    nobody talks about Jim. He is so underappreciated. He plays such a big part for ATDI. In a way, he helps to ground them. Without Jim it's a little to all over the place. Mars Volta is great. Like Sparta even more. But ATDI is really the best assembly of cast of the 3.

    • @Barfbagdontsag
      @Barfbagdontsag 10 месяцев назад +9

      I feel Omar is akin to Carlos Santana and Jim is akin to Lindsay Buckingham. Both are UNDENIABLE talents…Omar always looked to push boundaries of rock and Jim was more about the songwriting. It is the perfect example of opposites colliding with a beautiful result.

      you're 100% right. ATDI one of those bands who really were more than the sum of their parts. the hardcore wing kept the prog wing grounded, and the prog wing made the band way more interesting than they'd have been as a straight hardcore band.

When you listen to it, it sounds so real, no crystal clear perfection, no Pro Tools or Pitch-Perfect correction, but it sounds great, because it's the sound of a band making music together, and interacting with each other. It's the true essence of what Rock is supposed to be about. Thanks for putting this together, it's a great example of what you(and all of us) have been trying to get people to understand. Perfection isn't the answer. It's about what is coming from your heart and soul! You are really making a difference! Lary

      Hi there, I've been a HUGE fan of your channel, LITERALLY since you started. But I feel compelled to give you a small bit of constructive criticism about your latest videos: ever since you started playing guitar, you seem to often try to work in some time talking about the level of difficulty the song or album your talking about is to play, which, all due respect; I feel detracts from your content. An example: Amputechture. TMV is my favorite rock band of ALL time & I have a special sentimental attachment of sorts to that record. So needless to say I had the biggest music nerd boner going into your video about it, I enjoyed sections of it, but I really felt the 2 or so minutes you spend talking about & attempting to play Vicarious Atonement derailed any momentum the essay had has prevented me from ever wanting to re-watch the vid... & I believe the reason is: for both musicians AND non-musicians alike, You need a Rick Beato level of knowledge & insight into theory &/or years, if not decades of experience in said field to point out something neither type of fan has noticed or thought about before. Something truly new
      I love what you do, you inspire me, PLEASE keep making content and music!

    Damn it Rick, you've surpassed my expectations. At the Drive-In getting your analysis. Thank you. Relationship of Command is one of my top ten albums. Enfilade is exceptional, the drumming on that track is amazing.
    It's funny that you highlighted the mixing by Andy Wallace. Omar hated the final mix of the album as he thought it didn't sound raw like ATDI, and accused Wallace of over mixing and over polishing the band's sound.
    I've had friends hear this album who said it's just chaos and loud noise. I keep telling them to listen to each track by tuning in on one instrument, then again with another. When you then listen as a whole each track is amazing and you appreciate the craftmanship behind it.

      I also loved this video, despite not loving the song. Rick compares the track at the end to Nirvana in terms of energy, and I also hear Pixies influences in the guitar parts and meter changes (naturally, given Cobain's influences). The reason Nirvana and the Pixies sell crap tons of records to this day is, of course, those catchy damn vocal melodies.

    Favorite part of this vid is how you give love to the drums and bass-they make ATDI groove like no other punk band.

  • @ReinZ_96
    @ReinZ_96 5 лет назад +2

    The thing you keep mentioning about how raw and imperfect this song is, is why I like so many underground punk and indie bands that are basically bedroom recording everything. Just straight passion and love for the music. It's messy and the production sounds like it's from 10 years ago, but it gives it so much charm that nothing on any major label gives. The Brave Little Abacus captures this feeling so well.

    Our sense of “in-tune” is largely shaped by western equal temperament, which is a compromise system. Exploring the in between space between semi-tones is really the last unexplored space in harmony and melody. I am enjoying the blending of non-western tuning concepts into so called popular styles.
