I just switched from an dslr 📷because u get a really great image with an iphone without playing around with shutter iso aperture and dont have to spent hundreds of $/€ in better lenses. 💲Also, my opinion, the iphone work so much better in low light conditions. You dont need 3 big lights to burn your eyelight, just take some decent lights and the image looks fine. So thank you again, seeing forward to upgrade my iphone 13 to the 15 pro soon! 😃
For power from the wall? You can purchase 3 meter 100W PD & Data (10Gbps) and add 6.6foot USB C extension cord to your USB C hub. With the USB C hub I have, with 4 USB C 10Gbps and a PD port, no issues running the 15 Pro (no Dropped frames or freezing up). Also, USB C Lavalier Lapel mic, that I used in my testing.
My rig keeps dropping frames on my ssd why? And what hub did you try? Could it be my usb c hub? If I use black magic camera it doesn’t even show the ssd.

Excellent information. I have a question. I duplicated your setup purchasing all the same items. I have a couple problems one the video HDMI cable into the hub interferes with the holder. I’ve looked everywhere for a setting to change and rotate that image but it won’t. Did you have an issue with this and how did you solve it?
Great job covering the options, I love the set lighting. I did have a couple different detail questions. 1: I was wondering what is the mount holding the USB-C hub that you were using. I haven't been able to find one for that purpose. and 2: Is the Blackmagic iPhone app (which I love but is still pretty new to me) able to take in multiple USB-C audio inputs and put each on it's own separate channel (1 or 2)? As in, one channel recording a handheld or lav mic and another a nat sound mic like a usb shotgun? I'm trying find out more before buying the wrong gear.

Super helpful video thank you! Clarifying question - I want to share my iPhones screen live (not recorded video) while I’m using an audio interface in GarageBand. I was thinking of using an hdmi adapter+capture card to OBS for “see” what I’m doing live, and the output of my audio interface through another one for it to hear my phone. Another USB-C hub that I've used with my iPhone for recording that has HDMI is the UGREEN Revodok Pro 109. That one has also worked well for me and has good transfer speeds and HDMI output.
Hi there! I'm struggling to get stereo audio recorded via my audio interface, into the Camera app on my iPhone 15 Pro. It's in stereo if I go into GarageBand, but it's panned hard left in both the Camera & Voice Memo apps. Is this something you'e experienced? I want to make recorded videos for now, but at some point would like to livestream, so I'm not sure trying a camera app from the app store will be a good idea, as surely TikTok or Insta etc use the internal video system. Any help MUCH appreciated!!
Thanks! The main thing is just that the bandwidth available is going to be shared by all the devices that you connect. That being said, 5Gbps bandwidth is 5,000Mbps/sec and that should still be plenty to record externally and still connect other devices as needed. Even high quality video codecs including 4:2:2 10-bit usually encode at rates between 150 and 200 Mbps, so there would still be plenty of bandwidth leftover. I personally just like to be maxed out when possible but if your hub supports 5Gbps speeds that should be plenty.
Great video and similar to the set up I’m piecing together. I’ve got a field monitor now but am still working out the best hdmi cable for this set up. What is the cable you’re using as you didn’t mention it in your video. Thanks
Thanks! The HDMI cable I was using is from ZILR bought at B&H Photo but unfortunately I've heard newer ones are not as reliable as the older ones from a couple years ago. But a similar cable that I also have that works great is the SmallRig ultra-thin cable. They have a couple options of shorter lengths that are great for running from a camera to monitor and they're not bulky or overpriced. www.amazon.com/SmallRig-Flexible-Supports-Ethernet-Camcorder/dp/B08LYST3GK
Hi there. wow...quite a rig! I just got my 15pro max and I want a small shot gun mic for the phone. I have a Rode Videomicro and I wonder if all I need is a 3.5mm to USB-C adapter to make it work with the iphone.Previously this mic would get power directly from my sony FX30-will it get power from the phone? .Or do you know of any compact shot gun mic similar in size to the videomicro that already has a USB-C connector? trying to avoid using dongles and extra cables...thanks so much for your videos. Always awesome!
Thank you! A 3.5mm to USB adapter may work, but I will need to test it out myself to be sure. When plugged into a hub, I'm not sure if the iPhone will identify that you're connecting an audio device or not because of the adapter. I should be able to test that out though, I just have to find my adapter. I do know the Rode VideoMic GO II works well and has the built-in USB-C output. It actually sounds much better over the USB output than 3.5mm as well - I actually have a video about that because the sound is so different from the two outputs.
thanks! I also found a similar mic to the Rode- The comica VM10 PRO Camera Microphone Dual-Mode USB Shotgun Microphone-I will give it a try and if it doesn't sound good enough then I will try buying a VideoMic Go II- I prefer NOT to use adapters/dongles etc @@semiprotech
So, how long can this set of equipment record without dropping frames when capturing video and audio to the storage card while connecting to an HDMI display? Can it sustain recording 4K30 frames for one hour without issues?
Indoors I do not use any filters or special lenses on the iPhone. I did recently get a Polar Pro phone case with the adapter to hold a 67mm lens filter because I have a variable ND filter in that size for my other cameras. I haven't had time to test it out yet, but it does fit inside the smallrig cage without causing any issues.
@@semiprotechmy biggest concern with the moment universal adaptor, the one where you tighten and twist on the back onto the screen and holds a lens in place is just how sturdy that actually is if the phone is moving. Smallrig had a magsafe one for the 14 pro max but since discontinued. And I don’t really wanna spend the money on a case that I wouldn’t use everyday I feel like removing my case for the case with lens every time I want to record is a hassle. A MagSafe ring with a lens attachment just is so much easier. Saw a diy video on something like this that I’ll probably end up doing as it’s 10x cheaper than any case and seems more sturdy and easier to use than the screw on universal lens mounts that moment and I think samdmarc have.
The iPhone 14 Pro's lightning port doesn't have the same bandwidth as the 15's USB-C port, so a hub with multiple devices connected might be too much for it to handle (or recognize) and I don't believe an external monitor would work hardwired - though you could screen mirror to an iPad or Mac if you have one. You definitely can connect an external microphone with a lightning to USB adapter though, I did that many times with my 14 Pro before I had the 15.
Appreciate all this info. You didn’t go into detail about the monitoring. I am using an iPhone 15 Pro Max and a fast usb-c hub with the Black Magic camera app. I have a usb-c to HDMI connector but was not able to get my 7” field monitor to work. Any advice?
Have you tried connecting the USB-C to HDMI cable directly into your iPhone? If that works, then it's possible your hub's USB-C port doesn't support display output over USB.
@@semiprotech Thanks so much for the quick reply! Yes with a usb-c to hdmi adapter monitoring works directly out of my Iphone 15 so it must be as you suggest the hub I got dose not support this. I think I will invest in the hub you are using which has an hdmi out built in. Also, have you recorded to SD cards through this hub? Thanks again for your generous advice.
@@flipout50 Yes I have! I used a V60 SD card and did not have a problem recording 4K 24fps using the hub's SD card slot. I would go for a V90 card if you plan to record in 4K 60fps though.
@SemiPro .. I used your links to pretty much buy your entire setup and I have a question. I am stuck at how to place the Ulanzi ST-03 that holds the USB-C hub on the cage. I know on one side the 5.5 friction arm holds it .. but how is it connected to the rig? or is the friction arm the only thing holding it into place?
@@semiprotech ahhhhh ok ok... So the only thing holding it in place is the friction arm.. got it.. thanks alot .. I appreciate it.. especially your set up..
@@semiprotech This is giving me issues like crazy .. I attached one end to the mounting point on the cage and the other to the ST-03.. but the end of the that is screwed into the ST-03 is floppy and just hangs .. The knob is turned as tight as it can be and it is still floppy and hangs..
It would depend on a couple of things: if you already have the iPhone 15 Pro/Max because you just wanted that phone, then the cost of the additional setup is definitely less than a camera and lens. Also if you want 10-bit color which you get with ProRes Apple Log, then a mirrorless camera + lens is not likely going to be cheaper because the affordable models are likely going to have 8-bit color for video (out of the a6XXX line, only the most recent a6700 has 10-bit color). If you're ok with 8-bit color, then something like a Sony ZV-E10 ($698) plus a cheaper lens may come out less than the iPhone. I personally would recommend having a dedicated camera if you want to learn and expand your creative work, but if you've already got an iPhone 15 Pro/Max or are planning to get one regardless, it's a great way to get started. I would also point out that out of the gear I used, only the smartphone cage would not be useful if you get a camera eventually - everything else is still useful to have and can continue to be part of your setup in some way.
Did you film this video with your iPhone? If so, how did you accomplish the shallow DOF? Is it just lighting and post? Or do you have a special lens attached? Either way, if this was filmed on your iPhone, bravo!
Did you format your ssd to Mac OS journalized extended or leave it as ex fat. Black magic camera is not showing my T7 and native camera app is recording slowed footage on the ssd z lastly where do you find the audio setting to control gain on black magic?
I formatted the SSD to APFS before using it with the iPhone and have not had any issues. For the audio control, you first have to go into the audio settings and select the external microphone. Then back in the camera view, tap on the audio meter an you should see the gain slider in the pop-up view.

What about the m 2 SSD by smallrig
Great video
@@semiprotech Thank you!
my iphone 15 pro max says that it cannot use the accessory (monitor) because it’s too much power. any help?
You have to connect the monitor to an external battery pack
Wow, didn’t realize you could connect a mouse
I have one end of the friction arm screwed into a 1/4" mounting point on the side of the camera cage, and then the ST-03 screwed onto the other end.
Isn’t it cheaper to get a sony a series camera, lens for your RUclips setup
Now you just need to add a magsafe cooler to the iphone to keep it cool while recording
Great video! What mounts do you use to hold the USB-C Hub?
Thanks! To hold the hub, I'm using an Ulanzi ST-03 smartphone mount connected to a SmallRig 5.5 inch magic friction arm.

Now i am confused alot
