Vladimir Putin has been ruling Russia since 1999. In that time he has shaped the country into an authoritarian and militaristic society. The Soviet Union dissolved into 15 new countries, including the new Russian Federation. In Putin’s eyes, Russia had just lost 2 million square miles of territory. But Putin’s regime has also developed and fostered the most effect cyber hacker army in the world and he’s used it to wreak havoc in the West. But the election of Donald Trump brings new hope for the Putin vision. Trump’s rhetoric has been notably soft on Russia. He could lift sanctions and weaken NATO, potentially freeing up space for Putin’s Russia to become a dominant power once again.

As a russian, i would like to say that the main reason why Putin is still in power is more people and elite politicla impotence than other. After USSR russians were afraid of politica and just wanted to live a good life like western citizens. In Russia in 2000, there was a popular opinion that you need to live your life and not get involved in politics
There is just no any other options of good politicians in Russia to replace Putin in my opinion.
Like literally noone can keep Russia somewhat “respectable” on global arena.

One of the north eastern provinces of Georgia wanted to break away from Georgia to rejoin Russia so while the world was watching the Olympics Georgia went into that province militarily and attacked first. Russia saw the opportunity and obviously welcomed them into the fold by cutting right through Georgia in like 2 or 3 days....eventually they left. But to just say Putin invaded Georgia is inaccurate just like saying Putin was unprovoked by the west during his current jacked up war in Ukraine

Since Georgia's independent politics for Russia is unacceptable and percievs this as a security threat. ['scale' I'm assuming, it got cut off at that point] got translated to whatever the subtitles were. Or maybe he really said that and the subtitles are just out of sync, I'll need to find the original video.
*EDIT:* Nevermind, I found a video from AP Archive with the original interview. He actually did say those things, he just said it a few seconds before the part Vox clipped and the subtitles lag behind.

Unfortunately, Ukraine wasn't part of NATO when the invasion occurred, though Ukraine (plus Georgia) had been planning to be in NATO for a long time, but their plans are put on hold. But hopefully when the time comes... they will, but I am quite afraid of war... to be honest.
