- Three ways ISIS will remain a threat after defeat.
Correction: At 0:18, a previous version of the video mistakenly suggested that Turkey-backed forces are fighting ISIS in the west. In fact, the Russia-backed Syrian army and its allies are fighting ISIS in the north and west. The error has been rectified.
We also want to clarify that the color coded lines that appeared in the previous version at 0:18 did not indicate a border or the frontline. The lines were meant to illustrate that ISIS was under attack on all sides. That highlight has now been removed to avoid any confusion.

It was also a symbolic loss, Mosul is where the group declared a caliphate, or Islamic territory, in 2014. This set them apart from other terrorist organizations. They weren’t just a network of jihadists strung out across several countries, like al-Qaeda, they governed over actual territory, which they called the Islamic State.
Now with the loss of Mosul, the fall of the ISIS caliphate seems imminent, but what happens when ISIS is gone?
Now this doesn’t mean ISIS will be gone. In fact, the fall of ISIS raises some complicated issues. So I asked the Vox.com Foreign team to explain what could happen after ISIS is defeated .

Vox Atleast now you mention them and BTW the FSA and other groups as them don't even have a frontline with ISIS anymore
Vox and y'all have conveniantly forgotten to mention and Turkey is not only funding ISIS but is also shelling Kurdish held territory.
Why do not you mention that the US created al-Qaeda and all the chaos in the region ?
The Turkish-backed rebels aren't fighting ISIS, though. It's PRIMARILY the Syrian government.
This is a remarkably unbiased video. Normally your content is particular left leaning (which is fine, PragerU is the same way) but this is a really objective video. Bravo. Way to keep personal feeling and politics out of the issue at hand and focus on that actual question, which is what happens next?

The Nazis were defeated but Nazism still exists. The Communists were defeated but Communism still exists.
The media destroys an ideology. Very similar to what is happening in the US with the majority of mass media coming from left leaning networks. Terrorism spreads through the use of mass media. If the media would just ignore what terrorists want to spread it will slow down the outreach and spread of terrorism and extremism

The answer is that anything could happen, but here are some predictions.
@@Bariom_dome but... all they did was talk about stuff that already has happened.
I like reading comments as I watch the video and spot the incorrectness of the comments in real time. The US troops might stay or go home. The members of ISIS who survive might have to migrate, which is a problem as they might commit more attacks. ISIS will no longer exist as a place, but as "an idea." This means that the radicalization of ISIS will further online as efforts for territory disappear, so the impact of ISIS will decrease with its defeat but the idea is spreading and will cause attacks internationally, moving from a concentration in the Middle East. Fun times.

I mean it took Germany 3 years to lose WW2, they were losing from the end of 1942 till 1945
MrAtlfan21 Except Germany had millions of troops vs other tens of millions of troops and even at the end of the war Germany still had hundreds of thousands of troops , as for Syria SAA has around maybe 150,000-350,000 (including NDF) whilst ISIS and rebels combined have around 200,000-500,000
Do you want to defeat an idea? Easy, give them a good education system, and a stable prosper society. That is, the west would have to invest not in keeping military, but in rebuilding those areas, and help them establish their own institutions. All based on critical thinking, and not some ideology.
But that last part is difficult, since USA itself is built on ideology. So why would they build a proper education elsewhere, when they don`t do it at home?
yep
maurcd - exactly why US imperialists should stay out of this. Long live Rojava!
@maurcd Here's the problem. Building better infrastructure and promoting education works when the violence isn't a multinational conflict where one side uses guerrilla warfare and particularly destructive methods of combat on top of propaganda and cultural domination. Even after the fight ends, and it's reduced to an idea, how are you going to tell a child his dad is someone who is incorrect in killing when that's all he's learned from his pop?
It's a pretty vicious cycle. I actually want to say that an oppressive dictator is one of the only way to keep this situation in check??? Someone like the Shaw of Iran but less westernized so that he can still connect with the people. Still introduce reform, but in more moderation to avoid the mess that happened when the Khomeinis pushed a conservative revolution.
Except that education and standard of living aren't linked to extremism/terrorism in that way. This is a myth which has been debunked.

No, that doesn't work. Look at Saudi Arabia! They have a good education system and a rich society. They are still radical extremists. There must be some more moderating influences.

Russian forces with the help of syrian army and iranian miltias didn't focus their attacks on ISIS, the only major attack against ISIS was in the historic city of Tadmur (palmyria) in syria.
Most of the fighting that the Russians/syrian did were against rebel groups that are supported by turkey/gulf and western countries. some of these rebel groups were affiliated with al-qeada (which is also an enemy of ISIS).
but direct attack against ISIS were usually limited. in syria the groups that fought ISIS the hardest were the kurdish and rebels, because they are competing for the same territories

How so?
What are you talking about? This video is very accurate
This is how you do a group presentation 👏
Nice video, a couple of things I would like to critique though:
1. You fail to mention that it is not the Turkish backed rebels anymore who fight ISIS in the West of Syria, it is Assad who does that. And the Tiger Force is giving ISIS one hell of a run for it's money actually. Yes, we all know Assad is an autocrat who killed thousands in his torture prisons, but the fact that he also quite effectively fights ISIS remains. As uncomfortable as this might be to acknowledge, it is still the truth.
2. ISIS' interpretation of Islam is not "extreme". The word extreme implies that it is something distorted and fringe. This is however not the case, they are practicing the most pure and most literal form of the Islamic faith that there is. They go to great lengths to follow the Quran, the Sunnah, and the Hadith in absolute meticulous detail. Their leader Abu-Bakr has a PhD from one of the most respected institutions for Islamic studies, the University of Cairo. Nothing they do is in any way unislamic, quite the opposite is the case.
3. The indoctrination with islamic ideas is not something that happens solely through the internet, there is a lot of hands-on indoctriantion in local mosques and through peers involved as well. Imams, scholars, and preachers who have contact to branches of ISIS and act as ideological operatives in the West play a huge role in leading people on the path to violence.
Bottlekiller >follows Quran
>Uses violence
Nah they messed up with using violence
It's not Turkish "backed" it's literally our army fighting in Syria dude
#2 is entirely wrong.
No one follows islam "purely". There's no such thing as "pure" Islam. 90% of their ideological backgrounds come from unauthenticated hadiths and not Qur'an.
Examples:
1: Who can be a caliph?
Using history, Islam's first 4 major Caliphs, Abu Bakr, Omar, Uthman, Ali, were descendants of the Prophet Muhammad. Who is Al Baghdadi? Some Iraqi Cleric who follows Salafism/Wahhabi Islam.
This, by itself, is proof that the idea of a caliphate, which is the main goal for ISIS, is simply idiotic. Also containing the fact that a caliphate should be chosen by all Muslims, *in the world* , which ISIS didnt even get 78% of all Muslim votes.
Sources:
//" _A caliphate (Arabic: خِلافة khilāfa) is a territory under the leadership of an Islamic steward known as a caliph (/ˈkælɪf, ˈkeɪ-/, Arabic: خَليفة khalīfah, pronunciation ), a person considered a religious successor to the Islamic prophet Muhammad (Muhammad ibn ʿAbdullāh) and a leader of the entire Muslim community._ " - Wikipedia
// "Qur’an (49:13): “O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise [each other]).”
What does isis do? The exact opposite.
// "Fight in the way of Allah those who *fight you* but do *not transgress*. Indeed. Allah does not like transgressors."
2:190
ISIS transgressed beyond bounds of Islamic thought. They killed and oppressed everyone who was not a Muslim that obviously did no harm. If the enemy was attacking in the way of speech or expression, God says:
2:153
"O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient."
ISIS is in no way patient about anything. They dont seek help from GOD even tho they SEEM as they are doing so. A real Muslim will wage Jihad against the struggle/self. I.e the meaning of jihad.
2: Here are examples From the Qur'an and you are to judge everything you see here if they relate to ISIS following "pure islam":
// read from Quran.com/9/1
To Quran.com/9/16 or the entire chapter if you have the time. *Thoroughly. Do Not read some verses and leave out others.*
// Read this Article on Quran 9:29, chapter 9 on the battles that took place between the Byzantines!
discover-the-truth.com/2014/06/03/examining-quran-929-does-islam-sanction-the-killing-of-christians-and-jews/
3: Historical analysis.
Read about Caliph Omar's letter to Jerusalem after conquering it.
www.livingislam.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=809:latheef-farook&catid=77:current-affairs&Itemid=520
Bottlekiller here are a few examples of unislamic things that they did/do:
1. Burning alive a Muslim pilot, لا يعذب بالنار إلى رب النار. Which translates to: none should torture with fire except the God of fire. (As in hell.)
2. Their uses of women there. I don't need to go into details on this one.
3. Killing other Muslims as cited in the Quran is forbidden.
4. I can't back these up with evidence because I really don't babe the time. but terrorist attacks and killing civilians are not something we are taught here. When Islam was spreading wars were always fought against men. Elders and women and children were not harmed.
Bottlekiller #2 ISIS interpretation of islam is pretty far from pure when the mass majority of Muslims in the world oppose it.
You know this war is a mess when the rebels rebels get attacked by rebels...
You guys are amazing. Continue enlighting thoughtful people of the world.
The most interesting and also most terrifying fact in this video was that "ISIS turns from a place to an idea". In germany we once had the terroristic group called the RAF and we managed to not only stop them but also to destroy the idea. They're gone. ISIS will be a lot harder, because now it won't be bound to a location anymore but I think it is possible to fight the idea of ISIS.
actually syria is getting help from russia iran and turkey not from the us instead us is hust destroying syria

It's strange that people with names like "Aleksandr" are very eager to give credit to Russia for "helping" but when the US does the same, it's suddenly destroying Syria.

This aged perfectly
This is an interesting one to watch now
Question for you guys: Would you think it would be a better situation for ISIS to be taken down and let these problems you mentioned manifest or keep the current ISIS situation where it is and let the current problems with ISIS manifest?
That, is hard to Awnser. I reckon NOT giving Them a state is most important.
they're both equally bad options
To defeat the idea there isn't a need to control borders because that's already failed but more education and responsiveness to mainly young people in schools and colleges because they're most easily influenced.
And take out the people that seek to preach their ideas, make laws which will make it eaier to lock them up etc...
Thought crime enabler it is Killer Destroyer.
You cant defeat an idea, if you could defeat an idea we wouldnt have any nazis in present day. More education and critical thinking is great but actions taken is what matters, not ideology. An idea without any followers is just a book on the shelf, or a concept. It has no material threat.
Henbot Yeah but the number of Nazis willing to die for their ideologies is nothing compared to misled and radicalised Muslims willing to die for terrorist groups.
Henbot I think we need to stop these Shuyookh with extremist ideas and educate the young Muslim children in schools more about Islam. Nowadays it's just sad how some people teach their kids Islam.. "Don't do this or you'll go to Hell" from like the age of 6.
I love how you see Turkey, Russia and the USA and then just Tajikistan for some reason

Great video. Informative, quick and clear. The only thing I didn't like was that you showed the faces of the terrorists who carried out the San Bernardino and Orlando attacks. These people aren't just doing those attacks to further the ideals of ISIS, they're trying to get their own five minutes of fame. Showing their faces just shows other potential terrorists that the media is going to focus on them, their face, and what they did. The media should cover the attacks but should focus on the victims and the first responders, not the scum that attacked innocents.
Big takeaway: Isis fighters were not just the men. But the women and the children too.

Ak47 , ryt ?
Spoiler Alert - A pandemic 😷
Its nt USA but Russia which defeated ISIS.
yes
But Russia themselves taliban were defeated, shame on Russia
And where is the Syrian army on that map???!
A wise man once said and will say "counter terrorists win"
Props to the Iraqi lions who fought against the backwards thoughts and the extremism and brought their country back to the right track.
Iraq was never meant to be but a modern country looking forward to life and eager to develop.
Kurdistan has suffered so much in history. They deserve independence
Lila H yeah from Isis
Long live Rojava!
Lila H They were the ones who committed genocide in Turkey against the other minorities. Where ever they capture land in Syria they relocate the native population (by force) to gain territory. Whoever is still left in those areas that they control are second class citizens.
Energized Gaming Guy that was a century ago
Energized Gaming Guy, you are lying. kurds dont and have never replaced any minority in all history, on the contrary, they have always been replaced and ethnically cleansed. the local government in rojava is the most secular and democratic one in the region. it is participated by every minority that is living there. so, stop spreading false claims. no one is buying it.
Why don't you mention the Syrian Army & Russia?
You forgot iran too
This didnt age well
Ofcourse not, it’s VOX!
This needs to be updated
The biggest and most effective fight against these terrorist and radically extremist ideologies remains in the hands of Imams and community muslim leaders here in the US. It is encouraging to see many Imams today working towards this, in the war of ideologies. Great Video!
secularism is only solution
Islah | إصلاح Did you know 70000 major Scholars signed a Fatwa against ISIL?
There's this kind of frog who sounds like cat.. IT WAS AMAZING.. what a cute little bastard. i wanna have one someday
"Ideas, Mr. Creedy, are bulletproof."
It’s not impossible to defeat an idea if your idea wins over the hearts and minds of the people
Impossible to defeat an idea? Simple! Just forget it!
What idea?
We can try to forget, but do you really think they will forget too?
Wai- what were we talking about?
People who have read Orwell know that it is impossible to defeat an idea, just as you stated. Incredible video from Vox.
WTF you give no credit to the SAA which has been taking the bulk of ISIS along with the Iraqi army and those FSA dogs barely have even fought ISIS atleast the Kurds fight them also
This aged well.
2019, do a sequel
What happens when Isis falls? America says they did all the effort when most of it was Russians and native Syrians
'America has destroyed the biggest thread to America and the rest of the world since the Soviet Union. America has proven itself to be great, again!' - Trump 2020
You're a bleeding heart who will give anyone but america credit for a victory, do not forget that russia is doing this not to support stability in the region but to support assad's government, the United States is supporting stability and democracy in the region by funding Iraq and Syrian Militias, Russia only attacks ISIS because ISIS is in Russia's way for a syria that is a puppet of Russia, ISIS is in the US' way because the US wants most of the middle east to be free and stable.
Edmond Cromwell and how are you so sure about this?
Tjalling Appelhof stop you’re making us look stupid
Hello by doing what
Iran helped allot in destroying isis, why dont you mention that?????
Well.... It's a pretty long list of helpers. My country wasn't mention either.
if your name is Erik Thomsen, you are one of the reason why they are there in the first place.
Lol.
Iran helped spark this multi-factional syrian war.
Lets be honest Hezbollah did a lot of work clearing them out in syria...
Arash Behforooz my brother the American propaganda has hypnotized these fools and now they only give credit to Saudi Arabia and there allies. Who will help more Iran the neighbors or people million miles away?
Good job bravo 6 and the SAS team
What happens when they’re gone?? Syrians and Iraqis would live in peace
@@HAIHAI-vo6tx Bruh what does Bangladesh have to do with this?
“Isis, is losing”
*welp, that’s all I need to know*
(Walks back to desk with CS.GO playing)😂😂
Well, IS-IS becomes WAS-WAS. Simple.
This video has aged well.
There is a big difference between having a terrorist organization control cities, people and industry, and having them radicalize random loosers on the internet. While its unfortunate and very difficult to stop random terrorists who might go on a knife killing spree, it's not comparable to the damage a organized group could do if they have the logistics and industrial capacity to produce bombs.
I liked the video and agreed with most of it until the end. "It's impossible... impossible to beat an idea." No it's not. History has massive graveyards of dead ideas. I'm not saying it's easy or quick, but it damn sure it's "impossible... impossible".
