What happens after ISIS falls?

  • Three ways ISIS will remain a threat after defeat.
Correction: At 0:18, a previous version of the video mistakenly suggested that Turkey-backed forces are fighting ISIS in the west. In fact, the Russia-backed Syrian army and its allies are fighting ISIS in the north and west. The error has been rectified.
We also want to clarify that the color coded lines that appeared in the previous version at 0:18 did not indicate a border or the frontline. The lines were meant to illustrate that ISIS was under attack on all sides. That highlight has now been removed to avoid any confusion.

It was also a symbolic loss, Mosul is where the group declared a caliphate, or Islamic territory, in 2014. This set them apart from other terrorist organizations. They weren’t just a network of jihadists strung out across several countries, like al-Qaeda, they governed over actual territory, which they called the Islamic State.
Now with the loss of Mosul, the fall of the ISIS caliphate seems imminent, but what happens when ISIS is gone?
Now this doesn’t mean ISIS will be gone. In fact, the fall of ISIS raises some complicated issues. So I asked the Vox.com Foreign team to explain what could happen after ISIS is defeated .

This is a remarkably unbiased video. Normally your content is particular left leaning (which is fine, PragerU is the same way) but this is a really objective video. Bravo. Way to keep personal feeling and politics out of the issue at hand and focus on that actual question, which is what happens next?

The media destroys an ideology. Very similar to what is happening in the US with the majority of mass media coming from left leaning networks. Terrorism spreads through the use of mass media. If the media would just ignore what terrorists want to spread it will slow down the outreach and spread of terrorism and extremism

I like reading comments as I watch the video and spot the incorrectness of the comments in real time. The US troops might stay or go home. The members of ISIS who survive might have to migrate, which is a problem as they might commit more attacks. ISIS will no longer exist as a place, but as "an idea." This means that the radicalization of ISIS will further online as efforts for territory disappear, so the impact of ISIS will decrease with its defeat but the idea is spreading and will cause attacks internationally, moving from a concentration in the Middle East. Fun times.

Do you want to defeat an idea? Easy, give them a good education system, and a stable prosper society. That is, the west would have to invest not in keeping military, but in rebuilding those areas, and help them establish their own institutions. All based on critical thinking, and not some ideology.
But that last part is difficult, since USA itself is built on ideology. So why would they build a proper education elsewhere, when they don`t do it at home?

    • @saffronpark6524

@maurcd Here's the problem. Building better infrastructure and promoting education works when the violence isn't a multinational conflict where one side uses guerrilla warfare and particularly destructive methods of combat on top of propaganda and cultural domination. Even after the fight ends, and it's reduced to an idea, how are you going to tell a child his dad is someone who is incorrect in killing when that's all he's learned from his pop?
It's a pretty vicious cycle. I actually want to say that an oppressive dictator is one of the only way to keep this situation in check??? Someone like the Shaw of Iran but less westernized so that he can still connect with the people. Still introduce reform, but in more moderation to avoid the mess that happened when the Khomeinis pushed a conservative revolution.

Russian forces with the help of syrian army and iranian miltias didn't focus their attacks on ISIS, the only major attack against ISIS was in the historic city of Tadmur (palmyria) in syria.
Most of the fighting that the Russians/syrian did were against rebel groups that are supported by turkey/gulf and western countries. some of these rebel groups were affiliated with al-qeada (which is also an enemy of ISIS).
but direct attack against ISIS were usually limited. in syria the groups that fought ISIS the hardest were the kurdish and rebels, because they are competing for the same territories

Nice video, a couple of things I would like to critique though:
    1. You fail to mention that it is not the Turkish backed rebels anymore who fight ISIS in the West of Syria, it is Assad who does that. And the Tiger Force is giving ISIS one hell of a run for it's money actually. Yes, we all know Assad is an autocrat who killed thousands in his torture prisons, but the fact that he also quite effectively fights ISIS remains. As uncomfortable as this might be to acknowledge, it is still the truth.
    2. ISIS' interpretation of Islam is not "extreme". The word extreme implies that it is something distorted and fringe. This is however not the case, they are practicing the most pure and most literal form of the Islamic faith that there is. They go to great lengths to follow the Quran, the Sunnah, and the Hadith in absolute meticulous detail. Their leader Abu-Bakr has a PhD from one of the most respected institutions for Islamic studies, the University of Cairo. Nothing they do is in any way unislamic, quite the opposite is the case.
    3. The indoctrination with islamic ideas is not something that happens solely through the internet, there is a lot of hands-on indoctriantion in local mosques and through peers involved as well. Imams, scholars, and preachers who have contact to branches of ISIS and act as ideological operatives in the West play a huge role in leading people on the path to violence.

    • @MAYONNAISEMOOSE
      @MAYONNAISEMOOSE 6 лет назад +80

      #2 is entirely wrong.
No one follows islam "purely". There's no such thing as "pure" Islam. 90% of their ideological backgrounds come from unauthenticated hadiths and not Qur'an.
      Examples:
1: Who can be a caliph?
Using history, Islam's first 4 major Caliphs, Abu Bakr, Omar, Uthman, Ali, were descendants of the Prophet Muhammad. Who is Al Baghdadi? Some Iraqi Cleric who follows Salafism/Wahhabi Islam.
This, by itself, is proof that the idea of a caliphate, which is the main goal for ISIS, is simply idiotic. Also containing the fact that a caliphate should be chosen by all Muslims, *in the world* , which ISIS didnt even get 78% of all Muslim votes.
      Sources:
//" _A caliphate (Arabic: خِلافة‎‎ khilāfa) is a territory under the leadership of an Islamic steward known as a caliph (/ˈkælɪf, ˈkeɪ-/, Arabic: خَليفة‎‎ khalīfah, pronunciation ), a person considered a religious successor to the Islamic prophet Muhammad (Muhammad ibn ʿAbdullāh) and a leader of the entire Muslim community._ " - Wikipedia
// "Qur’an (49:13): “O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise [each other]).”
What does isis do? The exact opposite.
// "Fight in the way of Allah those who *fight you* but do *not transgress*. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors."
      2:190
ISIS transgressed beyond bounds of Islamic thought. They killed and oppressed everyone who was not a Muslim that obviously did no harm. If the enemy was attacking in the way of speech or expression, God says:
      2:153
"O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient."
ISIS is in no way patient about anything. They dont seek help from GOD even tho they SEEM as they are doing so. A real Muslim will wage Jihad against the struggle/self. I.e the meaning of jihad.
2: Here are examples From the Qur'an and you are to judge everything you see here if they relate to ISIS following "pure islam":
      // read from Quran.com/9/1
To Quran.com/9/16 or the entire chapter if you have the time. *Thoroughly. Do Not read some verses and leave out others.*
// Read this Article on Quran 9:29, chapter 9 on the battles that took place between the Byzantines!
      discover-the-truth.com/2014/06/03/examining-quran-929-does-islam-sanction-the-killing-of-christians-and-jews/
      3: Historical analysis.
Read about Caliph Omar's letter to Jerusalem after conquering it.
      www.livingislam.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=809:latheef-farook&catid=77:current-affairs&Itemid=520

Bottlekiller here are a few examples of unislamic things that they did/do:
      1. Burning alive a Muslim pilot, لا يعذب بالنار إلى رب النار. Which translates to: none should torture with fire except the God of fire. (As in hell.)
      2. Their uses of women there. I don't need to go into details on this one.
      3. Killing other Muslims as cited in the Quran is forbidden.
      4. I can't back these up with evidence because I really don't babe the time. but terrorist attacks and killing civilians are not something we are taught here. When Islam was spreading wars were always fought against men. Elders and women and children were not harmed.

In germany we once had the terroristic group called the RAF and we managed to not only stop them but also to destroy the idea. They're gone. ISIS will be a lot harder, because now it won't be bound to a location anymore but I think it is possible to fight the idea of ISIS.

Great video. Informative, quick and clear. The only thing I didn't like was that you showed the faces of the terrorists who carried out the San Bernardino and Orlando attacks. These people aren't just doing those attacks to further the ideals of ISIS, they're trying to get their own five minutes of fame. Showing their faces just shows other potential terrorists that the media is going to focus on them, their face, and what they did. The media should cover the attacks but should focus on the victims and the first responders, not the scum that attacked innocents.

You're a bleeding heart who will give anyone but america credit for a victory, do not forget that russia is doing this not to support stability in the region but to support assad's government, the United States is supporting stability and democracy in the region by funding Iraq and Syrian Militias, Russia only attacks ISIS because ISIS is in Russia's way for a syria that is a puppet of Russia, ISIS is in the US' way because the US wants most of the middle east to be free and stable.

There is a big difference between having a terrorist organization control cities, people and industry, and having them radicalize random loosers on the internet. While its unfortunate and very difficult to stop random terrorists who might go on a knife killing spree, it's not comparable to the damage a organized group could do if they have the logistics and industrial capacity to produce bombs.

I liked the video and agreed with most of it until the end. "It's impossible... impossible to beat an idea." No it's not. History has massive graveyards of dead ideas. I'm not saying it's easy or quick, but it damn sure it's "impossible... impossible".
