Keep in mind that Papa Doc cursed his people and his country by dedicating Haiti to Lucifer and making their main religion Voodoo. This is cursing the land and must be abolished for a turnaround.
The only other important thing that was not mentioned is that in 1822, When the DR became independent, the president of Haiti marched in with 10,000 troops and unified the island, making Dominicans 2nd class citizens. The way the Haitian president paid the French off was by making the people of the DR pay for it. The Haitians occupied the DR until ousted 1844 and have been hated ever since. This in no way justifies the present treatment of Haitians but it does give context on why the Dominicans hate Haitians so much
but, like you said, "this in no way justifies the present treatment of Hatians". 1844 was a very long time ago, maybe its time for the island to unify once more and give Haiti the help it deserves.
LumpySpaceBrotha come again? Who said that in order to help a country it should be unified with its neighbor? By this surreal logic Mexico should be integrated within the US?
The fact it, "in no way justifies the treatment of Haitians" means that it's not worth mentioning and is not important. That would be like saying because the confederates invaded the Union states and killed millions of Union soldiers that we should now revoke citizenship of all people wearing confederate flags. You're just bringing it up in order to give someone a tool to argue it. "My brother once told me that nothing a man says before the word, "but" really counts." - Benjen Stark
themailman43 yes, that is what it means to be alive, and a living good hearted human being, to help your brothers and sisters when they are struggling... because if YOU don’t have everything you need to live a high quality peaceful life, than I DONT have everything I need... if you don’t have it, I don’t have it... because the “I” is the biggest LIE! There is no such thing as an individual, myself and my body never actually experience anything of myself, because the reality I experience is who and what I see, touch, taste, smell, hear, that surrounds me... we are defined by our surroundings, NOT the individual bodies...
It does make sense in context. Most of them died due to disease and not forced labor. The remained ones intermingle with the Spaniards and assimilated.
They didn’t exploit the land. Meaning they didn’t destroy the soul by forcefully harvesting the same crop. Certain soil needs 2-3 years to rejuvenate the minerals in order to produce another crop. Otherwise you destroy all the earth, and it becomes barren. The Spaniards didn’t do that, mainly because they understand agriculture. Exactly how the French did to Sicily, vs. what the Spaniards did.
Not really. The few remaining survivors from the smallpox pandemic assimilated with Hispanic people and Afro-Latinos throughout centuries of colonialism
This is so sad. It's so unfair that the first free black country faced so much racism for their bravery. The Hatians are beautiful and strong. Love from India
Ummm no, there really is a lot of work in the DR, those who go to the USA is because they want to have it easier with a lot of help from the government, period
That part about the bus ride checks is so true. An American citizen, I lived in the DR for nearly 2 years and only darker toned people were checked...constantly. That included myself. Once, a Dominican guard got so mad that he could not treat me any old kind of way because of my American passport that he hit my window seemingly out of frustration.
James Miller Bringing Africans there as slaves, robbing the island of its natural resources, leaving them there to fend for themselves with sanctions, embargoes etc ensuring the country does not prosper simply because they wanted freedom. I could keep going. Why is that not enough?
Spain abolished slavery in its colonies in 1513. The US abolished slavery on their own soil in 1865. Spain started with agressive conquering methods just like other super powers but they were abandoned much more quickly.
You forgot to mention that Dominican Republic got its independence from Haiti. The Haitian government occupied DR during 22 years. That’s another reason why they’re still having problems between each other.
It’s very shocking to see two dramatically different environments on the same island From physical to mental states From ecological to educational From economical to health
The fact that France had the audacity to tell Haiti that it owed them money after "stealing" themselves is just absolutely absurd and makes me so pissed off.
You realise haiti literally invaded and oppressed san domingue for decades. But im sure that debt from near 200 years ago is why they are poor today lol.
You know Greece still owes money from like 2 thousand years ago lol it can happen. And the real king of England is a farmer now in Australia because he ancestor went bankrupt lol.
things happen to everyone in all lifestyles, but it definitely puts things into perspective. I was raised to appreciate the little things in life, but I was even more humbled after my first visit. And after all they have been thru, they are still very proud & make due with the cards dealt. Very inspiring.
Not to excuse Spanish colonization, but you can always see a stark difference between the places Spain conquered, administered and then left, and the places France conquered and administered. Legally, Spain granted native indigneous peoples citizenship and equal legal footing (even though It might not have been transalated to complete equality in practice) since the 16th century, just a couple years after they colonised the land, something that no other imperial power ever did until they were internationally pressured or nationally forced to. Again, this does not excuse colonization but, in an attempt to not be anachronistic, it shows a huge difference in how Spain regarded its colonised land (at least at the beginning).
Very well said, significant differences should be emphasized between the colonizers and their respective transitional strategies (include the Brits , Portuguese, Dutch, Germans ...). Let's not re-awaken old prejudices and gripes however.
Colonisation doesn't need to be excused. It's one of the greatest things to have happened to the Americas. Without it, the area would be made up of primitive, equally violent tribes and would have none of the progress that Europe brought. People need to stop viewing colonisation as a negative. It isn't. Roman colonisation wasn't a negative for France, England or Spain - and the colonisation of the Americas overall moved the continent forward albeit in a lopsided and violent way. Regarding your point about the Spanish - this is absolutely true. The old towns in San Juan, Santo Domingo and Havana are marvels. The Spanish built universities, Cathedrals, tons of infrastructure. They even intermarried. The French and British saw their colonies as mere factories and invested nothing in them.
I never leave comments on any RUclips channels. But I was so touched by the lady with a big smile at the end of this video - 'I have no choice but to continue accepting mistreatment' .
Hayden Campbell does somebody wants to mention that the Clintons stood with the money peoples donate for the Red Cross and the only country helping them was DR ? Right that nobody talks about
I dont know what you want mentioned about this, is that part of the problem? Natural disasters racist or something? Also what the comment above means is that this kind of documentary does not put forward the good side of the Dominican people, they demonize them, while we are actually helping and then called racist for it.
@@cra2690 It says nothing of the Dominican people, other than they are allowed preferential treatment, and apparently don't like Haitians (coming from Haitians that are continually mistreated by border officials). It speaks to the nation, not the people.
Yes. This "documentary" is very one sided. Shortly after gaining independence from France, Haitians invaded and occupied the DR multiple times and forced them to help pay their debts to France. Obviously Dominicans show contempt for Haitians because of this.
@@OneStripeRyanactually youll learn that the Haitians attempted to genocide Dominicans and launched multiple unprompted invasions after gaining independence from the French

ngede nkiondalle I mean you could make a pretty good case for the French Southeast Asian colonies, as well as their Canadian and Louisianan colonies. But aside from those, yeah the rest aren’t doing well all.
This is a one-sided documentary. You could've taken 15 more minutes to explain how corrupt governments have kept Haiti from developing, how Haitian riches and assets are so unfairly distributed. The Dominicans also have a history of corrupt governments hindering the nation's development too, but what has happened in Haiti has to do a lot with the way they distribute and manage their own resources and how poorly they have handled their international relationships.
His Job Is To Demonize Dominican People He Does Not Care About The Pain And Sufferings Done To The Dominican People By The Hands Of Those Lovely Haitians.
What you said is partly true. The Dominicans were corrupt but they were patriotic and not patrio-pocket as opposed to Haiti. However, paying France 30 billion dollars in gold crippled Haiti. Other slave owning countries ostracized Haiti and did not allow Haiti to develop. If Haiti use the Rwanda Model, Haiti will be able to develop ruclips.net/video/PNM8WD-_TXY/видео.html
That's very true. I admit I forgot about the absurd debt Haiti had to pay to France and that plays a huge part on the status of the country's development. Thank you for the reminder.
It is also important to remember that Haiti invaded DR and oppressed the citizens there to use the DR's wealth to pay off France. Even after finally achieving independence 22 years later, DR was then occupied by the Spanish for 4 years, and by the Americans for 8 years. Haiti achieved independence first and started out with a much more able military and industry, the situation could be quite different had the Haitians continued that path.
Do a report on the aid offered by the Dominican Republic to Haiti that consumes the DR's health budget 🇩🇴 and the education of public schools paid for by the Dominican state so that Haitians can study in them. Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 cannot solve the Haitian problem France 🇫🇷 Canada 🇨🇦 and USA 🇺🇸 are rich countries and can forgive Haiti's external debt
@Juan Suarez "[the debt was] the modern equivalent of US$21 billion for the "theft" of the slaveowner's "property" and the land that they had turned into profitable sugar and coffee-producing plantations. This independence debt was financed by French banks and the American Citibank, and finally paid off in 1947." , Wikipedia, External debt of Haiti. So it is not 200 years ago. It is not to imagine where Haiti would stand without having to pay the debt and being treated equally. In addition to the debt France forced them to export haitian goods with a 50% discount to them. Sure Haiti has its own agency but there are many external factors we know about that made and makes it hard for Haiti to thrive. History is not about thinking or believing what happened but scientifically knowing.
I'm Dominican and I have so much love for my Haitian brothers and sisters. I don't see them any different than myself; I wish love & prosperity upon Haiti and it's people.
Rytis Kurcinskas I don’t know where you live, but it looks like you don’t live in DR. The Haitians already came and everywhere I go here in the capital and in Puerto Plata, I see Haitians. You don’t have to go far to listen to somebody speaking Haitian Creole here. I don’t know when they are going to destroy the country but they already came!
@@henryhill92So he probably was going to mention haiti invasion or occupation depending how you see it of Spanish Haiti at the time which lasted 1822-1844. During this time many laws that haitian government pass made discriminated against and made life harder for many white spanish elite. The life of most of the peasant no matter their background did not change. Boyer the hatain leader at time had a corrupt an ineffective government. After 22 years the spainard fought and gain independence from Haiti. Once Dominican Republic gain idependence they culuturally wanted to seperate from Haitian who kept many of the african tradition that they saw as backwards and primitive. The change needs to come from a change on their political arena. Haiti needs to raise up against injustice within their own, but they also need help to do it
Jj T what does racism has to do with the government not doing the right thing for their own people beginning with not giving them a certificate at birth! DR is not Haiti’s mother!!!
Very opportunely the presenter omitted that 1822 Haiti occupied DR by force, and that for 22 years Haiti obtained control of the entire island, taking advantage of the wealth of both nations to pay part of the debt with France. That is where the rivalry between nations is born. DR obtained its independence from Haiti. If you are Dominican in Haiti, you will not be treated well, but the documentary only shows part of the story

@@taelove9830 no one has forgotten the Parsley Massacre, just as no Dominican has forgotten the devil's span that gave the order. Trujillo, a dictator on the Dominican side for 30 years gave the order, because he got angry that the border was again being pushed by Haitian settlers. Even if there was a treaty signed, even if more than 6km2 were given to Haiti, it was a truly HEINOUS act. And the irony of it all is that Trujillo himself was a descendant of Haitians.
Obviously, we can see how many ONG and countries makes pressure on us to “accept” them and open our borders but they just deport them when they’re trying to get a better life in those countries. Irony.
More than any other country in the world uh? 🤔. But y'all keep deporting illegal Haitians and even their RD born kids back to Haiti. Some help that is. My country in the other hand, had taken thousands of Haitians after the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti. Thousands fled looking to get into the the US but they were rejected. We had to take them in, and know this they are hard workers and have integrated into our society, ask anyone in Tijuana about the Haitians and nobody has anything bad to say about them. At least here they behave and act accordingly, with respect thus they're reciprocated. Cheers 🍻
Dominicans also slaughter the Haitians by the border. There is already a great disdain for Haitians in the DR, 10x’s worse on the border. You saw the mistreatment first hand with Dominican border guards not allowing Haitian sales people into the market. It’s supposed to be for both countries equally, yet they treat them like dogs

It was to buy the land and it was Haiti's idea. JJ Dessalines came up with the idea as he'd seen Napoleon sell Louisiana to the Americans. The Haitian government was worried Charles X would follow on and sell "Saint-Domingue" to either the Spanish or the Americans, so wanted legal title. Charles X asked for (much) more, though Haiti got access not only to France's domestic market, but also Britain's markets were opened up.

In the video it is not mentioned that after Dominican independence, the president of Haiti invaded the country making the Dominicans become lower class citizens, causing the Dominicans to arm a revolution and emerge victorious, that is one of the reasons why Dominicans have been afraid that history will repeat itself, and even so, in the 2011 earthquake, the Dominicans were the first to offer help to their border neighbors, all the racist Dominicans should not be globalized since many Haitians live together with the Dominicans without any problem.

Pretty inaccurate excuse. The Spaniards also invaded DR and mistreated Dominicans, but until this day MANY Dominicans still have high regards of Spain, consider themselves white and even think of Spain as the motherland. Why don’t they have hostility towards Spaniards like they do of Haitians?

Not everyone hates each other. There is more that meets the eye. Hell, one of my best friends is Dominican. There is a lot of history that explains the animosity (it exists). But, geez, it feels like Haitians are painted like poor victims when we have our issues and not everyone is extremely poor. DR is not insanely rich, but they did help out Haiti on several occasions. Plus, when one of the president's called out France for heavily taxing Haiti and crippling them, he disappeared. Also, worth mentioning how the U.S. loves to meddle on the island's business. Invading Haiti and ruling for two decades in some kind of military dictatorship? The various elections where U.S. has tried to be heavily implicated such as trying to have Wyclef Jean elected... ... ...
It was the same in the DR. The USA intervened and pretty much forced us. Our dictator Trujillo was trained by the US military and they encouraged his regime simply because he was not communist. And after he was assassinated, our first democratically elected president Juan Bosch was quickly “replaced” by Joaquin Balaguer, another American puppet.
Your comment is heavily well based and reflects the reality of this island. Sir, You did not mention the massacre by the Haitian Blacks massacred all the whites in 1804. This removed the educated folk who could have developed the country. This is an extract from Wikipedia which I think explains a lot. "Girard writes in his book Paradise Lost: "Despite all of Dessalines' efforts at rationalization, the massacres were as inexcusable as they were foolish."[33] Trinidadian historian C. L. R. James concurred with this view in his breakthrough work The Black Jacobins, writing that "the unfortunate country... was ruined economically, its population lacking in social culture, [and] had its difficulties doubled by this massacre". James wrote that the massacre was "not policy but revenge, and revenge has no place in politics"
Don’t forget Haiti promptly enforced military occupation over the DR and heavy taxation to pay off its debts to France after the DR gained independence from Spain. The DR then had to fight for their independence from Haiti. This might explain the cultural rift a little more than just boiling it down to racism. Love these videos but they never tell the full story.
Haiti took over the DR to prevent the entire island from being reinslaved and also because the enslaved and mixed race population of the DR (or rather what is now the DR) were trying to overthrow their spanish masters and asked them too. Yes, the heavy taxation (which happened on the entire island, not just that side) soured things but initially a good portion of the DR population wanted the Haitians there. It has a lot to do with racism because the white Spaniard elite sold the Dominican masses a revisionist version of history so that they could keep economic control. There are black Dominicans that actually know the true history of how it all went down. Unfortunately the false narrative has been enforced for some 200 years, so progressive voices are drowned out and the truth continues to be obscured.
@@Xenlacasa45 This is not accurate. Slavery in Santo Domingo was very much alive back then. At least one-third of the population was still enslaved and it was the Haitians that put an end to that. And to top it off, many French people that served in the French military against Haitians during the Revolution ended up fleeing to the Spanish part of the island and made a life there. They carried that plantation mentality with them and were setting up military defense bases in the eastern part. It was a real threat. And the Spanish elite that remained would have been attracted to that too, seeing that Saint-Domingue had literally been the most profitable colony in the Western Hemisphere under the plantation system. There is still some French influence in the DR to this day, you see it with some family names. The Haitians were trying to prevent the reinstatement of slavery on the whole island.

ConservativeAtheist nah dr doesn’t have the option of using crime as a argument. They claim Haiti is sending criminals to dr but dr is sending criminals to USA.
@ConservativeAtheist The native people were black so what's your point? The racism comes from the french and Spanish treating the slaves like dirt and then pinning lighter skinned people against their darker counter parts. That hatred of their own color continues through generations. Now you have dominicans who deny their black heritage or else experience discrimination against themselves.
I’m Dominican and unfortunately many Dominicans are still very prejudiced towards Haitians. My grandmother calls my grandpa Haitian as an insult because he is dark skinned. Not all of us are like though, I hope that one day Haiti gets the help it needs. I’d also like to point out that this video makes it seem like the D.R is a very rich country, which in reality it is not. The rich parts of D.R are usually the tourist areas and most of the island lives in extreme poverty- that is why my family moved to NYC in the 70s. Compared to Haiti, Dominican Republic is wealthy.
Nonsense. Blame the Clintons. They went there with Millions of US Dollars that was supposed to be used to build 100s of homes for these people. They built a dozen homes and left. It was the way the Clintons enriched themselvs while cheating others.
Hey man, fellow dominican here. I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic and I want to correct you on just one thing. Most people in the country don't live in extreme poverty, in fact only about an eight of the population lives in poverty, not extreme poverty, just poverty. The DR is disorganized, corrupt, and partially ignorant, yet one thing I am proud of is the fact that most Dominicans don't live in poverty or extreme poverty as you put it.

When France told Haiti, "You owe us a debt for all of the assets that you stole from us when you became independent", they were specifically referring to the cost of the slaves that were freed. In other words, they were saying "When you freed yourselves, you stole yourselves from us, and now you have to pay us" (which is absurd). And since France had already destroyed Haiti's farmland, Haiti would have starved without trade -- and France pressured other nations not to trade with Haiti until Haiti paid. Haiti still has not recovered from that.
Also, back then there was no UN for Haiti to complain to. There was no Soviet Union or China to supply arms, military training, advisers and trade. No one wanted to help this Black nation prosper. That's why things are so bad in Haiti.
Michael Waddell wrong. Yes the French did make us pay for our freedom BUT we did sorta recover. We never developed into a 1st world but people wasn’t starving and living on thrash like today. We even took care of the Dominicans at one point. The country went into a disaster dive 30 years ago after baby doc left. Our politicians since then is what got Haiti in this condition
It didn't even end there. Haiti has been prey even after that. It's democratic, stable government beings looted by criminals like the Bill Clinton White House etc... The predatory behavior on Haiti has only continued.
@Justin Credible Stop being such a crybaby! The internet allows people to be brutally honest about their REAL feelings! Extremely interesting that while discussing the history of Haiti you completely neglected to mention that shortly after independence from France, Haitians continued slavery, killed ethnically mixed people in the county and invaded The DR multiple times. See the beautiful thing about opinions is that everyone is unfortunately entitled to one, and although yours show literal no knowledge of our history or grasp of our society, it is still your opinion. I humbly exhort you to read current knews, the brutality of Haitians against our country, the university and hospital we made for them, and how they renamed them to the name of the leader of the dominican massacre.
It's not because they're black, a lot of Dominicans are black too, it's just that they're from a different culture, you're projecting your American perspective on a situation that is not American in nature.
Change the title please. This is not about a divided island, only the perspective of Haiti is explained. A very important detail that should have been mentioned is that the Dominican Republic became independent not from Spain, but from Haiti. This should also be considered. It sets a completely different perspective of who Haitians are for Dominicans. This Documentary is completely biased!
The island wasn't "rich in resources like sugar and coffee" -- sugar and coffee aren't native to Hispañola. These plants were introduced, plantations were carefully planned and planted. Labor was brought in -- alas, slave labor. But all this required capital and planning and management effort.
@Mata Telinga I would disagree with your assessment of the 1965 separation albeit it is from my perspective as someone from Singapore. All I can say is I am grateful that Singapore has been doing well economically.
Haitians do not want to take responsibility for their demise. Nations prosper when they make their country better, not because they immigrate to another one. Singapore is admired because they made it better against all odds (not perfect yet).
@@cristiandiaz6333 Singapore is fortunate to have leaders that are not corrupt. Many countries with far more resources than Singapore unfortunately have leaders who steal from the people and end up with a country in a mess.
@@GKP999 That's my point. I want DR (and Haiti as well) to be like Singapore. Dominicans are trying very hard to see that come true. But, the haitians cannot seen to agree on their future but one everyone who is not haitian to feel sorry for them.
I don’t understand how The French and The Spain’s fought over a land that neither country owned. And then what blows me even more, the original people of the continent adopt the thoughts and lifestyles of the two oppressors and continue to be divided instead of coming together. Smh makes no sense. And the French have some nerve putting Hati in debt. They should have been the ones owing debt !
Who owns land? People or countries who have the military power over it. Its very simple. Why does China control Tibet? Military Power. Why does Russia control Crimea? Military Power. Why does the USA control over big parts of North America? Military Power.
Tell me about it. Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore used to be one, then a bunch of white people drew lines in the sea and we ardently believe in them.
I enjoyed the video and love that it pointed out all of the flaws with society in a country that is rarely talked about or mentioned. However, I do not believe that the video touched on all of the reasons for the continued animosity between the Dominicans and Haitians, it does not only boil down to racial conflicts. One country cannot be blamed for the tensions that lie between them. The video did not mention how Haiti had control of the entire island between 1822-1844, and that during this time they oppressed the Dominican population with raised taxes to pay off the debt that Haiti had with France, making it illegal for white or light skinned people to own land or businesses. It also missed the fact that the Dominican population was fed up and declared its independence in 1844 and had to fight continuous attacks from the Haitians until the 1860’s. These historic events tainted the relationship between the two countries. I am not saying this to excuse the horrible ways the Dominicans are treating the Haitians, however there are two sides to every story and I just think that the video did not present all of the facts.
+Charlene Gonzalez A thoughtful, well educated and unbiased comment. It's refreshing to see on a page like this. One thing however that I almost never see Dominicans mention in reference to the Haitian invasion in the 1800's is some of the reasons why that happened. One reason for example was that the DR was still a slaveowning territory , and it is not often mentioned that it was, in fact, Haiti who fully abolished slavery in the DR in 1822, and because it was white and/or light skinned people who benefited from enslaving people on the island, the Haitians practiced reverse racism and oppression against white and light skinned Dominicans as a form of revenge and personal justice. While understandable, there was no moral justification for that, because two wrongs don't make a right. It just shows how this whole cycle began with Spanish and French enslavement of darker skinned people on that island, and the cycle of colorism and resentment it inspired in two neighboring cultures, and how that destructive cycle still manifests itself centuries later in many parts of those populations.

You are correct, and of course, some of that resentment was remembered and passed down to their children and onward. I have a feeling they left it out for a reason, though. Some think they are discriminated against just because of their color. There's a lot more to what happened.. **shrug**
France should rebuild that country. They used them and exploited them. Look at all the African countries that were colonised by France. They are still their cash cows and the people can hardly afford one healthy meal a day. What a pity!!
A thing worth noting about those 150 million francs that the French demanded after the Haitians revolted in the early 1800s is that it wasn't just for any kind of lost property - it was for the Haitians themselves. Haiti spent the next decades paying off their own very beings because a colonial power had lost them as slaves. For more information on the history of Haiti, I would heartily suggest searching for medical anthropologist Paul Farmer, formerly a United Nations Special Envoy, and who popularized the concept of "structural violence", that is violence that is perpetuated not through personal force, but through political and economic policy by denying people movement, legal status, access to utilities, healthcare and so on. His writings on suffering, Haiti and related concepts are worth a look. To Vox; thanks for making this video. And for all the misery and hardships covered, it was shot and edited very beautifully, and seamlessly integrated with the infographics and maps.
I'm intrigued, will look into the work of Paul Farmer, thanks for the recommendation. I've been researching Haitian history on and off for the past two years or so, and recently I came across a book (formerly known as Paradise Lost) by Philippe Girard. While it was surprisingly easy to read, it was also full of the opinions of the author, which I found unbearably racist. Have you read Girard's work? If so, what did you think of it? Any Haitian literature (from Haiti) you might know or recommend? Thanks!
Curious to know why didnt they mention the part where Haiti occupied the DR, taking over of the whole island killing thousands and implemented a whole dictatorial regimen for more than 20 years and then Dominicans fought them hard and claimed independence.
So are we going to blame the actions of a dictator on millions of people it's like saying Africans should slaughter all people from former colonial nations As if everyone in those nations is to blame for the actions of a greedy few
@@garrett9945 Well, if your people doesn’t know how to manage a country and keep shading the DR every time they got an opportunity that says a lot about you.
When I visited Machu Pichu many years ago, a very wise Peruvian guide said that our countries are not under-developed they are under-managed, because the Incas were able to produce crops on the ladder of a steep mountain out of sheer ingenuity. We need better leadership in Latin America, not Bolsonaro´s nor Maduro´s who are stuck in the past still in the socialist-fascist mindset.
And the Incan empire was a constitutional democracy? You are glorifying and demonizing the same political system. Your first point is valid. How the country is managed makes the difference
Yes. Management is an essential factor. But It's clearly a different case here. The world operated on a racist drive. To put something they felt as threatening under massive pressure.

drewbc32 We don’t have what you would describe as “racism” in the US. Haitians ARE rounded up and targeted here but not because of their “race.” Black Dominicans who don’t look Haitian aren’t harassed by authorities. In the US, a white foreigner is treated better than a black American. That doesn’t happen here. A lighter skinned Haitian is worse off than a darker skinned Dominican. So the problem is n’t simply skin tone. That being said, like most people of color, the lighter black Dominicans are favored
David De Jesus - No they don’t, not to this degree. (Tho there is some stereotyping) Authorities don’t just round up ppl to deport based on their appearance. Honestly you don’t see discrimination very often. You mainly just hear ppl talking about it.
The two sides are very different environmentally. The mountain spine dividing the countries inhibits rainfall in the Haiti side and Haiti does not have the high mountain valleys that are the food producing zones in the DR. The use of charcoal in Haiti has left the ground bare and destroyed the soil. Now when the rains come, there can be devastating flooding.

Ridiculously biased video. You should not have omitted the origin of the resentment between haitians and dominicans. It goes both ways, and it has historical reasons; Haiti invaded the Dominican Republic for 22 years until dominicans had to fight for their independence. You blamed the depleated land on the extraction of resources during colonial times, when in reality these practices have persisted and are now basically embedded in haitian culture. The dominican government, to no avail, has introduced multiple programs to help Haiti with the reforestation of their land. Furthermore, the dominican government has been the main contributor to the humanitarian relief after every crisis Haiti has undergone. Specially after the 2010 earthquake. Also, you outright gave false information regarding the regularization program. The DR is an underdeveloped country despite you saying it's "rich", and it evades me how you'd expect border patrol men to know about the legislation. You failed to mention that to help fix the situation of the stateless population, the DR put in place the program to help them get their documentation in order to be able to work legally. The program that you called euphemism gave a period of ONE year for every person to be able to complete the process. After the period ended, the dominican government gave several extensions (they did not have to). The Dominican Republic is not able to economically sustain the burden of hundreds of thousands of ilegal immigrants. Like every other sovereign country, it has the right to regulate the situation. In my opinion, retroactive laws are unlawful, but that's why the regularization program was put in place. It is true that dominicans often mistreat haitians, there is no excuse for that. Just know that haitians dislike dominicans to the same extent. Please inform yourself better before slandering a whole nation. Simply asking around in a country where people are vastly uneducated is irresposible journalism.

True, but then you have Argentina which for decades was one of the wealthiest nations in the world and was the second most immigrated to country in the world after the US. But then it declined due to its own failures outside of colonization. Venezuela was also doing well in the early 20th century but then declined for the same reasons. Colonization isn't the only problem. Ethiopia was never colonized, yes it was occupied by Italy during WWII but was never a colony. Its still one of the poorest countries in the world. The USA and Canada were colonies, but they are by far one the wealthiest countries and most industrialized countries in the world.
Paloma Karina Santos de Jesus All American countries were created by colonisation. So while you are technically correct, everything great about them can also be traced back to colonisation.
youknowho14 the only UK prosperous colonies are the ones populated by white people, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and United States, they basically massacred the indigenous people and established a copy of their own country. The other colonies in especially in Africa and Asia ended up being empoverished and corrupted after getting independence. The Dutch in Indonesia were just the ruling class, an elite but they never replaced the natives. Same with the Spanish in the Philippines. They only exploited those colonies for their resources and then they left.

8:28. Keep reading... "With the exception of those in transit " what the high court did layer was specify who's in transit. .. anyone who entered the country illegally is basically "in transit" thus making them illegal even if born in Dominican land, being born in the D.R. DOESN'T make you an automatic Dominican citizen (just like 84% of the countries in the world). Fyi , Haitian citizens are never stateless as they have the Haitian citizenship regardless of where they're born per their own constitution. Just clarifying.
Allow me to touch on this topic. As the son of a Dominican man I feel as though I have somewhat of a say in this topic. As explained, the island of Hispaniola was divided between the French and the Spanish, though once they were both liberated from their respective rulers and became independent countries, Haiti decided to take advantage of their earlier independence and take over the Dominican Republic and their lack of a development of an army, which they did for 20 or so years. Juan Pablo Duarte devised a plan to regain independence from Haiti, and had done so successfully. So obviously there is a grudge from those early years. Despite the many years that have passed, Haitians (not all, just some) have illegally crossed the border and have even committed some horrifying crimes. For instance, take my great uncle who was machete’d to death in the border town of Banica, and for what? The few pesos he had, the need to fulfill some bloodlust that those specific Haitians had? His death was in no way justified and thankfully his killers have been dealt with properly, but this is just one of many cases of the crimes that the Dominican Republic has to face as a result of many Haitians illegally entering the country. It’s not that Dominican people inherently hate Haitian people, it’s just that there’s enough Haitians entering the country illegally and committing crimes that has led the Dominican Republic and the people that inhabit the land to see Haitians in a negative light. Yes, I understand that the situation over in Haiti is serious, especially because they have yet to recover entirely from that massive earthquake in 2010 and the lengths that these people have to go through to get food, water, clothing, etc. is extreme but then again, the Dominican Republic isn’t a rich country either. Though it does have a noticeably better economy than Haiti, that doesn’t make it any less of a third world country than it already is. There is a plethora of issues that the Dominican Republic faces including political corruption that has to do with the country maintaining this third world country status (as told by my father), so with that being put out, the Dominican Republic can’t single-handedly help out Haiti, especially with all the things that have happened since the two countries gained their independence and the things that have happened to each country internally. Ask any other Dominican and they will say something similar which would follow the lines of “it’s not that we hate Haitians, we just don’t like what they’re doing with our country, and our third world status doesn’t make us equipped to aid Haiti properly.” I, personally, do not hate Haitian people, and neither does the rest of my family, and Im pretty sure a decent percentage of the Dominican population doesn’t either, it’s just that we don’t really appreciate all the negative things they have done to our country. With all that being said, I sympathize with the Haitians and hope they make a recovery soon enough, no country should have to go through what they have to go through.
Also, allow me to point out that Haitians and Dominicans are both of African origin, our darker complexion is as a result of such. Therefore, how is there racism if we are both of African origin? I understand that Haitians are generally more darker than Dominicans, but I see it more as xenophobia, which isn’t even that because of the many things that have happened between Haiti and the Dominican Republic that has led DR to “hate” Haiti
@@israelalcantara5326 Oh really now? Because you've never heard of mixed race/light-skinned people being racist against dark-skinned black people? Colorism doesn't exist now? Colonialism and slavery which brought this about never happened? You're being disingenuous (and that's basically my polite way of calling you a liar)
@@BlackMoonstone531 also, one more thing I forgot to mention. Haitians themselves live in a colorist society, so you could say that there’s internal racism between themselves, too.
This is French colonialism. The French simply exploited all you could in colonial countries, this is what happened in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, which were Indochina in 19th and 20th century.
The idea that people are responsible for the actions of their ancestors is a very dangerous precedent to set. It's the sort of stuff that starts wars. Lets leave alone the fact that European colonization was, by far, a net positive for every country, especially the Africans.
It's also led to the construction of infrastructure and urbanization of the area. This is most prominent in Africa, where capitals of former colonies are still among the most developed on the continent. As for artificial borders, I'm stunned that anyone would selfishly deprive the third world of the benefits of diversity. There are no negative consequences to mixing the world's people together, and for you to suggest otherwise is racist and bigoted. I'm literally shaking right now. Africa and Latin America were both shitholes long before colonization. Africa, in particular still hadn't developed agriculture or domesticated animals by the time Europeans began colonization in the 19th century. These areas have only recently begun to develop and urbanize, thanks to the influence of Western Civilization.
They've only recently begun to urbanize because they have breathing room, before that Western "Civilization" made a point to rape them into the ground and use them like cattle.

Sir, You did not mention the massacre by the Haitian Blacks massacred all the whites in 1804. This removed the educated folk who could have developed the country.
@@BlackMoonstone531 we were not gonna be reinslaved because slavery was on its way out to due to the Spanish neglecting Santo Domingo.

@Daraknid hey bro do you know while there's so much tension between Haiti and Dr ?

Colonization. They left the islands worse off. Sure they gave the language, culture, etc. But these "gifts" is not something that was asked for. These lands have their own before they were colonized.

The Haitian “hatred” began when Haiti invaded the Dominican Republic years ago and took over the entire island. It’s a shame that they didn’t mention this information during the video. They made it seem like there was no absolute reason why Dominicans acted that way towards Haitians. Its deeper than what the media portrays it to be.
Edit: All that aside. The editing and coloring of the video was just amazing. Truly beautiful.
Older General Skywalker Not all Dominicans act this way. It’s the same with police brutality in the United States. Is every policeman racist because of the actions of few individuals? No. It’s crazy. We just want Haitians to be legal in the country just like in the states. Get a residency. IT MAKES YOU LEGAL. We deport not only undocumented Haitians but also Europeans and Americans. This isn’t a race issue. Its a history issue.
And just to be clear the Haitians had a different constitution that ours. Even though our constitution said that to become Dominican you have to be born in the Dominican Republic, Haiti’s constitution said that it didn’t matter where you were born, if your parents are Haitians you are a Haitian. This contradiction was one of the reasons why the Dominican Republic changed it’s Constitution.
Gabriel Casati they fled to the Dominican Republic not invaded. Besides, why should something that has happened way in past, dictate how you treat people in the present. If that kind of attitude was applied in today's society African Americans should have hatred towards caucasians. Jewish descent should have hatred towards all Germans. And the French should hate the Spanish.
Older General Skywalker it was a mutual alliance which, suprise surprise. Haiti betrayed and also tried to invade. La trinitaria fought against Haiti's tyranny in exchange for them to fight against Spain's dominion, and guess who did not keep their side of the deal and then actually tried to take over the island again?

I humbly exhort you to read current knews, the brutality of Haitians against our country, the university and hospital we made for them, and how they renamed them to the name of the leader of the dominican massacre.
Gabriel Casati so, why don't the Dominicans hate the Spanish?
It's not because they're black, a lot of Dominicans are black too, it's just that they're from a different culture, you're projecting your American perspective on a situation that is not American in nature.

Change the title please. This is not about a divided island, only the perspective of Haiti is explained.

Every economical and social problem in Latin American and African countries can somehow be trace back to its colonization.

True, but then you have Argentina which for decades was one of the wealthiest nations in the world and was the second most immigrated to country in the world after the US. But then it declined due to its own failures outside of colonization. Venezuela was also doing well in the early 20th century but then declined for the same reasons.

I feel the exact same way towards Dominicans…it’s not that I hate them I just don’t like what they are doing to America.
@@antoniotaylor2808 wait what’s going on with Dominicans in America?
@@BlackMoonstone531 also, one more thing I forgot to mention. Haitians themselves live in a colorist society, so you could say that there’s internal racism between themselves, too.
This is French colonialism. The French simply exploited all you could in colonial countries, this is what happened in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, which were Indochina in 19th and 20th century.
They did the same in Maghreb (Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia)
The Tribal Funkster Spain is still a lot better than it's former colonies
They've only recently begun to urbanize because they have breathing room, before that Western "Civilization" made a point to rape them into the ground and use them like cattle.
I went to Haiti to help out after the earthquake. I’ve never been anyplace like it. They’re the most wonderful people but really held back by their government
WRONG .... OUR GOVERMENT!
It's amazing that Jamaica and Cuba which is nearby DR, embraces their "Blackness" but DR chooses to go white. Guys, it is very important that we identify who we are and pass that along to the next generation. No hate on whites - that would be wrong. I work and live in (NY) where there are all kind of people. Since inquiring and knowing my roots (no pun intended) it has made me a better father to my son and husband to my wife. I am Panamanian by birth but my roots are in Jamaica, a gift from my ancestors who went to Panama to help build the Panama Canal, when the French "got sick" while there to build the canal. The message here to my DR brothers and sisters, embrace fully who you are. 100% of anything is no longer. My son marry a non black woman whom I fully accept and love as my daughter-in-law. I hope that my grand kids don't only hold on to the white part of who they are. DR citizens "must" not treat our Haitian brother and sisters they way the Europeans did eons ago; it is wrong, it's wrong; shame on any Dominican who show racist behavior and attitude toward any Haitian person.
@@MrHazyDayz
I'm more afraid of what people like you are doing to my country.
thanks
@@MrHazyDayz It's the burden we carry.
Very brave and strong people. They fought for their freedom just to be punished for decades. Praying Haiti gets good Leadership that cares for their people soon and can become prosperous Country.. 🙏
No.
Like the first 4 Emperors for life they had?
Haiti has been independent for 200+ years... That isn't going to happen. Black majority countries have never developed into any kind of civilized or developed society. It has nothing to do with colonization either (over 200 years to improve and didn't)
didn’t they take over and tule the dominican republic for many years and put them under harsh treatment?
@@cody4916 Mansa Musa of Mali was the richest Man in the World and had a thriving civilization until he went flaunting his wealth to the Modern Egyptians. After that visit converted to Islam. He became consumed with the religion and development with university to teach it there that his wealth and empire diminished. There are several Kingdoms in Africa destroyed after colonization or religion. You are right. It was the Leader's fault. They failed the people. Hopeful for a change . There are developed and safe countries like Rwanda, Ghana, Senegal and parts of Nigeria like Lagos. Praying the rest will follow their lead.
Seem like Haiti has been paying the price of freedom from day 1 🤦🏾♀️😔
Exactly, If they moved out the Haitians and imported the Boer White South Africans the country would be recovered and an economic powerhouse in 5-10 years. Truth hurts, but not acknowledging it does not help the people.@Jano van Pelt
Belle Jolie this is only true because white people like to help white owned countries so if white people owned Haiti they would help it just like how the light skinned and white people in Haiti are 9/10 rich
@Jano van Pelt brazil is mostly white, humongous country, tropical and poorer than the dominican republic (in terms of GDP PPP per capita) My country is the DR btw.
@Alex Denton117 i wish we could just deport all these haitians back to the Congo or give them all to the french as presents.
@Jano van Pelt maybe not right now but it was a couple of years ago. Argentina is another example btw. Care to explain?
What humans can do to each other, that is one thing. But it is crazy how much difference some nature makes and this is a clear case when we look at these two countries. We don't notice trees until we have none left and then it becomes a problem...
Too bad they cut their trees down.
It is also amazing how injustices go on and on and on..Years..
+Eric Hartman I went to Haiti this summer and had a blast ..
Sincerely Nel..Cool! We almost bought into a development in the DR but it fell apart. We've been to the DR several times and enjoyed it. I've wanted to see Haiti too but don't know when it will be possible. I had a stopover in Port au Prince almost 20 years ago and was shocked at the poverty just looking out the window of the plane. The people that got on were impeccably dressed and nice though. I would imagine they were of the few upper class..
+Eric Hartman that’s the problem most people are port au prince and thinks that’s Haiti , and it’s not . Every where has it poverty areas it just so happens the capital is the poorest area, of course what’s televise it would be the poorest area. What’s actually crazy about all of this is that most of capitals are poor even in America and we seem to never advertise that
you answered your own question in the first 40 seconds. DR is politically stable, haiti is politically volatile. stable governments create prosperity. nothing is worse for trade, investment and business than ever changing political landscapes that create risk.
Meh the DR isnt doing that great either, just as bad as the rest of Latin America.

And still more than triple the homicides of the US and half its population living on the poverty line.
@@ericktellez7632 not even close to half... 26% of the population is living in poverty and most of the ones who live in "poverty" dont actually live in poverty, they just dont have a lot of money cause they live in rural areas, but they do get everything they need cause they grow food themselves and education and healthcare are free here, so i dont see why anyone would say they are living in poverty.

They are, the standard of the UN sets them below the poverty line.
Didn't mention the Haitian occupation for 22years and all the massacres including Moca which is even written into Haitian history by Haitian historians. This massacre is part of a series of Haitian invasions
to Santo Domingo and is part of Siege of Santo Domingo (1805). Haitian historian Jean Price-Mars wrote that the troops killed white, black and mixed inhabitants of Santo Domingo. This event has been presented in Haiti as a fight against slavery.
Also as part of Haiti's debt repayment tot France.
