Exactly. I can see the arms on benches being used, but people need a place to sit & rest. I have an old hip replacement & my other hip is getting arthritis after walking awhile & sitting for at least 5 - 10 minutes helps to get me moving again. And I'm sure alot of other people who can still get around, yet have physical issues, need benches to rest as well.
my city put these leaning bars in the subway, but it was made out of smooth aluminium, so you kept slipping off and it took more effort to stay on it than just to stand or lean against an actual wall. there was a public outcry until they finally flattened the top and installed it as a normal bench.
The subway in my country now has it too and I hate it. It's so uncomfortable for everyone and short people can't even get there, I have to stand anyway because I don't reach it correctly and makes my back hurt!

That does prevent the people the benches were intended to help, like the elderly, from making use of them. And unfortunately tends to also lead to urinating and defecating around them.

Pragmatism is usually codeword for "let's not try to fix a systemic issue because we don't want to mess with the system". What you ignore is that the video says that homeless rates are going down. Attacking the problem from both sides by helping people get out of homelessness and discouraging people from being homeless (it's common among a lot of welfare takers)who interfere with public property, taking property meant to be given to everyone as something they "own," is important. So rather than complaining about a "mean" environment, you can help the quicken the declining homeless rate already in place. Again, how will you help the homeless problem by being against the deterring structures?
That leaning bar only works for people of a specific height range. If you’re very tall or very short it’ll be uncomfortable. Also it’s barely better than leaning on a wall in the first place

Because this country is lacking true Christianity. Christ helped the needy. And here we do everything to not help and deny them, looking at them with disdain and selfishness. If we would stop making things political, and would look up to our Redeemer, Christ, who died for us and calls for us to also be self-sacrificing and selfless to others, this country would be much happier and lacking issues.

And I don't know where you live, but I live in a rural area with many homeless people and no hare Krishna soup kitchens and no Hindu temples for at least a hundred miles.

As a disabled person I can say that public spaces really aren't that accessible, it's very difficult to navigate the world now I am disabled and it gives me a lot of anxiety
Dear Alexander Hansen my sister was disabled and we constantly struggled to find accessible places, especially when we went on holiday. We got a small wheelchair accessible car which was good in car packs but we still found ourselves in a pickle a lot of the time.

@@AceofHearth For most people it really is a simple as going to the shelter and following their rules while you apply for a job. Lots of people give jobs to people trying to get off the street but only the ones that want to get off the street.
NYC already has a problem with allowing people in wheel chairs from using the subway. Now they want to make it harder for people with canes or asthma? Sometimes people literally just need to sit down to keep from falling down. I'm sure veterans with leg injuries are thrilled with the leaning bar.

To be fair to New York, they actually have to make everything so costly because so many people want to go to New York. If they lowered the price to live there, the city would be far too overpopulated. My ex step dad's mom kicked him out of the house when he turned 18 to show him what it was like to struggle by himself and not rely on others for shelter and income and he lived on the streets homeless for a while. While he was homeless he said he met a lot of intelligent and interesting people. A majority of whom were addicts of some kind. While others were considered outcasts in society or some who grew tired of living in society and following its norms. I remember one story where he told me that he met a surgeon who gave up his profession because he grew tired of taking part in societies monetary values and materials so decided to become homeless and was happier with the simple lifestyle. While others were like him - kicked out of the house at a young age and had been homeless from a younger age never really getting back into the swing of things. He eventually went back to his moms and took up a trade in mechanics. He is one of the most hard working people I know to this day.
If most of those homeless are on the street out of their own volition, then how can the govt help them? A surgeon in on the street just as non-conforming member of the societ, then what can be said?

Guess what, some people in the states buy the homeless a one way ticket to Hawaii so they won't suffer the extreme climates and can survive more comfortably outdoors here. It's ridiculous and homelessness in Hawaii is a massive epidemic now. Not to mention the cost of living is outrageous here and that's taking a toll on locals and making them homeless here too. It is a shame, how Urban planning, a discipline that affects all of our lives, is often so forgotten. Which is why I am so thankful, that Vox regularly showcases the best and the worst of it, as is with many other issues to do with modern life.
As a planner, I believed that the city belongs to everyone. After facilitating the siting of some homeless shelters, I learned that it is the neighbours who adamantly don't want them around. It was the politics of the squeaky wheel. We sometimes ended up putting them in industrial districts. This was not ideal for the homeless.
As a disabled person, I NEED places to sit when I go out. It is already difficult enough to go outside while having to spend so much of my mental energy planning out where I can retreat to to take a rest when I need it.
It's more comfortable than the wall because it provides more support (but the more you lean on it the more uncomfortable it gets). We have them in metro system in Melbourne. They're just enough to give you a rest while you wait for the train. But platforms here also have a mix of benches and leaning bars.
I use to be homeless and these bars did prevent me from sleeping. Its a sad world we live in but if you try to kill yourself and end up in the hospital they ask why you did it and tell you you have more to live for. Easier said then done.
Even better when you're homeless, attempt suicide, and then get saddled with tens of thousands of hospital bills if you fail. Y'know, cuz I already had *tons* of money before. Certainly not pushing me to try again or anything.
I’d rather have the uncomfortable benches then dirty homeless people laying on them. If you really need a place to sleep, don’t choose the public. Friends or homeless shelters are always options.

My disabilities means that my joints get sore if I'm standing for too long. It means that I get tired easily. So errands are already pretty difficult for me, just because of the having to be up and walking for so long. Without proper benches I can take a break on if I need it.... I'd be even _more_ stuck at home. It's bad enough on rainy days, because all of the benches are soaked, making them unusable. Honestly that leaning bar is ridiculous. Wtf is the point of that?? People can already lean on the wall if they want to!! Also like... it assumes everyone is a certain height. What about short people? What about tall people?? It removes wall leaning space from them while being unusable for them because they can't reach it or they'd have to bend down awkwardly in a position that's more of a work out than a rest. What a waste of money.
Additionally the amount of designs that are made for the average/larger sized male making a large portion of the population unable to properly use said designs. (Eg. I am a smallish woman and there is those godawful leaning bars at my bus stop so when it is busy and i have to line up for the bus i am forced to use it except for that it presses directly into my back, or parking in a parking complex and having to press the button to receive the parking ticket and i cannot reach out of my car window bc of my shortish arms). the amount of people they make uncomfortable (disabled, old, pregnant or just plain tired or a tiny bit sick) with large amounts of money and creativity should go into looking after the homeless and making skate parks or whatever. Calm down and let people live and provide a seat!!!
I understand your pain....I have something similar. Sometimes public space are so crowded, sitting space is not available. I just get used to carry a small foldable chair to sit when needed. At work site I even got my own foldable deck chair for short naps during break hour. In the end public space is just a convenience that is never enough for others....we just have to make ourselves comfortable. Imagine sitting on a deck chair leaning back and chill out while waiting for the intercity train....I even plan to buy a wheelchair with a motor engine and use walking stick when I'm retired. Not disabled but when you are old, walking stick and wheelchair makes shopping really fun and very comfortable. Hey not abusing people kindness....I have onset of early arthritis. Comfort will make me stay healthy till my old age. Sort of a way to prevent disability. Is that a crime?

For people in the boroughs it usually means two hours of traveling to get to manhattan and back again. For the elderly and disabled this is really, really difficult without a place to sit. Also, poorer people don't have as many resources in their neighborhoods so carry more bags with them. This harms a lot of people.

I don't have a problem with uncomfortable benches. Why would you spend more money on benches and seats instead of improving homeless shelters, where there are real beds, bathrooms, food, and shelter? Give the homeless a proper home and for everyone else a seat meant for temporary sitting.
Many homeless don't want to stay in the shelters. Where I live they cleared out a homeless encampment. They interviewed the homeless as this was happening, and one of the homeless guys was asked why he couldn't go to a shelter. He said I have to be in by a certain time in the evening, up by a certain time in the morning, have to make my bed, etc. in the shelters. Like the rest of us don't have schedules set by others to stay in home and food. He said I'll take an apartment instead. Geez. That's big of him to take an apartment on our dime.
The "more" money spent is literally on a 5 dollar bar. It also reduces cost of a bench to just half a bench. More than a quarter of the military budget is spent on veterans, a of whom are homeless, and more tax revenue in cities is spent on shelters and homeless programs than hostile architecture. This effect is shown in the declining homeless rate. Most of the homeless left right now are either ones that are lazy or have some mental disability. We should focus on programs to help the mentally disabled instead of giving free apartments (thanks Anon) to the lazy
Anon54387 instead of calling them ungrateful, we should using to solve the problem not very irritated that they don't like the scraps we're presenting. Just because you give someone a helping hand doesn't mean you should be able to run their lives. They're still people, and people and autonomy over their lives, period.
Taking away these spaces from homeless people doesn't make them magically disappear, it forces them to sleep in less safe places, on actual public transport, etc. It takes away the barest minimum of decency and comfort these people could have. All it does is worsen their living conditions and facilitate their illness and death. You cannot present this as a practical solution without acknowledging the horrible implications for real people's lives. In the meantime, while we're still on our way to humane solutions to the problem of homelessness (as we should be), we should at the very least do our best not to make their lives more miserable. With every new thing that is introduced to keep homeless people out of public spaces, there should always be an alternate temporary solution that at least will provide a viable alternative to what they were just stripped of.
It's actually a really dumb thing to think that people always want all those people on all the public spaces, you know, even if it may sound selfish, I personally don't want those people disturbing, begging, committing crime (not all of them) on public spaces, they damage them, they use them as toilets, they sometimes make disorder, you know, we all pay taxes for all those shelters, they should use them! they may not be as comfortable as living without being disturbed while you're taking a nap in the middle of the subway, cause you have to obey some rules and have to sign up frequently, but, sincerely, we do have to obey even more complex rules in our homes. Benches are used to seat, not to sleep, railings are used to keep balance while you're using stairs, they're not meant to be used to skateboard, even the walkways, are used to walk, not to sleep. I know world is a cruel place for homeless people, but they have a lot of facilities to get out of their situation, and I guarantee you, all those people that sleep on the street are not trying to solve their problems as people that's really homeless are, cause there's a key difference between both, the ones using the shelters, are trying to solve their situation.

I have a mild form a cerebral palsy (among the various learning disabilities and one eye problem) and those “benches” or “leaning bars” are a nightmare. Haven’t they thought about people with disabilities. It’s already hard to walk (Though fortunately I don’t need crutches or a walker).
Armchair in the U.K. a lot of rich people use trains actually, it’s seen as the best way to travel in London, it’s a lot easier also. You see many rich or business types on trains.
They could do it like parking and such. Have a few benches for the disabled and the rest could be leaning bars. Having only leaning bars isn't smart at all.
I think you forgot the part of the video where it said that the homeless population is declining. That means thousands of homeless are being given jobs every year. So yeah, actually most of the remaining homeless are actually the problem. Many of them are mentally disabled or just truly lazy. For the mentally disabled, it's really hard to help them (except some new technologies now like TMS emitters or medicine.) Over time, they will develop and hopefully reduce mental disorders. But I'm not spending tax-money on giving a bum a free chair that's meant to be used by everyone, not just that person.

Radi Bear sadly that just isn't true: it's not actually not that hard to help mentally disabled people, it just costs more many than the government wants to allocate toward that particular issue because 1 they're own pockets always come first and 2 there's a good chance they're fearful that if more people are given a greater chance to succeed and prosper, those in charge could be less likely to keep their position of power but I digress...People who work in those types of facilities are very often incredibly over-worked as the facility is under staffed with a constant overflow of the ratio for patients to employees, they're also not getting paid very much and often times with certain issues a patient may need assistance with they they may even be untrained in, their hands tied by bureaucracy to the point where there isn't even much they can do in those cases, so they become jaded and despondent with their jobs and that lack of motivation leads them to not only treat the mentally ill people who depend on them for their lives to function, are treating them as a number and nothing more, many times snapping at them and talking down to them when they already have very fragile psyche and self esteem, thus leading to many mentally ill people being discouraged from reaching out for help in fear of being ridiculed. It's a very real and very heartbreaking thing. I challenge anyone to spend significant time in a government funded mental health facility behind the scenes, specifically a clinic specializing in the "seriously/severely mentally ill" and watch closely how the interactions that the employees paid by the government affect the people on the receiving end, who might I mention, have all had a 2+ hour interview detailing their entire emotional and medical history where they're evaluated by a trained professional to determine that they're struggling with a level of mental illness that exceeds what the "average" person is typically able to balance with therapy, religion, positive thoughts, daily exercise, yoga, healthy diet, a planner, etc (Thanks for reading💕)
I don’t get why urban planning isn’t planning for the people who live in the space - if homeless people are a problem, why not design a space for them to go - shelters are, as vox states, not always a viable solution - why not make multiple solutions that don’t interfere with other things... like set aside a small section of a park for a shelter with cubicles that are usable at night only... it boggles the mind that a problem that is so big in the scope of things only gets tackled by trying to prevent the people it involves from using a public space.... why not make it a priority to get the homeless somewhere to go - somewhere where they are not in the way.... we always see alleys with cardboard homes in the movies - if that’s a true representation, then why not make some movable shelters that are big enough to sleep in, for one or two people ( some people have dogs too)... it could be metal, plastic or even fiberglass - if they are a permanent fixture and out of the way, then it would solve a lot of issues... maybe it would create others, but that’s for others to puzzle out - I just think it would be better for homeless people to have a space to go, where they are welcome and on their own terms...
In New York, you have to PROVE that you have no where to live. They would not just take you in. Also, you have to be on some type of gov. program like Welfare. The shelter even takes money from the welfare and you actually get less money from that too. And in New York you have to work for Welfare. They don't just hand you a check. Some people are on disability and the shelter takes it's share of your check on that too. Sure they feed you, but the food is similar to Alpo. Sure, they give you a bed (uncomfortable), sure they give you a shower, it is gross and no shower curtains and people can watch you bathe. Also, there is only a certain amount of times that you can apply for shelter. By the way I was HOMELESS in New York. And I could see why people actually live in the street. Sometimes it really is not by choice.

givememore4free -givememore4free - if you took the time to read my comment to the end instead of just writing of the top of your head you might see the following - I suggested places OUTSIDE of shelters especially for those for whom shelters are not an option... if a space was made available by night only and was closed off from dawn to dusk - then yeah, some would make it a ‘home’ but if we are talking about a cubicle that’s about 2x2 meters and maybe 1m high - and make it into ‘bunk bed’ type spaces with 3 high on each side of a walkway - then they would have a space to keep their things safe in that timeframe... that way they might be able to get a job... just might... And my movable box idea was actually NOT cardboard - I suggested metal, plastic or fiberglass for that.... my point was the same as the dedicated space, but just flexible in the way that they could be set up or moved to more appropriate locations... I do know homelessness is not a choice - throughout my adult life I have had multiple friends living with me for a time because they had no other choice!! Unlike you, I WAS HOMELESS and I live in New York. Your "SOLUTION" is not a good option. Parks ARE CLOSED AFTER DARK in New York. Making a cubical space for "temporary shelter" is a bad idea because it would just make it PERMANENT for homeless and they will set up their lives in that area. We could bash out the same BAD IDEAS that you came out with all day but at the end of the day you don't know that much. BYE FELICIA. So, easy to come up with solutions when you never have been homeless and most likely are now enjoying a Starbucks coffee while typing your comments.
I live in Rome and the introduction of these benches has been slow, but the few that have been replaced with these are a nightmare. Public transport here entails such long wait times, so now I have to wait half an hour for the train while on my feet before waiting another eternity for the bus, where there never were any benches to begin with. In my experience there was never a big problem here with homeless people sleeping on these benches during actual business hours, they used them mainly when no one else was around to need them. Now they are forced to sleep on the floor. Doesn't make the city safer and definitely does not solve the homeless problem.
In Poland, in the front of every grocery store is a brench which is olways full of hobos, usually they are pretty nice and you can hire them for small help.
I personally don't like for example that we have spikes in front many of London's shop fronts, in alcoves, side streets and even in some shared spaces such as parks. It's so easy to blame urban planners and governing authorities for these hostile constructions it's been shown that it's a select few people that don't like the homeless and are deterred from entering particular shops, and using certain public spaces such as parks. More importantly it's those involved in the private sector like store-owners etc. that generally feel that their businesses will be negatively affected by the presence of homeless people surrounding the area. It's the negative, hostile attitudes of the general public and private sector towards the homeless which puts pressure on city planners to increase anti-comfort infrastructure and it's our job to slowly try and amend these attitudes.
When town planners put spike outside of one british shopping mall, the public said it was barbaric and disgusting. So it's not necessarily the public that is the source of this movement. It's gentrification fetishists and the political circles who believe that they can just make the destitute and impoverished magically disappear by punishing them for existing.
Why does it sicken you? These areas that are getting spikes on them were not designed or intended to be slept on by homeless people. As a NYC resident, I am a strong advocate of government officials deterring homeless people through any means possible, even if a few people find it barbaric. When I walk the streets at night, I'd rather there wasn't a homeless man on every bench begging me for money. The amount that I am asked for money in this city is outrageous and it needs to come to an end since homelessness here is growing so rapidly.
Are we working on rehabilitation centers? Not just shelters, but places that reacclimate individuals into working society? Perhaps moving from the shelter to a vocational rehab with assisted living. You would be in a type of partial program where you were in patient and paid partial towards rent while going through vocational rehab. During the training, you would have lessons on domestic violence, budgeting, gambling, pest and critter control, and economic emergencies or job loss as well as trauma, sickness and other causes of homelessness and how to cope against them. It's not ideal and not everyone would be for it, but it's a start, and more people would benefit from transitioning back into society than just going back and forth between the shelter, a food bank, and the streets. People want to feel like people. They want to feel safe and be respected. I'm disabled from a car accident, and before getting hit by a car, I never thought twice about these things even though I was in school to be a teacher. Now, I truly understand the need for a societal shift.
i kegel I've never been on welfare, so I don't exactly understand how the system is set up, so perhaps someone could educate me on that. I was always under the impression that you could be on welfare for a fixed amount of time that could last indefinitely based on your needs. I was not informed, however, that welfare was a vigorous program that targeted the cause of different scenarios and worked to reverse those habits. For example, someone homeless because their house burned down would have different traumatic experiences and issues with finding housing than someone who wasn't responsible with bills. And not everyone who qualifies for these programs want help based on various reasons. Some being lazy, some being treated as less than human, some being mentally unstable, some not willing to put up with the conditions, or even trying to hustle the system. There are so many variables. What I had in mind was not just a pacifier, which is how certain people see rehabilitation programs, but as a tool of redirection. It is true, I haven't looked up welfare programs because I personally haven't been in need of them. I have been blessed that despite getting hit by a car and being disabled, that I had things set in place in case of an emergency. However, I do not feel that those type of tools are exercised by everyone, and it isn't always due to incompetence, but by ignorance. By not knowing what you don't know.

When the same bad habits are repeated time and time again, you lose the urge to want to help and rightfully so. The problem is the power shift that contempt creates. When you no longer care about the well-being of those you are trying to assist, you get people in nursing homes being abused by caretakers, people with addictions being seen as filthy animals, and people on the street being stepped on and mistreated. It's frustrating because not everyone is genuine, but I don't feel our current system truly addresses those who need help. It is a complicated issue with many layers and scenarios, and the way we're approaching the solution doesn't seem to be working so far. This is just my opinion, and I could very well be wrong, but I've seen people who genuinely work hard not receive the benefits they deserve just as I've seen people cheat the system.
Or maybe we shouldn't be trying to transition people back to society - maybe they need a kinder, less harsh society. Maybe (some) people need a different environment. Think about all the tribes that didn't have a modern version of work before Europeans showed up (in the Americas, Africa, Australia, or NZ) or different countries or even cats that do nothing all day. Maybe we need alternatives for modern life so people can opt out or have different expectations.
I hope we fix this in the near future. These uncomfortable benches affect more than just the homeless population. It affects the elderly, people with disabilities and injuries, pregnant women..etc.
Yo, judging by how often I see homeless people still sleeping soundly even on the "uncomfortable" benches in NYC, architects are underestimating their perseverance, ingenuity, and their ability to defy gravity. I'd bet everything that I will eventually find a homeless person making those leaning bars work as a bed, and I also can't wait to see it.

@Vox, We have the same problem in germany. Some days ago my city received a shitstorm because the police gave an old man with dementia a ticket because he was sitting on a bench. The bench is at a bus station and officially only for customers of the bus company. The old man lives in that street and goes out for a walk every day. On his walk he needs to take a rest on the bench and sits there for a couple of minutes. The police have been watching him to see if he will take a bus. He didn't take any of course and so they gave him a ticket over 180€ for using the bench although we wasn't a customer of the bus company. After the shitstorm the police deleted the ticket, but that just shows the problem with benches etc. in public spaces. Almost every bench in my city is part of a bus or tram station, a café or some other place where you have to consume in order to use it. Benches in parks are like the only places where you can rest and sit for free...
Nowhere you can sit and just... be. If you're there you have to be buying something 24/7. I got some food from an Indian takeaway in one area and couldn't find a single bench to sit on whilst eating. Ended up sitting on the bus stop one.
I sometimes wonder if security cameras are sometimes decoys in many places to make it appear that we are being watched and deter people from hanging around certain areas for too long.
those "leaning bars" are quite irritating, we have them scattered around the UK. It's tough for people like my Grandma, who travel by train. She's got used to carrying around walking stick that turns into a stool, but it's not really ideal :/

Book of Stories, did you not hear? There aren't enough shelters for them, and it isn't easy to just get a job. You have to actually have the money to search for jobs, then you have to get ready ro interviews and stuff, and because you're homeless, they'll probably choose someone else over them. I'm sick of people who think it's as simple as a click of the fingers to get a job, sorry, but for some people it is incredibly hard.
Dang. As a person with anxiety, I always loved the divided benches (with the little metal arm rests in certain increments) because it feels less awkward for me to sit in my "own space" rather than gauge whether or not sitting next to another person already on the bench would be uncomfortable/too close/weird. My eyes have been opened and now I just feel bad that those benches exist.
Maybe a best of both worlds solution! I'd love to see benches that had big colorful stripes making up each seat rather than armrests--there's still a clear visual separation between the different seats, so it feels like you have your own spot, but it doesn't prevent a homeless person from stretching out.
It's interesting to know the thoughts people put into designing things like this. And I'd put it up there in terms of importance. Can we apply these principles of engendering discomfort in more abstract ways in people's lives? Can we design cities or spaces that can push people to think or act a certain way within them and achieve positive benefits from them, as opposed to just trying to stop a negative with these designs.
I used to do some urban backpacking across the U.S and some countries. I would often sleep on the ground because the benches had a bar in the middle. From what I have seen, these defensive tactics causes homeless individuals to relocate to concentrated areas such as parks.
It's making the places we live less liveable. Less friendly. Less inviting. And worst of all, less caring of those who need help the most. If homeless people are shunned from public places, that means they are out of sight, and out of mind, meaning less thought and public awareness towards assisting them. Pushing the "dirty under the rug" doesn't solve anything, it only makes us less empathetic.
Sounds fine to me. I don't want a government forcing people to be charitable and to a certain level. That is not the government's job. That is what a church or charity is for and nothing is stopping you from donating.

Also, making your city not hostile to homelessness isn't forcing anyone to be charitable. I'm not sure where you got that idea from. As I said earlier, if the homeless are forced out public areas, that means they're hidden from sight and mind from those who are capable of helping and offering empathy. It's a simple fact that awareness is the first step is solving social issues, and it's hard to be aware if the problems are hidden from the public.
it actualy makes it more friendly inviting and liveable. homeless covering your sidewalks and benches looks bad. they stink, they beg. some even steal. they arent bad people. but they are in a bad situation, that however does not excuse action and getting in the way. they hang around shopfronts reducing business and thus growth. they pester people for money.
@kor'vre , My idea is that if the problem was more visible, more people would try to solve it. That problem being homelessness. If it concerned enough people, or heck even bothered enough people they'd probably be more willing to find a solution. Hostile design is not a solution to the core issue. It's putting a bandage on an infected wound without treating it. The problem can only grow and fester if the problem is hidden from public awareness.
Like how there's armrests between every seat in an airport terminal. If I'm the only person in the terminal, and it's 4AM, and my flight leaves at 9, I would greatly appreciate somewhere to get an hour of sleep

As a homeless person (with a job, naturally), I can't say I'm impressed. Instead of finding ways to shelter the rising homeless population, "hostility" seems to describe the way that we're treated. As if feeling unwanted nearly everywhere I go isn't bad enough, life is expensive. Just to spend time in just about anywhere except the public library, I have to buy food in restaurants just so I can exist somewhere peacefully for a short time (plus I have nowhere to cook food for meals). I can't hang out in public (that's loitering) especially at night, and so just being homeless gets extraordinarily expensive, which is ironic and counter-intuitive. I don't understand why this measure would "reduce crime". While I can see the incentive to commit crime just to have a warm jail to sleep in at night, most homeless people would rather stay under the radar as life is already hard enough without a criminal record.
I was homeless, and I know how you feel. Most people don't know how hard it is to be in the shelter system or to live on the street. It is easy for them and will never get the struggle.
Contact the Coalition for the Homeless. It's free and they can set you up with case worker who will help. Coalitionforthehomeless.org. Also, serious health problems can develop in your legs if you are never able to lie down so do the best you can to get sideways when you sleep. Stay safe.
Jeff - everyone knows about that organization, but they can't help everyone. There are a lot of working people that just can't get into a shelter. They look at your financial assets at the time and a lot get turned down. There are also too many people in the shelter system right now and they can't house them all. They have X amount of beds and they are all being used. This is not an open and shut case. In some states they don't even have shelters and they are forced to live on the streets. People can't afford rent, especially in New York.
givememore4free I agree completely. I volunteer for them, they don't have a lot of resources, but it works. The important part with them is sticking with it. They get a lot of clients who come in once then miss appointments or stop showing up. When people stick with it they put their resources into getting those clients off the street permanently. It takes a while and it can be difficult if you live in the bronx or somewhere else far from the office, but it does work, and I hope it can for you.
@Jeff Goble I appreciate that, but I'm not a homeless "New Yorker"... I live in Bangor, Maine. We have 2 homeless shelters in this city, but they're always filled to capacity and overflowing (plus one of them doesn't even provide beds during the day, and my job is an overnight one). There are no deterrent designs in _our_ architecture, but the local casino finances the police and so we have quite a lot of them, and they'll rouse and move you no matter where you settle publicly.
It really says something about how we see the world that we're willing to spend more time and money taking care of prisoners because we're so "tough on crime" than we are on people who could actually have the opportunity to become productive members of society with a little support.

Exactly. I can see the arms on benches being used, but people need a place to sit & rest. I have an old hip replacement & my other hip is getting arthritis after walking awhile & sitting for at least 5 - 10 minutes helps to get me moving again. And I'm sure alot of other people who can still get around, yet have physical issues, need benches to rest as well.

my city put these leaning bars in the subway, but it was made out of smooth aluminium, so you kept slipping off and it took more effort to stay on it than just to stand or lean against an actual wall.

The subway in my country now has it too and I hate it. It's so uncomfortable for everyone and short people can't even get there, I have to stand anyway because I don't reach it correctly and makes my back hurt!

What you ignore is that the video says that homeless rates are going down.
Attacking the problem from both sides by helping people get out of homelessness and discouraging people from being homeless (it's common among a lot of welfare takers)who interfere with public property, taking property meant to be given to everyone as something they "own," is important.
So rather than complaining about a "mean" environment, you can help the quicken the declining homeless rate already in place. Again, how will you help the homeless problem by being against the deterring structures?

As a disabled person I can say that public spaces really aren't that accessible, it's very difficult to navigate the world now I am disabled and it gives me a lot of anxiety

Dear Alexander Hansen my sister was disabled and we constantly struggled to find accessible places, especially when we went on holiday. We got a small wheelchair accessible car which was good in car packs but we still found ourselves in a pickle a lot of the time.

My ex step dad's mom kicked him out of the house when he turned 18 to show him what it was like to struggle by himself and not rely on others for shelter and income and he lived on the streets homeless for a while. While he was homeless he said he met a lot of intelligent and interesting people. A majority of whom were addicts of some kind. While others were considered outcasts in society or some who grew tired of living in society and following its norms. I remember one story where he told me that he met a surgeon who gave up his profession because he grew tired of taking part in societies monetary values and materials so decided to become homeless and was happier with the simple lifestyle. While others were like him - kicked out of the house at a young age and had been homeless from a younger age never really getting back into the swing of things. He eventually went back to his moms and took up a trade in mechanics. He is one of the most hard working people I know to this day.

Guess what, some people in the states buy the homeless a one way ticket to Hawaii so they won't suffer the extreme climates and can survive more comfortably outdoors here. It's ridiculous and homelessness in Hawaii is a massive epidemic now. Not to mention the cost of living is outrageous here and that's taking a toll on locals and making them homeless here too. It's sad to see this increase in homelessness over the years.

It is a shame, how Urban planning, a discipline that affects all of our lives, is often so forgotten. Which is why I am so thankful, that Vox regularly showcases the best and the worst of it, as is with many other issues to do with modern life.

Good urban design should go unnoticed. It should be so easy and comfortable to use that it is largely ignored.
As a planner, I believed that the city belongs to everyone. After facilitating the siting of some homeless shelters, I learned that it is the neighbours who adamantly don't want them around. It was the politics of the squeaky wheel. We sometimes ended up putting them in industrial districts. This was not ideal for the homeless.

As a disabled person, I NEED places to sit when I go out. It is already difficult enough to go outside while having to spend so much of my mental energy planning out where I can retreat to to take a rest when I need it.

It's more comfortable than the wall because it provides more support (but the more you lean on it the more uncomfortable it gets). We have them in metro system in Melbourne. They're just enough to give you a rest while you wait for the train. But platforms here also have a mix of benches and leaning bars.

I use to be homeless and these bars did prevent me from sleeping. Its a sad world we live in but if you try to kill yourself and end up in the hospital they ask why you did it and tell you you have more to live for. Easier said then done.

My disabilities means that my joints get sore if I'm standing for too long. It means that I get tired easily. So errands are already pretty difficult for me, just because of the having to be up and walking for so long. Without proper benches I can take a break on if I need it.... I'd be even _more_ stuck at home. It's bad enough on rainy days, because all of the benches are soaked, making them unusable.
Honestly that leaning bar is ridiculous. Wtf is the point of that?? People can already lean on the wall if they want to!! Also like... it assumes everyone is a certain height. What about short people? What about tall people?? It removes wall leaning space from them while being unusable for them because they can't reach it or they'd have to bend down awkwardly in a position that's more of a work out than a rest. What a waste of money.

Additionally the amount of designs that are made for the average/larger sized male making a large portion of the population unable to properly use said designs. (Eg. I am a smallish woman and there is those godawful leaning bars at my bus stop so when it is busy and i have to line up for the bus i am forced to use it except for that it presses directly into my back, or parking in a parking complex and having to press the button to receive the parking ticket and i cannot reach out of my car window bc of my shortish arms). the amount of people they make uncomfortable (disabled, old, pregnant or just plain tired or a tiny bit sick) with large amounts of money and creativity should go into looking after the homeless and making skate parks or whatever. Calm down and let people live and provide a seat!!!

I understand your pain....I have something similar. Sometimes public space are so crowded, sitting space is not available. I just get used to carry a small foldable chair to sit when needed. At work site I even got my own foldable deck chair for short naps during break hour. In the end public space is just a convenience that is never enough for others....we just have to make ourselves comfortable.
Imagine sitting on a deck chair leaning back and chill out while waiting for the intercity train....I even plan to buy a wheelchair with a motor engine and use walking stick when I'm retired. Not disabled but when you are old, walking stick and wheelchair makes shopping really fun and very comfortable.

For people in the boroughs it usually means two hours of traveling to get to manhattan and back again. For the elderly and disabled this is really, really difficult without a place to sit. Also, poorer people don't have as many resources in their neighborhoods so carry more bags with them. This harms a lot of people.

I don't have a problem with uncomfortable benches. Why would you spend more money on benches and seats instead of improving homeless shelters, where there are real beds, bathrooms, food, and shelter? Give the homeless a proper home and for everyone else a seat meant for temporary sitting.
Many homeless don't want to stay in the shelters. Where I live they cleared out a homeless encampment. They interviewed the homeless as this was happening, and one of the homeless guys was asked why he couldn't go to a shelter. He said I have to be in by a certain time in the evening, up by a certain time in the morning, have to make my bed, etc. in the shelters. Like the rest of us don't have schedules set by others to stay in home and food. He said I'll take an apartment instead. Geez. That's big of him to take an apartment on our dime.

Taking away these spaces from homeless people doesn't make them magically disappear, it forces them to sleep in less safe places, on actual public transport, etc. It takes away the barest minimum of decency and comfort these people could have. All it does is worsen their living conditions and facilitate their illness and death. You cannot present this as a practical solution without acknowledging the horrible implications for real people's lives. In the meantime, while we're still on our way to humane solutions to the problem of homelessness (as we should be), we should at the very least do our best not to make their lives more miserable. With every new thing that is introduced to keep homeless people out of public spaces, there should always be an alternate temporary solution that at least will provide a viable alternative to what they were just stripped of.

It's actually a really dumb thing to think that people always want all those people on all the public spaces, you know, even if it may sound selfish, I personally don't want those people disturbing, begging, committing crime (not all of them) on public spaces, they damage them, they use them as toilets, they sometimes make disorder, you know, we all pay taxes for all those shelters, they should use them! they may not be as comfortable as living without being disturbed while you're taking a nap in the middle of the subway, cause you have to obey some rules and have to sign up frequently, but, sincerely, we do have to obey even more complex rules in our homes. Benches are used to seat, not to sleep, railings are used to keep balance while you're using stairs, they're not meant to be used to skateboard, even the walkways, are used to walk, not to sleep. I know world is a cruel place for homeless people, but they have a lot of facilities to get out of their situation, and I guarantee you, all those people that sleep on the street are not trying to solve their problems as people that's really homeless are, cause there's a key difference between both, the ones using the shelters, are trying to solve their situation.

I have a mild form a cerebral palsy (among the various learning disabilities and one eye problem) and those “benches” or “leaning bars” are a nightmare. Haven’t they thought about people with disabilities. It’s already hard to walk (Though fortunately I don’t need crutches or a walker).

I think you forgot the part of the video where it said that the homeless population is declining. That means thousands of homeless are being given jobs every year. So yeah, actually most of the remaining homeless are actually the problem. Many of them are mentally disabled or just truly lazy.
For the mentally disabled, it's really hard to help them (except some new technologies now like TMS emitters or medicine.) Over time, they will develop and hopefully reduce mental disorders. But I'm not spending tax-money on giving a bum a free chair that's meant to be used by everyone, not just that person.

Radi Bear sadly that just isn't true: it's not actually not that hard to help mentally disabled people, it just costs more many than the government wants to allocate toward that particular issue because 1 they're own pockets always come first and 2 there's a good chance they're fearful that if more people are given a greater chance to succeed and prosper, those in charge could be less likely to keep their position of power but I digress...People who work in those types of facilities are very often incredibly over-worked as the facility is under staffed with a constant overflow of the ratio for patients to employees, they're also not getting paid very much and often times with certain issues a patient may need assistance with they they may even be untrained in, their hands tied by bureaucracy to the point where there isn't even much they can do in those cases, so they become jaded and despondent with their jobs and that lack of motivation leads them to not only treat the mentally ill people who depend on them for their lives to function, are treating them as a number and nothing more, many times snapping at them and talking down to them when they already have very fragile psyche and self esteem, thus leading to many mentally ill people being discouraged from reaching out for help in fear of being ridiculed. It's a very real and very heartbreaking thing. I challenge anyone to spend significant time in a government funded mental health facility behind the scenes, specifically a clinic specializing in the "seriously/severely mentally ill" and watch closely how the interactions that the employees paid by the government affect the people on the receiving end, who might I mention, have all had a 2+ hour interview detailing their entire emotional and medical history where they're evaluated by a trained professional to determine that they're struggling with a level of mental illness that exceeds what the "average" person is typically able to balance with therapy, religion, positive thoughts, daily exercise, yoga, healthy diet, a planner, etc

I don’t get why urban planning isn’t planning for the people who live in the space - if homeless people are a problem, why not design a space for them to go - shelters are, as vox states, not always a viable solution - why not make multiple solutions that don’t interfere with other things... like set aside a small section of a park for a shelter with cubicles that are usable at night only... it boggles the mind that a problem that is so big in the scope of things only gets tackled by trying to prevent the people it involves from using a public space....
why not make it a priority to get the homeless somewhere to go - somewhere where they are not in the way....
we always see alleys with cardboard homes in the movies - if that’s a true representation, then why not make some movable shelters that are big enough to sleep in, for one or two people ( some people have dogs too)... it could be metal, plastic or even fiberglass - if they are a permanent fixture and out of the way, then it would solve a lot of issues...
maybe it would create others, but that’s for others to puzzle out - I just think it would be better for homeless people to have a space to go, where they are welcome and on their own terms...
In New York, you have to PROVE that you have no where to live. They would not just take you in. Also, you have to be on some type of gov. program like Welfare. The shelter even takes money from the welfare and you actually get less money from that too. And in New York you have to work for Welfare. They don't just hand you a check. Some people are on disability and the shelter takes it's share of your check on that too. Sure they feed you, but the food is similar to Alpo. Sure, they give you a bed (uncomfortable), sure they give you a shower, it is gross and no shower curtains and people can watch you bathe. Also, there is only a certain amount of times that you can apply for shelter. By the way I was HOMELESS in New York. And I could see why people actually live in the street. Sometimes it really is not by choice.

if a space was made available by night only and was closed off from dawn to dusk - then yeah, some would make it a ‘home’ but if we are talking about a cubicle that’s about 2x2 meters and maybe 1m high - and make it into ‘bunk bed’ type spaces with 3 high on each side of a walkway - then they would have a space to keep their things safe in that timeframe... that way they might be able to get a job... just might...

I do know homelessness is not a choice - throughout my adult life I have had multiple friends living with me for a time because they had no other choice!!

Unlike you, I WAS HOMELESS and I live in New York. Your "SOLUTION" is not a good option. Parks ARE CLOSED AFTER DARK in New York. Making a cubical space for "temporary shelter" is a bad idea because it would just make it PERMANENT for homeless and they will set up their lives in that area. We could bash out the same BAD IDEAS that you came out with all day but at the end of the day you don't know that much. BYE FELICIA. So, easy to come up with solutions when you never have been homeless and most likely are now enjoying a Starbucks coffee while typing your comments.
I live in Rome and the introduction of these benches has been slow, but the few that have been replaced with these are a nightmare. Public transport here entails such long wait times, so now I have to wait half an hour for the train while on my feet before waiting another eternity for the bus, where there never were any benches to begin with. In my experience there was never a big problem here with homeless people sleeping on these benches during actual business hours, they used them mainly when no one else was around to need them. Now they are forced to sleep on the floor. Doesn't make the city safer and definitely does not solve the homeless problem.

I personally don't like for example that we have spikes in front many of London's shop fronts, in alcoves, side streets and even in some shared spaces such as parks. It's so easy to blame urban planners and governing authorities for these hostile constructions it's been shown that it's a select few people that don't like the homeless and are deterred from entering particular shops, and using certain public spaces such as parks. More importantly it's those involved in the private sector like store-owners etc. that generally feel that their businesses will be negatively affected by the presence of homeless people surrounding the area. It's the negative, hostile attitudes of the general public and private sector towards the homeless which puts pressure on city planners to increase anti-comfort infrastructure and it's our job to slowly try and amend these attitudes.
When town planners put spike outside of one british shopping mall, the public said it was barbaric and disgusting.
So it's not necessarily the public that is the source of this movement. It's gentrification fetishists and the political circles who believe that they can just make the destitute and impoverished magically disappear by punishing them for existing.

Why does it sicken you? These areas that are getting spikes on them were not designed or intended to be slept on by homeless people. As a NYC resident, I am a strong advocate of government officials deterring homeless people through any means possible, even if a few people find it barbaric. When I walk the streets at night, I'd rather there wasn't a homeless man on every bench begging me for money. The amount that I am asked for money in this city is outrageous and it needs to come to an end since homelessness here is growing so rapidly.

Are we working on rehabilitation centers? Not just shelters, but places that reacclimate individuals into working society? Perhaps moving from the shelter to a vocational rehab with assisted living. You would be in a type of partial program where you were in patient and paid partial towards rent while going through vocational rehab. During the training, you would have lessons on domestic violence, budgeting, gambling, pest and critter control, and economic emergencies or job loss as well as trauma, sickness and other causes of homelessness and how to cope against them.
It's not ideal and not everyone would be for it, but it's a start, and more people would benefit from transitioning back into society than just going back and forth between the shelter, a food bank, and the streets. People want to feel like people. They want to feel safe and be respected.
I'm disabled from a car accident, and before getting hit by a car, I never thought twice about these things even though I was in school to be a teacher. Now, I truly understand the need for a societal shift.

I was always under the impression that you could be on welfare for a fixed amount of time that could last indefinitely based on your needs. I was not informed, however, that welfare was a vigorous program that targeted the cause of different scenarios and worked to reverse those habits.
For example, someone homeless because their house burned down would have different traumatic experiences and issues with finding housing than someone who wasn't responsible with bills. And not everyone who qualifies for these programs want help based on various reasons.
Some being lazy, some being treated as less than human, some being mentally unstable, some not willing to put up with the conditions, or even trying to hustle the system.
There are so many variables. What I had in mind was not just a pacifier, which is how certain people see rehabilitation programs, but as a tool of redirection. It is true, I haven't looked up welfare programs because I personally haven't been in need of them. I have been blessed that despite getting hit by a car and being disabled, that I had things set in place in case of an emergency. However, I do not feel that those type of tools are exercised by everyone, and it isn't always due to incompetence, but by ignorance. By not knowing what you don't know.

When the same bad habits are repeated time and time again, you lose the urge to want to help and rightfully so. The problem is the power shift that contempt creates. When you no longer care about the well-being of those you are trying to assist, you get people in nursing homes being abused by caretakers, people with addictions being seen as filthy animals, and people on the street being stepped on and mistreated. It's frustrating because not everyone is genuine, but I don't feel our current system truly addresses those who need help. It is a complicated issue with many layers and scenarios, and the way we're approaching the solution doesn't seem to be working so far.
This is just my opinion, and I could very well be wrong, but I've seen people who genuinely work hard not receive the benefits they deserve just as I've seen people cheat the system.

Or maybe we shouldn't be trying to transition people back to society - maybe they need a kinder, less harsh society. Maybe (some) people need a different environment. Think about all the tribes that didn't have a modern version of work before Europeans showed up (in the Americas, Africa, Australia, or NZ) or different countries or even cats that do nothing all day. Maybe we need alternatives for modern life so people can opt out or have different expectations.
I hope we fix this in the near future. These uncomfortable benches affect more than just the homeless population. It affects the elderly, people with disabilities and injuries, pregnant women..etc.

@Vox, We have the same problem in germany. Some days ago my city received a shitstorm because the police gave an old man with dementia a ticket because he was sitting on a bench.
The bench is at a bus station and officially only for customers of the bus company. The old man lives in that street and goes out for a walk every day. On his walk he needs to take a rest on the bench and sits there for a couple of minutes. The police have been watching him to see if he will take a bus. He didn't take any of course and so they gave him a ticket over 180€ for using the bench although we wasn't a customer of the bus company.
After the shitstorm the police deleted the ticket, but that just shows the problem with benches etc. in public spaces. Almost every bench in my city is part of a bus or tram station, a café or some other place where you have to consume in order to use it. Benches in parks are like the only places where you can rest and sit for free...
Nowhere you can sit and just... be. If you're there you have to be buying something 24/7. I got some food from an Indian takeaway in one area and couldn't find a single bench to sit on whilst eating. Ended up sitting on the bus stop one.
I sometimes wonder if security cameras are sometimes decoys in many places to make it appear that we are being watched and deter people from hanging around certain areas for too long.

those "leaning bars" are quite irritating, we have them scattered around the UK. It's tough for people like my Grandma, who travel by train. She's got used to carrying around walking stick that turns into a stool, but it's not really ideal :/

Book of Stories, did you not hear? There aren't enough shelters for them, and it isn't easy to just get a job. You have to actually have the money to search for jobs, then you have to get ready ro interviews and stuff, and because you're homeless, they'll probably choose someone else over them. I'm sick of people who think it's as simple as a click of the fingers to get a job, sorry, but for some people it is incredibly hard.

As a person with anxiety, I always loved the divided benches (with the little metal arm rests in certain increments) because it feels less awkward for me to sit in my "own space" rather than gauge whether or not sitting next to another person already on the bench would be uncomfortable/too close/weird. My eyes have been opened and now I just feel bad that those benches exist.
Maybe a best of both worlds solution! I'd love to see benches that had big colorful stripes making up each seat rather than armrests--there's still a clear visual separation between the different seats, so it feels like you have your own spot, but it doesn't prevent a homeless person from stretching out.

It's interesting to know the thoughts people put into designing things like this. And I'd put it up there in terms of importance. Can we apply these principles of engendering discomfort in more abstract ways in people's lives? Can we design cities or spaces that can push people to think or act a certain way within them and achieve positive benefits from them, as opposed to just trying to stop a negative with these designs.

If it's somewhere pregnant women, elderly, disabled, or children might go, leaning bars are useless. But surely none of them go to McD's.
I used to do some urban backpacking across the U.S and some countries. I would often sleep on the ground because the benches had a bar in the middle. From what I have seen, these defensive tactics causes homeless individuals to relocate to concentrated areas such as parks.
It's making the places we live less liveable. Less friendly. Less inviting. And worst of all, less caring of those who need help the most. If homeless people are shunned from public places, that means they are out of sight, and out of mind, meaning less thought and public awareness towards assisting them. Pushing the "dirty under the rug" doesn't solve anything, it only makes us less empathetic.
Sounds fine to me. I don't want a government forcing people to be charitable and to a certain level. That is not the government's job. That is what a church or charity is for and nothing is stopping you from donating.
You don't believe it's a governments job to care for the safety and well being of its people? That's a shame. We have very different ideas of what a government should be I guess.
Also, making your city not hostile to homelessness isn't forcing anyone to be charitable. I'm not sure where you got that idea from. As I said earlier, if the homeless are forced out public areas, that means they're hidden from sight and mind from those who are capable of helping and offering empathy. It's a simple fact that awareness is the first step is solving social issues, and it's hard to be aware if the problems are hidden from the public.

it actualy makes it more friendly inviting and liveable. homeless covering your sidewalks and benches looks bad. they stink, they beg. some even steal. they arent bad people. but they are in a bad situation, that however does not excuse action and getting in the way. they hang around shopfronts reducing business and thus growth. they pester people for money.
@kor'vre , My idea is that if the problem was more visible, more people would try to solve it. That problem being homelessness. If it concerned enough people, or heck even bothered enough people they'd probably be more willing to find a solution. Hostile design is not a solution to the core issue. It's putting a bandage on an infected wound without treating it. The problem can only grow and fester if the problem is hidden from public awareness.
Short answer: prevents homeless people to live on the bench

As a homeless person (with a job, naturally), I can't say I'm impressed. Instead of finding ways to shelter the rising homeless population, "hostility" seems to describe the way that we're treated. As if feeling unwanted nearly everywhere I go isn't bad enough, life is expensive. Just to spend time in just about anywhere except the public library, I have to buy food in restaurants just so I can exist somewhere peacefully for a short time (plus I have nowhere to cook food for meals). I can't hang out in public (that's loitering) especially at night, and so just being homeless gets extraordinarily expensive, which is ironic and counter-intuitive. I don't understand why this measure would "reduce crime". While I can see the incentive to commit crime just to have a warm jail to sleep in at night, most homeless people would rather stay under the radar as life is already hard enough without a criminal record.
I was homeless, and I know how you feel. Most people don't know how hard it is to be in the shelter system or to live on the street. It is easy for them and will never get the struggle.
Contact the Coalition for the Homeless. It's free and they can set you up with case worker who will help. Coalitionforthehomeless.org. Also, serious health problems can develop in your legs if you are never able to lie down so do the best you can to get sideways when you sleep. Stay safe.
Jeff - everyone knows about that organization, but they can't help everyone. There are a lot of working people that just can't get into a shelter. They look at your financial assets at the time and a lot get turned down. There are also too many people in the shelter system right now and they can't house them all. They have X amount of beds and they are all being used. This is not an open and shut case. In some states they don't even have shelters and they are forced to live on the streets. People can't afford rent, especially in New York.
givememore4free I agree completely. I volunteer for them, they don't have a lot of resources, but it works. The important part with them is sticking with it. They get a lot of clients who come in once then miss appointments or stop showing up. When people stick with it they put their resources into getting those clients off the street permanently. It takes a while and it can be difficult if you live in the bronx or somewhere else far from the office, but it does work, and I hope it can for you.
@Jeff Goble I appreciate that, but I'm not a homeless "New Yorker"... I live in Bangor, Maine. We have 2 homeless shelters in this city, but they're always filled to capacity and overflowing (plus one of them doesn't even provide beds during the day, and my job is an overnight one). There are no deterrent designs in _our_ architecture, but the local casino finances the police and so we have quite a lot of them, and they'll rouse and move you no matter where you settle publicly.
It really says something about how we see the world that we're willing to spend more time and money taking care of prisoners because we're so "tough on crime" than we are on people who could actually have the opportunity to become productive members of society with a little support.
All that does is tell people that they should commit crimes for free food and board.
