For the first time ever in 2014, the U.S. recorded more undocumented migrants from Central America than from Mexico. In particular, 52,000 unaccompanied children were detained between October 2013 and June 2014. With what seemed to be a looming humanitarian crisis to deal with, the Obama administration enlisted the help of Mexico, and President Enrique Peña Nieto's administration.
Together, they launched the Southern Border Program initiative: the U.S. provided funding, equipment, and training to Mexico in exchange for a crackdown along Mexico's southern border. After all, many would-be migrants from Central America to the U.S. must pass through Mexico first.
This policy worked for a few years, but levels of undocumented migrants are on the rise again. And the mounting human costs make it increasingly difficult to call a success.

I am from Guatemala. The country is almost the worst country in all of America, second only to Haiti. The violence here is unreal, so present in people's lives that one of the newspapers is nicknamed 'Muerto Diario', Dead Newspaper, for the amount of murders that appear on it. I live in a pretty safe area of my town, and even I see the poverty and violence on a daily basis. My mother was robbed not a minute after she left our house. My best friend lives in one of the most impoverished and violent barrios in town, and they see a shootout almost every week. Our people are incompetent because they don't get to go to school. People live in landfills, and are excited when they find rotting food in the trash. It doesn't help that our leaders are corrupt and the main industry is drug trafficking. These are the reasons people try to escape from the country and look for a better life in other countries. Visas expire, airplane tickets are expensive, and applying for residency is near impossible, and people know this, so illegal immigration is their only option. If the crackdown doesn't stop, all these poor people will end up dead. These changes should help peole seeking new lives, not doom them. The gangs in these countries control everything, and if they find out you tried to escape them, you and your family is as good as dead. So many people are looking for shelter, and if they get that right denied, these people will lose all hope and succumb to violence, and join it. I do not support illegal immigration, all I'm saying is it should be safer and easier for people to make these journeys to find a better life.
Edit: We're having elections right now, and if this woman Sandra Torres wins the elections, there's a good chance that Guatemala will fall to Socialism. My family and I are percieved as extremely wealthy because of our family history, even though we're not, so we are really threatened by invasions or robberies, and with the government turning a blind eye, the narcos could do whatever they want.
Edit 2: Recently we had country-wide protests against one of the better presidents we've had in my life, which really isn't saying much. There's still much corruption in the country, but we might be able to make it through

For almost a century, it was bananas. The tactics implemented were basically the same though. Flood a country with weapons to create instability, but make sure your guy has the best weapons so that once he's killed off the opposition, America can have cheap bananas.
This isn't a drug problem, although legalizing a popular, harmless drug like weed would basically fix it overnight. It's a problem of the US consistently jeopardizing the rest of the world to protect the interests of a few corporations that get almost total power in the US.

Not to mention it's very common for hopeless people to have hope by trying to have kids and hoping that they could do better... Especially in environments that lack the idea of liberal/libertarian individualism, which is surprisingly ( or not) again, positively correlated with level of education and income (overall).

Donny, my man, the only thing the father and son did wrong was being born in the wrong country. How can you not feel an ounce of empathy for them? The people in the US that can't find jobs should work harder to be more competitive because working hard gets you opportunities in the US without the risk of dying unlike other countries.

Donny Kiles Buddy, first of all you’re the “imbecile” because you don’t know how to spell a simple word. Secondly I’ve been to Mexico and was dumbfounded by the amount of jobs the Mexican people create on their own. When I past the poorer regions I noticed people in extreme poverty selling candy on the street or cleaning cars when they would stop for a red light. Saying us as Americans are struggling without jobs is exaggerating as if they really wanted they could get a job, even if it’s a shitty one they could get one. As I don’t know the father I can’t make judgments and say he’s good or bad but from the clip that was shown my guess is that he would get a job as a day laborer or something, a job few Americans even glance at.
P.S either don’t smile like that, LIKE EVER or only do it if you’re trying to cast a job as the grinch

I live in the northwest part of Mexico in a rural area and in the past two to three years there has been a dramatic upscale in the amount of illegal migrants coming from the countries you mentioned but also from Haiti. The issue is something unprecedented for this part of the country because the route they used to take was up thru the east coast of the country. I really hope there can be a solution to this issue for the sake of the migrants and for the secure of all the countries involved.

You are so brave for speaking about this delicate topic in such a frank way. I'm not going to say that my home country, Mexico, is guilt-free, because it's not, but it really gets to me when American people acknowlege the role their country is playing from behind. Violence and corruption in Mexico are heavily supported by the influx of money and firearms coming from the US, their unwillingness to tackle drug demand at home and the political pressure they put on Mexican authorities to implement these quick-fixes to such complex problems. In the chaos, poor people and normal civilians are the ones to pay the toll. Anyway, I really hope more people watch this not with the proud eyes of a MAGA nationalist, but with the sympathy of a human being who's fortunate enough to sit comfortably in front of a computer, while whole families leave behind whatever few possesions they had just to survive!

My heart hurts for my people in El Salvador. Many are quick to blame immigrants, but not many know that El Salvador is at the state that it's in due to the actions of the US during the cold war. Not all, but they contributed to the mess my country is in and need to take responsibility. Also the use of drugs and the high demand they are in by Americans has ruined the lives of many latinos. When there is a high demand, there is a supply. When America fixes it's drug problem, I'm positive that organized criminal activity in Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras etc will decrease.

    • @CrimsonEclipse

I also notice the drug cartels selling drugs to others places in the world beside America. Last documentary I saw the drug cartels also sold drugs to warlords in Africa as well in exchanges for resources, and destabilizing their community as well. Also drug usages is illegal here in the US but the cartels seem to be passing the borders as well. The better question is why aren’t people from Central America campaigning for support to drive the cartel out? Why aren’t there campaigns to fight these drug dealer from people that migrant to other countries? Instead of blaming US for being indirectly at fault blame the people that left to refuse to fight back as campaign for foreign aid. Campaign to create an army train your people to take back Central America.

    • @seyi6295

We, the US, need to take a stance similar to Portugal. If we decriminalize possession and usage of drugs, put money into treatment, and only prosecute dealers, we would could reduce the population of users and therefore the demand.
Sad thing is that I think a lot of Americans are too shallow to understand that the “immigration issue” is a mess of our own making through our racist drug policy... 😒

Honestly I hate how immigration is handled in both the US and Mexico. I think that the US, Mexio and Canada need to get together in some fashion and create an immigration plan both to build up Mexico's stability and also to create safe ways for people to migrate. The truth is that even though conservatives want a wall (that requires a face palm all on its own) it won't stop the problem. Until conditions get better in Mexico and Central America the problems will continue to persist. Then again with Trump at the helm I don't expect anything to change for the better.

One solution could be a refugee camp which is policed by Americans, Canadians, and Mexicans. Which would be a safe place to stay while filling out refugee status, or immigration papers with one of three countries

    • @cheeses_fries
      @cheeses_fries 6 лет назад +7

Conditions will never improve in Central America because the people who may be capable of improving the condition are taking their knowledge/skills to a foreign nation. As a result, their home country fall into a deeper state of despair. People could stay and fight for changes in their country but they choose to run away because it's easier. The Earth does NOT have an unlimited amount of resources to accommodate everyone's needs. Each nation have a limited amount of resources and infrastructure to accommodate their citizens. These illegal immigrants are creating a larger problem for EVERYONE by increasing the consumption rate, leading to faster depletion of resources, overpopulation, higher competition, and less opportunity for the citizens of the country they are in.
Imagine you have one cake to share with everyone in your family of 8. Everyone gets a decent size slice. everyone is happy. Then words get out that your family has a delicious cake, now everyone wants a piece of it. Before you know it, there is a mob outside your door demanding a piece as well. You want to be nice so you share some with everyone. Instead of getting 1/8th, you're now getting 1/16th. Then more people learn about this and another mob come to your house. So you have to cut even smaller slices for everyone. You're now left with 1/64th of cake and a very crowded house. Then even more people come to eat your cake but there is not enough cake for everyone so now they have to compete harder to earn a smaller slice of the cake. The cake size can be ginormous, and it will still not be enough to feed everyone. There are limitations. Every nations have to look out for theirs citizens and nation best interest. Don't be naive.

Austin Reimer Whilst I agree that a safe place for refugees fleeing for their lives in Mexico would be a good idea, for a long term solution you need to fix the underlying problem in the countries they are fleeing from. This is often gang violence, weak government, corrupt officials. Having more prosperous southern neighbours would help and an infrastructure and environment where countries are policed, rule of law is enforced, and there are jobs available so that people can make lives for themselves. How to do this is very difficult, especially for the US and Mexico where it is everyone for themselves and as long as you are doing well and you live in a nice neighbourhood with enough money it doesn't matter about anyone else. Until the US wakes up and smells the coffee (no pun intended) nothing will change. During the Cold War the US meddled in South and Central America supporting corrupt regimes and have in part caused this problem. They should at least try and help fix the problem, although what is needed won't win many votes in the short term in the US, and it has got to such a level that it is going to be very difficult, because those involved in the corruption and drug trade that control these countries are doing very well thank you.

Yeah but they wouldn't even be able to. The system here is way too corrupt and also our president didn't even finish his first year of highschool. Drug lords control the government because the government get paid by them.

Actually we have to build a wall on east texas and northern california to keep americans out. Then we deport central americans that were born anywhere between Texas and California back to their country. Then we build a wall against Guatemala.

If your house is in bad shape, no roof, no doors, no paint, no toilets etc. and you are being threatened by lets say rats and stray dogs, maybe even wolves and you are poor you, will most likely not be able to afford to fix it and you will move somewhere else, somewhere BETTER, but if someone comes and helps you to fix the roof, someone else helps you to paint it, someone brings doors, someone helps you to fix the toilets etc. then rats won’t come inside, stray dogs and wolves neither so then you won’t need to move, you will stay in YOUR HOUSE, the place you know best and LOVE.

not give them money not job. give them education. you need education, max child policy, healthcare, then jobs will come. money is the root cause of all problem. why drug cartels exist? because they're poor and WANT easy money for the amount of skillsets that they have to perform other legal jobs.

As always, even though the videos are leaving out perspectives, it is good that topics like that get mentioned.
It shows quite clearly that migration politics is a tricky topic everywhere. US politicians were quite clever in outsourcing their work to Mexico; the Democrats save their valuable voters base of recent Latino immigrants while playing the savior on the surface and actually keeping out the more problematic migrants and the Republicans achieve their political goal of more militarization and therefore more contracts to the industry.
What bothers me more in the Vox videos is the naive belief that any political decision is made for humanitarian reasons. Politics at that level is never about human rights or anything like that mentioned in the video. It is about political interests and who shares them. It is about leverage and power. Those of you who watch House of Cards should know how it works.
Mexico's reason for doing something for the migrants is not only because of the US problems. People forget that drug smuggling, crime and illegal immigration are also a domestic concern for Mexican politicians. The state bordering Guatemala is one of the poorest in Mexico with the lowest level of HDI. It is considered a political and cultural outlier as it has the Zapatista movement (extreme left, while the central government leans more to the libertarian right) and is closer to the native culture of various tribes than to that of the more northern states. The various parties in government are under pressure to do something about it. Mexico gets money and military equipment from the industrious US without having the federal Mexican government to pay for the Chiapas regional government. It gets them off the unemployment problem by making the local population into a police force.

I agree with some of your points, but to think that *all* governments are unable/unwilling to make decisions regarding Human Rights is false. Europe's political class, despite all the disagreement and internal conflict, has been working for the most part to help protect immigrants. They're not very effective at it, much less efficient, but they're trying, and those decisions have also come bundled with a hefty political cost.
Unfortunately, the US government has been, for the longest time, a completely amoral political body. As you say, the decisions taken at the highest levels of American politics are weighted overwhelmingly on a cost/benefit basis and without the slightest ethical or moral regard (other than 'does this cross the line where organized resistance from citizens could be dangerous?' - which is the only thing politicians truly fear). And yeah, making Mexico do the dirty work must've been an excellent solution for both sides of the aisle.
What I really don't get is how the practical realities of employment *never* factor in the American political discourse. You people need an *ass-ton* of immigrants to operate as a society! That Mar-A-Lago employs hundreds of underpaid, overworked aliens, that that imbecile you have in the WH makes his red hats in China, and that the agricultural sector would collapse without Latinos, is never mentioned, acknowledged, or truly pondered in a serious manner at the highest levels of government.

I mean I agree that we should give more visas to immigrants, but illegal immigration is a Nono. What’s surprising is that Trump gave more visas and Obama and deported less people. Conservatives like cheap labor so could be a reason why. Who knows?
