Another really amazing aspect about Sonny is how accessible he is. In 2016, he did a little show in Portland, OR. After the show, he came out to shake hands, sign CDs, and pose for photos with fans. And that is how I got one with him. What a remarkable individual!
With all due respect to Ry & Derek, I've maintained for a few decades now, that Sonny is the absolute master of blues based, electric slide guitar...this is a prime example, he takes it to other places, covering so many other facets, genres & styles. His Louisiana upbringing gave him a distinct advantage, growing up in such a diverse gumbo of music...it's in his very DNA👍 🇨🇦
What an incredible honored and honorable person. Met him once. Knew me from reputation. Humble / talented /VERY GENEROUS in spirit. I hung on every note he played. Sincerity / uplifting. Real. Thanks fror the love and positivity in all the the notes you play.. Can't say enough re my appreciation.
If there is one player that rivals Beck's intonation and expressiveness on the guitar that guy is Sonny Landreth! Thank you for this beautiful rendition.
There are too many twits out there, from all walks of Life, who are always offering a "Master Class" for this and a "Master Class" for that. Pay attention-This is an actual Master. Know why? I've heard him interviewed before and he never fails to mention in one way or another that he considers himself a Lifelong STUDENT of music and the guitar.
Once I overcame the cognitive dissonance of an electric slide solo alongside Bach's church music I was blown away! Would love to hear more musicians take on this challenge. Go Sonny!
@@JDubzDrumz Sonny is one of my all-time faves as well, although I've had the chance to see him only a handful of times. The last was at a little brewpub here in Northern California, and he was as you said, super nice and super humble. Never saw him play acoustic before, and it was a treat.
If this doesn’t absolutely impress you,, then you and I could never be friends.. Sonny coming to St. Louis in December Can not wait. From 2010?! I can't believe I've never seen footage of this before, I thought it was really well done. There have been a few electric guitarists take that sound in to the orchestral realm, but it doesn't always work. I thought Sonny was great here, obviously totally different to anything he normally plays and must've been bricking it on the inside!
Bach once happened to sit at a fortepiano, played a few chords, and declared that he didn't like that instrument at all. Which means that he wrote his scores precisely for the instruments he had in mind, and wanted them to be played with those instruments. And I agree with him, even though his music is to such a point absolute that it might be played even with an ocarine or a pan flute.
This is why Mr. Landreth is Eric Clapton's guitar hero and mine included. Boy your in for a treat if you have not heard "Spider gris" it's a original Master piece
You realize that Sonny played that without sheet music in front of him like all the orchestra members had? Maybe I missed it but I didn't see any. True musical genius.
it’s usual in orchestral music performances for the soloist to play from memory, while the orchestra play from dots. Both are amazing - the orchestra members are almost certainly sight-reading.
I probably would have preferred a little different voicing in the first 2mjnutes, but at the 2:00 mark he starts making choices that are now living rent free in my head
The question I have is; how on earth do these people even get together? Craigslist? Wanted: slide guitar player to perform with baroque symphony. Must have his own glass slide.
Love this piece of music by Bach. And I've really enjoyed Landreth playing his own music. Landreth playing Bach changes the piece into a work by Landreth-Bach. It's not bad but it's not Bach.
Very talented but this doesn't work for me AT ALL and i think the rest of you are just being sycamphantic. Harps and Strats with overdrive, a tube screamer and slide? No. It's not about opinion or taste, that wasn't pleasant. Picking something so well-known too, way too risky of a choice. Like cocaiane and LSD, some things just weren't meant to go together. All you people raving in the comments? It's perfectly normal to appreciate talent while admitting you just saw something that doesn't work. You're never going to listen to that piece again, nor do you want to, come on. You don't have to be a musician to understand that was not great. Plus he made 4 mistakes and had 2 pauses because he got lost, so even the performance wasn't THAT "amazing".

I've been preaching the amazing Sonny Landreth for many years, but this absolutely mind blowing.....
I've come to expect the unexpected from Sonny Landreth, but this goes far beyond the usual benchmarks for him!

The true Masters feel that way - they never stop learning their instrument and it's possibilities.
impeccable intonation...beautiful!

Incredible virsion of Bach. I listen to Classic music everyday. And new trials are much interesting.

The only slide bar master in the world

Such an amazing guitar player! So much feeling obn it!
Great player from Acadiana.
I always thought of Sonny as Paganini, but this works.
Wachet auf(, ruft uns die Stimme) *is* the cantata, the piece is called Zion hört (die Wächter singen).
Superb! He adds so much to this by playing with the slide. I don't know what to say.
my favorite cantata
Enjoyed that immensely!
This is a real treat to watch this. Thanks for posting!
just breathtaking! Sonny is one of a few great people and player!
Breathtaking
Just lovely. Hats off to the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra. I just wish someone had rented Sonny a tuxedo.

One like I wore to the Krewe of Rio Ball couple weeks ago.
Nah, he looks fine. Soloists don't have to wear tuxedos.
Bach #1
knocked my socks off! Sonny is *awesome*
breath taking!
This is as gorgeous as it is unexpected!
Cool. Not what I expected!!
Sonny talks to God. There is no other explanation for such a virtuose. Great!
God passes through Sonny's playing for sure.
This would have been up Jeff Beck's alley - but I did not expect it from Sonny. One master interpreting another. Beautiful.
gotta agree with you- Landreth deserves more recognition, he's a bad boy!
He is a national treasure...!

I need to see Sonny live!
Come to New Orleans Jazzfest - he plays at several venues around town beside the fest.

The orchestra "rose to the occasion" 'cos Sonny served them Pan-Fried Catfish + Cornbread prior to the performance.

Sonny Landreth displays amazing talent, but playing this without sheet music is not particularly amazing.
Every time he plays this a Klavier dies.

I'm starting to wonder if Sonny can't tune an engine with that guitar...he seems able to do anything else with it.

Just tapping in to the electric
Awesome !! Sonny is really 50 years ahead any guitarist (dixit Eric Clapton)
Holy cow.

I just found this song....im watching the nerd Avgn playing Friday the 13th for the commoder 64 and this song is there wow
One of the like is from Bach himself.

Close. The usual English translation is Sleepers Wake.
Why can't he play it as fast as js bach foundation sings it... The classicals do this way faster and swingender....

This just didn't work.
(not really) funny how the arrangement mostly omits the chorale melody, i.e. what the tenors sing.
I'm a long time fan of Mr Landreth, but it's painful to hear him from the opening guitar notes. It just doesn't work for me.
The slide guitar ruins it - straight notes would have been so much nicer.

Unbelievably embarrassing and pretentious. So so so bad. So misguided. This is pure kitsch, and he's clearly making a fool of himself.
