Drug lord Pablo Escobar smuggled four hippos into his own personal zoo during the 1980’s. But wild hippos are usually only native to Africa and their escape after Escobar’s death has left Colombia with an unexpected problem. Due to reproduction, there are now dozens roaming around one of the country’s rivers.
This episode looks at how the presence of these hippos affects Colombia’s biodiversity and how people became fond of their presence.

But on land, maybe not. But they are unpredictable and I guess this is what makes hippos more dangerous.
In my country, hippos have designated territory, most of them are in game parks away from human settlements.
You want to see hippos, you do it with a guide through the game park. One that is trained to keep you safe.
Simply put, hippos don't coexist in the same territory with humans!

The point is that hippos do not belong here and invasive species can be terrible for a native animal population, take for example the stone toads. They caused the population of the green- gold poison dart frogs to drop to near extinct, thier population was in the single digits and that caused the predators that were killed by these frogs to run rampant and destroy the native flora and fauna. It's only a matter of time. I recommend reading up on invasive species or watching videos, cos just cos there's more of an animal, it isn't a good thing.
The whole point is that hippos can spread unchecked, any animal with no natural competition is dangerous to the ecosystem. Even species out of place can cause a massive ripple effect.

Large animals, unless you get a nice clean shot into a vital area or eyes, will not stop them. Even if they eventually bleed out, unless you hit through the eyes instantly that hippo will keep charging, until it kills you. Then it might die.

This story is even more interesting when you know that most of those animals were brought to Colombia with the help form the colombian Air Force in their C130’s in the 80’s, there was a time when authorities didn’t know, or didn’t want to know that Pablo Escobar was that dangerous and helped him with a lot of them. The even arrived through the most important Air Force base of the COLOMBIAN Air Force, imagine smuggling animals and things through Nellis Air Force base in USA.
i wonder how the hippos would change over the years. i mean it would take a ton of years but i wonder how different they'll be from the ones in Africa

That was in the 80's - mid 90's. Colombia has changed a lot since then, specially Medellín, the city where Pablo Escobar lived. I'm not saying there's absolutely no crimes now, there are like in many other countries, but not like that era.

That's what I'm waiting for.
The lakes are in a themed park, it’s in the middle of nowhere and you have to pay to get in. It’s not likely to happen like that; when they get out they go to small towns or fincas that are around.
So far, 25 years have passed since Escobar died, and the hippos have not killed anyone yet.
@@amelianywhere Yes, but when you introduce an invasive species it completely transforms/destroys the local ecosystem. Certain species are likely to be eradicated in that area because they can't compete with the hippos. It's a terrible idea to allow them to stay.
With a federal judge making it legit illegal to hunt them down, it's going to take a lot of dead kids to overturn that.
If they ever have to come up with a new scientific name for American hippos, I vote for "Hippopotamus escobaris."

Despite your sarcasm, giving animals chemical contraception is a strategy used to control populations. For hippos, unfortunately, it would be close to impossible. It is usually done by injecting the females with hormones. Their skin and subcutaneous fat is too thick for this. Oral versions are difficult to monitor, and to make sure an individual gets a proper dose.
