For those of you wondering why Iceland was so important to NATO: Their position in the middle of the channel between Greenland and the UK and Norway made it a chokepoint that Soviet subs had to get thru to get to the Atlantic, and Iceland based listening Sonar stations made it immeasurably easier to locate and track them. Losing Iceland as a host to these would have made it much easier for Soviet subs to slip thru and get close to the coast of Europe and the USA undetected.

And if you want to go by national status, then Greenland would be the most Western part of Europe since it is a partly selfgoverning body under the Kingdom of Denmark. *Argentina looking at a deprived Britain which lost to Iceland* Argentina: If we take the Falklands, surely they won't respond Margaret Thatcher :.....
@Toucan Chat I mean people have a right to live where they were born it isn't immoral or wrong for Britain have a war to protect its citizens from invasion by a foreign fascist power especially given that war basically allowed the junta to be toppled and allowed the Argentine people to have more freedom and democracy
@Toucan Chat I mean, as a Brit, it was worth the expenditure to ensure that the Falklands, which minus one persons' vote, wished to remain 'British' controlled. And our expenditure and suffering for WW2? Also worth fighting for. Though I will agree that the first was needlessly wasteful. But the good that came from the Falklands was the freedom of it's people to speak the language they wished and to run themselves how they wished. Arguably even to call themselves what they wished.

Fantastic video Johnny. Really enjoyable. I'm usually covered in cod every day, as a technician at one of the plants, so yeah, I can confirm we really love cod. The truth is though, most people grew up eating haddock because cod was to expensive or was sold to England for fish and chips. Boiled haddock, butter and potatoes is still at lunch in many schools on Mondays. The one thing that you could have mentioned is the net cutters they started using in the second war to cut the wires on the trawlers. That really pissed Britts, and it's so simple in principle. There is one fish we I would say love more then cod, and that's capelin. That's what the puffins live on and is what's the difference between if we build a tunnel this year or not at all. I really enjoy this Iceland series. Good stuff.

It should be said that many other nations quickly came to recognize the benefits of the much larger Exclusive Economic Zones, and so backed Icelands claims.
Keep the videos coming. Very informative and entertaining.
Me, a Portuguese, eating a cod dish while watching a video claiming Iceland is the biggest cod lover: well… this is interesting…
Edit: Me, an Azorean, watching a video claiming the west most point of Europe is a place in Iceland: well… so Flores island is what?
Don't start Cod Wars 4 😂
@@Ikbeneengeit ahaha no way! 😂 Besides, we don’t have cod in our waters and we stoped fishing it in the North Atlantic after our dictatorship. Now we import it from who does; expensive but intrinsic in our culture.
Flores Indonesia kah??
Is your parents Indian?
Flores is not a part of Europe Geologically. It is on the North American tectonic plate. And if you want to go by national status, then Greenland would be the most Western part of Europe since it is a partly selfgoverning body under the Kingdom of Denmark. But the part of Iceland he shows is on the American plate too, so it is not the most western part by any definition.
I love how we got an impromptu tour of Iceland in the middle of COD WAR
This video is anmasterpiece of story telling through video and an absolute joy to watch. Thank you and well done
Excellent piece that intertwines war, international law, and cod with beautiful touristy landscapes.
Come on you missed the opportunity to call this "The Cod Father"

This actually kinda reminds me of the Oyster Wars that happened in the Chesapeake Bay between Maryland and Virginia in the late 19th to mid 20th century. Maryland’s Natural Resources Department actually has a memorial to the people who died in it in the state capital of Annapolis.
Wait, aren't they both US states? Can they do that? Wouldn't the US (the Union) just rule the issue?
Took a shot everytime he said "Fish & Chips", now I'm an alcoholic

*Argentina looking at a deprived Britain which lost to Iceland*
Argentina: If we take the Falklands, surely they won't respond
Margaret Thatcher :.....
Narrator: Yeaaaaa, what happened next was his final famous words.
@Toucan Chat I mean people have a right to live where they were born it isn't immoral or wrong for Britain have a war to protect its citizens from invasion by a foreign fascist power especially given that war basically allowed the junta to be toppled and allowed the Argentine people to have more freedom and democracy
@@matthewblairrains6032 to be fair 500 years ago u didn’t even know falklands existed , but I get the point of people being born there
@Toucan Chat I mean, as a Brit, it was worth the expenditure to ensure that the Falklands, which minus one persons' vote, wished to remain 'British' controlled.
And our expenditure and suffering for WW2? Also worth fighting for. Though I will agree that the first was needlessly wasteful.
But the good that came from the Falklands was the freedom of it's people to speak the language they wished and to run themselves how they wished. Arguably even to call themselves what they wished.
Imagine if margerat thatcher was PM during any one of the cod wars

If Europe would be a family, then Iceland would be everyone‘s favourite but batshit crazy cousin.
Love you guys! Greetings from Switzerland!
As a icelander its true we kinda are not right in the head. And i love you switzerland
And the UK is the crazy cousin that has too many kids
That's so true

“Um, Puffins?”
“YES!”
Ok, so, is it possible that Johnny and Izzie are interested in adopting another, possibly older child?
I volunteer as tribute! - I’m not very large, so would be easy pack-and-go for travel!
😅😅.
15:42 Except in that case Portugal could also claim that the Azores are the westernmost point in Europe lol
And France's borders technically include all their overseas territories so Europe stretches to South America with French Guiana
@@bloody_sais Exactly
@@bloody_sais the EU territory kinda does, but not Europe as a continent. Depends on which most western point you actually want
Or France and Holland in the Caribbean?
Even though I personally consider Europe as just a glorified peninsula connected to a much larger landmass, she did say "continental Europe" which from my understanding does not include offshore islands like the British Isles, and most of Iceland is technically a part of the North American Plate according to geologists.
Hey over her from Britain! 🇬🇧 don’t know if you found this out on our travels, but fish and chips was so important to us that during WW2 it was one of the few this never rationed! It was classed as cheep and plentiful!
Wish I knew this during 2016 Euros especially during Iceland vs England.
And instead it happened during England vs Italy
That was Part 4!!!!!
I’m saying the same thing 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Was the UK fishing vessels majority Scottish not just about England.
Dude, this music is amazing, it's kind of like a theme for your channel
What a great way to combine work travel and family. Johnny always tells a great story. Because he 'is' a great story.
Damn, just rubbing the salt into the wound. Just as humiliating as England losing to Iceland in the last Euros.

I mean power is nothing, USA lost to Canada when the USA with its massive military at the time tried to invade Canada, lol 😂
@@memepros5433 just canada, or the British empire as well.
@@adamgriffin8197 also our military was hot garbage then. The British burned down the White House. Lol. Post probably like 1944 the US and Soviet Union were by far the world’s largest militaries.
@@adamgriffin8197 considering this was in 1812, most of Canada wasn’t Canada, but British territory, granted USA wasn’t as powerful as the royal army in general, but considering their army locally was bigger thier was no excuse for them to have not won other then defence is general has a better chance due to not really mobilizing.
The eu/British military would have taken a bit to cross the sea to reach Canada and I’m sure the number of people in Canada was small at the time due to the country belonging to a overseas government/leader/the royal/whatever you want to call it.
Always love your videos, very informative.
A little correction on the dried fish part at 3:15 the fish that you took with you was haddok (ýsa) :)

Really great content, thanks for going to these interesting places for the wonderful stories!
Learned a lot from you Johnny !! Be safe!
Good stuff.
At home we eat cod weekly (I live in Catalonia).
We eat it raw and salted, with red pepper and olives.
Its awesome, buttery and very tasty.
And we eat it cold, so its very refreshing in summer.
Here its called “Bacalla esqueixat”.
...And it comes from Iceland.
So i can understand that they are very proctective of their fish,
it must be a very important part of their economy!
Great stuff, Johnny. I love your videos and I always learn loads from them
Think you had more fun filming that than I had watching it. Well played sir

UK not England, there were more Scottish vessels than English and Scottish vessels make up 64% of UK vessels today.
Johnny Harris - I am totally crazy about your videos. Keep posting them. Thanks.
The fact that I've only just been made aware about this now (by an American at that) after having lived in England my whole life is... concerning? Idk
It’s not concerning at all, to be honest these “wars” are pretty much just some cool facts, it doesn’t really affect Britain anymore
It's not the story the cod jedi would tell you
I'm Hull, East Yorkshire. and it's linked to the decimation of our fishing industry.... Plunging the City into decline. Lots of people aged 50+ remember it very well.
