups, they still had to hire people who knew how to animate the characters in a hurry. So they went down the hall to Disney Interactive, found the guy who worked on the Interactive Storybook of the first game (which is honestly pretty great), and offered them a chance to work on the movie proper.

That Nightmare Buzz boss fight was based on a unused scene from the original movie, where Woody had a nightmare about Andy finding Buzz cooler that him and leaving him out before moving out, leaving Woody alone to be overtaken by cockroaches. Development of licensed games was mostly around earlier draft of movie to develop the game in time, which would usually resolve in the content of the game being slightly or more diffenrent that the product they were based on. Also, a lot of Pixar movies unused scene are about the main hero having a bad nightmare. Strange coincidence, isn't it?

My uncle helped develop Toy Story 3. He did a lot of work on the toy box mode, and the dragon? The one you ride in the Bonny’s tree area? That was originally going to be a boss, until he was like “but what if you ride it instead?”
I got to play test it a bunch, and it was really cool seeing it grow. That game was also the inspiration for Disney infinity, and that specific team worked on the “Lone Ranger” set, which was considered one of the best of the first wave by critics. 4:28 Alright, I do wanna talk about this for a second. The reason why KH3's Toy Box takes plays in a new mall is becuase it was a scrapped concept for one of the Toy Story movies. Pixar originally wanted to have one of the movies have this huge toy mall like we see in the games, but they couldn't figure out how to make it work so they scrapped it. When it came to the KH collab though, they revived it for the game. Sure it doesn't take place in Al's Toy Barn, but it's an old concept that they were able to bring back to live and I think that's really cool.

The only fun thing about the film was the damn robot cat. The pacing was atrocious and the plot was...less than stellar. BLoSC actually involved galactic travels, tons of aliens and robots, world-building, and consistently good comedy. It actually felt like a universe where Buzz Lightyear belonged, unlike the new film which I can only describe as the "current year's" attempt at putting the Pixar film "Up" into a hard sci-fi space setting by lazily ripping off the main concepts from movies like The Martian and Interstellar. It doesn't earn its attempts to tug at your heartstrings and it's nowhere near as fun and campy as the show. They even completely ruin Zurg.

Interesting little tidbit: Jon Burton, the head of Traveller's Tales (who developed the game adaptations of Toy Story 1 and 2), has a RUclips channel dedicated to showing off the various techniques the team used to develop their games, and the Toy Story 1 game in particular has a lot of fascinating elements behind its development. They utilized the Genesis's hardware in ways that didn't even seem possible when developing the game, particularly with some of the 3D-replicating effects and especially the music.

I remember playing the Toy Story 3 game so much as a kid. Even when replaying it today, it still holds up incredibly well... at least for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. The Wii version is heavily downgraded so it can fit on a Wii disk and run well on a Wii, and the PC version is just a port of the Wii version. If you have a PS3 or Xbox 360, get those versions instead.
Fun fact: After the success of the Toy Story 3 game, Avalanche Software had an idea for a sequel which would be based on Buzz instead of Woody. Some concept art was made for it, but at some point a higher-up from Disney came by and said "This game looks cool, but why restrict it to just Toy Story? Why not include multiple different Pixar franchises?" So the game was scrapped and they started working on Disney Infinity. Fortunately the concepts were utilized and included as a play set: Toy Story In Space!
Also for people who want to play Disney Infinity without having to spend hundreds of dollars on the figures, you can get Gold Editions of each of the 3 games on Steam that have all content normally locked behind figures unlocked from the start! They're very inexpensive and cost even less when on sale!

The Toy Story 3 game was freaking great, and the evidence is that Disney Infinity was effectively just the Toy Story 3 game but other Disney properties. It was actually a competently designed platformer, it had memorable levels (that one level with the rising tea was too difficult as a kid though), and the open world toy box added so much more content on top of it since it was pretty much its own game. (which I think is probably what's keeping the Aladdin cartoon in the vault) Did somebody big at Disney or Pixar put "do not ever release Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" in their will? Because the explanation that Disney execs just didn't like it doesn't make sense to me considering they've released plenty of other poorly-received stuff onto Disney+

I first bought Toy Story 3 on the Wii at first, and I would hear about these amazing things in the Toybox mode that I wanted to do but couldn’t. Then I got the Xbox 360, and it was so amazing! Doing all the quests and unlocking different features of the toy themes like the haunted mansion, space, and the fairies. I just let my imagination run around while I play this game.
Also, I know you didn’t talk much about Toy Story In Space in Disney Infinity, but I loved that game too. It was so much fun creating my own space station and exploring the planet and just seeing all those freaking adorable creatures, I mean have you seen them?! Ahem, excuse me. It’s one of my favorite story games on Disney Infinity, and it gives me nostalgia just thinking about them.

I'm required to tell this story on every review of Toy Story 2 GBC: When I was a kid, my mom, sister and I went to our new school for a conference/primer for the new school year. While the adults talked, the kids were in another room and I had my GBA with Toy Story 2. The event ends and my mom and sister go to the bathroom. I play the game waiting for them to get back, and I'm so focused on playing that I don't think to inform any of the exiting staff that we're still inside so by the time my mom and sister come out of the bathroom, we're temporarily locked inside the school. We got out in just a few minutes, but that cost me my Game Boy for quite a while.

Licensed games in the 90's and early 2000's really were a golden age, so many quality titles, especially the Disney games. Traveller's Tales really went out of their way to make fantastic Toy Story games (well, maybe not Buzz Lightyear of Star Command), and A Bug's Life. And Toy Story 2 will always be one of those games where I can keep coming back to and never get tired of it, a testament to a game's quality.
It is a bummer that we hardly ever get any licensed games these days, can you imagine what a new Toy Story game on the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series consoles could be like? That would be the closest we could get to Pixar quality visuals in a game, but it doesn't look like it was meant to be.

It also looked super good for the time, likely due to Pixar actually developing it themselves.
There were some neat mini games too, like one where you had to place all the toys in their places before Andy showed up, catching aliens via the claw machine, and setting up the buzz rescue with Sid's toys. My favorite part, even if it makes no sense in the context of the story, was helping Woody set up a crazy rube goldberg trap on buzz so he could go to Pizza planet by making sure all the toys stopped in the right places.

28:28 I dunno, Buzz' walking animation here just looks so silly here, I can't stop laughing at it for some reason

I played the toy story 3 game for the wii so much and I loved it! But the psp version was always my favorite one, but not gonna lie...the Bonnie's house mission was always a bit strange to me- like what little girl imagines her house being flooded in coffee?

Man... I a Disney Gamer account through Spectrobes 2. IIRC, back in the day, most of the folks that used it connected through a Club Penguin game.
It was basically a little social network for Disney games on the DS. Avatar creation with some fun unlockable costumes, a surprisingly decent friend system including DMs and gifts (for giving said unlockable costumes to friends connecting from other games, each with their own costumes), and several chat rooms for players to talk. The chat rooms and DMs were somewhat restricted, you could only post words contained within an internal dictionary (said dictionary was pretty large, but naturally did not any expletives, references to violence or other mature concepts, as well as a lot of very common euphemisms for the above). That being said, it did also have some fun functionality, like being able to make your avatar appear above the chat room to perform emotes. Many parties back in the day of people spamming the bubbles emote. Good times.
That may or may not also be where I got my first girlfriend who goes to another school.

The scariest boss on the toy story 2 action game PC was actually the jackhammer, would shake your entire screen when you worked up the courage to attack it, and would do the freaky laugh, making you panic.

Yes!!! I loved the toy story 3 game, had it on xbox 360, and my dsi, which was a COMPLETELY different game! Which blew my mind at the time, and only strengthened my love for toy story
Also the tower defense minigame on the ds version slapped so hard my goodness

I like how Toy Story 3's 360 game portrays the playtime levels during the story (the first level with Andy playing Woody's Roundup, the midgame level with Bonnie's Tea Party then the finale with the Haunted Bakery setpiece). The first level is a young teen's imagination, somewhat stilted, based off of existing tropes because they understand storytelling and the types of stories the characters are in. The Tea Party level is an infant's imagination, where shit just happens with no rhyme of reason but it's totally kickass stream of consciousness storytelling. Then the finale marries the two, with Bonnie coming up with something insane and 20-year old Andy giving it some kind of reason to happen and grounding it, making the story that they are telling coherent. Just two entirely different and entirely valid styles of play coming together to become something unique.
