The cure entire catalog are brilliant simple melodies intertwining that can rip your heart out- most unique band ever
My favorite of all bands...got me thru many rough times in life ❤
No one ever talks about how amazing the drums are and how great the drummer in.. it propels the entire song. One of the greatest drum parts ever
I love his voice and his singing style--The Head on the Door is one of my favorite 80s albums. And I've always loved his look--I'm glad he never changed it; it's obviously an essential part of who he is.
Robert Smith did cut the hair short during the late 80s, it caused quite the uproar.
First song I ever heard was ”Boy’s don’t cry”, so simple yet it lingers it’s way right into your soul. ✨
Ahhh The Cure. Talk about a band that always takes me back to my youth, and they're still awesome!
First time hearing "The Cure" the drum beat was the first thing to standout in this performance for me.
Your demonstrations have become one of the high points in your analysis.
Keep Rockin' through the history of music! you're doing an excellent job Fil.
Robert's voice is like time machine ❤ Perfect.
I get very frustrated when people say 80s music is horrible. So many great artists came from that time. If you want to say top 40 80s music wasn't very good, that's a different matter but most top 40 music no matter the period isn't great - Closet Goth Chick
In retrospect the 80's were pretty good. Or maybe it's today's music,, or I'm just getting old lol. I'll take pretty much any 80's artist or band over anything by Cardi B or Meagan Trainor? I may have misspelled her name
Just to get a rise out of people, I used to say that there hasn't been any good music written since 1972... Some people would get downright hostile about it. lol
I hate today's music. Like a childish tune , sang by adults. You call this creavity ? It's so bad I'll rather hear old song
I Love The Cure takes me back to high school! It takes courage to be your true self and show that to the world! I respect and admire anyone who is secure enough in themselves to do that!
Kudos to Robert!...✌❤🤘😁
And btw, it definitely helps to understand the musicality of your analysis when you get your guitar out and demonstrate..😊🤘
I absolutely love The Cure! They are one of my favorite bands for many years. And R. Smith's songwriting is timeless.
Thank you. I never thought of him as a guitarist. Breaking it down was very interesting. I really just thought of him as the vocalist and lyricist. Cool
Still one of the greatest bands ever, and very hard to beat in terms of how tight they are in live performance. Definitely one to see.
His voice hasn't changed at all! Love!
Fascinating breakdown of one of my favourite songs!!!!
I've always been a lyric guy and the songs of the Cure tell stories. I guess that is why my tastes in music run so wild. I don't care what genre it is, if it tells a story, if it connects to me I'm in
. I’m definitely a 60’s & 70’s guy because that is the music I grew up with, but there is great music from every era, and if you can’t appreciate something new, you are living in past.
Primarily Im attracted to voices but I do love all types of music from all decades and countries. I just discovered an app called Radiooooo and its a map of the world you press on along with the decade you’re interested in and it streams music from that country and that era. I love it, thought I’d share.
Tracy Thanks for the tip. We went to 6 concerts and 3 festivals last year where saw a whole range of music. I doubt that will be the case this summer since so many events and concerts have already been cancelled
@@TracyD2 Thank you for sharing that. It is through "comments" that I am able to branch out.
Stan ridgway is a master in story telling too.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time!! Thanks for analyzing it!
His voice still sounds great so many years later. Great band and great video thanks for sharing.
Have not heard this is such a long time. Wow. Fil, you found a gem.
I have 16th row Amalie Arena June 29th 2023, The freaking Cure are a sonic master class in melody. Beyond excited
dude, I fucking love the cure. I'm really glad you got to covering them. I was a young teen metal head when I first heard the "Head on the door" album. It really opened me up to a whole world of new music. It showed me the error of my ways and inspired me to play. Most importantly, it inspired me to look into all sorts of music. In some strange happenstance, I would have never found King Crimson or Dead can Dance etc....without The Cure.
it is just mind blowing to hear how good this band is
Ok, Fil, you introduced me to Nik Kershaw on one of your previous analysis. (It is now the ringtone on my phone.) I had never heard of The Cure, but liked this tune so much that I watched the film in which it was featured, Just Like Heaven. You are introducing me to so many different and great songs! Thank you!
Cool!
Thank you for your review/analysis and demonstration of playing. I love The Cure...the story/songs, Robert's voice!! And the melodies. I appreciate how you draw attention to the music that I would have completely missed.
Love his voice so unique. Great tunes so tight. Thank you.
Oh, Fil, if you're a fan of Gary Numan, perhaps you'd like to do an analysis on him? I practically WORSHIP Gary Numan. I fell in love with him ever since I was a very small child and I was watching SNL with my oldest sister Roxanne and he was the musical guest. I was hooked. I remember he sang "Cars" (of course) and "Praying To The Aliens". And thankfully I got to go see him perform many years later and meet him and his wife Gemma and hang out with them at their hotel room. For about three hours! I was most honored. Gemma liked me and invited ME to hang out with THEM. We were standing in the audience next to each other during Gary's performance. She befriended me and started talking to me and we hit it off! One of the highlights of my life spending time with Gary Numan (one of my idols!) and having him talk to me and sharing his life with me like I was one of his friends!🙏💖
Love this band-they never get old great review! And yes everyone joins together and sings right back to him.
There has always been something about this song that just speaks to my soul... still one of my favorites to this day!
Great video Fil! Rick Beato did a video about this song too. Amazing how much went in to this song.
Great breakdown as usual. I love the Cure.
I just watched a doc on CCR, and they were talking about down tuning to D. First time I’d ever heard of it. And their songs had very few chords.
Thank you, Fil. Stay well.
Drop D tuning. The lazy person's way to play rhythm guitar. I use it all the time.
@@sacluvsBM A lot of bands tune down to D for concerts. Tom Fogerty (CCR rhythm guitarist) was taught by his brother, John, but still had difficulty playing some relatively simple riffs. I mean how hard is Down On The Corner? I suspect John played the rhythm guitar under the radar.
I will use all of this information on our project...... Attitude on down strokes...
I can hear the muted version.. Perfectly
Ahhh...Glastonbury. Just a distant memory of a special night.
Wonderful.
Great song, and another terrific analysis! This reminds me of when I saw The Cure live in Colmar (France) in 1989. Some great sounds, but my main memory is of getting food poisoning from a dubious seafood pizza.
The bass is awesome, thanks again Fil,,love the cure
Simon Gallup is amazing!
The Cure are so cool great video Fil!!! 😘and this is a great song !!
Great analysis always. Nice to know simple can work in its own uniqueness and hold its own sophistication. Thx Fil
Robert Smith is unique and has a great ear for melody. His voice has held up for decades.
I love how knowledgeable you are..keep up the great work
I LOVE The Cure. Great analysis, thanks.
For all the times I've gone back through your older videos looking for ones I haven't seen yet, how did I ever miss THIS??? My favourite band performing my favourite song!!
The thing I love the most about Robert Smith's voice is that it's not perfect, and that's what makes it perfect for the lyrics he writes. He became the singer of the band by default, because no one else could sing. He considered himself a guitar player, not a singer. And maybe for that reason, he's not so "precious" about his voice, and has always been willing to use it in different ways, depending on the atmosphere he's trying to create in a song (if that makes sense, I know what I mean, but I'm not sure I'm explaining it properly).
I love the way he tailors his voice to each song. The voice he sings "Lullaby" in is completely different from the voice he sings "Pictures of You" in which is completely different again from the voice he sings this song or "Friday I'm In Love" in. And, of course, each of those songs creates a very different mood.
When you're at a Cure show, which can last 3-3 1/2 hours, his voice gets pitchy, it cracks, he inevitably messes up the lyrics tons few songs...and everyone in the crowd loves every second of it. Doesn't matter if he forgets the words, we'll sing them for him. 🖤🕷️🖤
Finding this video just made my night. And now I'm going to go listen to some Cure!!
Saw The Cure back in 1985 at the Irvine Meadows in California.... Saw them again at the Irvine meadows in 1993........ Irvine Meadows was torn down a few years ago to build homes on the site....Before that in the 1970s it was Lion Country Safari..... I still live about 4 miles from that place...
Ahhhhhh...
Thanks for this one!
The Cure
There's no one remotely like them.
Special memories evoked every time I listen to them. Glad I got to see them in the 80s. Robert's vocals are still timeless. He is unique. So is his style of playing. His lyrics are so very good... he's a fantastic songwriter!
"Close To Me" is my favorite...
The different live renditions/interpretations of this song are something. A jazzy little emotionally filled number.... gets me every time.
Thank you Fil
❤
One of the greatest pop songs of all time! It’s in my top 10z
There's a great Australian band called the Go-Betweens that has a jangly guitar that, at times, reminds me of The Cure.

😊
Hi Fil! When I hear The Cure I think of my daughter...this was one of her favorite groups! After listening to them I must say she had good taste...they are pretty good! She got her love of music from me...I had the record player going all day long when she was little....in fact she started piano lessons by age 7...played flute by high school, and became a Music Therapist...listening to the music she loved I must say I taught her to love some beautiful sounds! When you start a child very young with lots of music they learn to appreciate it! ✌️
All the girls I had unrequited crushes on as a teenager were mad into the Cure, so I hated them. When I actually 'grew up', I realised what a great band the Cure are and what a catalogue of wonderful melodic songs. Robert Smith's live vocals here are just spectacular.
Thanks Fil. Great analysis. I thought I heard more chord tones in the descending melody on the record version.
I love the Cure they still sound great, your guitar demo was brilliant!!
Wow, I haven't heard the Cure in years. Good stuff man. Thanks Fil.
Solfège - a concept not often referred to in RUclips music videos. :-) Great job discussing the nuances. Stay Safe, everyone!
Yeah , the melody is great ! Love it !
I like the Cure but couldn't name a song or an album. As soon as this song came on, I was hooked on the melody and I loved how you showed us why we love this. Don't ever apologize for getting the guitar out, Fil. Music is a foreign language I know but one that I have spoken badly all my life. You are like the Grammar teacher that comes in and gives us the discipline we need to communicate better.
Watching Robert Smith in concert is amazing. He never stops strumming, ever! Love, love LOVE the Cure.
Simon Gallup on bass has been in the band for 40 years . All but 2 years of the cure .
My fav band on the planet!!🖤🖤🖤
Ah, I wondered before why the riff was played down the neck, rather than across it, but this has answered my question. Playing it like this you can get the drone on the E.
This song always made me mellow and relaxed 😊
Oh dude...this is my sweet spot. Punk, post-punk, new wave. Thanks Fil! They get a bad rap often. But there's a ton of talent there, as you know.
This is the man and band that gave the movie the Crow it's voice in the form of an epic ballad.
Always love the content by the way. Defo the best music analysis on youtube
Thanks!
Just shows you not to judge a book by its cover.. I love the words and the music. This band is new to me. Thank you for this analysis, Fil.. I love hearing you play this back on your guitar, too
I like this song but favorite of theirs is “A Forest”! It’s deep and haunting!
The best song in the world
Same! Bought the single when it came out and played it to death. Still love it.
OMG I have always loved this song. Such a long time since I've heard it. Thanks for sharing.
Love the Cure, great breakdown Fil !!
Great analysis Fil, just what we need is the Cure, Jeff in LA 3
More Cure, please :) PS I'm so happy I found your channel. All hail the algorithm
Boys Don't Cry is in the key of A Major. Great review, yet again, Fil! Cheers, mate! :)
Visual= rough and tumble,
Audio=smooth and steady.
Artistry and flair= The Cure.
🤟
Thanks professor... Great job Brotherrrrrrr
Robert has hair issues 😄
I like the scenic image of Robert Smith.
I guess I heard once that Robert Smith was inspired by the Works of Gustav Mahler(1860-1911) and the prose of Albert Camus (1913-1960) .
I really like The Cure "Purple Haze " Song written by Jimi Hendrix rendition .
Nice breakdown, Fil. The eighties brought us such a variety of talent. I loved The Cure, The English Beat, Duran Duran, The Fixx, along with Dokken, Triumph, Leppard’s early albums, etc. Will you please do an analysis of Queensryche? Chris DeGarmo was an amazing guitarist (and, like Bruce, a talented pilot). Geoff Tate had an impressive vocal range. Take Hold of the Flame might be a good one. I’ll look for a live show from them. Too bad we didn’t have cellphones back then; I saw them for every tour in LA.
Is there a great love version of One and Only? I haven't looked, but the live stream Saturday made me think the same as you!
Love The Cure! One of my favorite bands. Most people know them because of Love Song, Just like Heaven, Friday I'm in Love. More pop-ish songs. There is so much more to them. They have this captivating pull on me and I honestly love everything they have done. Check out A Strange Day, The Edge of the Deep Green Sea, A Thousand Hours, Harold and Joe and Disintegration. Thanks for checking out The Cure!
All I can say is WOW! You must be inside my head. PS thanks for the Karen Carpenter analysis.
Nice! I really like the Cure. The first song I heard from them was Friday I'm in love. It became a personal anthem on Fridays after work back then. :- ) But they have done so many more good songs.
They stll have IT after all these years! Such a unique sound vocally and instrumentally. They were the second band that I saw Live in my teens after Psuedo Echo and both bands can still rock it out! My parents were a little worried about me going to see them given that they did look a bit different to the other bands that I followed. 🤣
This was ACE Fil! You've could have gone on, ya know? I don't think ANYBODY would have minded if the video would have been longer. Always thoroughly enjoy hearing your analysis. Very smart and informed you are. And I love watching your reactions! You should see my head going back and forth! Watching the band then going back to the left side of the screen to watch you and that dazzling smile of yours then my head moving back to the right side of the screen to watch more of the band. It's ALMOST like watching a tennis game, except my head doesn't move back and forth as much. The Cure has ALWAYS been one of my favorite bands. In 1989, me and my best friend went to see them on the Disintegration tour. And oh my gosh! It was THE best! When Robert Smith came out onto the stage, me and my friend were grabbing each other's arms, shaking each other and almost hyperventilating saying, "Oh my God! It's Robert Smith! It's Robert Smith! Oh my God! Oh my God! We sounded like such a bunch of retards! LOL My best friend styled my very black hair and put my make-up on to look like the spitting image of Siouxsie Sioux because we knew that her and Robert Smith were good friends and were both in the band "The Creatures" with each other. I wore a pretty basic Siouxsie outfit. Nothing outrageous, but definitely something she'd wear. We were in the front row, right up against the stage and as soon as Porl Thompson saw me he was all smiles and acknowledged me, most very impressed that I knew a little backround information. Although, I'm sure TONS of people knew that. I think he just being nice because I was right in his face! LOL Such crazy young teenage kids we were back then Fil! I wish YOU were my guitar teacher! I think you'd be a LOT more fun to learn from than my present guitar teacher. As much as I love her, I think it would be a lot more beneficial for me and I believe I'd get a lot more out of it. And I wouldn't even let your dashing, handsome, good looks distract me! Anyway, I'm sorry that my comment was the length of a novel! I just wanted to let you know how much I love watching you and listening to your analysis. And I also wanted to share my Cure story/experience with you. Thanks Fil for another kick-ass analysis vid! You ROCK! Lots of love to you and the UK!😃🙏💕🎶🎸🎼🎤🎵🎧🎹✌🍀
Nice analysis! If there were ever enough demand for it...it would be cool to hear Steve Kilbey's songwriting analyzed...
Oh cool, and a bit of a coincidence, as my former bandmates and I were discussing The Cure only earlier today; It was our 33rd Anniversary this weekend, and Smith & Co had been one of our main influences :-) And on with your video ... :-) *Edit:* Good stuff as always, especially the demonstration of the Downstrokes vs. Fullstrokes phenomenon. Thank you Fil! :-)
Happy birthday to you all then.
@@nakazul1 - That's very kind of you, thank you! :-)
I agree, a very unusual group. Love their different style. Great analysis as usual Fil !
Fil, please check out "Suzanne Vega: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert" from Feb. 10, 2014 performed with brilliant guitarist and producer, Gerry Leonard, who gave David Bowie, his unique layering of sound that was nothing short of miraculous. Check out the hypnotic guitar "bells" Gerry inserts near the end of Vegas' "Tom's Diner."
Also, check out the song in the same video called "Luka," which is the name of the girl who "lives upstairs on the second floor" and is the victim of domestic violence. "Luka," by the way, means "wound" in Indonesian. A name for the girl aptly chosen to correlate with the nature of the lyrics.
And just continue what you're doing by bringing depth and understanding to the music we listen to. Thank you Fil.

One of the best intros of all time.
Very good analysis, Fil.
Nice breakdown of the elements, Fil. This song always sounds fresh wherever it pops up. Cheers!
I Love Love Love this song!
That was a fascinating demonstration of the difference between full strumming and down strokes. I never consciously thought about that. Thanks. And as a sidenote, about a year ago you did an analysis of Taj Farrant. I just listened to his latest rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Oh my God. You were right about his youth having time to practice. He has even improved greatly over a year ago. He is awesome. But I still have to close my eyes to listen to him. Toooooo much emoting.
Outstanding analysis and demonstration of this classic tune. Fil, I don't often make requests - in fact, maybe never. But I would simply love to see you do an analysis of Pete Townshend's performance of "Drowned" from The Secret Policeman's Ball.
Just became familiar with the Cure a few months this ago. I love their song Friday I'm in Love. The 80's had a full spectrum of bands, didn't they? Great analysis!
I love watching your videos. It’s amazing how much I learn from every one.
I’ve wanted your analysis on several performances/artists and the only way I can find to request is to leave comments.
This morning I listened to one of the songs/artists that I would love you to analyze. It’s the George Michael-Elton John version of “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”. George Michael’s vocal is amazing in this performance; particularly him jumping from melody to harmony. I very interested in your analysis.
Please keep up the good work. Strong.
It really surprised me to hear the scale! Their super-melodic songs pop up in movies and TV shows a lot; they're so expressive!
Hello Lynn...are you ready for baseball...hopefully
@@mevrammcoyoteV8f150 Haha! I was JUST listening to an old recording of the great organist at the White Sox ballpark play "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" with Harry Carey leading the crowd singing! You must be psychic.
@@lynndow3185 great minds...well..they Think alike .🧠
It just goes to show you don't have to show off with chord changes and multi layers complex riffs to get a wonderful song, the Cure's song are globally accessible, remembered and loved just because of this. It's a lesson in focusing on melody and expressive vocals not packing in every 'cool' chord and lead line you have been working on. Thanks Mr. Fil, and love when you get the guitar out :)
Ahhhhhhhhhhh! So great!
Hey!I am not even done watching yet and u gave me a like! Anyway it's an awesome analyses! Really like these guys and with your breakdown I now know why! Thanks! "Rock!"
Nice Teased Hair....pretty sure I had this cassette in the early nineties...good band..good memories....thanks Fil
I’m a huge fan of The Cure Fil! Just a great band with story telling lyrics and amazing musical brilliance! Seen them live on quite a few occasions and they’re sensational! Excellent Fil! Cheers Mario! 😀👌🤘
My kind of band
I agree Roberts unique vocals seem timeless and unchanged! In terms of simplicity..sometimes less is more..sticks in your head and just wont get out. I've always been a fan of The Cure and their style. This was a great performance and your analysis and demonstrations excellent as always Fil! Thanks! 😎🎼🎵🎶🇨🇦
Another great analysis my man.👍
I am giving the thumbs up before watching Fil! That's how confident I am of your abilities! "Rock."
Thanks!
Cure = Pure Genius !
This and Friday.... all I needed.
oh, yeah!
Close to me...❤
I’ve loved them forever and I don’t know why, but I never saw them! I turned 59 last week and they are STILL on my bucket list, lol Loved this analysis (obviously 😁)
What initially drew me to the cure was the sound of the Fender VI guitar with FX,,,,,, Robert's voice still sounds the same but the way he delivers his voice now that he's older is better than his early years,,,,, his voice is timeless,,,,,
