I'm from the same town as Sonny and have had the pleasure of hearing him live for the last 40+ years, often sitting in with other local legends like Clifton Chenier, Zachary Richard, and others. Very, very down to earth guy.

      Yep - Breaux Bridge, LA.
I was the F.O.H. sound engineer and production manager for Sonny back in the 90's.
Sonny (and Dave Ranson on bass) both excellent guys to work with and very laid back.
We used to go to "Cafe Des Amis" when I was in town visiting with Sonny. Excellent restaurant - which I was told is now closed. Always a good time on tour with Sonny and Dave! Both top notch musicians.

Sonny is one of very few guitar players that legit blows my mind. I've seen him a few times and and very often during the show I'll need to shake my head real fast just to make sure I'm actually awake and this is not some sort of dream bc what he had just played was so mind boggling that it should not be possible in the real world. He is one of, if not THE best living guitar player in the world. Also he's a SUPER duper nice guy and very humble. Got to do a meet and greet with him and he was so gracious towards his fans.

I live in Lafayette. There are some TREMENDOUS musicians around here. Sonny Landreth, Sam Broussard, Don Hayes, Wayne Toups, Tab Benoit. One of the best live music scenes in the country.

I mentioned earlier live in Lafayette Louisiana. Saw Sonny live two weeks ago at Festival International de Louisiane and again last Thursday night at Rhythms on the River at DeGaulle Square in River Ranch. He’s absolutely amazing. Vince Gill said watching Sonny was like algebra….he’d never understand it.

Saw Sonny Landreth at a Blues Workshop once in Syracuse, NY. He was taking questions from spectators. A guy asked him how he made a particular sound he heard several times and without blinking Sonny said, " You have to eat lots of Gumbo".

Oooooooh Sonny.... KING of Slydeco! This guy carved out his own niche among slide players* (most others are 'occasional' slide players, not Sonny) by developing a "behind-the-slide" playing technique that is singular and amazing. Slide on pinky, his other fingers are free to fret notes, chords and chord fragments! That, my friends, is incredible dexterity and tactile sensitivity. Right hand slaps and taps; his picking is what I call a Hybrid/Full PIMA method of picking; most other hybrid pickers only use just a couple of fingers. Sonny Landreth is a truly unique and creative player, and in my opinion a Criminally Underrated Guitarist.
Thanx Fil! For the due and proper on guys like Sonny.
    ROCK!

I hear criminally underrated a lot and often about people that other players are aware of and respect but also have a decent following among the public. I just saw a comment I did on Sonnys 4 U & Forever? And he is hardly heard but he is amazing. I first heard him on College Radio show called The Bayou. And the phrase is definitely warranted in his case.

I've seen Sonny two times, at a tiny little place in the wake of Clapton's Crossroads tour. I was feet away from Sonny. I could see every grimace of concentration and every drop of sweat. Probably the greatest and most intense live guitar performance I've ever seen.

pretty cool, scott. i don't know if i'd want to be that close. A guy i used to jam with saw Roy Buchannan i believe twice (week night gigs) and would stand right in front of him, gatherering everything he could. This guy took Jazz lessons as a teenager, and could play! (i believe he did this with YJM, too). Myself, never. Players need their space.

The next time was in 2005 on a festival stage, and I was up close and personal like you. He was just as you described, completely into what he was playing and absolutely amazing.

For myself, Sonny has the edge over the great Derek Trucks, hailing from the musical gumbo that is Louisiana/New Orleans. Such a melting pot of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, jazz, blues, country, rocknroll, cajun, zydeco & beyond. Then there's that fretting behind the slide technique...he's definitely my favourite electric blues based slide guitarist.
Speaking of great slide guitarists, I'd love to hear your assessment of jazz slide monster, Dave Tronzo...check him out, he'll melt your face!

And I’m a big Landreth fan. Sonny puts on an amazing show every time I’ve seen him. A unique talent, that, much like Johnny Winter and Rory Gallagher, never gets the widespread love that he probably deserves. Either way, Sonny is the boss!

Thanks Fil for This one! "Sonny has reinvented a new way to play guitar. And he doesn't just play slide. He's doing stuff behind the slide and ahead of the slide. It's like algebra to me. I couldn't figure it out in a million years, but it completely kills me to hear him play. His intonation is frighteningly good." ~Vince Gill

Might be too much but recall an interview with Sonny where he related a story about being a teenager and seeing The Jimi Hendrix Experience in La. Had an idea where he might be staying for the night and son of a gun, saw him in the gift shop the next morning, buying a tooth brush. Tried to answer what was the meaning behind "Bold As Love". Answer was short but left an impression on young Sonny!

When I was a kid, I saw Duane Allman, so I went out and bought an Ernie Ball glass slide. I thought I was okay, until around 1995 I was at an invitational jam with The Hippy Dogs and Kirby Kelly got up and started playing with two slides. I didn't take my slide out anymore. Then I caught Sonny playing somewhere, when I got home I took my slide out and sat it on my practice amp. Around that time I was talking to a Roady with Government Mule, with Warren standing right there, the roady said if you want to hear some really great slide playing go see Derick Trucks, Warren nodded like he was in full agreement with the roady and that Derick was bad ass. So first time I had a chance, I went to hear him, when I got home I tossed my slide into the waste basket.

Exactly, Fil! I think Sonny heard and saw(ABB played NO a lot) things, like the Duane's "bird calls" on Mountain Jam for example(sliding the end of his slide back to the bridge), then later heard some of those harmonics through his Dumble, and extended/manipulated. Just my guess. Who knows where Duane would be today?

@@wingsofpegasus Buddy Whittington is one of those guys who can play killer slide and do effortless runs transitioning from slide, as for me I fooled with slide for 25 years before I gave up on it. I'm a melody guy, although I enjoy hearing great players putting their mastery of craft on display. My finger picking has steadily improved since I gave up on chops, lol I've got a lot of catching up to do when it comes to someone like Jerry Donahue. Although one of the singers from Fatering Gray (however you spell it) tried to talk me into forming a band with her. By the grace of our heavenly father, I live in Dallas Texas, screw the west coast.

IMHO the most innovative slide player playing today. Great analysis Fil but he isnt just lifting the slide when fretting notes behind but often holds down the string behind and below the slide, he uses this technique a lot.

Speaking of slide, can you do David Lindley sometime? And because I mentioned Lindley, it reminds me to BEG for a James Burton video. Why does mentioning Lindley remind me of James Burton? That OUTSTANDING track on the Richard Thompson Tribute CD where he, Burton and June Tabor play "Beat the retreat" - don't know if there is video of that anywhere but Burton's solo will make you cry. A good Lindley video would likely be from a Jackson Browne concert.

Stan Lassiter uses a slide on his ring finger, but it's not a full slide. So he has all four fingers available and can switch effortlessly between slide and fretted. Check out his "Little Italy Shred" for an example.

Hey Fil, recently found your channel and I love it. You do a great job and I dig the varied types of players you choose. You have an awesome point of view. He's not exactly unknown, but Chuck Berry might make an interesting video. I feel like all rock players owe him a debt of gratitude. Jake E Lee is another interesting player. Maybe James Hetfield's down picking. Keep up the good work👍🏻

"A shot was fired, the gates flew open
The years streaked right before his eyes"
    New Landlord
    ruclips.net/video/IY0ht-GLzq8/видео.html
    Neon lights don't ever dim
In the kind of bars that never close
In a back room game T-Jim yelled,
"St. Gabriel! I'm gonna steal the show!"
He slapped his cards down on the table
Said "Boys, I got me a winning hand"
But the sight that made ole T-Jim tremble
Was the king that took his land
    Mister meet your new landlord
I heard you knockin' upon my door
    Mister meet your new landlord
I got plenty of room down on the floor
With the ticket burning in his hand
And the tip still ringing in his ear
Big Pete bet his whole life savings
As the race was drawing near
A shot was fired, the gates flew open
The years streaked right before his eyes
Too bad they were riding on the saddle
From a moment of ill advice
    Mister meet your new landlord
I heard you knockin' upon my door
    Mister meet your new landlord
I got plenty of room down on the floor
    Other names in other places
Different rules but it's all the same
Cause if that bug ever bites you
The scar will bear you shame
I tell you, son, you know you're in trouble
If you wake up one morning in a daze
And as you peer into the mirror
    The face leaning over says:
    Mister meet your new landlord
I heard you knockin' upon my door
    Mister meet your new landlord
I got plenty of room down on the floor

Fil- Another cool analysis, Sonny Landreth is great and the sample you picked proves why! He played the Waterfront Blues Festival here in Portland once or twice but unfortunately I missed him...hopefully next time I can make it.
Speaking of great slide players, but in a completely different genre, have you ever heard Debashish Bhattacharya? He plays North Indian Classical (Hindustandi) music as well Indian/Jazz fusion on modified slide guitars (with additional sympathetic strings) that he designed. Here's a clip from several years ago. Check it out when you get a chance. If you've never heard him you will be amazed: ruclips.net/video/SIc9PQEzBNI/видео.html (OOPS I posted the wrong link earlier, it went back to this video; but it's fixed now.)
