Yo Preston, just a quick history behind this track. This song is so much more than just a "classic." Nirvana, especially with this track, is one of the defining moments in the history of music, taking the entire scene from one era into the next in the early 1990s. It CANNOT be overstated just how huge this song was when it was released, and how different and raw and powerful it was to the average mainstream listener. Seriously, it was massive, and it was everywhere, and everyone decided it was time to move on from the old age of music and in a newer, grungier direction. It was THE anthem for an entire generation, and pretty much simultaneously killed and then recreated what rock and roll would sound like for a long time to come.
I literally remember the red light intersection I was sitting at in my car when I first heard this song and turning it up. And I watched Metallica and Slayer when they were opening bands in the 80's
This is one of the few songs where I vividly remember the first time I heard it. It was late at night, autumn 1991, and I was driving across the San Mateo Bridge back home to Oakland, listening to KFJC (low wattage college radio station out of Los Alto) when this came on. I moved to the right lane, slowed down as much as I could without obstructing traffic, and drove on praying "Please don't let me go out of range before the DJ says who this is. PLEASE don't let me go out of range before the DJ says who this is."
Hello hello hello... how low? This song represented how much we hated the game of society of the time. Fight Club said it best: "We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. This song has so much power in it without that being the intention. That’s what makes this song great. I’ll spare a paragraph of fandom, but this song changed my life when I heard it back in the day. Keep up with the videos. Your channel is dope
First time I heard Nirvana was before the hype. I was living in Nevada. My car was an '85 Chevette with an AM radio. I was driving out in the hills and found an AM radio station that was broadcasting a simulcast of an FM station. I got to hear Territorial Pissings by Nirvana while sitting up on that mesa. It helped end much of the loneliness and depression I was feeling that day.
No so many artists much more talented and had much more substance. Everything kurt sings about is me me me. Tupac was about his community, race, and politics actually substance.
His songs were mainly about angst and "selfish" approach to lyricism, not to mention that the genre he shines in is grunge which is the obesse and smelly child of Rock music. Great? Yes. Tupac of Rock? No.
You mean Tupac is the Jim Morrison of hip hop. Rock music has more musical icons and respectable artists than hip hop. Just naming a few musicians such as Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Hendrix, Cobain, Thom Yorke, and Lennon really establishes my point. Their legacy is written in stone.

This cannot be overstated how much this song meant to music, society, culture and how the moment it was shown on MTV, the music scene as we knew it, changed forever. Nirvana was the american version of the Beatles. Not in style by any means, but what they did to the culture/society at large when they came to prominence. Then everyone else followed suit. (Pearl Jam, AIC, STP, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, The Pumpkins, Bush, Temple of The Dog, Mudhoney, Hole, Garbage, The Cranberries, etc......) It was an incredible time for music..
They're a band with many sides to them. You haven't heard their really hard music yet. Try "Scentless Apprentice" or "Milk It" at least once, it's a different side of them. For their harder side don't listen to anyone who tells you to listen to Bleach, listen to In Utero instead.
@@stephenlee2894 The sound of Bleach is not that different from other underground bands that make noise, Kurts songwriting ability matured over time. On the other hand, nothing I've ever heard before or since sounds like In Utero.
My god, I remember when this debuted on MTV. Changed my life. Legit. I wore out this album and ended up wearing out Bleach too, lol. Thanks for this reaction! ☺️❤️
@@Bear78420 I would honestly argue that Dave Grohl is one of the greatest musicians of all time. From Nirvana to Queens of the Stone Age to Tenacious D to the Foo's, his song writing and both guitar and drumming abilities cement him as one of the most talented people in all of music history.
Over 25 years old and the song still sells up in me a surge of all kinds of emotions ...just want explode with reaction. Let me try to convey how important this song was; it was conveyed in this sentence and pretty much sums up the impact: "If you were in a band on Friday and Saturday Nirvana's Album "Nevermind" came out on Monday you were out of job ". It ripped up the commercial world and tried to get rid of formulated rock n roll. For about 4 years it did just that until Cobain( the lead singer) chose to leave this world. It came in with them and stopped with them. I feel so lucky to have experienced this...it was truly the last great movement in the rock n roll ...I could write for pages and hours on this. So glad you dug this!!

I just wish Nirvana made more songs like this...
Overrated? It thankfully killed the big hair rock/ballad era.
This is the biggest song of the 90's. It changed everything.
I don't know if it's the biggest but certainly in Top 10, of not Top 5

I'd say November Rain is very high.
Jan Ellermeier i liked that song, it was big, but this song changed everything. This was MJ thriller album level.
I agree this was a genre killer...killed hair band hard rock
Jan Ellermeier loved November Rain, but Smells Like Teen Spirit was the biggest song, and Nirvana was the biggest band.
This song completely changed the face of rock music in the 1990's.

(Pearl Jam, AIC, STP, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, The Pumpkins, Bush, Temple of The Dog, Mudhoney, Hole, Garbage, The Cranberries, etc......) It was an incredible time for music..
I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song... I knew immediately music had changed
RIP kURT
Long Cool Woman by The Hollie's
They're a band with many sides to them. You haven't heard their really hard music yet. Try "Scentless Apprentice" or "Milk It" at least once, it's a different side of them. For their harder side don't listen to anyone who tells you to listen to Bleach, listen to In Utero instead.
Milk It is one of my favourite songs ever. 👌👌👌
Dude. Bleach and In Utero are totally different albums and neither is "better" than the other. Besides, Bleach is a fucking badass album.
This song came out when I was like 11 or 12. Just so great many teen memories come flooding in when I hear it lol
You are aware of who is on drums; right? They changed rock forever.
Seen the foo fighters in concert and it was epic dave is definitely as awesome as u would imagine
WHO'S WITH ME?! *Foo Fighters - Everlong* = Drummer from Nirvana... did pretty well for himself ;)
Grim Reaper I think the sky is a neighborhood is my favorite foo fighters song
@@Bear78420 I would honestly argue that Dave Grohl is one of the greatest musicians of all time. From Nirvana to Queens of the Stone Age to Tenacious D to the Foo's, his song writing and both guitar and drumming abilities cement him as one of the most talented people in all of music history.
Thanks for the Nirvana bro...They got soooo many classics too
My favorite band of all time. Kurt was and is my idol. Thank u Nirvana for everything.
In the 100 greatest videos of the 90's this was #1!!!
If you react to Nirvana, you’ve got to do the same to Pearl Jam
Rammstein - Amerika
Avenged Sevenfold - bat country
Avenged Sevenfold - afterlife
Can you review soundgarden, skid row and faith no more? Let me know if you need titles.
Definitely skid row! Youth gone wild or 18 and life
Dancing with my best friend both of us expecting our first babies. Loved this track then and still love it now. RIP Curt.
