HEY VOX. i am from tamilnadu. Till now the reason for the conflict was not know to the people. All we knew was that the Sri Lankan government has tried to forcefully stop innocent fishermen. But it turns out that they were trying to save their country's economy. It is unfortunate that no one here in tamilnadu knows the reason for the conflict and no one tries to look for any solution. Hope things get better.

Normally I'm not on the side of "if you can't do the time don't do the crime" mentality, because a lot of laws are unjust, but these fishermen do it purely for profit. I have little sympathy.
I'm from Tamilnadu but I don't live in rameshwaram but as a child i spent a lot of time near the area cause of relatives still go there quite often you should also understand these ppl are poor and the gov used them to boost the economy but now to continue with it to help the economy and to feed their kids they need to do this. The indian gov is now ignoring their pleas of help to change their fishing ways but they completely ignore them. It's a risk they take to feed their families they live on a day to day income basis.
That is a very complicated border so I will not say that it's 100% the fault of fishermen . You can see their condition they are not very rich ,government should take a step forward and give them big boats so that they can fish deep into the sea . There are other reasons why the navy is guarding the borders: 1. People are illegally coming into Sri Lanka and there are people that are illegally leaving Sri Lanka to settle in other countries. 2. Drug trading business happens in the borders as well. (Recently there was a Corona outbreak among the fishermen's in that region)
I'm sorry for the Indian fishermen, but I say BAN all trawler-type ships, PERIOD, ya gotta find some *other* way to get yer fish! Trawling is too destructive.
They are banned in Portugal, all other countries are late. It is very hypocritical to talk about plastics and global warming but not a direct action such as destructive fishing.

I live in Sri Lanka right now. When driving around in the area of Sri Lanka that was part of the war, you can seriously sense it. Those areas are very under developed. In fact my husband’s family fled that area in the beginning of the war and moved south. We recently went to visit his family that moved back after the war. My husband showed me around a vacant village. In the walls of the vacant homes were bullet holes and overgrown with trees since there were no roofs anymore. We didn’t stay long since elephants are now ruling that area but, I still visit those rooms with bullet holes in my day dreams. I think of what Sri Lanka could be if this war never happened!!
It would be Singapore, before Singapore became Singapore- Li Kuan Yu came to Sri Lanka before the war and was so inspired by what he learned he built Singapore to be just like it. When there is repeated breach and the Indian side continue to do it, Srilankan authorities need to take firm action. What's at stake is Srilankan people's livelihood as well as their ecology - That's high stake obviously. India wouldn't tolerate it if it was the other way round. The Indian govt. choose to do nothing, which is shameful to me as an Indian. It is stealing. I can understand dependence over the years for Indian side of fisherman too, but what's not ours is not ours. There has to be an impetus from govt. to supplement their livelihood without stealing from a neighbour and let go of revenues from these waters. "I was slapped once and it took a week for me to recover" at 8:19. I know this is a serious issue and I am sorry for laughing but that caught me off guard. 😂
The subtitles are wrong. As a person who can understand Tamil and speak it to a certain extent, he didn't just say 'slapped'. He used a word that means something like 'thrashed'. I didn't understand the Tamil exactly but he also said something about his eye being swollen later. There were no subtitles for that. Come on, he clearly spoke like 2-3 sentences, but there was a subtitle only for one sentence
the translation is something more like 'beaten' rather than slapped. he clearly mentions having a wound there. They use sticks and all other sorts of devices on fishermen after they are caught. not justifying the indians' actions, but it was closer to beaten than slapped
As an Indian I knew about Indian fishermen crossing the border to fish & this story. Good for Vox for educating about this to larger audience. Just a small extra information : State government, local government & even panchayat (mayoral type) government have warned these fishermen regularly to not cross the border but they don't listen. They are not willing to put little effort to go on eastern free side to get the fishes because it's little longer & tougher. Srilankan border side is easier & well practiced for them for last 20+years so they don't mind risking arrest over this. Also if middle man in sale of fisheries is cut they will get extra profit then they don't mind putting effort to go on longer route on free eastern side. Local & state government should work towards cutting down the middlemen but middlemen is controlled by churches & churches control the local politics.

I love India, but guys, here you are not only crossing the border to steal foods which are not yours, but you are also destroying the fishing places of Sri Lanka! You have no excuses!
On this one I am 100% with Sri Lanka
Please know both sides before saying anything , Indian fisherman cross the border because there is an island called kachathivu which was native fishing ground for Indians but it was given away by Indian government to srilanka without the acceptance of Indian fisherman , and hence they still consider it as their territory and cross the border
@@anitagarg3316 You, you did not read my comment!

As an Indian, I'm sorry about this whole mess and the hardships it caused to our neighbours. I had no idea about this ordeal faced by the Sri Lankan fisherman, maybe because I live up in the Northern India but still that's no excuse. I hope our government steps in to solve this issue, till then I believe Sri Lankan Navy has every right to enforce its sovereignty over its territorial waters and deal with those who cross the border as they deem fit.

It's sad, that people were arrested. But we can't blame the people that came over the border, it's our land and they are taking the sea bed off and the fish. Though it is sad.
It's so unfair. The Sri Lankan fishermen depend on those resources for their livelihood. The Indian fishermen used trawlers and depleted their own fishing resources, now they want to do the same for Sri Lanka.

Actually what he said translated into English was that he got hit on the face repeatedly. The subtitles in this case were wrong.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 that's hilarious
Damn! Imagine being slapped so hard i takes you a week to recover lmao
That's the sri Lankan navy for you 🤣
The subtitles are wrong.
@@heathenfire Yeah could've almost guessed that it got lost in translation. Nevertheless, thanks for the clarification!

As an Indian I knew about Indian fishermen crossing the border to fish & this story. Good for Vox for educating about this to larger audience.
Just a small extra information :
State government, local government & even panchayat (mayoral type) government have warned these fishermen regularly to not cross the border but they don't listen.
You mentioned churches. So most of the fishing community in Rameshwaram comprise Christians??
@@shravan7623 Yes. Churches are extremely powerful in Coastal Tamil Nadu. Heavy donations that come from US, UK & Norwegian is used for aggressive proselytisation & converting all poor & lower middle class people.
@ARPIT PATEL I do believe what tony mentioned is true, churches in coastal Tamilnadu region are famous and powerful too. There is good and there is bad in everything, and many times the balance goes for a toss.
This was the comment I'm looking for....
The whole coast of India is under the control of churches
As an Indian and many of us would agree on Sri Lankan acting strictly against Indian fishermen.. they did a crime they deserves to be punished
um... don't cross their border and don't steal, maybe?
Imprisoning, yes. Confiscation of boats - yes. Killing - NO!
Nah it's our fault
Ram So India should have the right to all the waters near Sri Lanka, and destroy the sea life with fishing trawlers? It’s not Sri Lanka’s fault Indians destroyed all the sea waters and now want to go to Sri Lankan waters to do the same. The sea waters are Sri Lankan livelihood, why should India cross the barrier and steal fish?
Tamil Nadu + Tamil Eelam as a single country = the problem solved.
By touching less know topics, you have made the international community much more aware about Indian subcontinent. Keep it up Johny! 👍👍
Tamilnadu has quarells with its Neighbours Karnataka, kerala. Now I came to know they didn't leave Srilanka also 😂

Every country has every right to enforce its sovereignty over its territorial waters and deal with those who cross the border as they deem fit but both countries have the right to arrest anyone who is crossing the border. Sri lankans must enforce control over its own territorial waters and protect they resources.
