    Hey everyone: this dispatch video is part of the Vox Borders project. I'm visiting six places around the world to investigate the human impact of borders, and those six videos will be released in fall 2017. In the meantime I'm making these vlog style shorts.
    If you want to follow my travels, the best way to do it is following my FB page: facebook.com/johnnyharrisvox
    and signing up for the newsletter at www.vox.com/borders-email. I'll be asking for video ideas, feedback on the project, and answering questions as it unfolds.

      I am Chinese living in Australia. I just went back to China in Dec 16 for a visit. What surprised me was that, these days, even in China, there are lots of electric taxi and share bicycle everywhere in the City. However, on the other hand, Australia as a developed county, has non of these. Whats more, government keeps pushing up public transit cost, giving less incentive for people to use these public transportation. Shame

    • @burtlangoustine1
      @burtlangoustine1 7 лет назад +8

      maxhng - Ihave to ask, being that you're from China, Is your comment State Sponsored? Are the Australian transport costs as much of a bad joke as say, State Intervention control and suppression of Chinese local elections? Enjoy your big family in Oz, perhaps you're the person to solve the transport costs, you'll find a willing and open government to help you with any questions. Good Luck

    • @maxhng
      @maxhng 7 лет назад +14

      burtlangoustine1 I wish my comment is state sponsored. I have to agree with you that suppression of freedom of speech in China is bad. However saying so that is entirely another issue. I have not been back to China for six years. It has really changed and to be better. That's why more and more overseas Chinese is moving back to the country. You have to be open minded and don't stick with old Chinese stereotypes. Plus, should a progressive country like Australia contribute to a better future for mankind and environmental friendliness? To your big Chinese family comment, I am the only one who is in Australia as Australian government would like me to pay crazy amounts of money for them to immigrate to Australia. If I do not pay up, the waiting list is more than 20 years.

      Hahaha indeed, if the Dutch government had put all the money from the selling of their natural gas in a fund (like Norway did), the yearly interest on such a fund would be larger than the current revenue of the gas fields. Actually Norway doesn't use the fund itself (or at least not to a great extend) but rather uses the interest generated by the fund to subsidise these projects.

    On this day Norway is exporting their carbon footprint to fund their (actually very expensive) green conversion. When other countries finally catches up and the oil sales wanes the Norwegian green infrastructure will be already in place, and now they license out their technology to fund an even greener conversion. Smart move really.

      Instead of spending our oil money directly, we put all the profits into a state run fund called "Statens pensjonsfond utland". We have a rule where we are allowed to withdraw 4% of the profits of this fund every year to spend on infrastructure. The reason for the 4% rule is to avoid inflation and keep the market stable.

No matter where you are in Norway, you can just walk 1 kilometers in any direction, and you're in some small forest, park or hill, we probably have the largest amount of national parks as well relative to a country's total landmass.
    The political debates are exaggerated and petty, because everyone knows there aren't any real problems, all the parties basically say the same things framed differently and get along with each other like friends, even if the are "supposed" to being in opposition.

      @RedTriangle53 7 лет назад +4

      As with any country there are political forces at play. On one side we are proud of trying to take care of our environment and pulling our weight, and on the other side most of the government here consists of economically conservative bureaucrats that are having a very hard time getting themselves to support other industries that will one day replace our dependence on oil income. One thing is clear: we can't suddenly stop selling oil. Economic conservatism is very good at building infrastructure that is expensive and requires little thought, and without having an income to support that infrastructure we will be set back 50 years. So we do intend to phase out oil, hopefully, and we do realize the irony. But things take time. We had our clean energy before we struck oil.
      I think most people here are relieved that oil is starting to become useless just by the advancement of technology and market forces, since that means we'll eventually have no choice but to adapt to it, which will force our politicians to actually act. All in all it boils down to: good people, bad corporations and politicians.

    Maybe after a point: electric cars will be so deeply-rooted into Norwegian culture & by that time, even if none of these incentives can be provided by the government, Norway will remain green.
    Solely due to the people being used to them & because a Tesla on its own provides incentives as well.

      Free fuel should also help - or even if they decide to charge, electricity produced by hydropower is pretty darn cheap. As the cars get more common, their price will drop too, without any subsidies. Plus you will be more easily able to find them sold used.

    • @SIeipner
      @SIeipner 7 лет назад +7

      That has always been the plant. To gradually reduce the benefits over time. They have already started that! They just use these incentives to kick start the electric car sales. Once Electric cars in general becomes cheaper (especially batteries, or better battery technology) The incentives will go away!

      Yeah, I'm also for things like biogas septic systems and more walkable cities to REDUCE the use of cars, encouraging people to buy localy grown food so that food doesn't have to be transported so far, passive housing to reduce unnecessary energy waste, among many, many other things. I don't beleive there is a single soloution to "climate change", I think the entire way we think about where energy comes from and how we use it has to change.
      But that's not to say that we will never figure out how to make electric vechles efficient enough to make a significant impact...
      Specifically, I'm not saying Norway has found the golden bandaid to "green energy", there is still a phenomenal amount of work to be done. I'm just saying they're way ahead of the game and at least they're making an effort.

    In Norway there is this island called Finnøy located in Stavanger. This island is the place in the world with the highest amount of electric cars per citizen. The reason being to get to the island, you need to drive through an underwater tunnel. In the end of the tunnel there is a toll station which is super expensive (about 15$). But with an electric car, you don't need to pay this fee. Therefore almost everyone who lives on this island has sold their car for an electric car.

      ProGal is right. Resource costs vary by region. If you have a lot of trees, wood is cheaper. In Korea, where they are constantly building tunnels through granite mountains, you can find granite everywhere. Curbs are covered in granite tiles on many streets. The sides of many buildings are covered with granite tiles. Huge granite stones and statues are often used as decorations. Where I grew up, granite is very expensive. It is more abundant in Korea.

    • @gullfeber
      @gullfeber 7 лет назад +22

      wrong, the wooden floors at the airport did not originate from the norwegian forests, but from eastern europe. very high quality put together by a company in denmark so you know its a fancy design. quite expensive at that. a floor made out of concrete would be cheaper, but we can afford it so why the hell not.

      They want to stop all crude oil production today with no plans to replace our main source of income and the jobs it provides.
      They want to ban the sales of all non-electric cars today
      They want to prevent big trucks from driving into the big cities, and have the cago transported by bikes into the cities.

      AlfBiology no, Tyler got it right. He spoke about more than one video. 'videos are great' is correct. "The quality of his videos is great!!" Would be wrong. S H A M E O N Y O U A L F

    • @christineluo493
      @christineluo493 7 лет назад +5

      If we really want to get technical and nitpicky, AlfBiology is correct because the simplified sentence would be "the quality is great," since "of his videos" is just making the sentence more specific. Quality is singular, so you would use "is."

    • @ToOoOoRd
      @ToOoOoRd 7 лет назад +4

      The videos are great, but i can say as a Norwegian that a lot of his facts in this video are wrong. Which may indicate that a lot of the other videos also have this.
      The Tesla model S can drive 0-100 km/h in 2,7 seconds not 3,1.
      We do not get tax deductions on our income tax by owning electric cars, we get tax exemptions on the purchase of electric cars.
      And these "subsidies" are not funded by the sovereign wealth fund.

    • @MrPerlew
      @MrPerlew 7 лет назад

      Christine Luo By your logic one can say that both are right and both are wrong. "quality" is singular, but the rest of the sentnce is not singular.
      Really it comes down to the one interpeting the sentence. But as a final point I would like to make: The "quality" in the sentence is singular and then its followed by "videos" which isn't singular.
      And I would still argue that one should use the format of the lastly decided quality of said sentence when deciding to continue a confliting sentence.
      Aka, if the last noun which is being described by the sentence is singular or not singular, the sentence should remain as that depending on which it is.
      But I might be wrong, whatever, good day.

    In Norway, the tax on everything is really high, but normal cars have a tax almost as much as the original price of the car. (Essentially, you pay the price for the car two times)
    The electric cars, don't have as high of a tax, and end up ALL over the place, due to the way lower tax.

    Norwegian government seems to be the smartest onу among other countries' governments. It really works to make sure peoples' life being better and prosperious. In terms of strategic thinking Norway has surpassed other developed countries like USA. Mainly, this achievement is due to well-considered policy in different areas from environment protection to elaborate distribution of financial incomes. It won't be a lie to say that Norway is the most advanced country when it comes to utilization of green technologies. By making its own country free of contaminations it much aids to the globe to become cleaner and people to live in the clean world.

      Norway's policy seems to be like a drug sellers, don't get high on your own supply. Norway has an advanced enough infrastructure to make electric cars that run on green energy, it would be a waste to spend that infrastructure on producing better oil refineries, and definitely more harmful and unsustainable.
      Simply put investing money into green energy would cut the cycle. Meanwhile a lot of places in the world need oil and gas, simply because their infrastructure isn't developed enough. I'm not sure where else you expect to get that much cash from. After all they can only sell oil as long as they have oil to sell.

    For a while now the Norwegian goverment has stared to export alot of our waterfall electicity to the European market, combined with less rain water and increased gas prices the wast majority of Norwegians except from in the north now pay a high price for electricity, and its not longer that much incentive to have Teslas as before.
