Compared to all the other fake hair metal and soft rock that was out at the time. This was like a color movie showing up when everything else was black and white. Still sounds great to me too, that song holds up, doesn't sound dated at all.
Bill Bored i was only 9, but had older siblings whom, thankfully, kept me informed on the best music. Ive heard the intro/daves snare compared to the snare which kicks off like a rolling stone. A signal to the listener that times have changed, this is different, and things will never be the same. I always appreciated that comparison
I was about 14 in freakin' Nowhere, Alabama, when this came on the local rock station. After it finished there was a pause while the reverb died, before the DJ said "what the hell was that?" (several years before the Simpsons made it a meme). No one knew just what the hell had happened but it changed everything.
Bill Bored, I agree. I was 20 years old when this came out and I could not make any stereo play this song loud enough, and I could never listen to it too many times.

Some songs bring back VERY specific memories to me. This is one of them. This song came out in late 1991 and was a HUGE hit. It was my friend Keith's favorite song. We were both 27 yrs old at the time. The following 4th of July (1992), we all went to Keith's house for a BBQ. He lived on a quiet, private dirt road. He was married and had two small children. So after sundown, he went and did fireworks in the road for his kids to see. We were all on the yard in lawnchairs watching. Then some drunk driver, fleeing the police, came speeding down this private dirt road at about 80mph and hit and killed Keith. Right in front of us. Right in front of his children. As this was his favorite song, his widow had it played at his memorial service. So when I hear this song, it doesn't bring back any happy memories. It just makes me think of watching my friend Keith being killed.

I didn’t know that Nirvana did this song, either. I have heard this once in a while but, not often. This is one of those songs that a person will listen to if, it plays on the radio. The true greats are those who usher in something completely new, not just their own music, but introduce an utterly new genre, and change music in general. Even for those of us who were around at the time, it can be hard to remember decades later the sheer originality of the moment. Sometimes it's not just what a band did, but WHEN they did it...and what music was like before and after. In my mind, Nirvana stands alongside the likes of Elvis and the Beatles in this regard.

I grew up with pretty much everything you're listening to, but your enthusiasm is infectious...making me appreciate it even more. Thank you for that.
“I guess it’s gonna be a singalong” and Kurt starts mumbling 😆
🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣😅😅😅😅😅
I almost fell off my chair when he said that! Figured if he knew the words after hearing it a few times in a stadium then his ear is better than mine! I didn't learn the lyrics until a few years ago! Lol
You a Sun Ra fan? Rocket Number 9 took off for the planet, which planet? Venus! Check it out folks
Yeah I thought "if you can...". 😂 I know most of the lyrics because they're in the CD booklet but it's been a long time since I read it.
I didn’t know that Nirvana did this song, either. I have heard this once in a while but, not often. This is one of those songs that a person will listen to if, it plays on the radio. I never got into Nirvana. The songs tended to be a little darker than I could handle at the time. This is when my husband and I were still living in the often gloomy winters, Puget Sound. I need a lot of sunshine all year long. Thanks for the reaction, Jamel.
If you are gonna do any other Nirvana, check out "Heart-Shaped Box".
One of the best!
And Dive, Sappy and About a Girl! By the way I love Drain You too!
I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this song. After hearing the opening chords and the drum intro, I knew within the first 10 seconds that this song was going to be huge! It defined a generation.
Same here! I was mesmerized!
I have 3 requests
1 More grunge
2 More grunge
3 More grunge
Any of these will do just fine. Thanx
I would love for him to be like we were in 1990. We were SO. TIRED. of MTV playing hair metal every 5 minutes that when Grunge happens with music with substance, we all just jumped on it. Time for a hair metal marathon, then react to Nirvana's Lithium (and Lounge Act, the low-key best song on Nevermind)
I like this request
grunge was about before nirvina ,mud money butthole surfers wedding present and lots more 1986 it started full
Totally hear that
Fuck yeah
Probably the most famous song of the '90s. I'm shook every time I hear it.
“I don’t really know the lyrics.” My response: nobody does.
That's what the Weird Al version is all about.
I literally know every word but they don’t make any sense. 🤣
a leditto
@@Sussypx9798yt I got the full blast of nirvana in the early 90s cause I was in the beginning 20s back then. The lyrics were so suitable to my overall feelings about myself in the world... for me and lots others it was the definition of "making sense" ;)
john day I thought it was ‘my libido’
Nirvana, Pearl Jam, STP,and Alice n Chains changed my life. I was 11 years old and my older cousin brought along her boom box to my grandma's house and we listened to them in the attic. I went from Whitney Huston, Bet Middler, and New Kids to full fledged grungy over a weekend.
The song that killed the 80's hair metal scene.
80's hair metal killed 80's hair metal.
@@kenthayer2905 Yup. It had already turned into a parody of itself.

Thank Satan for that.
I remember when that happened. Lol
This song shook teenage me! I came in from school turned the television to MTV and stayed on my knees-totally mesmerized!!!
As someone who hit their early 20's in Seattle at the opening of the 90's, this was part of the soundtrack of my life.
I absolutely love Nirvana ❤ he died when I was in high school (side note: During my high school years... Kurt Cobain, Tupac, and Notorious BIG, all died, ans all favorites of mine, all music legends. Such sad tragedies 🥺)
I was crushed and a lot of high school students were in tears that day each of them died 💔 including me. I a lot cried a lot, Nirvana was my favorite band, it still is in my top favorite bands of all times! 💙
His voice is so incredibly amazing and so unique, I love it! ❤ Thanks again for your great reaction!! I really enjoyed it, as always!✌
To really understand the impact of this song, you would have to go back in time to the days of MTV where rockers all had big huge hair and wore make up. Then, out of the blue, this shows up on MTV...
Its not just the look, the sound was just as different and this song right here changed our society and our culture very quickly.
I used to watch them in the dorms at The Evergreen State College circa 1988. We just thought another local punk band. They became something we never imagined.
oh how i loved their mtv unplugged session . i remember blowing my speakers in dts (like dolbydigital5.1 i think. not sure if dts is only a european thing lol) for months . but i always had the lyrics next to me for a while hehe
When I first heard this song in 1991 I was hooked for life! Their album NEVERMIND changed the course of music! I listened to that album so much! Interesting thing. Never got tired of listening to t!
I loved this song so much that after I bought the Nevermind cassette, yes cassette, I sat there going over the words until I knew every word. 🤣 I just had a jam session in my living room blaring this video. Still love this song! 🤘🏻 RIP Kurt.
but....that would mean....you’re in your....

Stephanie Glenn awww a young whipper snapper!
I distinctly recall way back when, seeing this video for the very first time on its debut at MTV; I was immeditaely hooked and had to go out buy their music, it was that groundbreaking (for me) in that era.
“Negative creep” if u wanna hear them go crazzy. Get goosebumps everytime he hits that scream jn this one.
Fuck yeah!
Anything from bleach or Insecticide
gripenfelter yea their best shit is on these
Yesss now its stuck in my head
RIP Curt Cobain, Such a talented young man. I love your channel. It is so much fun to see you younger people are lovin' our music from back in the day. It always makes me feel great. Thank you and thank you to your lovely audience.
Fun Fact: During the recording of this song, Kurt screamed so much that he lost his voice and was spitting up blood. True musicianship right there.
I love all of these bands!
For a real trip...watch the official video for Weird Al Yankovic's "Smells Like Nirvana"...the video sends up this one. It's hysterical!
When i 1st asked for this single on a cassette from my mom she ended up buying me the Wierd Al version instead. Man, that was a long time ago!!!
The videos are on YT, where Al talks about the phone call where he asked Kurt Cobain to use this song, its pretty funny.
That is AN ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENT!!!!
Weird Al Yankovic - Smells Like Nirvana

The janitor and a bunch of the people in Al's parody video are the same ones in Nirvana's video
Thank you! Just got to see the parody for the first time; that was hilarious!
I remember when this song came out and I too never knew the lyrics but loved the sound. If you haven't done so already, you might want to see the version done by 1000 Rockers. They had 1000s of drummers, guitarists, vocalists, and keyboards playing this music at a football stadium. Quite amazing to see them keep in rhythmic timing.
Punk Rock/Grunge,heavy metal rock n roll,I love it,Youth`s gone wild, most are Rebellious, always a reason for reactions and aggression.
Man I'm gonna be completely honest, your reactions are the best bro. Keep it up!
The rest in peace at the end was a nice touch.
When i was 8 or 10 years old.. i remember that Song on the radio in my country el salvador. This song is amazing!
"Woo hoo!". Classic. But a good point. EVERYBODY tried to sound like Nirvana after this album, so it makes sense you'd mistake it for another song (or 50 other songs) from that decade. 🙏❤️
Yeah 😅
Jamel/Jamal - you are terrific. I support your channel. As a big Nirvana fan (we are legion, BTW, as you probably know) I was happily thinking "this guy has no idea what he's getting into."
Did you know the drummer looks exactly like Dave Ghrol lol 😂😂😂
@Marc Poindexter whoosh!
@Marc Poindexter O RLY U DO NOT SAY
Marc Poindexter lol i thought you fell for it and then saw the “just messin with ya” 😂
@Marc Poindexter lucky for you 😂😂😂
@Marc Poindexter yeah , the new stuff isn't as good . Too much computer and to polished for me.
Senior year of high school when this came out. This song defines that time period for me
"I find it hard, it's hard to find … oh well, whatever, nevermind…." amazing
you should check out the MTV unplugged "Man who sold the world"
First hearing this song was amazing. There were these hugely distorted guitars, then the clear, sweet single notes, and Kurt’s clear voice.
I saw Nirvana sometime between 89-91, just before they broke, and their energy was amazing. RIP Kurt.
Back in the day
I saw this video and said to myself "wow, things have changed, this is a new movement, a new sensibility - what does it mean?"
Love the moment when you can put a song you heard many times to the artist and the video.. Like having a lightbulb moment...
Fun story, Kurt's friend Kathleen Hanna wrote the phrase "Kurts smells like teen spirit" on his apartment wall and that's where the title comes from. Teen spirit is a girls deodorant.
I'm not sure if this is true, but I've heard in some versions of the story that his girlfriend at the time, Tobi Vail, used that deodorant.
I love this reaction so much. You are the man!
"I found it hard, it's hard to find, oh well, whatever, nevermind" probably my favorite lyric of all time
Friends hat and listening to Nirvana. 2 of my favorite things. Subscribed.
The most musically transformative song since "She Loves You" in 1964.
No one turn Jamal on to the Beatles?
And before that "Rock Around The Clock."
@@HardRockMaster7577 Maybe...but I'd give the nod to Johnny B. Goode in '58 or Little Richard's - Tutti Frutti which was released a month before "Rock Around The Clock" in '55.
I think one can see how close he`s listening, how much of the vibe he is taking into.. that´s quite good for a reaction video. And i like how much he´s not pretending to know stuff. Very openminded and cool

For something a bit faster and intense of theirs, try "Territorial Pissings" and "Negative Creep"

We played this song in band in the '90s. The whole world latched on to Smells Like Teen Spirit immediately.
Now you have to watch Foo Fighters with Everlong
Yes, since the drummer for Nirvana is the lead for Foo Fighters. Dave Grohl
I WAS Waiting for this one my mane!!! Song that made em famous and started a revolution. That's hasn't been even close since them

Everybody else: we know, just go along with it
I don’t know you and your video appeared in my feed like magic but you’re awesome.
Nirvana-Pennyroyal tea
Nirvana-scentless apprentice
Nirvana-Aero Zeppelin
The best of Nirvana for me
Pennyroyal tea is one of my fav if not fav
Your long pause, and then "WOO HOO", followed by another pause made me laugh...I've had a rough day---THANK YOU for making me laugh! (Great song, isn't it) :-)
we should turn him on to some older Tool like Lateralus.
I'll never forget the day I saw this on MTV....the shock heard round the world. #RIP Kurt
The song you were thinking of is called Song 2 by Blur. You should react to it
Mitch Maldonado I agree. Would love to see some Blur reactions. Song 2, Boys & Girls, Park Life, Crazy Beat
Lyrically Song 2 means nothing, more in the veins of Start Me Up, another song, that has no meaning. Not a criticism-just the way it is. It would great to see him do some more 90's British Rock.
But he already knows the song. I like Blur but the Song 2 video isn’t much to shake a stick at
I've listened to this song for almost 20 years. Your video prompted me to finally look up the lyrics. Like Peter Kay, I was way off
React to nirvana - in bloom
Please!!!
I second this...the video..
Me too
I just found you and I've been watching you react for like 3 hours to so many songs i love from so many genres. Love that you are so eclectic.
hey jamal, i really enjoy yours videos, maybe you can react to some punk rock music, like sex pistols, the ramones, dead kennedys or the exploited, cheers from chile keep it real bro!!!
Holiday in Cambodia!
I second that!!

He should do a reaction on the Repoman soundtrack
Don't forget The Clash
Pure energy!!! Absolutely love this song!!!

Gotta add "you've seen the butcher" gotta love the crunchy ass bass in the beginning
this came out when I was in high school grunge rock 90s was so awesome so many great bands and great songs another great song love it
This song was the changing of the guard. 80's hair metal died the day this song came out.
When my spouse and I saw this vid for the 1st time on MTV we knew we were witnessing something revolutionary...a Grand Canyon-level game changer.
Dude, I watch you all the time. Keep on. I laugh my ass off to these.
Lol, nobody really knows the lyrics.😉
“Oh well, whatever, never mind” - that’s all we need to hear and know.

I remember when this video aired originally. A lot of people didn't know then that the fans were actual fans they like put it in the paper for people to come down. Also the crazy shit the fans are doing in the video wasn't scripted. Great reaction!
Alice in Chains - Junkhead (Live)
Nirvana was one of the forerunners, if not the original, for the entire Grunge Rock genre. This song was the anthem of my generation.
"Weird Al" "Smells like Nirvana" Will mess with you if you know the song and not the lyrics.
Definitely react to Weird Al's Smells Like Nirvana. 😂
This would really be perfect after Jamal admitted he couldn’t understand the lyrics!
yes,you have to check out weird al's version
No. Please.
How does this dude not go and listen to all nirvana songs after hearing all these nirvana songs and loving them so much lol
Hey, you should check out Bad Religion. Their singer is amazing and he is a college
professor with a PhD. His lyrics are very political and insightful, the harmonies are amazing, and the band sounds killer! I would recommend Sorrow, Kyoto Now, Generator, or anything off the album Stranger Than Fiction. Love the videos, keep ‘em comin’!
Greg Griffin is awesome. 👍🏻
"Fuck armageddon this is hell"
I always like to start people off with "Do What You Want"
Dr Hambone. Graffin is the man!😎
A very influential album (Suffer) in the punk history timeline, but I was thinking, since he might not be accustomed to punk just yet, some slightly later BR material could be a good way to start.
@Ron Lewenberg Agreed👍
The song that killed hair metal
What the hell is that, "hair metal"?
mindtraveller100 its a common name for the typical 80es rock where all the bands had big hair and everybody looked the same. Typical Cinderella, Foreigner etc
Nope totally still around, unlike grunge...
Most hair metal bands are still touring & making new music today...
What's Nirvana doing? 🤣🤣
@@mr.swindiggle6776 Foo Fighters still recording and performing, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, all still around, grunge is alive and well in the modern day.

The anarchy girl was always my dream when I was 13. I never found her.
