Thank you to everybody who has supported the creation of these video and has shared this journey with my sailboat Karl with me so far. It would not have been the same without you.
This video was filmed in May 2013.
From a fan in 2020, "You've come a long way, baby", much respect and continued best wishes.
Having a daughter who has made me proud...I can be sure your father must be proud as hell of his. Now it's time to catch up this Christmas eve with more of your vid's. Good luck.
I can appreciate this story. Reminded me of my trip to Fiji from San Francisco to check out and buy a 1985 Tayana 37 with hard dingy, dive compressor and gear, off shore equipment for five people, etc. etc. the list went on and it took a week to negotiate all of the big questions like "will I have to pay 40% duty?" I never did import the boat into Fiji, but it was tricky. I took a chance, I trusted a Fijian woman at Yacht Help, and she pulled us through. I could go on for the next hour. Well, thanks for bringing back all the memories!
I'm a new subscriber to your channel; I only just found it a few hours ago and I haven't watched all of your videos yet... I already have a very large amount of respect for you! :D You are very courageous and amazing! I hope you have the best, most amazing, wonderful journey. Thank you for sharing with us! The best of luck to you and much love! :)
Hi Nike. Just found Untie The Lines! Immediately came to the 1st episode. It is sooo encouraging to see you responding to questions put here by new viewers, today. So, since I have soooo many questions, I am going to hang on to the impulse to start asking them today, believing that you might answer them as the episodes unfold. Karl looks like he was a leap of faith lol. I can't wait to see how you got him seaworthy!
go for it :) I usually get a notification about new comments on old videos, so I try to answer them if I see them.
Enjoy catching up. You might just make it in time for the start of season III :).
Ahoy, Nike & Karl
Great video I am looking forward to going through them all tonight. I truly love watching others, as they go after their dreams in life.
Really nice documentary. I look forward to seeing how things turn out. Best of luck and fair winds!
Found your videos last night and enjoyed everyone! You're a corageous woman whom I admire and for whom wish the very best. There are very few people who would do what you did-buying a boat so far away and then flying into the unknown. I live in Mobile, Alabama and sail my boat along the northern Gulf of Mexico...nothing like what you're experiencing now. Good luck and keep posting the videos...they're very entertaining and interesting.
Even viewing from December 2019, these are important historical documents! Best wishes, and safe travels.
Just found your channel ! Binge watching has begun !!
Lots of work, but always well worth it! I have no Doubt you will enjoy your boat.. Great Video!
You are very brave and have lots of courage, Good Luck with KARL.
Well presented I can only imagine what it must feel like to step onto a new boat for the first time.
Good luck with your trip!
If you dont mind me asking .. how much did your boat cost and what type / size is it ? Why did you choose panama ? To avoid having to go through the panama canal ? Did you have much sailing experience before you did this ?
Brave decision to buy a boat on the other side of the world. I'm glad it worked out ok. It's a decent size yacht and a little bit of restoration helps put a little bit of you into the boat. If you built or fixed it then you can repair it, essential for a round the world liveaboard.
Hallo, habe gerade den Yacht Artikel gelesen und freuen mich jetzt schon auf die nächsten 51 Folgen von Deinem Blog 😀
Wow, Respekt für Deine Durchhalte! 👍👍
Yeah, I have that in my list, too.
Sounds like a good plan not to have have too much of a fix plan! Enjoy :) I'll probably head west, yes, but first I need to fix some more stuff. You know what it's like...
Good for you!! You have another Follower.Looking forward to your Journey!
Very brave! I honor your sense of adventure.
You are one strong woman! I would have run away from the challenge of making that boat seaworthy! Also, I'm smiling at your impeccable English, which is better than 90 percent of folks in Illinois!
Hi +velocità, haha, belive me, I considered running away from it once or twice as well ;). But then I thought about being out there one day...and that just keep me going. And I am happy I did :)
Ahoy, Nike & Karl
I admire your courage!
Oh my !!! I cant wait to see more from you! I am on a mission as well! I have been searching patiently for "the one." I am planning on a one way adventure. Not really anything big, just want to see the world before I leave. So glad I stumbled across your page! You inspire me even more so!
good luck in finding "the one", I hope you will. For me it was more a pracitcal decision in the end. I looked at so many boats and never had "the one" feeling that so many people talk about. Maybe it was an issue about money, too. Maybe, when you look at more expensive boats, that feeling comes more easily, hehe. But I have come to love my boat anyhow, because it is mine and it gives me the possibility to follow this dream.
I am going one way, too. It won't be a circumnavigation, just go with the flow and see how far I come.
Maybe I'll see you out there someday :)
I am not looking for luxury,I am quite a simple man. I am mechanically very good.Dependable as well as reliable is all I seek. Two things I have never found in people. So what better way than to go adrift? I really do admire your courage and wish you the best of luck in your travels.Stay well and may your journey be nothing but a breeze! Until we talk again!
I admire your courage very much. 4 years in the Marines couldn't make me as tough as you are.
I dint know how i first found your channel. It was a long time ago, I feel like I was watching your early videos almost as soon as they came out. I stopped subscribing a few years ago, but recently I bought a used sailboat. I got an incredible deal, partly because I was in the right place at the right time. Only problem with this boat is it was left covered for 5 years, never opened. At least it was on the hard, but any sailboat left untouched for that long will develop mold, no question. So I've been tackling a mold problem, and earlier this evening I was thinking what a big problem I have, and I needed something to give me perspective. I thought of you and this first video which I watched so long ago, when you arrived in Panama and discovered your boat actually had coral growing inside. I watched your video again, and I feel better about the challenge ahead of me, as moldy as the interior of this boat is, yours was worse! Thanks!! PS - I developed a tremendous respect for you, your resourcefulness, your independence, your ability to meet every challenge with intelligence, strength, and determination.
Hehe, well I hope you subscribed again 😜. No, just kidding. You can do it!!! Keep at it, there will be better times ahead. By the way, my boat has been mostly mold free for the past years. Resealing the windows helped immensely and adding some new deck ventilation. Good luck with it all and don’t give up! It’s worth the effort and u will feel you accomplished sth afterwards! (Talking from own experience here as u know 🤣)
You're awesome. Way to go!!
You are a trooper! God Bless You!
This is really great, I have similar goals. Will get out there, too, as soon as possible. Thanks for sharing all the information with us, and giving tips. :)
...and did you get anywhere? probably not...
oh... wie spannend! Schön Dich gefunden zu haben :)

Can’t wait to your next update your living my dream good luck you can do it
Thanks! Same to you :). Looks like you also had quite some work to do on your boat. Where are you heading?
Way to go! Good on you.
To sail the world, the most essential thing you need is a sail boat. I found mine after three years of searching in Shelter Bay, a marina close to Colón in Panama. The first encounter with my boat was...well, a pretty moldy experience. But watch it yourself...
why were you looking for your boat in panama while living in germany...was or is there a benefit of buying the boat from there?
it was more a coincidence. A friend of mine had been there 1,5 years ago to help the previous owner to install a repaired injection pump, so he had seen the boat. And it was a bargain. About a third of the price that I would have paid in Europe.
But there are many boats around here for cheap money, also in Guatemala, I think. So it might be worth checking. Although Panama is not so recommendable for fixing, as supplies are pretty bad / expensive...
WhiteSpotPirates
Well, how much? :)
8.000€
WhiteSpotPirates Hi, great. How much have you invested till you got it running and fixed with everything working well ?? Inkluding mechanics, restauration, everything .... :)
Just subbed. Playing catch up now. Thanks for sharing...
Been through that a couple of times already in the Pacific Northwest. Once with a little Cal 2-29 and once again with an Ingrid 38. But we didn't have the heat up there. We now live in Belize. Boy Sailing After the Launch - Taking the Tiller We found this little sailing dinghy that was again - moldy - and extremely tired. The mold cleaned easily this time

Mold is the #1 enemy of wood!
Those photos are so cool!
I am having fun!
:+)
very nice video!
It took 3 years to find a junker like this??? In Florida it takes about 10 minutes.
I think her sailboat is quite rare. I believe it is an aluminum bilge keel. Not an everyday junker...more like a keeper.
So cool!!! Come to Australia and take me sailing!!😊
It's a Reinke Super 10 (Aluminium) built in Germany by a shipyard called "Gerdes". The interior was built by the first owner around 1990.
Hello yet again!
Starting to binge tonight
Very Good!!!
Just a note...Keep your life raft covered when you're not at sea. The tropical sun will
rot the neoprene or especially natural rubber (Avon). It happen to me. Luck had it that
I didn't need it but just food for thought. Love your adventure. We did the same. Regards,
Norm on "Monte Cresto".
You've come a long way from there. We'll done.
Happy anniversary! Aug 29, 2020
What did you use to address the mold situation?
You changed a lot, You looked cute haha
You are doing good in life.
The wind and the waves are always on the side of the ablest navigator.
WOW...She was really growing, did you buy this boat sight unseen? Well I did the same thing too, and it needed everything.
I was googling keel bolts and the lead ballast joint for a 1961 sailboat. Then somehow RUclips thought I would be interested in your video. How did Google/RUclips figure that out? But they are right!
Wow gutsy to take on a boat in such condition...
super find ich klasse!
Wow just Wow.
Wow 🤣😂🤣👍🏼💙 brave! This boat has definitely been submerged at some point! Probably due to sinking in a hurricane at one time but you’ve come a long way lady!
I'm going through a very similar situation. I'm glad I found the channel. I thought I might make a channel of my own as well, to document the experience.
go for it! i think I will as well when i finally get my boat.
wow you really exemplified the sales term "AS IS". Everyone before you said "F THAT" I have no doubt...
I admire your get up and go. I also have bought an old boat (1942 ketch) and am doing it up with the help of some fantastic craftsmen. (OK: they're doing 98% of it) but even though it will cost more than it is worth it is worth it to me. Stuff the smug naysayers; they really don't have a clue.
And "worth" is such a personal perception anyhow. What's one person's scrap might be someone else's gold 😊. Good luck with ur project🖒
@@WhiteSpotPirates Time is the only thing that is "worth" anything. You are spending yours wisely and with gusto. My wife and I cruised full time for 8 years and loved it. Our motto: "We find, that life is dull and boring..............primarily, for dull and boring people."

Just found your channel and I'm already addicted :-)
I will watch all your clips...
What a change uve gone thru.
Brave, riprese molto belle.
super cute !
Best to shop for used/abandoned boat in in colder climate--especially, more so than Panama!
Buy a fresh water boat from the Great lakes . Short season so they only see the water for about 5 months , then haul out every single year . Means a bottom inspection and repair if needed as it is not out of sight . Weaker sun too so less UV damage .
Not to forget fresh water , rigs never wear out , things don't rust like on salt water so the engine and sail drives do not corrode as bad . Little crevice corrosion too.
@@faircompetition1203 ahhh, not a bad idea!!!
You brought the boat sight unseen?
Schade...aber das Boot ist toll. Gute Reise!
Hope she got it real cheap. I've bought boat like that and basically it becomes a full rebuild.
How long was the boat moored for in that harbor?
It was neglected for about 5 years.Ahoy, Nike & Karl
I bless you & your YT Channel. "Love & Above"
Moin, ist ja schon ein bischen her und der Schimmel ist ja mal heftig brrr, schön das Du das durchgezogen hast! ... kommst Du aus Hamburg?

It‘s a Reinke... classy!
Hi ! First of all, forgive my lousy english, it's not my primary language. I just found your youtube channel and, so far, I think it will be very interesting to follow your adventures with your "new" boat. My first question is... do you know that certain kinds of mold (particulary wood molds) are very toxic for your health (particulary in sutch a confine environment) and are impossible to erradicate ? Did you do some researches about that subject to orient you next decisions on what you intend to do for the refit of your boat ? It would be so sad to loose your health while pursuing your dreams.
Well, I will immediately go see the rest of your videos. Maybe there is an answer for my questions already.
So this seems to be ur first comment. It's kinda funny cause I read them backwards. Yes, I know about the mold issue. I hope my mom did not read ur comment...;). As far as I know it's the black mold that is very nasty.
It is extremely hard to keep mold out of a boat. unless u have aircon which is not my style nor budget. There are so many things to worry about. Sometimes I like to neglect some of them. When I am on the boat, there is usually a good airflow and Karl does not get any new mold. When he is closed up for longer it sure can get a bit...jungly ;) It never got as bad as it was in the beginning and I did try to get rid of most of it...
That's all I can say really. Yes, you can call me ignorant, I will accept it ;)
What kind of boat is Karl, who built him?
Good luck.
wow that was some mold . However mold wont kill a boat . Good luck with the sailing
that was some mold indeed. And you are right, it did not kill the boat. After resealing the windows and installing some new solar vents, the mold issue was totally under control. I think it was more of the shock that got me because the boat was VERY different than on the pictures I had seen previously ;)
@Stanley Burgess Despite your 40 years of experience you missed that my boat is aluminum, not fiber glass...so osmosis is highly unlikely ;). And it can be fixed...it's just a lot of work...But in my case not relevant, because I have a metal boat.
Wow, has it really been more than 7 years?
Hi. Just found your videos and facebook page. This looks like a good video diary of your exploits but could you tell us a little bit more about yourself? What's your name, how old are you, what did you do for a living, when did you learn to sail and how long have you had this calling to sail around the world? Thanks:-)
If you going to leave your boat for a season spray everywhere inside with a mixture of cinnamon and water shaken up. Mold wont grow on it.
Great recipe
Did you see pictures before you bought it! How did the seller make the sale? Did he/she just lie to you?
what kind of boat ,year ,how long ?
It's a german boat, built after the plans of a guy called Reinke. The model is a Reinke Super 10, made from aluminium, built in 1992. It's 11,2m total lenght.
you will gonna love this woman.. courageous........
Four years have now passed and I'm amazed at the transformation of your face. Quite the lean, mean sailor.
John Southworth five years! Well, it’s called getting older 🤣
The only moldy boat you could find was half way around the world in Panama? There was absolutely no sail boats for sale in Europe? How crazy is that. ?
I was thinking the same thing...
Of course there were boats in Europe. I had looked for boats for some 3 years. Most of them were 30k upward. This one was 8k. Sure I could have found a different mouldy boat in the Caribbean. This boat got "recommended" to me by a friend cause he knew the owners.
Back then, I had no experience of looking for a boat. I would surely do some things differently if I had to do it all over again...The decision did save me a lot of money in the purchase but surely cost some money and nerves in the long run. Fact is: I wanted to get going and I did not want to go back home and keep on looking...
Here's a video on why / how I bought the boat ruclips.net/video/w0PpT8jEatc/видео.html
um what's your name?
wow
You went all the way across the Atlantic to Panama to buy a moldy boat?
exactly ;). Except that I did not know it was moldy since the pictures I had seen were obviously nothing like the boat I found when I got there. I had looked at various boats in Europe that were in better shape...but all 30k upwards. This one was at 10k and was the boat of a friend's friends...So I gave it a shot. When I got there and saw the disaster, of course, I could have turned around and gone back. But the fact is that I badly wanted to get going and the 8k that we agreed on did not sound too bad, even considering that I had to invest more money to get the boat going.
Yes, you can argue that I spent 30k in the end to have the boat in a better condition, so why not spend 30k in the first place. Well, with the money I spent on fixing the boat, I also learned a ton about boat repair, which I otherwise would not have. Would I do it again? Probably not. But after fixing up this boat, I already know a ton more about boat repair, so I don't need to go through that initial learning curve anymore.
Also, I think it is a question about what you have more of: time or money. I had a lot more time than money. If you have more money but let's say only 2 years time and want to circumnavigate...of course this would not be a clever way to start. In the end, it's a very personal decision that is based your own priorities.
@@WhiteSpotPirates Thanks for your extremely detailed reply. As you say, it comes down to personal choices. You don't get much for £8k in UK. It just seemed like one helluva gamble buying that far from home. I've come across too many examples (some personal) of boats that weren't there, or were security on a loan, or happened to be someone else's, or whatever, to make such a gamble. But you made out okay and that's the main thing.
@@WhiteSpotPirates You give such kind and well thought out responses.
Why did you buy your boat in Panama? I once thought it would be wise to buy a boat on the Pacific side of the Canal to avoid the cost and hassle of going through the canal.I enjoyed your first video.
Hi Michael,
welcome to Untie The Lines, I am happy you liked the first episode :). you can find a bit about the story on how I found my boat Karl in this video ruclips.net/video/w0PpT8jEatc/видео.html. There are usally more boats for sale in general on the Atlantic side, I'd say. People often cross the Atlantic and then just don't want to carry on or sail down, spend some time in the Caribbean and just want to sell the boat.
Also, I would say that for "grooving in", the caribbean is a nice place...you have many stops, many not too expensive countries (if you stay a bit more westerly ;)) and it's not too bad for refit, either. Now, if you are not interested in sailing the caribbean, then I guess you are better off to buy your boat on the Pacific side, not to have the costs of crossing :). It all depends on what boat you are looking for, where you want to travel etc. There is hardly ever a "right" or "wrong" in cruising. More just the typical "it depends" ;).
Going through the Canal is not such a hassle, actually. I found it quite an exciting trip and a great event in my journey. Yes, it's not cheap...but I am very glad I had the time that I spent in the Caribbean before going through. So for me, it was the right decision and there are no regrets :)
Ahoy, Nike & Karl
Hi Nike,
Thanks for taking the time to answer my question so thoroughly. I'll be watching more of your adventures in the future.
Michael
Hmm so that was the first one i think you are a bit like me i get attached to thing's old cars truck's boats motor cycles they all have names and are like my family
muito bom seus videos,e um prazer conhecer uma mulher maravilhosa assim como voce, ainda verei pessoalmente, abraços.
It always ends in disaster when you buy a cheap boat in another country & your inexperienced. If you've learnt nothing from this calamity, you'll never learn anything. Spend more money & get more boat...............it's as simple as that!
Did you buy the Boat, without looking at it, or getting a Survey ?
Martin Sims i did look at it but no, no professional survey. You can find out more here ruclips.net/video/w0PpT8jEatc/видео.html
How does it feels now, sailing for 5 years ?))
Tttt Tttt I’ve been living on board for seven years now and it still feels pretty darn awesome. Many things have become a lot easier over time, some I am still struggling with...but all in all it’s a great experience and the best decision of my life!
How much did you pay for your boat?
Isa Walter 8k €
@Whitespotpirates; Danke für Infos; Wie gehts jetzt wohl weiter mit "Karl" ?? Beste Grüsse aus Norddeutschland;
Hi, l was surprised that it took you three years to select a boat. Why did it take so long, what did you consider and what did you reject? Also, I'm utterly shocked that you would buy a boat that is Panama but that you have not yet seen, not even photographs. If you went to a German marina you would discover mold far sooner.
Don't get me wrong. I admire your courage and abilities, I just feel it was so impractical.
I was looking at very different types of boats in the beginning and then I decided for metal at one point cause of better protection from collision. And after some more time, I had decided to go for a Reinke cause I liked their twin keels and the fact, that they are built like a tank and very solid.
Oh, I did see pictures of the boat, but they were just not as recent as they should have been. And I did not buy the boat before I had seen it and checked a couple of things, e.g. that the engine was running. I know I should have hauled it out before the purchase...but well, no use to cry about spilt milk. I know that there is heaps of boats in Europe, I went all over the place to look but never found the right one for the right price. This one was a bargain and I also liked the idea of starting in the Caribbean so it would be warm for the refit.
I thought my boat was bad for mold.
S is for !!!!!
Subbed, #Suburban Delinquent sent me
Did you rename the early videos? Pretty sure this used to be called "The jungle of Mold"
🤣 yes, you are VERY correct, that’s what it was called. I am impressed that you remember this. Well you might also remember that I had an injury and was forced to spend three months in bed…when I first started vlogging, I did not know anything about the algorithm and even once I found out, I sort of ignored it. Guess I didn’t wanna play the game. But then…well, I did get curious and I did have a lot of time to spend without being able to move. So I started renaming some old videos. And go figure, in those months, my views exploded and I made like 1.800$ just on RUclips views…for two months…and then it went back to like 200-300$ 🤣🤣🤣 but anyhow, that’s how this video got renamed.
I also tried to make it easier to see what season / episode one is at. So it was not just driven by thirst for money but also trying to give people an easier way to find their way around the episodes. Which I guess in the long run might lead to more views so scratch that, it’s all just for the money 🤣.
No, but on a serious note, I try to stay true to myself with the content that I do, but I also need to make a living, so I did start to adjust my titles and thumbs a bit to please the algorithm. I’ve got a furry mouth to feed now, so I blame it on Boga 🐾🤣.
Thanks for watching!
@@WhiteSpotPirates No worries, it was still quite close to the truth. Funny how people are drawn in buy those keywords. I did have some mold issue on my previous boat but not as bad as "The Jungle of mold" so it was kind of a measurement stick :-) Yes, I have been watching from the very beginning and followed your example, on a smaller scale. I have a 12m steel ketch and I am living aboard in the Rotterdam Marina for the past 5 years. Love the (financial) freedom it brings and doing the upkeep is a lot of fun too. Untying the line's has proven to be the hardest part :-) Well who knows... maybe next year.
@@Nerd3927 that’s great to hear, congrats on the boat and moving aboard. And don’t worry, the moment will come when it’s right for u to untie those lines. And maybe it never will be the right moment then that’s fine, too.
