The latest crisis between India and Pakistan over Kashmir comes as India’s Hindu nationalist government has revoked Article 370 of India’s Constitution, which had for decades afforded the Muslim-majority state of Jammu and Kashmir - India’s side of Kashmir - substantial autonomy over its own affairs. I really love all of Vox videos but they have missed out on some important points here. 1. No mention of Kashmiri Pandits/Hindus. 2. No opinions of people from other areas of Jammu and Ladakh which were also part of the "Hindu Monarch's" territory. 3. No opinions of people from Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Chinese part of Kashmir (Aksai Chin). 4. No mention of Racism in Kashmir against Indians and its role in secessionist movement. This would only have been a well rounded piece if all these things were also included. This video only seems a little lazy. I hope I provided some constructive criticism and have been of some help.
Aksai Chin.. (OCCUPIED BY CHINA) Has almost no population.. Its a barren piece of rock and mountains. People in Jammu are not Facing suppression. Kashmiri Pandits were not Rehabilitated properly by the Indian Govt and are still being used as a political tool by the Political Parties. Everywhere in Jammu and Kaashmir except Parts of Kashmir Valley.. There is full freedom. Parts of Kashmir Valley are run as per the Draconian AFSPA and SOG is allowed to conduct ops as per their will. Thia has been counter productive. As many innocents have been degraded or have disappeared. So all the problem lies with that part of Kashmir only. And even most parts of Ladakh didnt want article 370 removed, it was done forcefully. Our pro India Leaders were arrested and put under detention. For the record. I am pro India..and I am an Indian. But there is a way of doing things.. And our Govt has failed to realise it. Something you missed was the Kashmiri Hindu Genocide. After ‘87, the group of radicals started targeting Kashmiri Hindus. There were a lot of Hindus that lived in Kashmir. They had to run for their lives. A lot of them settled in Jammu. The stories/accounts of these events are horrific. Hence, this worsened the situation for rest of the Muslims. The hope for Peace was lost as Indian state retaliated similarly with giving more powers to military in that area. Also the Indian Kashmiri Politicians played popularism and promoted Radical Ideology while their family lived on Indian Govt’s money and their children settled in abroad.

The Interesting thing is that Kashmir is just 20% of India's Jammu and Kashmir. People tend to ignore Jammu and Ladakh. This ignorance makes this conflict more complex.
The video only touches on obvious points and misses on 2 major points, I think. 1) The water problem. The region is the birthplace of all the major rivers flowing across the two nations. Whoever controls Kashmir, controls the water supply. The water is especially important for Pakistan, which accounts for a major amount of its irrigation supply. 2) The Kashmiri Pandits. The insurgency of 90s made a large number of hindus leave Kashmir. The refugees are still not able to settle in Kashmir since then.
It's not about water first of all . It's about China's aggression against India since forever and Pakistan is used as a tool and religion a way to recruit soldiers . Earlier it was supported by USA and pushed by CIA but back then Russia supported India so CIA backed off and India was also not very strong . Today India has a strong market and Modi is tough when it comes to national dealings so USA supported India first time as India kept saying no to preesure from USA regarding trade . My grandmother was Kashmiri. I would say the exodus of Hindus from that region after the conflict started in the 40s, has led to a significant disparity in what Kashmir once was and what it is now. I'm not sure if it's as just as it is presented to be, to simply poll the people of current Kashmir about what they think without giving any voice to all the Kashmiris who felt forced out of the region- by many of those same people who remained or migrated in. Correct. This video is half truth which only covers the overview of the issues. You can't have a referendum at a place where the demographic was drastically changed.
But who forced the exodus? That's what the video is showing. It's a vicious cycle. The exodus was a by-product of the hatred. Kashmiri pundits is a minority in the region.
It's also important to note that "kashmir" also includes Jammu and ladakh who aren't Kashmiris and have nothing to do with them. Ladakh is Buddhist while Jammu is hindu. I'm a Jammu dogra and it'd be better if jammu and kashmir get separated from each other. Jammu needs to become it's own state , we aren't kashmiri 🇮🇳
Altamish Tahir As as Kashmiri, even though the video is not biased it certainly leaves out a lot, The massacre of Muslims in Jammu in 1948, the slow separatist movement in the second half of the 1900's, the rigged 1987 elections, the kashmiri Pandit killings, a lot of what happened during 90's and early 2000's.
Kashmir is named after Rishi (sage) Kashyapa. It's population was a Hindu population, and it would still have had a strong Hindu population, known as Kashmiri Pandits (scholars) if not for the Islamist t3rr0rists who have committed genocide of the worst possible kind, including on women and children. What is left is a Muslim majority population who are now calling themselves as Kashmiris and asking for independence, but what about the Kashmiri Pandits who want to get back to their homes but cannot because of the very same people who are claiming to be victims?

@4:35 I think this is the most valid point. Kashmir is being labelled to a territorial dispute. It's much bigger than that. Not just a piece of land. People living there are suffering. The environment and ecology are suffering (floods and landslides). The focus should be on improving and developing Kashmir which can only come from peace. All three sides should take a hit on the ego and focus on future and betterment of Kashmir rather than control over Kashmir. The situation is very complex and has convoluted into such a big political mess that it cannot be solved going on the same path. Only through empathy and understanding and a change of mindset of the leadership can solve this.

@@AdityaKar That might be true except the majority of war crimes and mass killings on innocent Kashmiris have been conducted by the Indian military. Talk about British colonialism. They split the region into two parts for a reason. This kind of separation maneuver is very common to stunt the growth of the former colonized region. I am Indonesian and the Dutch was using the same maneuver to our Western Papua. Thank God we have prominent leader back then, Sukarno, and the support of USA government under JF Kennedy. May the conflict in Kashmir soon be solved peacefully. War only brings destruction and more conflict, and more income to the arms dealer or any interested parties, which eventually will promote more conflict. Vicious cycle indeed.
The reason was to prevent a feared civil war between the two religious groups, which was a very real threat. If they wanted to divide and weaken, why make India so much bigger than Pakistan? I'm not saying it was a perfect plan, it was very flawed, but doing nothing was not an alternative unless you wanted possibly even more bloodshed.
@@Croz89 India is much bigger because it had a much larger population. Hundreds of millions of Muslims also chose India. Plus, all those Civil Wars were a result of British colonialism only. @@NG-nf2mz My point was partition (and partition specifically) wasn't done with the intent to weaken ex-colonial powers on the Brits left (if so it clearly hasn't been very successful!). As you said they India is bigger because of population and religious issues. Yes, you can argue the civil wars would not have happened if the Brits hadn't spent decades stoking religious tensions for divide and rule in the past, but what's done is done and we need to look at the options they had at that current point in time. Do nothing, high likelihood of a civil war. Partition, still a high likelihood of conflict. It was a choice between two bad options. The question is which one was worse than the other. Perhaps if partition had been done better (maybe go the Kosovo route and make Kashmir an independent state) things would have been a lot less bloody. We'll never know.
@@Croz89 The Brits weren't malicious, just negligent. Once they decided (or were persuaded) to leave they lost interest in their former colonies and washed their hands of them, resulting in conflict and chaos.

Plus India also always had good relations in the middle East with all countries and regimes so here Pakistan got no support from OIC .
Even in UN India got support . Only countries to oppose it were Pakistan and China .
Secondly the community cleansing of kashmiri pandits and Sufis was so that if a referendum is held in Kashmir there LL be no one to oppose .

There were two Pakistan..east Pakistan and west Pakistan...west Pakistan was making progress and east was ignored by the West Pakistan..people of East Pakistan (Bangladesh) were oppressed, beaten and controlled. People of East Pakistan started to illegally migrate India because of the oppression many Hindus also fled from the east Pakistan ...Indira Gandhi (prime minister of India) wrote to American officials regarding the issue.. India was already suffering from poverty and more and more people kept coming and it was getting hard to control economy and other issues...during this time there were talks about communism within the borders of east Pakistan...which troubled USA because they were already at Cold War with USSR, they were worried about rising communism in the Asian region...as the basic psychology goes... Democratic countries have strong ties with other democratic countries, Communist with communist, Muslims with Muslims..
Pakistan was backed by China....India could have taken help from America but geographically it's too far to send backup if war broke out any moment....so Indira Gandhi send a message to USSR officials regarding the situation....Indo-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. The Indo-Soviet Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation was a treaty signed between India and the Soviet Union in August 1971 that specified mutual strategic cooperation (according to this treaty if any of the two countries get attacked by other countries then the second country will come to help the first country. ) India hoped that USSR will help but India wasn't sure if they will get involved to help India....so Indian government decided that they will fight alone.. As there was no choice....USA got the Intel about USSR and India's conversations and friendliness so they decided to support Pakistan and used their influence and told other countries to attack India to help Pakistan (Countries I mentioned above)...USSR got the Intel about USA's move against India and came to aid India as India was there ally and friend and also the largest importer of USSR weapons..all countries send their naval Forces towards India and so did USSR....other countries didn't knew that USSR was coming to help India with planes, ships and submarines loaded with nuclear weapons ...USSR gave open warning to every other country that if Single artillery hits the Indian soil be prepared to drown, USSR gave threat to China too even though they were both communist...all countries turned back as everyone knew how powerful USSR was and won't hesitate to use nuclear weapons if needed.....and so the war was just fought between India and Pakistan (USSR didn't interfere between them as they believe it was a conflict between two nations but was prepared to help if someone else came in against India) ....
Pakistan was helped by USA..they were supplied with weaponry and other stuff..USSR provided weapons to India
And Israel provided sensitive Intel and satellite imagery for strategic advantage as Israel too has troubled neighbors and Jews were never discriminated in India and Judaism has existed in India for last 2000 years so they felt special connection with India..

Vicious cycle indeed.
we had all the resources to become one country but Islam came in the middle
The reason was to prevent a feared civil war between the two religious groups, which was a very real threat. If they wanted to divide and weaken, why make India so much bigger than Pakistan? I'm not saying it was a perfect plan, it was very flawed, but doing nothing was not an alternative unless you wanted possibly even more bloodshed.
@@Croz89 India is much bigger because it had a much larger population. Hundreds of millions of Muslims also chose India. Plus, all those Civil Wars were a result of British colonialism only. Vox has released another video, explaining the divide and rule policy. It is a well detailed and illustrated video. Give it a watch
