    ======== Christmas Truce LYRICS ==========
    Silence
    Oh, I remember the silence
    On a cold winter day
After many months on the battlefield
And we were used to the violence
Then all the cannons went silent
    And the snow fell
Voices sang to me from no man’s land
We are all, we are all, we are all, we are all friends
    And today we’re all brothers
    Tonight we’re all friends
A moment of peace in a war that never ends
    Today we’re all brothers
    We drink and unite
Now Christmas has arrived and the snow turns the ground white
Hear carols from the trenches, we sing O holy night
Our guns laid to rest among snowflakes
A Christmas in the trenches, a Christmas on the front far from home
    Madness
    Oh I remember the sadness
    We were hiding our tears
In a foreign land where we faced our fears
    We were soldiers
Carried the war on our shoulders
    For our nations
Is that why we bury our friends?
We were all, we were all, we were all, we were all friends
A Christmas on the frontline, we walk among our friends, we don’t think about tomorrow, the battle will commence
When we celebrated Christmas, we thought about our friends, those who never made it home, when the battle had commenced

asca veteran you will likely find the live performance of "en livstid I krig " from Göteborg very emotional, yes, it is in Swedish but there are subtitles (not perfect, but message gets across), very powerful performance and the lyrics are even more so.
a few lines from the lyrics.
"see me as the husband, fater, friend and son that never comes home"
      another
"on the battlefield where kin/friends fall no songs are heard"

The one thing that I love about Sabaton and their songwriting, which is a keypoint for what they do, is how HISTORICALLY ACCURATE they are. This wasn't just a portrayal based on ta concept for the song. This actually happened, as the Christmas Truce took place over World War I, when Pope Benedict begged for peace over because of Christmas. It wasn't the countries that agreed to this; the soldiers did it on their own. It turned out that after this, each country made up their own rules that no truces like this would ever happen again, lest those doing it face court-martial. So this was the only time this ever really happened.
T hey exchanged gifts, like those buttons, pictures, etc. and yes, they played soccer with each other and sang carols, and even helped to bury each other's dead. After Christmas Day, they went back to war.
Keep in mind that we in the US really didn't hear much about this because we didn't enter World War 1 until 1917, so this happened 3 years before we got involved. So an event like this is huge for those in Europe. BTW, that cross actually exists in Ypres, Belgium.

After the truce was over, many of the men refused to fight their fellow men in combat, despite orders from commanding officers. Thus, many of the men were transferred to other stations. If this truce shows us anything, it's that these men were strong-willed and didn't let the war take away the most important thing about them: their humanity.

All honor to these men! I have also read stories about the battle of Stalingrad between Germans and the Soviets, that when the city was nearly destroyed, the Germans were playing football and having a good time in middle of some destroyed buildings - the Soviet soldiers came there to play with them, and trade food and cigarettes etc. The Soviet forces were so tired to fight over this "useless" city which held the name of "Stalin"grad. They chatted (what they could) and traded and played with the Germans. Everyone was just so fed up with the whole fighting... It's just human nature.
Here in Finland we also had a Christmas truce with the Soviets. So the priests can read the bible and everyone can eat, pray and relax but the Soviets bombed us during the whole truce. Priest was standing up beside a trench reading the bible along with mortar-fire around him...

What are Dunkaroos never heard of them and what ever they are we don't have them in England. Sabaton's latest release is absolutely brilliant and it's a true event that I learned in history class aged 7. I was born in London and bought up there till I was 3 years old but I still call myself a Londoner, we moved to the Country of Hertfordshire ( which in America would be a State). I still live in Hertfordshire but in a town where previously I lived in a village in a 16th century cottage then to a Council house with my younger brother and parents who are Northern Irish and Irish. In WW1 our county had it's own Regiment it was the Hertfordshire Regiment where on Christmas Day 1914 the 1st Battalion of the Hertfordshire Regiment where on No Man's Land celebrating Christmas with the German Soldiers, Smoking, drinking, eating, sharing gifts and signing. I support a football club and a Rugby club both from London, the Rugby Club that I support are the London Irish Rugby Union Football Club which has an alliance with a British Army Regiment, who are The London Irish Regiment who played Football with the German Soldiers on the Christmas Day Truce in 1914. The actual football that was used in that particular sector of No Man's Land is at the Regimental Museum at The London Irish Regiment Barack's. A Major from a British Army Regiment gave his Counterpart from the German Army a scarf that was knitted by his mum for his Christmas Present to the German Major as a Christmas Present so the German Major gave the British Major his gloves as a Christmas gift. They left each other as friends, 3 months later the British Major was killed so sad. The first world war should never happened, The UK and Germany were not only Allies but friends. I blame Kaizer Wilhelm the second, the blood thirsty German Generals, the German Government, Austria/Hungary but most of all Archduke Franz Ferdinand travelling to Serbia on Serbia's Holy day. This song reminds me of Eric Bogle. He has a song called "...And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda" about Gallipoli, another battle in the Great War. While it doesn't include Christmas, it includes a part that goes:
But the band played Waltzing Matilda
When we stopped to bury our slain
We buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs
Then we started all over again...

Very touching song and video! It’s a true story that happened in the 1st WW between British (was it a Scottish division? Hence the bagpipes) and German troops at the Belgian frontline… these men could be friends, but politics forced them to kill each other… so sad, and still happens all over the world… great song, love it! Greetings from Germany 👍🤘

Funny how they blew up the instrument of Peace(the piano)but saved the instrument of war(the cross). The soldier called Hannes is Sabaton's drummer Hannes van Dahl. You are right; his wife, Nightwish Frontwoman Floor Jansen, sang the title song on the ending credits. Hannes knew he had to put Floor in or it was the longtime doghouse for him lol.
One of the best videos I have seen of Sabaton. They really nailed it.

This video only covers a small section of the trench line. Prior to this truce (and it happened all down the line in various different ways) they were close enough that they had shouted to each other, made temp truces to gather wounded and made "deals" such as not shooting at men using the latrine.

  • @Rafnatyr70

Pope Benedict XV sent a letter asking for truce for Christmas. General's said no to that and wanted to continue the fight. It was the soldiers themselves who instigated the truce. 100.000 soldiers joined the truce for Christmas. In one account there was an english soldier with barber skills who went on to cut some german's hair to look the best for Christmas. One of the finest moments in history are portrayed in this song! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all! Love Peace and Rock'n Roll

I went down late in the day on the 24th, struck in the engine I could not press on. My crate nosed over into shell hole, I came to much later. I could do nothing but hide, the madness of no-mans land reigns terror on those caught in it. Darkness fell, and an eternity lay before me as I plotted my way out. But something happened that night, a soul deafening silence fell upon the front, followed soon by a single voice in song. Not believing what I was hearing, I peered over the mangled wings covering my hole. I saw a single man, standing above the trenches, hands behind his back, singing as though his humanity depended on it. It filled me with a chill the night and snow could not give. Then more of his comrades stood to join him, and they walked onward, slowly and un-armed. I heard a heavy Scottish voice say; "Are ye a'right lad?". A highlander with his pipes was standing aside my hole, his hand extended. Without a thought, I responded: "Shaken, but not dead."
    "It's Christmas, Lad. C'mon."
I stood, and took his hand for help from the hole. Around me I saw what could be described as a wonderous occasion. Men of all sides stood in the desolation, talking in what tongues they knew as though there was no war. There was no hate, no blood, no malice, only cordial respect and humanity. I wondered then, what we were fighting these men for. It struck me then, that each of us had a job to do, but tonight we all refused to do that job and simply be human. The voices rose again in song, and the piper played as we walked to the gathering. I couldn't help but feel that there was hope for us afterall, that we are all the same, no matter our uniforms, our rifles, or our futures. Tonight is Christmas, tonight we sing.
    -Manfred von Schreiber.

Things like the Christmas truce used to be somewhat common in warfare.
Armies would routinely call temporary cease fires to allow for the burial of the dead and collection of the wounded.
Or the exchanging of hard to get items and maybe even prisoners.
Armies with the same religious beliefs would frequently refuse to give battle on Holy days or significant days.
Only in our modern world, the 20th century and beyond, has it really stopped.

5:33 Sadly, a few of those first to leave the trenches were killed by the opposing side.
On that day, similar events appeared all across the frontlines. And if in most places, they indeed did a truce for a day, there are some places where they continued shooting non stop that day. 😢

At the start Joakim Broden played keyboard or guitar and the lead vocals. In 2005 they brought in Daniel Myhr to take over the keyboard to offload him.
Then in 2012 four of the then 6 members quit to form the band Civil War, this included Myhr, leaving only Joakim and Pär, they're still so there's two founding members left.
My understanding is that after that Joakim does the keyboard for the studio recordings. I thought it was tracked live but for the Red Baron during The Great Tour Joakim plays the intro on the airplane, before handing it over to someone else to concentrate on crowd interaction and vocals again.
So, that could be a live session player OR it's a stage hand and it's just a prop once Joakim leaves it. If they DID use a live session player for that I suspect they also used him for the other songs (seems a waste not to).
Obligatory note: HaNnEs VaN dAhL iS mArRiEd To FlOoR jAnSeN (running joke). Which certainly helps explain why she was the logical choice for the end vocals, though Sabaton and ReVamp has also toured together so even without that there's connections.

The Christmas Truce was a monumental moment in WW1. The war has just started in August and the soldiers were all "War'll be over by Christmas" schtick that soldiers do. When Christmas Day 0f 1914 came the was still on hard and heavy. The soldiers were fighiting on the Western Front laid down their arms and came together for celebration. However, by Christmas 1915 the good cheer was gone as the most destructive weapons until that time were being used, men were getting shelled around the clock. WW1 saw death and destruction on a scale that had never been seen before. Lest we forget.

So many amazing things about this video, many of them mentioned by others. It's very striking that the piano is an homage to "Carol of the Bells," which really drives home the point of the song. The truly sad thing about the reality of the story was when the generals found out about it, they passed regulations that if it ever happened again, those participating would be shot. WWI was the most senseless and unnecessary war in history. It was a war amongst cousins, who were in the ruling of positions in seven countries, all grandchildren of Queen Victoria. It was necessitated by a series of treaties, and when the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand brought forth a desire to genocide the Serbians, all the treaties were triggered. Then the Kaiser decided he could benefit and pretty much set everything into motion, which led to a Draconian treaty which led to WWII. The idea of a War to End All Wars is ridiculous, it is simply not in the nature of man.

It started, because one of german soldier started singing a song in English. I'm not sure, that it was a CHristmas song, or just told something. And then they stopped shooting, stopped the war, basically. Just for one day, because all of them are far from home, they have families and CHristmas it's always Christmas. It's very sad. It's just like, ok, today we celebrate, today we relaxed, but tomorrow, probably I'll shoot you by my hands...war is a bullshit.
