The dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir is one of the longest running conflicts. Ever since Britain left India in 1947 and hastily drew borders demarcating a Hindu-majority India and a Muslim-majority Pakistan, Kashmir, located right between the two, has been fervently claimed by both nations.
India and Pakistan’s first war was fought over Kashmir’s status as the the newly independent countries were being formed. After over a year of bloody conflict the UN stepped in and brokered a ceasefire that drew a line down the middle of Kashmir and gave a portion of the territory to India and the remainder to Pakistan. This arrangement was meant to be temporary. Once the violence settled a vote was to be held that would allow Kashmiris to decide their own future.
But more than 70 years later, Kashmiris have yet to vote on their status. They remain stuck between two nuclear nations locked in a dangerous conflict with no end in sight.

The latest crisis between India and Pakistan over Kashmir comes as India’s Hindu nationalist government has revoked Article 370 of India’s Constitution, which had for decades afforded the Muslim-majority state of Jammu and Kashmir - India’s side of Kashmir - substantial autonomy over its own affairs.

Something you missed was the Kashmiri Hindu Genocide. After ‘87, the group of radicals started targeting Kashmiri Hindus. There were a lot of Hindus that lived in Kashmir. They had to run for their lives. A lot of them settled in Jammu. The stories/accounts of these events are horrific. Hence, this worsened the situation for rest of the Muslims. The hope for Peace was lost as Indian state retaliated similarly with giving more powers to military in that area. 3. No opinions of people from Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Chinese part of Kashmir (Aksai Chin).

So that makes sense in that they keep suppressing the Kashmiri vote. Either nation doesn't want Kashmir to be independent. I think the voices of the citizens say it best, they know that the fight is not about them, but the land.
@meow it matters more because if Pakistan occupies Kashmir they will have a strategic advantage in attacking India. Right now the mountains block them. Indians don't trust the Pakistanis enough to allow them to attack us so easily if they chose to
Thanks Hassan. I was waiting for this part and it never came.
Geopolitical or not. The factor that people need to die over it when theyre not involved is bullshit. But at the sametime prevent china from any gains. They should be working together against china since china is trying to push as much as possible on geopolitical positions. 1) The water problem. The region is the birthplace of all the major rivers flowing across the two nations. Whoever controls Kashmir, controls the water supply. The water is especially important for Pakistan, which accounts for a major amount of its irrigation supply.
2) The Kashmiri Pandits. The insurgency of 90s made a large number of hindus leave Kashmir. The refugees are still not able to settle in Kashmir since then.
It's not about water first of all . It's about China's aggression against India since forever and Pakistan is used as a tool and religion a way to recruit soldiers .
Earlier it was supported by USA and pushed by CIA but back then Russia supported India so CIA backed off and India was also not very strong .
Today India has a strong market and Modi is tough when it comes to national dealings so USA supported India first time as India kept saying no to preesure from USA regarding trade .
Plus India also always had good relations in the middle East with all countries and regimes so here Pakistan got no support from OIC .
Even in UN India got support . Only countries to oppose it were Pakistan and China .
Secondly the community cleansing of kashmiri pandits and Sufis was so that if a referendum is held in Kashmir there LL be no one to oppose .

For those who are saying " what about the exodus? ". Well even before it, the pundits were a minute percentage of the population. At the time of partition they made up only 6% of the population and continued to reduce due to migration ( becaz of land reforms ). Now the exodus is a whole other debate and i dont see how India can use it to justify the atrocities it is committing in Kashmir. I mean the fact that about 700,000 indian troops are stationed in IOK is a clear sign of human rights being suppressed.
Also its funny how when Pakistan helps the Kashmirs, the term terrorism is used but even though the video clearly shows the atrocities of the Indian Government, it doesn't associate the word terrorism for them ( *sigh* Islamophobia ). The guy who carried out the Palwama attack is a freedom fighter and not a terrorist, like all other kashmiri martyrs.

My grandmother was Kashmiri. I would say the exodus of Hindus from that region after the conflict started in the 40s, has led to a significant disparity in what Kashmir once was and what it is now. I'm not sure if it's as just as it is presented to be, to simply poll the people of current Kashmir about what they think without giving any voice to all the Kashmiris who felt forced out of the region- by many of those same people who remained or migrated in. I guess that's one of the problems with multi generational conflicts. My grandmother's family will never get justice.
My mom is Kashmiri. When my grandmother was a child her house was burnt down my Muslims. During the 80’s Muslims would threaten to rape the Hindus over speakers (you know, those speakers that are used for Muslims to pray). My great- grandmother wanted to stay in Kashmir but unfortunately she passed away in the mid to late 80’s. The Muslims demanded that we gave up our family home, where our family had been living in for generations. My mom hasn’t been to Kashmir for over 30 years now. One of my moms friends was forced to live in a migration camp for a year. During that time her father died from the stress. It’s really sad to see what’s happened to Kashmir .
