  • The Bachfest Leipzig is marking a special anniversary in 2023: In the year 1723, so exactly 300 years ago, Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) took up his post as cantor of St. Thomas Church in the Saxon city. His job involved planning the music for worship in several churches on around 60 days of the year, as well as teaching pupils at the St. Thomas School. To accomplish this mammoth task, Bach composed cantatas at a rate of almost one a week during his first year in office alone. The compositions, which later became known as Bach’s “first cantata cycle in Leipzig,” not only astonished his contemporaries but continue to delight people to this day. These compositions are extraordinary not only for their diversity but also for the way in which Bach reworked traditional musical forms and expanded the genre into new creative terrain - all in the space of one year between 1723 and 1724. Despite their technical challenges, these cantatas are among the Baroque composer’s most popular and frequently performed works.
Philippe Herreweghe, one of the few star conductors for early music, has chosen four cantatas from Bach’s first cantata year in Leipzig, which Bach composed specifically for his Leipzig ensemble and performed between New Year’s Day and the Feat of Epiphany in 1724. Herreweghe is conducting his world-famous ensemble, Collegium Vocale Gent, in the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.
    At a glance:
    (00:00) Opening
(00:58) Welcome of conductor Philippe Herreweghe and the Collegium Vocale Gent by Michael Maul, artistic director of the Bachfest Leipzig
(01:36) Interview with Philippe Herrewege on the four Bach cantatas
(15:14) Sie werden aus Saba alle kommen, BWV 65 (They will all come forth out of Sheba)
(30:32) Herr, wie du willt, so schicks mit mir, BWV 73 (Lord, as you will, so let it be done with me)
(45:23) Jesus schläft, was soll ich hoffen, BWV 81 (Jesus sleeps, what shall I hope for?)

The internationally renowned conductor and Bach expert Philippe Herreweghe founded the Collegium Vocale Gent in 1970. Together they perform early music as a kind of historical performance practice. In 1989, the vocal ensemble was expanded to include an orchestra made up of first-class international performers of Baroque music. With the Collegium Vocale Gent choir and orchestra, Herreweghe has since produced landmark early music recordings, including the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The Cantatas offer special solace from my works weariness. There so much to enjoy and embrace in their messages and sentiments. The soloists and choir are every match to the instrumentals. I love their voices and articulation. The harmonies and blend but natural and perfect My German is very first year elementary, yet each word is clear to my Anglophone ears. Lovely ❤️ ❤❤

Since the early 80's, with his Harmonia Mundi recordings, Philippe Herreweghe is for me the greatest interpreter of Bach's vocal music. Such grace! Such understanding of the text! Such beauty in the musical flow!

I totally agree. His interpretations are pure gold. I was at work in a hospital and I would try to get people into them. I told a nurse I would lend her a selection, and she forgot. I found her in a room with a patient. I was like, "Hey, you forgot the cds!" "What cds?" "The Herreweghe cds." The patient springs up in the bed. "What!? What did you say?" "I was going to lend her some cds from Phillipe Herreweghe." "OMG, he is my Son in Law!" He's from Europe, and we are in Montreal. Now it's my turn. "OMG, I love this guy! What are the chances!" "Yes', he said," You have never seen a man work harder. He stays up late studying every night. He is a Medical Doctor, a Psychiatrist and on the side, he formed a Chorale Ensemble.' He was just beaming with pride. "I am shocked that you know him here." "I'm not." I said. "Greatness has a way of becoming known" What a man!
I can only imagine some pharmacist, "I'm going to have to call the doctor... I'm not sure if we carry BWV 243!"

"Will ye shall not unless God (Nature) wills, the Lord of all being." The natural contentment, tranquility and exultation Bach's music reflects come from righteousness, from the good eternal soul that seeks to be one with God's will and not one's own frequently divisive will. Thanks to all the fine artists ... Nothing reflects eternal beauty and drama more than the human voice, especially in a choir. 🎉🎉🎉

Herreweghe is a lovely man. I was involved in conferring an Honorary Doctorate on him in 1993 when I was a guest of the Leuven faculty. Chatting with him many years later after a concert he gave here is Tokyo (notable for Stravinsky’s Mass, haunting music with archaic Greek and Venetian resonances) I mischievously told him that the last time I met him was when conferring a Doctorate on him in Leuven-he nearly fainted!

We were there, on June 10, 2023, in Thomaskirche. The only stain on that wonderful concert (like the one conducted by Rudolf Lutz two days earlier in Nikolaikirche or the incredible vision of the Mass in B minor directed by Masaaki Suzuki as the festival's closing) is that I still don't see the need for Herreweghe to make comparisons (minute 13:04) between Bach and Handel (born very close, in Halle), literally saying that Handel is "shallow" and that he is "not one of his favorite composers." It's superfluous, and it's not at all understandable in the mouth of a musician like Herreweghe.
