    I love how comprehensively you cover these basic topics. there is just so much to learn about maya. I have used bump and diffuse maps but normal maps were like...alien symbols to me

    Thankyou so much for creating this! The comprehensiveness of it is fantastic. When learning a software like Maya I feel some tutorials assume you know certain settings you should select when a lot of the time you do not. You have helped me with something I have been stumped on for a while. Great tutorial!

    I have to say after a whole summer of no work I was worried about all the different bits to a complete shader and working in hypershade again but watching these has really helped, also! Knowing that I don't have to attach all the different nodes in hypershade like, roughness and difference and I can just use the ai standard surface tab to find all the subsections for them was just invaluable thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏

    1:00 Normals look like a rainbow because each pixel contains 2 values: X gradient and Y gradient. They're plugged into R and B channels, hence the colorful look. The normal has no depth information, but some can be calculated via integration

    Great explanation, thanks. I do use displacements maps to create geometry with the "Bake selected geometry" option but for some reason in my Maya 2022.3, although the preview render shows the displacement, it's not adding that geometry to the output obj as normal. I'm having to use an older version of Maya 2019 to make this work, any ideas why? Thanks

  • @evanalexan
    @evanalexan 2 года назад

    Is it possible to create Displacement Maps from photos of a single object? If I can control the lighting and I'm the one taking the photos? I've seen some tutorials on creating Normal Maps by lighting an object from four (4x) different angles and then combining those 4 photos into a single Normal Map. But is there a similar process for Displacement maps? I have a ton of things I need to photograph and model, and painting the displacement in ZBrush for every single thing doesn't seem feasible.

    • @AcademicPhoenixPlus

      If Arnold is missing, go to Windows > Settings/Preferences > Plug In Manager. Look for MtoA (Maya to Arnold), click on both check marks. That should active Arnold and all of the shaders! I hope that helps. :)

    Hi, I'm doing an environment demo reel. It's basically a street scene with 10 11 buildings, would u recommended using just the normal map or both normal n height as displacement like you did at the end. I understand the render time will increase and I have around 600 frames. Would love to have your opinion. Thank you

    • @AcademicPhoenixPlus
      @AcademicPhoenixPlus  9 месяцев назад

      I think if your computer can handle it, go for it! You can always mention in your reel that you are using displacement and normals, too.

      @@AcademicPhoenixPlusHello again, I just wanted to clarify something..for my reel I'm only showing a few buildings, vehicle and a food cart as close up, should I just add the height maps on those models and ignore the other ones that will only be seen from far so I can save some time?

    I have one doubt.. What's the need of alpha luminance while using normal map because alpha lumiance should be on while using grayscale properties map like bump roughness metaliness (black n white color map) but normal map is a colourful map combination of rgb so I think while using normal map in bump node as tangent space normal we should check and make sure that alpha luminance is off.. But you said it that u have to keep it on.. While using normal map.. Please kindly clear my doubt...?

    • @AcademicPhoenixPlus
      @AcademicPhoenixPlus  2 года назад

      Displacement can only read black/white images. If you put color in, it will try its best to translate color into b/w, but it will give you unpredictable results. Stick with b/w, and it will render better (white rises, black sinks in). Hope that helps!
