    Ahoy everyone!
My name is Nike and I have been living and sailing on my sailboat Karl since 2013. After a massive refit marathon, I finally cast off the lines and learnt to solo sail my 37-foot Reinke Super 10 that I called "Karl". I am publishing videos (at the moment every two weeks) about the ups and downs of living, repairing and sailing my boat.
Since January 2022, I have a new permanent crew member: my furry friend Boga. When I started out, I did not know much about boat repair or solo sailing. Since I am still out there, I hope that my story inspires others, to chase their dreams, even if they might think they are not cut out for it. There is always a way, so I'll see you out there!

I remember you saying, "I won't say I bought the worst boat in the marina. But definitely the second worst." And the video with you crying and saying you were thinking about quitting was tough. I am happy that you continued and am very proud that you are still sailing. You've developed into quite the beautiful self-confident and self-reliant woman that you are today. My offer to crew for you still stands. But I won't be available until late summer as I'm headed to Europe in April for several months. Karl is very lucky to have you as captain. Hugs from Texas!

I also have my 20L heater tank plumed in as a backup source of clean fuel. That heater tank is only filled from the main bunkers via the Delpi 296 filter with water separator.

(I know that as I write this you are already in Mexico, can't wait to see the video of the exit over the bar from the anchorage in El Salvador).

    Nike,
I know that you had to do extra work and lost some money, but I view it as an extra layer of safety. I used to view being delayed with irritation, until one day that I had to go to a gas station to use the restroom instead of continuing on my trip. When I got back on the highway the traffic was lined up for miles, there had been a terrible accident. I thought for a moment and said, " Thank you LORD." I realized that had I continued instead of stopping then I may have been in the accident. I have never questioned any type of delay since.
You should be glad that you are well assured that your fuel tank is extra clean and that you can be worry free about it for some time. I would run the engine for awhile before attempting your exit out to sea, just to make sure the lines are clean. Thank you for sharing. Safe travels.
    Cheer,,!
    Blue Skies and Fair Winds.
    Faithfully,
    James

In my limited experience, it's always the "simple cleaning" jobs that snowball into massive undertakings more often than not. I'll be doing something and think well, while I'm in here, I may as well clean this or that, which then goes wrong and turns into a massive saga that never would have arisen if I hadn't tried to be proactive. Whenever I get that urge these days, I remind myself of the "if it's not broken, don't fix it" mantra instead ;)

The algae do not like copper. A brass strainer over the pickup would make a difference. Just a small piece of brass screen, tied on with a copper wire, will help. Learnt that from owning a diesel Volkswagen back then. I also have a funnel with a fine mesh filter which filters out water. It was sold as Mr Funnel some years ago. It also filters out dog hair from engine oil. Don't ask.

Never borrow canisters for fuel, even not from yourself! It is one of your diesel canisters or not, nothing in between. Use a piece of transparent pipe, better a funnel with a sieve to fill the tank and keep an eye on it. Let install a second outlet with pipe and filter to the motor from the fueltank so you can switch between them or pump the whole fuel through the filter during a rolly trip. With that you only have to change the filter instead of cleaning the whole tank and you can flush or bypass the other pipe. Water will be at the bottom of the tank because water is heavier than diesel. On a calm day and the boat balanced to get the deepest point under the intake strainer the motor will stuck on water. At that point you can pump out the water until fuel appears. Use transparent pipe sections so you can see when the color changes or bubbles appear. Coolant liquid, other oily fluids or cleanser and plant protection products are not so easy to handle but also does appear in jerrycans. Shit happens. Take care, there are liquids in jerrycans that can sink an aluminum boat over night. And always check the tank vent valve wherever it is located.

  • @runristaren2
    @runristaren2 5 месяцев назад +1

Having a fuelpolish pump installed can be a great thing when not using a lot of fuel regulary. A pump some easy to replace filters and waterseparator in a line back to the fueltank
Carl is probably not spacious enough to have a daytank but that could also be a thing to secure having a clean tank of fuel going to the engine.

Nike, you (and Paul) are stunning! Tanks look pristine. You accomplished the modern equivalent of "paying the devil". Job well done. Great video! Next time...

Well that’s one lesson you’ll NEVER repeat. Though I do think Paul should have told you that he used the can for bilge water. Be well, stay safe. Cheers 🍻

I sure hope not to do that again. Whereas I have to strongly disagree about this having anýthing to do with Paul...I was the one borrowing the cans, so I should have checked them and I missed to do that. Zero of this is on Paul...he was the sweetest helping me to fix this mishap, so all I feel is gratefulness towards him.

Loving your videos Nike. Been following for some years now. While you were berating your bad luck what was actually happening was such good luck. Just think what would have happened if you hadn’t realised that you had contaminated all your diesel.

well I do agree that all of the toubles I went through always were a good life lesson. It sure would have been not so grand if I had not realized the contamination. But I do believe, maybe it would have been a bit more luck if I had realized the contamination whilst it was still in Paul`s jerry can 🤣🤣🤣

What fun, lol! But much better to be safe than shipwrecked... I've seen many different designs for polishing circuits, on board. Have you contemplated adding one to Karl? (Being a Great Lakes sailor, we have a little different climate & fresh water, lol). But have seen many issues with boats out on the hard too long, or untreated fuel, can still be an issue... Fair Winds, & Thanx !

On another note we all make mistakes, I accidentally put gasoline in my tank from my dingy years ago! I’ve never done that again cause I always filter my diesel cause while I’m in INDONESIA, I have no choice! Diesel here is so damn dirty, can’t wait to get back over to Thailand and Australia where the Diesel is clean! Fair Winds Nike

Hi, I had this problem years ago. I have since regularly used enzyme based fuel treatments.
they work pretty well. but you need to have spare filters since they break up the algae and it clogs the filters. So I treat and run and then change filters.

It's always easier to watch someone else do the dirty work, hopefully we learn from others mistakes to never take anything for granted, although during my long life it was usually my mistakes... The much larger boats have diesel oil purifiers, as we did back in the 1960s, so dealing with contaminated fuel is normal... Glad you got through all that in a safe harbor, shout out to Paul, I've been really enjoying his channel and I hope more of your followers check him out... scratch Boga's ears for me...

Well, u don’t HAVE to do it…if u don’t want to, that’s fine, too. I think that’s important to leave that door open, too. But if you WANT to, then there are certain things that help to fight through the pre-departure anxiety. It helps me to sit down and walk through the things that I am worried about explicitly to see which ones of them I might be able to eliminate one way or another. Being kind to myself and accepting my limitations also helps. Althogh I find that quite hard ☺️. But feeling that I HAVE to do sth or beating myself up for not being brave enough usually does not help me much in the process.
I hope that you will be able to listen to what your boat and urself are trying to tell you and find a way to walk forward whichever direction that might be 🧘🏼‍♀️

@@WhiteSpotPirates Nike... many thanks for taking the time to reply you obviously busy doing your thing! My drive to sail solo is to test myself, to truly find my edge..without ego or proving to others..However this comes with finding that discomfort .
I heard it said solo sailing is 90% mental and 10% physical and I know this to be true.
Many solo sailors ...serious soloists, have encouraged me, and I have come a long way since I started but one beast i face is my first serious gale or storm...ask any sailor and they wiell probably agree... for me its become a huge mental barrier..played over again and again in my mind... I get you can plan, forecasting is good. My fear relates to being offshore getting what your given...(a good friend once said, Rich, don't worry about storms, they will find you!)
I guess this boils down to ones relationship with death (not dramatising...you probably get it) but this is the passage to finding your edge.?
I will continue with Seawitch (36ft 1964 Buchanan Dutch built steel yawl) from Portugal further south shortly.. hopefully Posiden will be kind and teach me gently...
Nike... not bigging you up, but huge respect to you
      Fair winds and following seas

Did you think about rubbing alcohol. It combines with the water and you can run. It works on my tractors and semi Truck. Crazy not to have a water trap or filter. Inside of tank makes its own water from heat and cold.
