its difficult to find meaningful tutorials for such a unique community, so thankyou so much for your awesome tutorials!!! Helps alot for a student like me :D
Can u please solve my query about displacement map ie more imp than anything....if i place displacement map on low poly model its spreads the edges,do you have any solution for that..
thank you so much! but I have one question, why I can't reduce the number of Displacement? The displacement number box is now in yellow color. please help
I wanna say thank you for all of these videos lol... This is like some sort of gold mine xD ... I tried Maya 2016 and It was horrendous lol Can you ever do a video to show the changes in Maya 2016 vs the previous iterations of Maya?
ok, this is where I mess, up, I make a wall, apply texture, but it appears the wall is 12 ft for instance and my pictures are 4 ft, so I see 2 seems, im guessing I need a tutorial on diffuse? Is that a different tutorial?
NOR3MSTI Hi there, This is not a diffuse problem but a UV problem. The texture needs to fit the surface. Check out this video I made on the topic ruclips.net/video/Tpl0u1uRSUI/видео.html Regards, Mike
Mike Hermes s sir. I made what you have done in this video, everything is alright. Could you please share your mail id, I will send the output file of mine
Hi Mike, in what particular way do we use these 2 maps. Why maya have bump map when there is displacement map which result is more realistic than bump map? 🤔
Not a maya pro in any way but I'm gonna take a shot and say that maybe, maybe it's that the bump map can be used for animation where something would not be the focus and maybe to save space when rendering?? Dunno! 😂
If the displacement maps are physically pushing the geometry in/out, why would I want to use bump? AND Is there any utility to use both on the same material?
Can this be applied to a character model ? i.e if you sculpt muscles in mudbox, can you make those as a displacement map for a lowpoly character in maya and the animate it.
Its usuualy necessary to use a Specular map if you already have one of these (bump or displacement) ? I mean isnt the light react normally/realistic enough when one of these are being applied?
So basically displacement maps are always better, except if you are doing a project that needs low rendering times? Or is there a use for bumps that displacements maps cannot replace?
Thanks Mike, another great lesson... So if displacement gives more realism what type of scenario would i choose to use bump mapping, either in replacement of displacement or with it?
Hi mike! Great example! I have some problems with the displacement map. Once i applied a displacement map to an object it swelled in render (here is a screenshot: postimg.org/image/pb5vst2jl/) And here is an original object screen: postimg.org/image/ip56oeg71/ Any idea of how to fix this? P.S. thanks for the tutorial!
You're the best Maya-youtuber (proud subscriber). Thanks a lot man.
+FoeThaLoveOfMoney13 Thank you sooo much !!

+XxRibbonFlowAnimexX Thank you, I appreciate that
Thank you so much! With ur video I can finish my homework!
From a beginner this video was very helpfull, love the series, am working thru every single one, thank you.
dimeolas777 You're welcome
Thank you so much for this tutorial I was going nuts searching for this explanation. Really appreciate it!! 😊
That side by side comparison just blew my mind lol
Thanks a lot. Very clear and straight to the point explanation!.
Thanks, Mike for making this video very easy.
Awesome, so clear cut, thank you!
Great Tutorial, thanks Mike!
Bump Maps vs Displacement Maps in Autodesk Maya explained
Mike Hermes Thank you.
You're welcome
its use full... dude...thnx.. my concept is clear..
Finally something helpful.
Thank you by the way.
Very clear. I got it now. Thank you!
You are very welcome
Thank you very much! You're very good in explaining.
Ans thank you for watching Lara !
hi please tell me i am create point light what is short cut button on keybord for on light
+Uzair Ahmad Hit 7 on your keyboard to activate light
Great video thank you again !

Is there a way to layer effects on a mesh ,like have the plain texture then add a displacement then layer on top a low gloss efect?
Yes, that is how it works
thank u sir
thank you so much! but I have one question, why I can't reduce the number of Displacement? The displacement number box is now in yellow color. please help

Arakmatzu Hi there and thanks !
Probably later this year. I am currently on 2015

Check out this video I made on the topic

I got some smaller gaps between the walls on four sides after the render output. How can I avoid that?
In the model or the texture ?
In model, It like a gapes between the faces in my cube.
Did you create it as a solid cube ?
Mike Hermes s sir. I made what you have done in this video, everything is alright. Could you please share your mail id, I will send the output file of mine

How would I increase the depth on Mila's bump map?
With the slider in the attribute editor
Which Slider?
I know it is in the attribute editor, but there are some-much with the Mila Material.
So, it only works for rendering. So what if I want to use displacement map for game assets? Will it still work?
Yes, it would
Oh really? Thanks. I am planning to use displacement map for our game in unity.
When I try to render it, the rendered image turns out grey why is that?
If the displacement maps are physically pushing the geometry in/out, why would I want to use bump?
AND
Is there any utility to use both on the same material?
Nope
Dave In a game displacement maps take a LOT more power to render than bump maps.
Displacement maps take more processing power
thank you so much! ur video remind me a lot of things that alrd forget hahaha btw thanks a lot
is there anything in photoshop that you can do to get a better displacement map like you do with bump maps
+Khromus S Like what ?
does making the image show black and white help with the displacement ?
like the bump maps
Yes
Can this be applied to a character model ? i.e if you sculpt muscles in mudbox, can you make those as a displacement map for a lowpoly character in maya and the animate it.
I would use a normal map but yes
Thank you , great tutorial....
And you
before this video i was checked so many tutors... but they dnt knw explain about this topic clearly
So displacement maps are physically pushing geometry in/out? While normal maps and bump maps only fake it?
Great tutorial by the way!
Exactly
Thank you
LIFE SAVER! THANK YOU
Its usuualy necessary to use a Specular map if you already have one of these (bump or displacement) ? I mean isnt the light react normally/realistic enough when one of these are being applied?
A specular map is not about shadows created by elevated surfaced createde by bump or displacement maps, it is about shiny or not shiny
So basically displacement maps are always better, except if you are doing a project that needs low rendering times? Or is there a use for bumps that displacements maps cannot replace?
Nowadays Normal map is better than displacement
i need separately ...... displacementmap tutor and how to install D miarmy plugin and maya to after effct colourcorrection tutor plzzzz sir
Thank you , thank you and thank you
Thanks Mike, another great lesson...
So if displacement gives more realism what type of scenario would i choose to use bump mapping, either in replacement of displacement or with it?
FrequencyIO I would use displacement for close ups and bump for background
original model vs displacement map....how come displacement map will have nowhere near the detail of the original model??
Thank u so much
thanks men , that was good
I always thought the displacement map required a ridiculous amount of extra divisions to work.
akaCol1987 Nope
Thanks, that was really helpful! :)
Marcel Rebmann You are welcome
Thanks sir🙏🏽🙏🏽
ooh superb thank you
Thanks you ❤️
Cool
Thanks man

Олександр Кропивка Hi there,
The only thing I can think of if the amount of displacement you have set. Decrease it and you should be fine
bump map worked nothing going on with displacement mapping
in other words one is an illusion and the other is really displacing the map as the name suggests.
