Fun fact: This is the only Sabaton music video (so far) where Joakim doesn't wear his aviators. If that doesn't tell you how important the song is, nothing else will
This is based on actual events. In 1914, the Germans began singing carols in the trenches, some of which the English recognized and responded to then. An unofficial truce was arranged, and the two sides spent Christmas Day talking, exchanging gifts, and yes, playing football (soccer to us Americans). The fighting started again the next day. The generals made sure it never happened again. The cross at the end actually exists. FYI, Joakim and Par started writing this song in 2014 but didn't want to record it until they felt it was perfect and reflected what was one of the most amazing events in modern history. As far as other Sabaton songs, they are all excellent, but I would recommend No Bullets Fly (animated story video), To Hell and Back (music video), 40:1 (live at Woodstock 2012). Side note, you should watch the interview the Charismatic Voice did with Joakim, it is very informative
this actually happened in several places on the western front independently of the other identical events happening at other battlefields. for some the truce was very short, for others it lasted weeks. for a while there people just said they were sick and tired of fighting.
@@johnf1619 I checked it out, a beautiful (and depressing) song. I'm not really big on A Capella music but this was nice. the 1915 truce did not amount to much since the generals on both sides issued orders warning of several consequences if 1914 was repeated, up to execution for treason. In one area the French and Germans got together, but mostly there was a lull if fighting and no intermingling of the two sides other than an agreement to allow parties to retrieve and bury the dead. By 1916, no one was in any mood for a truce due to the increasingly horrible battles. There is some evidence the Germans proposed truces in 1916 and 1917, efforts that went unanswered.
@@mikemodels928 Seriously, I've lost track over how many times I've heard that song (with Franz and Charlie's meeting footage afterwards) and I still tear up every time. Now I watch it whenever I need a good cry.
The piano exploding near the end was symbolic for the destroyed chance of peace and camaraderie between the soldiers that followed thanks to the higher ups on both sides who made sure another truce never happened.

Don't expect him to play live, he rarely does it, though he records keyboard parts. Two excellent pieces of piano playing by metal bands are the live versions of Shaman's Fairy Tale and X-Japan's Endless Rain. Manowar's Hertz aus Stahl live in Germany, too. Both sides had told their soldiers that "This will be over by Christmas", they didn't tell them which Christmas. The Christmas truce lasted from a few hours in some parts of the lines and way in ti January on other parts of the front.
Early on in the bands life, Joachim was the keyboard player and the lead singer quit, so he was singing the songs while they looked for a new lead. Then one day, they said "Hey, let us introduce you to the new keyboard player" and he said "Wait, I'm the keyboard player!"

Thought for the Day: "Those who don't remember history are condemned to repeat it." ~ General Santana Dotson I read through the comments here, and I'm a little shocked, to say the least. First, I read some comments asking how Sabaton, being from Sweden, could sing about military history. Others have talked about warfare, and say war is unnecessary. I will say that warfare is a necessary evil. It is altruistic to say that everybody would, given a choice, get along. This is untrue, as there will always be groups of humans who, for whatever reason, will fight. They will arm themselves, and go to war. Whether that group is a street gang, fighting another street gang, over street turf, or whether it is a country having a formal military and going to war that way, it is a part of human nature to fight. Sabaton says at the end of Bismarck, "War knows no nation." It is because war is part of human nature, no matter where you live. We are all human. And so, Sabaton sings about the past to keep the lessons of the past fresh in the minds of those who didn't live during those times, or who weren't even there. Yet those historical events happened. We have the living history of perhaps two generations back, and the oldest among us to tell us about historical events of significance in, say, the Second World War, will one day be gone. In 10 years, it will be a century since Adolph Hitler took power in Germany in 1932. In the next 15 years, the fighting men of World War II will be gone, laid to rest as we all will one day. That history will be relegated to books and recorded accounts. But I say this to tell you, it is one thing to read about what happened in history, it is another to talk to someone who was there. Who fought the battles and wars you read about. In my lifetime, I've witnessed the following: - The death of the last World War I veteran - The death of the last survivor of the USS Arizona during Pearl Harbor, who was buried at the memorial - The death of the last survivor of the KMS Bismarck - The death of the last Night Witch in 2017, who flew as part of the Russian Air Forces 588th Night Bombing Regiment - The death of the last US Medal of Honor winner in World War II - And within the next 15 years, the death of the last World War II veteran, anywhere It must be taken to heart the "Thought for the Day" I've begun this post with, if for no other reason than to remember history and learn it's lessons. A museum is not the only place rememberance can happen. Thus, it is that Sabaton sings about history, and keeps that history from fading. The other part of this post is a reminder to those who see no point in war. Unless you have served, and put on that uniform, and swore an oath of service, you have no idea what goes through the mind of a Soldier. A Sailor. A Marine. An Airman. Those who fight, do so, so you don't have to. They spend months and years away from their families to ensure their home is still there when they return. In the case of Ukraine, it is a fight in their backyard, a fight Ukraine looks to win within the next year or so (hopefully sooner). So I ask you to not judge a soldier for what is good intent, for every soldier leaves hopeful, and returns, shall we say, changed. It is with every soldier who has the hope that perhaps by his service, his loved ones don't have to fight. Because the only way you can truly understand, is if you know what it's like to have rounds flying at you, when you're downrange from the enemy, or when you're fighting an enemy at the gates of your own home. This is why I have said before, and I will say again, in America, we have a saying: That we love our country, but hate our government. We criticize and decry our leaders all the day long. But we usually don't tolerate is the bad-mouthing of those that serve. And so I say to you, respect and cherish your nation's fighting men and women -- for without them, you would be under the dominion of a despot, a dictator, a tyrant, or worse. Thank you to all those who serve. Your service is very greatly appreciated. (' ')7 "Lest We Forget" Khaki Chums 1914
I agree actually. I’m from Russia 🇷🇺 my grandfather fought in WWII and my father was in the army for 25 years and I very proud of what Russia did during WWII which is very hard in USA cuz Americans think they saved the world, completely disregarding what Russian soldiers did, but I agree about what you said about the war. We warship Alexander the Great and Roman empire who basically wanted to own the world. I love USA and I can never understand why some citizens hate it. This country is beautiful. As far as Ukraine my family is from Donbas, I just want people to stop dying. I love Sabaton for actually talking about REAL historical events without talking sides

there needs to be a docuseries based on Sabaton's work. Fun fact Joakim Borden originally was the Keyboardist but switched to vocals till they got someone to be the main vocals, I guess they're still searching 20 years later.
Well, they have one of the best vocalists in Sweden now (Tommy) but its too late, everybody realized that Joakim's voice is perfect for Sabaton songs 😃
So, as the story I believe goes, the Pope during the war pleaded for a cease fire for Christmas. Now some battlefields did this and interacted with the opposite side but no one can confirm because each side declares they were the ones who initiated. Sad part is a lot of soldiers were killed because they went to cross to the other side to greet but were mistaken for advancement and killed. And from what I've read, Sabaton had this song written a long time ago, but needed the music and lyrics to be just perfect. So, they felt the time was right and released it after many revisions.
The Germans had a Tenor with them and he started singing “Silent Night Holy Night” the British soldiers did hear it and left the trench. There excists a movie with Diane Krueger. I like this story because it shows that most soldiers wouldn’t fight if somebody wouldn’t force them to do it.
I just saw Sabaton and Epica on 6 October in Maryland. Great show! You're going to love it! Also, I can't watch this video with crying. They perform this song at the concert.

Swedish here- I love history. But to be fair, I have learned more war history trough Sabaton than I did at school. Especially Swedish war history. :D And yes I watch a lot of history documentaries.
There's a joke by Sabaton. At that time a front singer was wanted and Joachim had volunteered for the piano. At some point Joachim then began to mime the lead singer. Since then they joke that they are still looking for a lead singer.

It's not Beethoven in the Intro, but rather a variation of Shchedryk, an Ukrainean folk song, known in English as "The Little Swallow", and later adapted as "Carol of the bells".

In my lifetime, I've witnessed the following:
- The death of the last World War I veteran
- The death of the last survivor of the USS Arizona during Pearl Harbor, who was buried at the memorial
- The death of the last survivor of the KMS Bismarck
- The death of the last Night Witch in 2017, who flew as part of the Russian Air Forces 588th Night Bombing Regiment
- The death of the last US Medal of Honor winner in World War II
- And within the next 15 years, the death of the last World War II veteran, anywhere
It must be taken to heart the "Thought for the Day" I've begun this post with, if for no other reason than to remember history and learn it's lessons.
Your service is very greatly appreciated.

very well said
I agree actually.
Not sure if you noticed, but that is Carols of the Bells as the tune behind the song.
Émotions garanti a chaque clips de ce groupe magnifique🙏🤘🇨🇵
sabaton history is a great channel to check out too, especially if you can watch the video connected to a song you are viewing.
I dont Even celebrate christmas but the song is still moving, and the christmas truce of 1914 is also very moving to reflect over.
Sabaton is the best! Great video Anastasia!
Super song ! 👏👏👏
I knew it would strike sooner or later and sure did :) Thank you for the reaction!
That is not a song , is an epic history lesson . Great work Sabaton and Floor Jansen for the epic end credits. 1914 outside Ypres Belgium , WW1.
They nailed it with the historic part of the video. One day of truce on both sides. This band knows there history. Beauty is in everything but war!! REMEMBER🌹
Thanks from sweden on your reaction on Sabaton 😍
Politicians don't make us go to war, dictators do who underestimate the power of people and unity, Ukraine we stand together
Pleeeease react to Tommy Johansson The guy with the quitar in the video, and his Queencower Who wants to live forewer
Hus singingvoice is CRACY
He is an multiinstrumentalist and play all the instrument himself
He is also the guy behind the music of a lot of Floors cowers
Hm, maybe you need som tissues 😏
I did:)
It really helps when your drummer is married to Floor Jansen so that she can sing at the end !!
Anastasia funny you should mention Sabaton touring. I will be attending their concert in Dallas Texas this Friday!
Sabaton has such complex history lessons some times that you get better picture when checking their MV first, or even Sabaton History channel about the same subject.
They’re actually from my hometown. Very talented and down to earth guys. You should check out their history channel.
Just curious if you recognized Floor was the vocalist at the end which brings this song to another level.
No I actually didn’t. I was told after. I was trying not to cry out my lashes 😢
Just saw sabaton and epica on Wednesday. GREAT FN SHOW!! 🤟🤟
Enjoy that show. I just saw them at a previous stop on that tour and both Sabaton and Epica rocked it! I don't wanna spoil the performance or anything but just be ready with your phone light when you hear that piano begin playing, you'll be in for a treat.
It was AWESOME. They tried to get Simon to chug beer😂
I can recommend "en livstid i krig" for a nice live performance at the home stage. Dont forget to turn on subtitles for the video
Saw Sabaton / Epica 09-24-22 Phoenix Az ... Was absolutlely fantastic and epic show .... This Song was played with Joakim playing an upright piano just like in the video .... Enjoy
Saw them in Seattle..they were awesome you going enjoy them
Best show yet
Floor makes you cry each time
Haha sometimes you have to grab what you can to dry your eyes.. great song and amazing reaction!
Dear Anastasia, tears are beutiful.
there needs to be a docuseries based on Sabaton's work.
Yeah I heard that. Good thing we have him as a singer
Going to be seeing Sabaton live in 5 days. Looking forward to it!! I hope you get your chance, too!
I did!
that ad jumpscare around 2:53 had me shitting myself from laughter looool
So, as the story I believe goes, the Pope during the war pleaded for a cease fire for Christmas. Now some battlefields did this and interacted with the opposite side but no one can confirm because each side declares they were the ones who initiated. Sad part is a lot of soldiers were killed because they went to cross to the other side to greet but were mistaken for advancement and killed. And from what I've read, Sabaton had this song written a long time ago, but needed the music and lyrics to be just perfect. So, they felt the time was right and released it after many revisions.
There was also an attempt to make a chrismas truce on the Eastern Front, but because of the difference in Calendars it had a very different outcome :(
I heard they were working on this song for a long time. And yeah Eastern Europe Christmas is on January 7th
Wow you have an amaizing Voice
Im definetly gona check you out
Im a fan
I'll be at Sabaton and Epica in Philly. I can't wait!
Not a music video, but Sainsbury's did a christmas commercial in 2014 about this event that rips the heart out every time
Good reaction, very beautiful song 😭
You are awesome.
Best show I’ve ever seen
Indeed Christmas Truce is emotional if you understand the music accompany with the video. And maybe If every warriors listen to this song especially from the 24 day of December if their battle starts on this day, this song will give a very big impact to their hearts when the time of the 25 day of December comes, when it sang to them.😬✊
The first instrument that Joakim ever learned to play at a young age was the Hammond organ btw.
Loved your video ❤
originally joakim wanted to go into the band as a keyboardplayer. but well he ended up becoming the singer. since the official keyboardplayer daniel left the band and put up the band civil war joakim plays keyboards again on the albums although nowadays he has sometimes to share that with tommy the guitarplayer who can also play keyboards and sing just like joakim also can play guitar when necessary.
Swedish here- I love history. But to be fair, I have learned more war history trough Sabaton than I did at school. Especially Swedish war history. :D And yes I watch a lot of history documentaries.
They are pretty spot on about Russian history
The Red Baron live from The Great Tour. Joakim plays a Hammond organ that's also a plane. No really you should react to it.
Soldiers are the first ones in line against war as you say
There's a joke by Sabaton. At that time a front singer was wanted and Joachim had volunteered for the piano. At some point Joachim then began to mime the lead singer. Since then they joke that they are still looking for a lead singer.
11:51 Pär: haha we got her guys!
Leontovych wrote Carol of the Bells based on a Ukrainian song called Shchedryk. Sabaton reversed the melody basically!
Hey I was at the NYC show too! Sat in the first balcony. That was a great show it was basically a two for one special and they're both amazing live. Epica & Sabaton easily in my top 5 probably top 3 atm. Hope u had a good time.
Honestly to this day the best show
You need to have a listen to their newest offering The First Soldier. What an anthem!
It's not Beethoven in the Intro, but rather a variation of Shchedryk, an Ukrainean folk song, known in English as "The Little Swallow", and later adapted as "Carol of the bells".
Fun fact, it was written in 1914. I love when all comes together.
Joakim used to play the Organ (before Sabaton).
with sabaton even if you don't watch the music video you can always get background through the sabaton history channel 😀
Sooo freaking late was Christmas song for 2021
Sabaton sings a lot about war, but they don’t glorify it, nor do they pick sides. They’re more about the history than anything else.
Hi my friend must do ( no bullets fly) next it's amazing and has a fantastic twist at the end love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing 👍
London is my dream city to go to
Great reaction. Yeah, you just can't watch this video without the onion ninja sneaking up on you. 😉
Another good Sabbaton to watch/review would be "Solider of Heaven". Just beware, you will cry again.
7:30 yaaaa! you tell them pricks!!
but also, it is the fault of the bad guys.
If you haven’t listened to night witches by Sabaton I highly recommend it.
This why I keep a box of tissue next to my desk.
I'll see them at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC on oct 23rd!!!
Me too! I guess I'll see you there!!!
Nice reaction. Pity you did not realise it was Floor at the end. And yes, they were playing football ⚽️
ahem, futbol
